105: A walk through Catholic history02 Jun 202600:21:34

An outdoor, walking-talking episode! Joanna, who leads Catholic History Walks in London, leads us though some of the history that connects us with ‘the Catholic faith we share with our ancestors.’ In understanding something of our history and being able to talk to others about it, Joanna says that, ‘we may be opening up their hearts and minds to something much larger and more beautiful…that connection all the way through history going right the way back must mean something. And it does.’

104: An invisible reporter telling the stories of our faith26 May 202600:24:20

Jo Siedlecka is the founder of Independent Catholic News. She shares how she finally returned to her faith after observing the quiet witness of others in different parts of the world, caring for street children and refugees. She says, ‘They were people with a faith. They were motivated by something more than just altruism.’ Jo gives us a glimpse into the behind-the-scenes work of curating a free daily Catholic news website - and the prayers and practices that continue to nourish her faith: knowing prayers in Polish and English, Mass that welcomes dogs as well as children, making space for quiet reflection and joining in the morning and night prayer of the church.

95: I went in with a plan but Lent this year has called me out 24 Mar 202600:36:02

This week’s episode was originally recorded live with an audience at our very first in-person event. Helena shares how she grew up, with Polish heritage in America, married a British man and moved to England with a young family. The world of theatre and particularly drama ministry is huge in Helena’s life. She describes ‘a pivotal moment’ when the Holy Spirit was at work, leading her to bring together young people with and without disabilities in a robot-themed dance performance. Currently working with Radio Maria England, Helena explains other ways in which God has undone her plans, sometimes painfully. She feels He is telling her, ‘You cannot decide everything. You've got to let some of it be mine.’

94: Work and Prayer: Brewing beer alongside the monks of Mount St Bernard Abbey17 Mar 202600:34:52

Peter shares his journey, via the Royal Navy and tax accounting, to running the brewery alongside Trappist monks and managing the abbey estate. He explains how he has adapted to working with the rhythm of monastic life, describing the monks as having a ‘more eternal concept of time’ than he was previously used to, especially at work. It’s fascinating to hear how commercial concerns and a life of prayer are balanced by the monastic community and Peter himself - and the opportunity for ‘soft evangelisation’ that brewing beer offers them.

Episode 92: Jaimin and Neena talk about becoming parents who want to ‘plant the seeds of faith’ in their child. Prayer, worship, the Word of God, and belonging to a faith-filled ministry community, all play a big part in their lives. Encountering the Lord has filled them with joy and purpose, and a sense of responsibility. They ask if they are doing enough to keep faith alive in Britain - and worry about whether their son will have the opportunity to attend daily Mass when he grows up.

Episode 87 John Patrick talks about the importance of his roots in a parish in Mossend, Scotland - and in his Irish and Lithuanian heritage. He describes how he and his cousin, Brian, 'fell into' setting up a media company to 'present the Church and the faith...the fullness of truth, faith and reason, but also the joy of being a Catholic.' Ten years on, John Patrick explains what he thinks makes an authentic social media presence for sharing the faith, starting with, 'You have to just not be afraid.'

Episode 86 Fr John shares how working as a prison chaplain 'can be emotionally draining, but at the same time, very uplifting,' because, he says, we meet Jesus in the men and women who are in prison. For Fr John, the best way to pray is like St Therese of Lisieux, to 'talk to God in my own words.' Hear why the Road to Emmaus gospel story is important for him too.

103: We are not digital: Meeting face to face matters19 May 202600:32:10

Sophie explains how as a teenager she made a decision to listen carefully to the Mass and decide if it was ‘something I want to be part of my life.’ For her, sharing faith with others is driven by wanting to share the love of God with them. Drawing on St John Paul II, Sophie points out that communicating about faith online is important but in the digital space ‘what we’re missing is that real, embodied encounter with someone.’

Send us a text

Episode 83 In this episode, Jenny describes being involved in the work of building peace, after years of conflict in a Pacific island country. She reflects on the culture she found there, in which listening, not speaking, was fundamental. She contrasts this experience with the learning we need to do in the West, to try to become a synodal Church. While ‘Prayer and openly talking about God all the time was part of the culture,’ and ‘People in the Pacific make no contribution to the climate crisis,’ Jenny shares honestly about the time and hard work it takes to heal and rebuild structures and relationships after conflict.

82: The angels are alongside us23 Dec 202500:28:13

Episode 82 Special Christmas episode: a conversation and Christmas carols. Anne and Mark share their thoughts and experiences of angels. Mark reminds us that angels are both with us and in the presence of God, ‘They’re here and they’re there at the same time.’ Seeing an image carved on a tomb years ago taught Anne to think of angels, not ‘like a fairy with pretty wings,’ but as ‘fierce’ and ‘protective.’

Thanks to Elizabeth, of Episode 21, for sharing her beautiful Christmas carol-singing.

As a young woman she continued learning to view the world ‘through the lens of the Gospel.’ Working for small organisations, listening to the voices of vulnerable women – and through her own difficult experiences - Carol explains how she became alert to how women had been treated in the Church: ‘It's both an emotional thing of exclusion, but it's also a justice issue.’ Find out how Carol answers the question in the episode title.

He credits his wife, Ann, with helping him to ‘stick with’ his faith when he was ‘inclined to go the way the world was going.’  We talk about John’s courage in finding ways to share the Catholic faith with others where they are in today’s world.

Episode 77 As a Catholic, when is it okay to compromise? Matt shares how his faith and his politics inform each other and how he understands compromise - and red lines. He believes wholeheartedly in the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist – and also belongs to an ecumenical queer church community. He sees community as important to Catholic people, and a part of upholding dignity at work and reducing reliance on state-provided welfare support. But, Matt says, ‘We’ve lost that as Catholics.’

102: O Lord, you have searched me and known me12 May 202600:28:06

Claire grew up in the South Wales valleys in a family with no faith – although later she was able to see how God was already at work in her life. Her journey to the Catholic Church took a long time, beginning in the Anglican church, feeling called to ministry, then thirty years of being away from church altogether. But on becoming a Catholic in her fifties, Claire says, ‘I’ve never looked back.’ She is a trans woman and she shares how her identity and her faith sit comfortably together and the words of Psalm 139 feel affirming to her. We discuss Claire’s research on the experiences of trans young people in schools — published in her book Wrong Bodies, Wrong Schools. She is aware of how toxic this issue has become but ‘These stories’, she says, ‘need to be told.’

In this episode, Fiona and Martyn share their experiences of evangelising - and being evangelised. Years ago, Martyn says he ‘knew I wanted to become a Catholic, but I hadn't really discussed the topic with my family,’ and Fiona, despite being a ‘quite ludicrously devout child…very much fell out of love with the Church.’ They explain what they have learned since then about sharing the Gospel with others, in loving and truthful ways.

Episode 66 David describes a startling experience one Christmas day at Mass that showed him 'the abundance and realness of God's love.' Since serving a prison sentence, it is the charity, beauty and kindness of prisoners for each other that reminds him to 'choose to be a better man every day.' Prison radicalised him, David says. He now campaigns for change in a criminal justice system where he experienced 'moral rot ... cruelty and harm.'

101: How this once-closed church has become a beacon of faith05 May 202600:28:32

Father Matthew tells us how it began: a closed church, a couple looking for a new spiritual home, a letter to the family at the Manor House, and a year-long experiment that is growing into a thriving Ordinariate congregation. Today St Mary's Catholic church has two Sunday Masses, many parish activities, and a 99-year lease on the church building. Five members of the parish community join the conversation to explain how their faith is nurtured by the way our shared faith is expressed in this particular parish.

Episode 65 In this conversation about conversation, Clare lifts up the grace to be found in our everyday encounters with each other. Conversation is 'that place where we forge together our understanding ... where God makes God's self known.' While truth and joy stand out for Clare in scripture, she says that 'if you really want to know what it is to get to know God. It's about those three things, faith, hope, and love.'

Episode 62: Jim, who is an American professor and a Catholic, tells the extraordinary story of uncovering his grandfather's connection to the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This research took Jim to Nagasaki, 'the centre of Catholicism in Japan for centuries.' An awkward question from a Japanese Catholic there - a descendant of the 'hidden Christians' and whose father was a victim of the bomb - led to a beautiful project to restore 'the sound of the two bells ringing together' from the cathedral in Nagasaki, for the first time in 80 years. Jim says, 'It's really inspired a lot of people in terms of hope and peace and reconciliation.'
