Episode 56 of ‘All About Art’: The Experience of Sitting for a Portrait - In the Studio with Beau Gabriel This episode is a bit different because All About Art is a podcast all about demystifying the professional arts sector by speaking to amazing people in different roles in the arts - But I also love to do episodes that touch on various themes within the industry, and this time it’s more unconventional. I recently went to visit Beau Gabriel, a London-based artist, in his studio to sit for a painting. This was my first time sitting for a painting and it was really fun to experience this while also taking my mics with me to record it for you listening in. If you get bothered by background noise, I suggest you skip forward a tad because in the first 10 minutes, you can hear Beau prime his canvas and paint brushes while he me how to pose. In a casual interview format, listen in to hear us talk about underpainting and pigments, what it feels like being a sitter, and so much more. To set the scene a little bit while you listen, we were standing in Beau’s studio in East London with the natural light of a very cold Sunday in November. Beau had his easel set up and a monochrome pallet of oil paint to create the underpainting of my portrait. I was standing across from him with a chair in front of me on the back of which I was resting my hand, and I had a little space heater facing me to keep me warm because of what felt like freezing temperatures, quite typical for artist studios in London in the winter. Episode 55 of ‘All About Art’: Writing an Artist Biography: Discussing Pauline Boty with Marc Kristal In this episode, I sat down with Marc Kristal, who recently published the biography of British pop artist Pauline Boty. This episode and the book’s publication is concurrent to an exhibition of Boty’s works at Gazelli Art House in London. Boty was born in South London, and in 1954, she received a scholarship to Wimbledon School of Art and then continued her studies at the Royal College of Art in the late 50’s. She worked across a variety of mediums that include painting, collage, and stained glass and was known for celebrating her womanhood and sexuality in an unapologetic and open way. She died at the young age of 28, and has been a lesser known member of the British Pop Art Movement in comparison to her male counterparts. Pauline Boty’s artwork is held in a few amazing collections, including The National Portrait Gallery and Tate Britain in London as well as the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington. | A Critical Take on the National Gallery’s ‘200 Creators’ Call Out | 03 Oct 2023 | 00:12:36 | |
Episode 53: A Critical Take on the National Gallery’s ‘200 Creators’ Call Out Recently, someone left a comment on one of my Instagram posts. They asked ‘could you share your feelings on the National Gallery calling all content creators to celebrate the bicentenary? Many are calling the criteria unfair and as a professional in the art industry and as a creator, I’m curious how you feel about it’, which has now sparked the inspiration for this podcast episode. In this episode, I take a critical stance on the recently announced call out from the National Gallery to create a network of UK-based digital creative influencers as part of its Bicentenary celebration called NG200. Applications have opened for digital creators to make ‘digital content’ which responds to the museum’s collection, exhibitions, building, and day-to-day activities. Those selected will be named a Creative Collaborator, or will join the Gallery’s newly created 200 Creators Network. The issue is… Applicants are asked to have a strong existing social media presence, with either a minimum of 50k subscribers on YouTube; 50k followers on TikTok and 1m likes on their account; or 100K followers on Instagram. The gallery said it wants to “collaborate with creators whose communities are interested in any number of topics, niches, and themes, and these don’t need to be based around art.” Listen in to hear what I think is very cool about this, what the bad elements of it could be, where the National gallery may have taken a misstep, and my personal conclusion I have drawn from all of this. Episode 47 of ‘All About Art’: Running an Arts Project Space with Penelope Kupfer, Director of Kupfer In this episode, I sat down with Penelope Kupfer, director of the eponymous gallery and project space in Hackney, north east London. Kupfer functions as a platform for exhibitions and residencies. Opened in 2017, they have showcased the work of nearly 80 artists from different generations and geographies with a focus on those who are currently underrepresented in the London art circuit. EPISODE 44 of ‘All About Art’: Artist Interview with Stacey Gillian Abe (in collaboration with Unit London) In this episode, I had the joy of speaking to artist Stacey Gillian Abe. Stacey was born in Kampala, Uganda, in 1990. She received her BA in Art and Industrial Design from Kyambogo University in 2014. She has gone on to present her work internationally at museums, galleries, fairs and biennales. The episode coincides with her solo exhibition at Unit London on Hanover Square in London. Within this episode, Stacey tells me about the works in the show and what inspires her practice. We chat about how she brings in autobiographical experiences and investigations of themes like identity, gender, and the Black Body. We also talk about the medium she uses, as she primarily uses paint but has encompassed hand embroidery in this series, which is a new element in her work. The works evoke a strong relationship to the viewer but they also exert their independence from the viewer through the poses and gazes of each subject. The exhibition is on until January 27th 2023, so if you’re in London, I definitely recommend you go see the show! Libby studied Physics at Imperial College London and has a PhD in Quantum Information Science from the University of Leeds. She spent 5 years working as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Oxford and the National University of Singapore, leading her own research and publishing 20 papers on topics like quantum entanglement and quantum biology. In 2008, she won HSBC and the Institute of Physics Very Early Career Woman physicist of the year and a prestigious EPSRC postdoctoral fellowship. However, as you will hear later on in the episode, Libby retrained as an artist at Central St. Martins, graduating in 2015, and now works at the intersection of advanced technologies, science and art. She is widely recognized as a pioneer of quantum computing and art, receiving substantial international press for her artwork Ent-, which is a work we will discuss in depth later on. Gražina curated the exhibition showing during the 59th Venice Biennale which is titled 'Surrealism and Magic: Enchanted Modernity'. In this episode, we talk about her background and how she came to curate at such a renowned organization. We delve into the intricacies and processes of curating an extensive exhibition, and we also touch on the challenges of putting together a show like this one. The account has now amassed over 55 thousand followers, highlighting the overlooked Black artists, sitters, curators, and thinkers from art history to the present day. Within this episode, Alayo and I speak about her education at Cambridge and the Courtauld in London, but we also dig deep into how she feels that the account has affected her career. We also talk about her professional trajectory, and how what she has learned through her education in art history and curating, as well as her work within decolonizing the sector, has impacted what type of work she wants to do later on. EPISODE 29 of 'All About Art': Artist Interview with Lindsey Jean McLean In this episode, I sat down with rising star in the world of painting, Lindsey Jean McLean. Lindsey studied at the Glasgow School of Art, the Royal Drawing School, and then at the renowned Slade School of Fine Art. Her works question the historical representation of femininity and women in painting and she does this while depicting figures that exist in a space between portraiture and imagination, a combination of these. She uses recurring motifs such as feather boas, fans and veils that represent transformative objects which often obscure the viewers or the subject’s gaze in her works. In her words, she subverts the historically patriarchal medium of oil paint to dismantle and create a new space to view femininity. We chat about her artistic practice while she gives advice on how to work as an artist full-time as well as important things to do as an artist to collaborate and further your career. EPISODE 25 of 'All About Art': Artist Interview with Aline Alagem (in collaboration with ARTPOWHER Contemporary) In this episode, I chat with artist Aline Alagem about her work and professional experiences. We chat about her paintings that are loaded with references to the female body, sensuality, sexuality, gender, and more. We also talk about upcoming projects and the lessons she’s learned in past ones. In Aline’s works, feminine sensuality is both a metaphor and a realization of manifesting one’s self. The compositions and collage-like altered scenes in her figurative paintings hint at hidden layers that flow beneath the surface. She states that moments of secret longing and pleasure are “planted” in frosty arctic landscapes, asking about the possibility and impossibility of reaching the edge of desire- becoming it, or being lost in it. What I love about her works is that they challenge the historical position of women as passive subjects, either of the male gaze or male longing. She says that female bodies no longer exist as vessels for others’ desires, but they become feeling, longing heroines creating their own story. EPISODE 21 of 'All About Art': The Art of Framing with Gregory Baker This episode focuses on a career in the arts that is very hands-on and is intrinsic to the transportation and display of works of art, namely FRAMING with London framer Gregory Baker. We chat about his business as an art framer and how he learned the craft. We also chat about materials he uses, such as various types of glass and how they affect a work of art, as well as his experience as an art technician at Sotheby's auction house which informs his practice today. Greg graduated from Central Saint Martins with a degree in Fine Art, and went on to work for Steward Heslop Frames and John Davies Frames in the years following his degree. He then proceeded to work for Sotheby's auction house and Alon Zakim Fine Art while starting his own business. He collaborated with Sotheby's and has framed works by the likes of Cy Twombly, Lucien Freud, David Hockney, Georg Baselitz, and Jenny Saville.
