Complexity, Abstraction, & Replication07 janv. 202601:39:23

We discuss:

  • Process-oriented fields like economics, evolution, and epistemology
  • Levels of abstraction and explanation vs. interacting domains of thought
  • Different measures of complexity - of programs, ideas, organisms, and designed objects
  • The role of replication in how evolution works and how the mind works

AGI & The Blind Watchmaker31 déc. 202501:25:07
  • Godel, Escher, Bach & Hofstadter's focus on self-reference vs. David Deutschs focus on universality
  • Comparing knowledge about what to do vs. what is true, and whether you should ever give advice
  • Why the Blind Watchmaker by Richard Dawkins is a good guide to AGI research

Delphinus Sapiens: human brains in dolphin bodies26 juin 202400:27:55

1. Dolphins. Transplant human brains into dolphin bodies. How long before they build printing presses? More generally, what matters more: our hands or our brains?

2. Set. Point. Search. Human power depends on three things: having many possibilities, good actual ideas, and the ability to find good ideas.

3. The Attention Machine. Accelerating search by focusing on what's relevant.

AGI = Darwin + Turing + Darwin21 juin 202400:25:52

What makes something an AGI? What requirements should it meet?

1. Darwin. It should be able to explore many possibilities, via variation and selection.

2. Turing.  It should have the widest set of possibilities and opportunities. It should be able to think anything that is thinkable. Compute anything computable.

3. Darwin. Having found a new and good idea or theory, it should be possible to use it to improve how it searches. It should be able to engage in variation and selection in new ways.

Progress & Knowledge12 juin 202400:25:41

In this episode, I discuss:

1. Progress. What makes progress possible? What makes it go faster? What makes it go further?
2. Four elements of knowledge-creation. Variation, selection, attention, & knowledge.
3. The nature of knowledge. What is its role? How does it work?

Variation, Selection, Universality, & Attention06 juin 202400:28:09

Howdy! I'm Carlos, and I work on artificial general intelligence. In this episode, I discuss:

  1. My main research question: What makes human minds so powerful?
  2. Why the Darwinian ideas of variation and selection are central to understanding how minds work.
  3. My latest research: How do humans identify and focus on what's relevant?
