Afternoonas Unwrapped02 Sep 202600:44:50

For the first time since 2023, all three noonas were in the same place at the same time! We converged on Chicago for BTS and made the most of our short time together, including snuggling up in Amy's bed to record this episode. You're welcome, video viewers! For this self-indulgent episode, we took the opportunity to reintroduce ourselves as the hosts we are now compared to the timid, newbie podcasters we were five plus years ago. Today we share things we never would have shared--like our underwear packing habits and how Bigfoot was an integral figure in our early author lives--on that first, VERY scripted episode. So snuggle up, listeners, and hop in bed with us for Afternoonas Unwrapped!

Mirror Mirror: What Do K-Dramas Reflect Back To Me?29 Jul 202600:55:09

It's only Lia in the studio tonight...and is it going to be debauchery, and fingers in mouths, and no "Amy Button" in sight? Ha! No! It's all melancholic reflections and enough confessionals to rival any 90's era album.

While K-Dramas started as an escape, Lia shares how they quickly became a mirror, reflecting self (good and uncomfortable). From My Mister and the stillness it asked for before she was ready to give it, to Her Private Life and the ache of wanting to be met in joy, to why does she return to one specific drama for comfort — she reflects on love, homesickness, family, and the parts of herself she'd rather not admit she recognizes
.

Because that's the strange gift that can often happen with a good story: you think you are  watching them. Turns out, the whole time, you were watching yourself.

Afternoona Lore18 Feb 202601:15:47

Your noonas have been at this podcasting thing for over five years now, and that means we have a lot of anecdotes, jokes, and even patron-created puns that we reference all the tme (Kim Fin, anyone?). But we also realize (and LOVE) that we get new listeners every day who may not be up on all the Afternoona lore yet. So along with help from our patrons (who seem to know us better than we know ourselves), we deep dive the origin stories if everything from the Amy Stop Button to Lia's short-lived stint on Top Chef, to Megan's life-altering hike up Mount Washington. Welcome to Afternoona Lore.

Microtropes04 Feb 202600:52:48

This week we're diving into the delicious details—our favorite microtropes in K-drama! We've covered the big ones (enemies to lovers, marriage of convenience, "I can fix him"), but now we want to talk about those smaller, niche story elements that add that extra spark. You know: the hero who perpetually rolls up his shirtsleeves, the secret cat dad, the boss babe who can't organize her own life (Love Scout, anyone?), the heroine who burns water, the hero who cooks like a dream, meaningful tattoos—all those little touches that make you swoon.

We get a lot of great feedback from the Patreon, but what are your favorite K-drama microtropes? Let us know!

SOS Endings14 Jan 202600:54:25

2026 might be just beginning, but your Afternoona's are looking at endings. In particular endings that didn't quite land for us so we took a stab at rewriting them. See if you agree :)

And warning: Lia almost WAS ended the morning she recorded. Seriously. Amy doesn't need to use the "Amy Button" to shut down the story, but fair warning it's pretty gross.

Heated Rivalry: Get in, Babes. We're Going to the Cottage.31 Dec 202501:10:26

Get in Babes, We're Going to the Cottage. Amy, Lia, and Megan take a departure from Seoul and dive headfirst in Canada to talk about our new obsession, the queer hockey romance TV series, Heated Rivalry, based on the Game Changers book series by Rachel Reid. This isn't a deep dive, and instead we discuss all the ways that the show's creator Jacob Tierney nails the romance novel conventions and gives us the best romance adaptation we have ever seen. Also, we learn rivalry is a hard word to say out loud repeatedly.

Books mentioned:
Hamartia by Scarlett Drake
Show Me Wonders by Riley Nash
The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee

Hear Us Out, Netflix10 Dec 202501:02:22

There's an unspoken hierarchy in TV here where romance is tolerated as a subplot but rarely trusted to carry a series. Why do you think American platforms are comfortable betting hundreds of millions on crime, fantasy, and superheroes but get nervous about a straightforward love story? This week, your noonas tackle this very questions and are making a plea to the streaming channels. We know romance. We know K-dramas. Please, for the love of the highest grossing genre in publishing, hear us out as to why we need to follow the K-Drama model and adapt more romance novels for the small screen.

The Bechdel Test in Korean Dramas19 Nov 202500:50:58

This week Lia, Megan and Amy get into The Bechdel Test in Korean dramas. How does a piece of media pass The Bechdel Test? Memories of Murder08 Oct 202501:24:24

Before Parasite made him a household name, Bong Joon-ho crafted a haunting masterpiece. Memories of Murder (released in 2003) tells the story of two detectives in 1980s rural South Korea hunting the country's first known serial killer...a case that would remain unsolved for over 30 years. Based on the true story of the Hwaseong serial murders, the film is a devastating exploration of incompetence, corruption, and misogyny.

Join Lia & Megan as we revisit the muddy fields, cramped interrogation rooms, and that final iconic haunting shot.

Note: We recorded this episode in early June right before Lia went to South Korea. This was before we began using video software so please note that component won't be included in this episode.
