EP 52 | Kamala and Tim - Controlling the Conversation12 Aug 202400:25:08

Send us a text

Kamala Harris and her new VP pick, Tim Walz are what some might call a "Dream Team." Walz was a bit of an unconventional pick, but anyone who's seen them on stage together would have to acknowledge that he makes the perfect compliment for her. Much like her, he's optimistic, he's plain-spoken and he's... *gasp* joyful. These are words you wouldn't necessarily associate with politics, but they're qualities that have been sorely lacking in our political sphere of late.

As we're all breathing a sigh of relief, we're also observing the unique ways in which these kindred souls move. When you're facing an opponent who deals in schoolyard politics, the temptation might be to allow that joy to be overwhelmed with the need to push back on his lies, to clapback to his insults and to allow the news cycle to be dominated by damage control. Kamala and Tim seem to be aware of this danger, and so far, they've focused on keeping their forward momentum, while not being afraid to address Trump and Vance's attacks head on, and then keep it moving.

It's a delicate balance they'll have to strike if they want to maintain their status as "The Joyful Team" and avoid being swept up in his vortex of chaos.

EP 51 | "Red Pill" Culture | with Gerard LeConte04 Aug 202401:17:23

Send us a text

Today, my guest Gerard LeConte and I discuss the ever-growing influence of so-called "Red Pill Culture" on the current Republican Party. From Andrew Tate to Jordan Peterson and now JD Vance, there's no shortage of far-right spokesmen to channel the anger, frustration and loneliness of young men and boys into increasingly toxic viewpoints.

Gerard LeConte and I are discussing a recent viral video he did on this topic:
Right Wing Radicalization

We're discussing ways that those concerned about this phenomenon can help to lessen its impact on the men in their lives.

EP 50 | Madame President?29 Jul 202400:31:33

Send us a text

And just like that, Kamala Harris is now within a stone's throw of the presidency. Today, we're taking a look at how we got here, and I'm evaluating my own thought process around the idea of electing a Black woman as president, and examining how even those of us who think she can do the job can behave as impediments to her actually getting the job.

EP 49 | Why Did Trump Choose JD Vance?22 Jul 202400:49:13

Send us a text

Donald Trump has chosen his running mate – a newly-minted Senator from the state of Ohio named JD Vance. Many will remember him from the best-selling book he wrote in 2016 called, “Hillbilly Elegy.” JD Vance was a media darling at that time. His book shone a light on the unique struggles of America’s white poor.

But festering beneath the surface of this self-proclaimed “conservative with a conscience” was a man who held a special contempt for America’s so-called “liberal elite.” According to his former roommate at Yale law school, he allowed that contempt to lead him down a path of moral decay. JD Vance would not have succeeded in his bid for the Senate without $15 million from PayPal founder Peter Theil.

Despite JD’s scathing critiques of Donald Trump, Theil made a personal introduction of JD to Trump to assist him in his bid for the Senate. It worked. And in a very short period of time, it launched JD to the top of Trump’s list of willing acolytes that were being considered as his running mate.

JD Vance’s ascent has been swift and contradictory. In this episode, I’m taking a look at the various factions that had a hand in positioning him to stand a stone’s throw from the presidency.

EP 48 - Is it Time for Biden to Step Down?15 Jul 202400:28:23

Send us a text

It's the central question on a lot of folks' minds right now -- Should Biden step down? If he does, who will replace him? There are those of us who thought this question would be resolved by now, but it hasn't been. It's time to grapple with the discontent in the Democratic Party and face the question head on -- is it time for Biden to go?

EP 47 | Should Biden Resign? With Guest Gerard LeConte08 Jul 202400:40:14

Send us a text

Much is being made of Joe Biden's abysmal debate performance against Donald Trump. Predictably, the news media, and many within the Democratic Party have sounded the alarm -- Should Joe Biden step down and allow someone else to take over? Does sticking with the incumbent ruin the Democrats' chances of winning the upcoming election against Donald Trump?

Today, I'm talking with social media activist and political commentator, Gerard LeConte about this, and getting his honest take on whether the Democrats should abandon their current nominee.

EP 44 | Deconstructing While Black with Garrison Hayes17 Jun 202400:30:22

Send us a text

In part 3 of this sweeping conversation with filmmaker, journalist and video essayist Garrison Hayes, we discuss the practical aspects of deconstructing while Black. What are the implications within your community, family and friends’ circle? How does being the child of a minister impact this process?

Deconstruction from religious fundamentalism is not an easy process, but the added factor of parsing through racial dynamics infuses the experience with much more complexity and can often leave you with more questions than answers.

EP 41 | Why Voting Rights are Under Attack with Qasim Rashid27 May 202400:38:54

Send us a text

Attacks on voting rights are as old as the U.S. itself. Many people are not aware of the long standing history of attacks on this constitutionally protected right. Efforts to restrict voting access have not abated, and it's incumbent upon all of us to understand how these efforts have evolved over the years. All over the U.S., but particularly in the South and in swing states, there are constant attempts to block ballot access for those who are deemed by some as unworthy to participate in the democratic process.

Today, I discuss that history with human rights lawyer, Qasim Rashid. Qasim is a tireless warrior for the underrepresented and the marginalized. His recent run for Congress in his native Chicago left him even more energized and focused on the issues that affect Black, brown, indigenous, LGBTQ and economically disadvantaged people. You can find him online everywhere at Qasim Rashid

Bonus Episode! Colors of the Wind20 May 202400:10:36

Send us a text

By now, most people know that the version of the Pocahontas story that was presented in the 1995 Disney film is mostly fiction. But the story behind the composition of the film’s most famous song is not as well known. It was important to lyricist Stephen Schwartz to pay homage to the history and legacy of the Powhatan people on which the film is based, but in true American fashion, the source material he drew from as the inspiration for the song’s brilliant lyrics paints a through line to America’s long history of exploitation and misrepresentation of Native stories and voices.

EP 40 | Affirmative Action with Qasim Rashid06 May 202400:39:29

Send us a text

For the month of May, we’re delving into some deep-dive discussions with a couple of my favorite mutual creators — first up is human rights lawyer, Qasim Rashid. In this episode, we’re talking over the recent decision by the conservative Supreme Court to do away with race-based affirmative action. Since anti-affirmative action activist Edward Blum used a group of Asian students as his battering ram to take down affirmative action, Qasim and I speak to the issue of alleged anti-Asian discrimination at elite universities, and how this accusation led to a Supreme Court victory against affirmative action, when an earlier bid with a white student had failed to deliver the success Blum wanted.

Join us next week for a round-up on the issue of voting rights with Qasim.

EP 39 | Mental Health and the Black Community29 Apr 202400:30:53

Send us a text

I’ve taken some time to look at disparities in health outcomes in the Black community vs. every other racial grouping in the U.S. The numbers are pretty grim. And unfortunately, when we take a look at the mental health profile for Black people as a whole in the U.S., it’s no different.

Black people are statistically more likely to suffer from depression, anxiety, PTSD, and they’re more likely to grapple with suicidal ideations. Yet we’re the group that is least likely to seek out help, and when we do, we’re more likely to receive poor quality care. In today’s podcast, I’m examining the reasons for these disparities, and looking at some ways in which we can begin to shift the needle on this troubling reality.

EP 38 | Must We Root for "Everybody Black?"22 Apr 202400:29:22

Send us a text

“I’m Rooting for Everybody Black” has become a bit of a rallying cry to indicate our unwavering support for Black creatives, entrepreneurs, techies — anybody that’s repping Black excellence. But the expectation that “Everybody Black” deserves our support can also be an errant one.

The death of OJ Simpson brings this topic into greater focus, and it’s worth taking another look at this age-old question in light of what his ascent and downfall meant to the Black community.

Are we required to lend our unquestioned support to Black folks simply because they’re “our” people? When is it okay to withdraw our support from Black folks that we deem problematic, and why is this so hard to talk about?

EP 37 | Medical Racism15 Apr 202400:30:56

Send us a text

Medical racism is one of the most under-addressed topics in discussions around healthcare. Maybe that’s because most people don’t really know what it is, or how deeply it impacts communities of color — particularly Black people. Many don’t know it exists at all.

But as you’ll hear in this week’s episode, medical racism can kill. In this week’s podcast, I’m bringing you two Breakdowns on racism within the medical community that highlight the dire state of healthcare within the Black community — cases that provide irrefutable proof that medical disparities do exist along color lines.

We’ll discuss the many forms that medical racism can take, and we’ll talk about solutions as well.

EP 36 | The Politics of White Grievance08 Apr 202400:34:27

Send us a text

White Grievance is big business. And it's increasingly becoming a more reliable winning strategy on the right. As more and more "Trumpists" are elected to political office, we're beginning to see conspiracies like "The Great Replacement Theory" and "white erasure' be mainstreamed by heroes of the right like Tucker Carlson, Elon Musk and Trump himself.

These are no longer the fringe rantings of unhinged political extremists -- these are widely accepted conservative beliefs that are picking up steam with the help of some of the nation's most prominent conservative voices.

And White Grievance has real world consequences. On multiple occasions, the dissemination of these harmful philosophies has led to mass murder. We're going to talk about what we can do to combat this pervasive ideology.

EP 35 | Voting Rights are Under Attack01 Apr 202400:29:30

Send us a text

There has not been a time in U.S. history where the constitutionally protected right to vote has not been under attack for marginalized groups. It's nothing new. It's just a shame that this is still the case in 2024. I'm covering the attack on voting rights, and getting into the long history of challenges to voting for Black and brown people, young people, etc.

How are these tactics being reinforced in 2024? We'll use Georgia as a case study, as they're leading the way in voter roll purges at the moment. Be sure to visit www.vote.org to check up on your voter registration to make sure it’s active.

EP 34 | DEI and Affirmative Action are Under Attack25 Mar 202400:25:49

Send us a text

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion programs are being scrapped all over the country in favor of a 'colorblind' narrative that attempts to minimize the impact of systemic racism on our present day reality. I'm taking a look at the recent move by the Alabama Legislature and Alabama governor Kay Ivey to outlaw DEI programs throughout the state, and to severely control the language used in racial sensitivity training.

I'm also profiling Edward Blum, the man responsible for the outlawing of Affirmative Action and for the gutting the Voting Rights Act.

EP 58 Maintaining Contact With Maga Family Members30 Sep 202401:18:03

Send us a text

Modern American politics can be a severely contentious subject, dissolving friendships and oftentimes splitting families down the middle, leaving many of us to choose between distancing from our loved ones or avoiding political discourse, altogether. This week's guest, Horace Gold has made it his mission to bridge the divide between himself (a left-leaning gay Black man) and his deeply religious, MAGA faithful parents. Horace and I share the similarities in our upbringing, have a discussion about grace and the glaring differences between conflict in the online world and the real one.

EP 33 | Jamelle Bouie on Black Voters and the 2024 Election19 Mar 202400:45:54

Send us a text

Jamelle Bouie is one of the leading voices at the intersection of politics, history and race in the United States. He's a writer for the New York Times, a frequent contributor to CBS News and he has a thriving TikTok channel where he elucidates current affairs for younger audiences.

I sat down with Jamelle to discuss the upcoming election season, and to bring into focus many of the issues that Black voters are focused on. We discussed whether these issues will be on the 'front burner' this year, and we talked about some of the issues that don't get as much attention, like the Voting Rights Act, and how that will impact us all in the coming year.

I'm looking forward to having Jamelle on the show as often as possible leading up to the 2024 election. Follow him on TikTok here:

EP 32 | 3 Heroes of Women's History Month11 Mar 202400:27:18

Send us a text

Women's history month presents a unique opportunity to highlight 3 women that I've done Breakdowns on in the past that would all be rightly regarded as trailblazers in their filed. They're singers, they're songwriters and they've all made their voices heard in their own way.

Black women have always been at the vanguard of artistic innovation, and have always been natural spokespeople for the marginalized in any culture. The artistic vision and creative voices of the women I've chosen to highlight today mean that they  will forever have a place among the greats in music history. They've acted as a beacon for myself and countless artists who have chosen to make their voices heard in the arenas of activism and social justice.

I'm honored to be able to take time to highlight these important musical voices, and to shine a light on the work they've done to speak for the voiceless on and off the stage.

EP 31 | Learning from the MAGA Machine04 Mar 202400:29:57

Send us a text

If you've heard about Project 2025, you already know what MAGA has in store -- a total takeover of the levers of democracy, and a gutting of most of the central government in favor of a Neo-Fascist, Christian Nationalist dystopia. It would be wonderful if that were an exaggeration, but it is not.

So many of us spend our time being (understandably) repulsed by this faction of the Republican party, that we don't take the time to study them. in this episode of "I'm All Over the Place," taken from my weekly broadcast on KJLH in LA, I take a look at the strategies that are being considered by MAGA to come out on top in the 2024 election, regardless of what 'we the people' have to say.

EP 30 | Beyonce and Black Country26 Feb 202400:37:07

Send us a text

This week, we're taking a look at the latest 'dust up' taking over social media -- this time it's Queen Bey who's under fire for throwing her 10-gallon hat into the Country music genre. So, how much of this controversy is media-generated and how much of it's real? We know haters gonna hate, but the bigger question is, is there a real racism problem in Country music? Is it the industry? The fans? Do Black folks really care about making a splash in Country music, or is this all about Beyonce? We're doing a deep dive on the history of race in Country music on this week's episode of "I'm All Over the Place." They’ve spent $22 million hiring ‘experts’ in a variety of fields to flesh out their plan for ‘total world domination.’ Well, maybe not WORLD domination, but they plan to vastly increase the power of the executive branch, and place Foundation-approved applicants in key positions throughout the government. The plan is nothing short of diabolical. The 1,000-page document is available on The Heritage Foundation’s website, and considering its size, very few people have actually read the whole thing – including Donald Trump, who is likely to be updated on highlights of the plan, and then turn its implementation over to Heritage Foundation operatives.

Anyone casting a vote in 2024 (or not) should be aware of what Project 2025 is.

EP 28 | Race Hustlers12 Feb 202400:25:49

Send us a text

The alleged problem of so-called "Race Hustlers" has been much-ballyhoo'd by folks on the right, but where exactly does this accusation come from? You might be surprised to know this is a 'gentrified' term, like a lot of other catch phrases that have become popular with conservatives. Why was this accusation first made, and towards whom was it directed? Understanding the history of terms like 'race baiter' or 'race agitator' can give us the full picture of why this accusation rings false when it's used by those who wish to silence conversations around racial equity and justice.

EP 27 | Political Manipulation - Fantasy and Fear05 Feb 202400:28:20

Send us a text

How easily manipulated are you? Did you know there’s a war waging for the ‘hearts and minds’ of voters right now? Are we allowing ourselves to be manipulated by the powers that be to support policies that go against our best interests? We certainly recognize when other people fall prey to this phenomenon, but can we recognize it in ourselves? We certainly don’t expect our political parties to be bastions of moral purity, but are they standing for anything at all? Or are they just good at gassing up our egos and causing us to fear what we don’t know? Let’s talk about it.

EP 25 | Inside the Minds of Black Conservatives23 Jan 202400:27:58

Send us a text

In this episode, I bring you into my new venture as the host of “The Breakdown” on KJLH in Los Angeles! I’ll be discussing a wide variety of topics and I want my “I’m All Over the Place” community to be a part of that conversation. Let me know what you think about the new format. The good news is, you’ll get the show as consistently as the KJLH audience does - every Monday morning at 5am! So, be sure to make us a part of your weekly routine.

This week’s episode is on a topic I consider myself to be a bit of an expert on – Black Conservatism. I’m touching on an interesting phenomenon that’s being repackaged for a new age – “Racism Laundering.” What is it, and who benefits from it?

Be sure to stop by the Instagram page and follow me there if you haven’t already – daratuckerB. I’m “DaraStarrTucker” on all other platforms.

#10 - Killing Me Softly - Top Ten Breakdowns of 202313 Dec 202300:09:56

Send us a text

I’m starting a countdown today of my top 10 Breakdowns of 2023! Thank you all for weighing in on this. We’ll start with number 10, which is one of my favorite Breakdowns ever. It’s the story of how Lori Lieberman was denied writing credit on a song she greatly contributed to – “Killing me Softly.“ I had the chance to see Lori in concert at Carnegie Hall yesterday, and got to finally meet her in person after having interviewed her for my podcast, and staying in contact with her over the last few months.

She truly is a lovely woman, and I was so honored to bring more attention to her story. She is more than the wrong that was done to her, and I have learned so much about taking ownership of your life and art from her example. I’m so proud to now call her “friend.”

EP 24 | Discussing Antisemitism -- Reading the Room07 Nov 202301:04:19

Send us a text

Is this the right time to talk about antisemitism? Is there a wrong time to talk about it? Can we have the conversation about Palestinian liberation at the same time? This is a pretty personal, impromptu episode I decided to do with Greg Bryant to explore questions I'm asking myself right now as someone who has been a strong advocate for the Jewish people.

We try to be careful not to equate issues of antisemitism with issues of anti-Zionism, but why does a conversation about one so quickly lead to a conversation about the other?

Doing any advocacy work around antisemitism is going to require that I be more outspoken about what's going on in the world right now. And I can't say I'm looking forward to learning how to hold those two realities simultaneously. But I'm going to try.

EP 23 | Je'Niece McCullough Talks Bernie Mac26 Oct 202301:35:47

Send us a text

Je'Niece McCullough worked side-by-side with her dad, Bernie Mac for the last few years of his life. She had a front-row seat into his process, and she was able to observe him up close and personal at the very top of his game.

She didn't grow up as the privileged child of a famous man -- Bernie achieved most of his commercial success when she was well into adulthood. For that reason, Je'Niece has a unique perspective on fame and wealth. She was able to observe the consistency in her father's character as he made his slow climb to the top.

Bernie was a 'real one,' and Je'Niece is a product of his tutelage. Follow Je'Niece's podcast, Bernie's Daughter, where she interviews the people who knew him best. If you love Bernie, you'll love her podcast.

This is part of a series I'm doing on fathers and daughters. If you haven't had the chance to view/listen to the Lalah Hathaway/Donny Hathaway episode, you can watch or listen here:

EP 21 | Holly Robinson Peete Talks Matt Robinson08 Oct 202301:23:49

Send us a text

Many of us know Holly Robinson Peete from her long career in television, beginning with "21 Jump Street" and "Hangin' with Mr. Cooper." But did you know her first on-screen appearance happened much earlier? She's the daughter of Matt Robinson, who was the first "Gordon" on Sesame Street. Holly actually made her television debut on her dad's show in the early '70's.

This is the first of several episodes where we'll focus on Dads and Daughters. In this episode, Holly talks about what it was like to grow up with a dad whose job she didn't always understand. She also discusses the many challenges he faced in attempting to bring an inner-city character, Roosevelt Franklin, to the airwaves at a time when allowances were not made for a multitude of Black voices on the air.

Holly also discusses her career over the last 40 years, and gives insight into the driving force behind the "HollyRod" foundation she and her husband, Rodney Peete began all the way back in 1997, which is still going strong today.
