The Summer I Thought We Were Getting Closer10 Sep 202600:18:01

The summer of 2022 gave me another reason to believe everything was going to be okay.

My middle son called me constantly asking to go to the amusement park—we went 11 times that summer. Sometimes his siblings came, sometimes friends and cousins joined us, and every trip made me believe our relationship was getting stronger. My oldest was driving, working, and becoming more independent, while my daughter spent so much time at my house with her friends that I joked I had three daughters instead of one.

From the outside, we looked connected. We were connected. That's what makes what happened next so difficult to understand.

Then, at the end of the summer, my daughter was registered for dance. I walked into a familiar dance studio simply to buy her shoes, having no idea that this place would eventually become connected to both some of the greatest sadness—and greatest happiness—of my life.

In Episode 104 of After the Quiet, I reflect on the difference between happy memories and false hope, the early stages of family estrangement, and the summer when I truly believed my relationships with my children were getting stronger.

New episodes every Tuesday and Thursday.

False Glimmer of Hope08 Sep 202600:14:47

In July 2022, after months of growing tension and distance, I took all three of my children on a week-long vacation to visit my extended family. For a little while, everything felt normal again.

We took pontoon boat rides, spent time at a tiny beach, attempted paddle boarding, squeezed together into a little bunk house, laughed with family, and made memories. I came home believing that maybe we were going to be okay.

I didn't know it would be the last family vacation I would ever take with all three of my children.

In Episode 103 of After the Quiet, I reflect on another false glimmer of hope during the early stages of family estrangement and what I now understand as parental alienation. It's an episode about the lasts we don't recognize while we're living them—and the ordinary memories that become priceless when the next one never comes.

Big Steps Back03 Sep 202600:15:45

It didn't happen overnight. It happened in inches.

By early 2022, getting my teenage sons to school during my parenting time had become such a struggle that I made a decision I would later regret: I told them they could decide when they wanted to stay with me. I thought removing the fight would protect our relationship. Instead, our everyday time together slowly began disappearing.

Then, after simply checking on my sick son while his father was out of town, I received a call from the police. Suddenly, I was being told I could no longer step onto my ex-husband's property—even to help my children carry their belongings to the door.

In Episode 102 of After the Quiet, I look back at the small changes that I now recognize as the beginning of parental alienation: fewer school nights, hidden rides home, increasing distance, shifting boundaries, and ordinary parenting moments becoming sources of conflict.

At the time, each incident seemed explainable. Looking back, I can see a pattern forming.

Finding love after abuse01 Sep 202600:17:09

After separating in 2019, I had finally become comfortable being alone. Then, during COVID, a spontaneous $9.99 Tinder purchase led me to the man who would become my partner. My children welcomed him, our families blended easily, and for the first time in years, life felt genuinely happy.

But beneath the amusement-park trips, skating nights, rides home from school, and new family memories, something was beginning to change. My ex started objecting to my partner's relationship with my sons, and slowly, my children began pulling away.

In Episode 101 of After the Quiet, I share how finding love after an abusive marriage gave me hope for a new beginning—and how that happiness became another source of conflict after separation. What looked like a peaceful new chapter was about to become the beginning of a painful shift in my relationship with my children.

Calm Before The Storm: Co-Parenting 27 Aug 202600:09:49

Can an abusive relationship ever seem peaceful again? In Episode 100 of After the Quiet, I reflect on a surprising chapter during the COVID-19 pandemic when the conflict between my ex-husband and me appeared to quiet down. We co-parented more peacefully, he showed unexpected concern for my health, invited me to Christmas dinner with our children, and for the first time since our separation, I believed we might truly build a healthy co-parenting relationship. I also share how his new relationship brought hope for a united front for our children and why this period left me believing the worst was finally behind us. This episode explores coercive control, post-separation abuse, co-parenting after divorce, emotional manipulation, and the confusing moments when calm can make you believe lasting change is possible.

The Family I Thought I’d Lost25 Aug 202600:10:16

What if one of your greatest fears after leaving an abusive relationship never comes true? In Episode 99 of After the Quiet, I share the emotional story of attending my former husband's grandfather's funeral and the unexpected support I received from the family I thought I had lost forever. As I navigated co-parenting challenges, grief, and continued post-separation abuse, I discovered that the people who had known me for 24 years could see through the lies. This episode explores coercive control, post-separation abuse, family relationships, grief, and the healing that comes from being truly seen and believed. If you've ever feared losing an entire family after leaving a relationship, this episode is a reminder that genuine relationships are built on years of shared love—not on someone else's version of the truth.

Reunification Therapy, COVID, and Finding Peace20 Aug 202600:10:27

What happens when you're trying to rebuild your relationship with your children while navigating post-separation abuse? In Episode 98 of After the Quiet, I share the challenges of parenting after separation as my sons began living with me 50/50, the heartbreaking morning battles to get them to school, and the emotional toll of being told I was failing as a mother. I also discuss the reunification therapy that was meant to help repair our relationship, why it ultimately failed, and the unexpected lessons I learned from a therapist about boundaries and coercive control. Finally, I reflect on how the COVID-19 lockdowns—while devastating for so many—gave me something I hadn't experienced in years: a chance to breathe, connect with my children, and finally experience a small measure of peace. This episode explores post-separation abuse, reunification therapy, parental alienation, coercive control, and the complicated journey of healing after leaving an abusive relationship.

False Children’s Aid Reports18 Aug 202600:09:59

What happens when false reports to Children's Aid become another form of post-separation abuse? In Episode 97 of After the Quiet, I share the emotional impact of being investigated twice by Children's Aid Society after anonymous allegations claimed my home was unsafe, I abused alcohol, and I neglected my children. Despite both investigations finding no concerns, the experience left me questioning every parenting decision I made. I also share the heartbreaking moment my oldest son lashed out after I set a boundary, and how coercive control continued to affect my relationship with my children long after I left the marriage. This episode explores post-separation abuse, coercive control, false allegations, parental alienation, and the lasting emotional toll of trying to parent under constant scrutiny.

Starting Over After Separation 13 Aug 202600:10:06

What does it really mean to start over after leaving an abusive relationship? In Episode 96 of After the Quiet, I share what life looked like after selling our family home and moving in with my mother while my ex settled into a new house. I talk about the heartbreaking reality of trying to reconnect with my sons, believing I had to spend money to earn their love, the challenges of qualifying for a mortgage without a separation agreement, and the joy of finally buying my own home just before my 40th birthday. This episode explores post-separation abuse, coercive control, parental alienation, reunification therapy, and the emotional journey of rebuilding a life after domestic abuse. If you've ever wondered what comes after leaving, this episode offers an honest look at the challenges—and the hope—of starting over.

The Things I Never Got Back11 Aug 202600:09:38

What do you really lose when you leave an abusive relationship? In Episode 95 of After the Quiet, I share the emotional experience of returning to our family home after separation to pack my belongings—only to find the primary bedroom locked, treasured keepsakes inaccessible, and many of the household items we had agreed to divide already gone. I reflect on the grief of losing irreplaceable memories, the physical toll trauma took on my body, and how abuse continues to affect survivors long after they leave. This episode explores post-separation abuse, coercive control, trauma stored in the body, and the long journey of healing. If you've ever wondered why survivors can still be triggered years later, this episode offers a deeply personal perspective on recovery and resilience.

Selling the house = New friend06 Aug 202600:09:39

Selling a family home after separation should be straightforward—but when coercive control is involved, even a real estate transaction can become another form of abuse. In Episode 94 of After the Quiet, I share the emotional story of selling our home after I left my marriage. From intimidation and manipulation to a smear campaign targeting our realtor, this episode explores how post-separation abuse extended far beyond our relationship. I also reflect on the unexpected friendship that emerged from one of the darkest chapters of my life, and what it was like rebuilding my life while living with my mother as our house proceeds remained tied up in legal proceedings. This episode offers a personal look at coercive control, separation, divorce, and the challenges of starting over after abuse.

The Smear Campaign 04 Aug 202600:10:55

What happens when an abuser doesn't let go after you leave? In Episode 93 of After the Quiet, I share how the abuse changed after separation through a devastating smear campaign. False accusations of affairs, lies told to my children, family, friends, neighbours, and coworkers, and years of retaliation became the next chapter of coercive control. I also discuss the lasting impact these lies had on my children and why abuse doesn't always end when a relationship does. This episode explores post-separation abuse, parental alienation, emotional manipulation, and the long-term effects of coercive control. If you're supporting a survivor or trying to understand what happens after someone leaves an abusive relationship, this episode offers an honest and deeply personal perspective.

Why Didn’t I Leave Sooner?30 Jul 202600:11:06

Why do people stay in abusive relationships? In Episode 92 of After the Quiet, I answer one of the most common questions survivors are asked: "Why didn't you leave sooner?" I share the complexities behind my decision to stay—from the happy years at the beginning of my marriage, to blaming stress and myself for his behaviour, to the comfort of a close-knit extended family, financial stability, and the carefully crafted image he presented to the world. This episode explores why coercive control is so difficult to recognize and why the good moments never erase the abuse. If you've ever wondered why survivors stay, this honest conversation offers insight, compassion, and understanding.

Other Flags I Missed28 Jul 202600:10:06

What happens when even reading a book, saying hello to a neighbour, or enjoying a quiet moment becomes a reason for punishment? In Episode 91 of After the Quiet, I share the everyday acts of emotional abuse and coercive control that slowly stripped away my identity. From humiliation disguised as a joke to false accusations of affairs, this episode explores how coercive control invades every corner of a person's life, leaving them isolated, fearful, and questioning their own reality. If you've ever wondered how emotional abuse escalates without leaving visible bruises, this episode offers an honest look inside that experience.

The Day I Left17 Jul 202600:09:26

In Episode 90 of After the Quiet, I share the day I finally left my marriage after years of coercive control, emotional abuse, and psychological manipulation. Following another sleepless night of interrogations and phone searches, I reached my breaking point. What began as a simple drive to get a coffee became the moment that changed the course of my life.

Wearing our pajamas, my young daughter and I drove to her friend's house instead of the coffee shop. When her friend's mother opened the door and asked a simple question, I broke down. For the first time, I told someone everything that had been happening behind closed doors. Her compassion and encouragement led me to my mother's house, where I finally admitted that I couldn't go back.

When my husband called the next day, his first concern wasn't my well-being or our marriage—it was what his extended family would think. That response confirmed what I had begun to realize: I had been valued more for the image I helped create than for who I was as a person.

Episode 90 explores the breaking point that leads many survivors to leave abusive relationships, the power of being believed, choosing safety, and the first steps toward rebuilding a life after coercive control. It is a story of courage, support, and discovering that asking for help can be the beginning of healing.

The Moment I Realized I Wasn’t Safe 15 Jul 202600:06:57

In Episode 89 of After the Quiet, I share the moment that changed everything. While I often say a Dr. Phil episode helped me recognize the signs of coercive control, it was a heartbreaking Ontario news story that made me realize something even more frightening—I was no longer convinced I was safe.

After learning about the tragic death of a young girl during a custody visit, I was shocked by my husband's reaction. Instead of expressing compassion for the child and her family, he blamed the girl's mother. Hearing those words fundamentally changed how I viewed my own situation. It was the first time I stopped asking how I could survive the abuse and started asking how I could safely leave.

This episode explores coercive control, emotional abuse, victim blaming, psychological manipulation, domestic abuse, fear, and the pivotal moments that lead survivors to recognize the seriousness of their circumstances. It is a personal reflection on how one conversation can completely change your understanding of your own safety.

He Stole My Evidence 13 Jul 202600:09:26

In Episode 88 of After the Quiet, I share the moment I realized that nowhere felt safe anymore. After secretly documenting months of coercive control, gaslighting, and emotional abuse in a notebook hidden in my car, it suddenly disappeared while I was attending an MRI appointment. To this day, I don't know how he knew it existed, but it reinforced the overwhelming feeling that I was constantly being watched.

As the abuse escalated, he demanded my phone before work, claimed it had been examined by a private investigator, and insisted there was evidence of affairs that he could never produce. Every accusation left me trying to prove my innocence while my own reality slipped further away.

Unable to cope with the relentless stress, I couldn't bring myself to go home after work. Instead, I parked in a store parking lot and reached out using public Wi-Fi. He responded by calling the police. That night became a turning point as I admitted I could no longer live under the constant fear, surveillance, and psychological abuse.

This episode explores coercive control, surveillance, stalking behaviours, gaslighting, emotional abuse, false accusations, psychological manipulation, and the devastating toll prolonged abuse can take on a person's mental health. It is a deeply personal story about reaching a breaking point—and surviving it.

Marital Rape, Coercive Control & Losing Myself10 Jul 202600:09:26

In Episode 87 of After the Quiet, I share one of the most difficult chapters of my story. As the coercive control in my marriage intensified, I began keeping a notebook to document the accusations, late-night interrogations, and gaslighting because I no longer trusted my own memory. I was living in survival mode, losing weight, experiencing constant anxiety, and waking each day unsure of what emotional attack awaited me.

This episode also discusses sexual abuse within marriage and the painful realization that consent does not disappear because you are married. After confiding in my therapist about being raped by my husband, she encouraged me to report it to the police. At the time, I didn't understand that marital rape was recognized as rape, and I never made that report—a decision I still reflect on today.

Episode 87 explores the devastating effects of coercive control, gaslighting, emotional abuse, sexual coercion, marital rape, body image, shame, manipulation, and the long-term impact of living in fear. It is a deeply personal account intended to raise awareness that abuse can take many forms, including those that remain hidden behind closed doors.

Dividing My Life08 Jul 202600:08:04

What happens when someone repeatedly forces you to imagine losing everything you love—only to pretend the conversation never happened the next day?

In Episode 86 of After the Quiet, I share one of the most psychologically damaging forms of coercive control I experienced. My husband would wake me in the middle of the night, hand me a laptop, and make me create lists of what each of us would get "if we divorced." Every possession became another opportunity to remind me that if I left, I would lose everything—including the dog he knew I loved most.

The next morning, he would act as though none of it had ever happened. No mention of the late-night conversations. No acknowledgment of the fear or emotional exhaustion. Instead, he wanted to spend time together as a happy family, leaving me questioning my own memory and reality.

This episode explores gaslighting, sleep deprivation, psychological abuse, coercive control, fear-based manipulation, and how abusers use uncertainty to keep their partners trapped. If you've ever felt like you were constantly questioning your own reality, this episode may help you recognize that confusion can be a deliberate tactic of abuse.

Tracking, Paranoia, Constant Accusations 06 Jul 202600:06:48

In Episode 85 of After the Quiet, I share how my husband's paranoia and need for control escalated into relentless surveillance. The constant text messages never stopped. My phone was regularly searched, my privacy disappeared, and every interaction became something I was forced to defend. When suspicion becomes a tool of control, exhaustion becomes a way of life.

This episode explores the hidden reality of coercive control, including obsessive jealousy, accusations of infidelity, phone monitoring, sleep deprivation, and psychological abuse. I also reflect on how public appearances often hid a very different reality behind closed doors, where fear, hypervigilance, and the need to constantly prove my innocence had become my everyday life.

If you've ever questioned whether extreme jealousy, tracking, or constant accusations are signs of abuse, this episode offers insight into how these behaviours can gradually isolate and control a partner.

He Tried To Take My Career03 Jul 202600:12:15

Can emotional abuse follow you into the workplace? In Episode 84 of After the Quiet, I share how my husband threatened to contact my employer unless I took a leave of absence from teaching. What appeared to be concern for my mental health was, in reality, another attempt to control my career, independence, and future. This episode explores coercive control, workplace intimidation, emotional abuse, anxiety, and the moment I realized I needed legal support to protect myself.

“If you leave, I’ll destroy you.”01 Jul 202600:12:15

Can your partner control you through money? In Episode 83 of After the Quiet, I discuss discovering thousands of dollars missing from my bank account, the financial abuse that followed, and the terrifying threats made after my husband learned I had contacted a lawyer. Through therapy, I began to understand that abuse isn't just physical—it can include financial control, intimidation, and making someone believe they have nowhere to go. This episode explores coercive control, emotional abuse, financial manipulation, and the first steps toward planning a safe future.

“You’re being abused.”29 Jun 202600:13:38

What happens when you finally recognize your own story in someone else's? In Episode 82 of After the Quiet, I share how watching a television program about a controlling marriage led me to recognize the signs of coercive control in my own life. From relentless accusations of cheating and panic attacks to seeking therapy and hearing the words, "You're being abused," this episode explores emotional abuse, gaslighting, projection, and the profound impact of finally having a name for what you've been living through.

“This Year I Ruin You “26 Jun 202600:13:25

In Episode 81 of After the Quiet, I share how a staff Christmas party became another opportunity for control, criticism, and emotional abuse. After previously agreeing that I could stay overnight at a friend's house, my husband suddenly changed the rules and accused me of being a bad mother. The relentless berating pushed me to my breaking point, leading me to disappear for an entire day just to escape the pressure. This episode explores coercive control, isolation, workplace intimidation, emotional exhaustion, and a chilling threat made during a family vacation to Cuba: "2019 will be the year I ruin you." If you've ever experienced shifting expectations, punishment for independence, or emotional manipulation disguised as concern, this episode will resonate with you.

The Green Dot24 Jun 202600:09:33

Why would someone demand to see your phone while you're sleeping? In Episode 80 of After the Quiet, I discuss the reality of coercive control, digital surveillance, phone monitoring, social media accusations, and the panic attacks that followed. This personal story sheds light on how emotional abuse can erode privacy, increase anxiety, and leave lasting impacts on mental health.

The Neighbourhood War23 Jun 202600:11:30

In Episode 79 of After the Quiet, I share the story of a neighbourhood conflict that escalated far beyond a simple disagreement. What began as ongoing disputes with neighbours eventually led to police involvement, criminal mischief charges, and a courtroom filled with evidence documenting years of escalating behaviour.

As neighbours gathered videos, submitted supporting letters, and demanded accountability, I found myself caught in the middle of a conflict I never wanted. What affected me most wasn't the legal proceedings—it was reading letters from neighbours who expressed concern for me and my children. People who only saw fragments of our lives had become worried about what they were witnessing.

“You’re Doing It Wrong.”19 Jun 202600:08:21

In Episode 78 of After the Quiet, I share how my decision to start a fitness and nutrition program became another target for criticism in my marriage. After years of being told I needed to lose weight, exercise more, and take better care of myself, I finally found a routine that worked. I was seeing results, gaining confidence, and feeling healthier than I had in years.

But instead of encouragement, I was met with ridicule. My workouts were mocked, my progress was dismissed, and I was told I wasn't exercising the "right" way. Looking back, I realized the criticism was never really about my weight or fitness. It was about keeping me questioning myself and seeking approval that would never come.

This episode explores emotional abuse, coercive control, body image, self-esteem, fitness journeys, and the damaging impact of constant criticism. It's a story about learning that growth doesn't require someone else's permission and that your accomplishments still matter, even when others refuse to celebrate them.

His Mask Slipped in Front of Friends 17 Jun 202600:09:56

In Episode 77 of After the Quiet, I share the moment friends and neighbours witnessed the way my husband spoke to me behind closed doors. What began as a casual afternoon around the pool with food, drinks, and conversation quickly turned uncomfortable when he publicly ridiculed me for wanting to attend a year-end staff social with my coworkers.

As he mocked my interests and questioned whether I should be "allowed" to attend, our friends pushed back in a way I had never seen before. For the first time, people outside our home saw the criticism, control, and disrespect that had become normal in my marriage. Later that evening, concerned text messages from friends revealed something I wasn't yet ready to accept: what I was experiencing wasn't normal, and people who cared about me could see it clearly.

This episode explores emotional abuse, coercive control, public humiliation, gaslighting, and the powerful moment when others begin recognizing the signs before the person living through it does. It's a story about friendship, support, and the first cracks in a carefully maintained mask.

“I hope you never do that again.”15 Jun 202600:11:46

In Episode 76 of After the Quiet, I share how criticism of my appearance became another tool of control within my marriage. What began with a simple haircut quickly revealed a much deeper pattern of body shaming, insults, and attacks on my self-esteem. I was told I wasn't attractive, that I dressed poorly, that I needed to lose weight, and that I looked old. Over time, those comments chipped away at my confidence and changed the way I saw myself.

This episode also explores the confusing contradiction between constant criticism and constant sexual expectations. Despite being told daily that I wasn't attractive enough, I was still expected to be available whenever he wanted intimacy, often after waiting up late for him to return from the gym or motorcycle club events. Looking back, I can see how criticism and control worked together to keep me questioning my worth.

Episode 76 examines emotional abuse, coercive control, body shaming, self-esteem, sexual entitlement within marriage, and the long-term impact of being viewed through someone else's critical lens. It's a story about reclaiming self-worth and learning that real love builds confidence rather than destroying it.

The Family Reunion He Did Not Want To Attend 12 Jun 202600:09:49

In Episode 75 of After the Quiet, I share the story of a family reunion in Mont Tremblant that was meant to bring generations together and create lasting memories. Despite my excitement to spend time with family, reconnect with relatives, and watch my children build relationships with their cousins, the trip became another example of emotional distance and isolation within my marriage.

After initially refusing to attend and pushing for a vacation down south instead, my husband eventually agreed to come—but only if we stayed separately from my family. Once there, while everyone else embraced the winter activities, laughter, and family connection, he chose to remain isolated inside the cabin. Looking back, I reflect on how often I found myself making excuses for his absence and trying to explain behaviour that I didn't fully understand myself.

This episode explores emotional neglect, family dynamics, isolation from loved ones, controlling behaviour, and the realization that some of the happiest moments happened when I stopped trying to convince someone else to participate in the joy around them.

Property Of09 Jun 202600:11:38

In Episode 74 of After the Quiet, I share my experience attending the motorcycle club ceremony where my husband officially became a patched member after more than a year as a prospect. While he viewed the event as a major achievement, I quickly realized I had stepped into a culture that felt completely foreign to me.

From being introduced solely as "his wife" to learning that members' spouses were expected to wear shirts labeled "Property Of," I found myself increasingly uncomfortable with the expectations placed on women within the club. As the evening unfolded, I witnessed behaviours and dynamics that reinforced my concerns and left me certain that I wanted no part of the lifestyle.

What happened after he became a full member surprised even him. Closed-door meetings revealed aspects of the club he hadn't seen as a prospect, and eventually he admitted that some of the expectations being placed on members crossed personal and legal boundaries. The same organization he had worked so hard to join ultimately demanded the return of his patches, clothing, and club property.

This episode explores identity, belonging, control, motorcycle club culture, personal boundaries, and the importance of trusting your instincts when something doesn't feel right.

The Night I Didn’t Come Home 08 Jun 202600:12:42

In Episode 73 of After the Quiet, I share the story of a girls' night out that unexpectedly became another turning point in my understanding of control and isolation. After attending a surprise birthday celebration for a friend, I made the responsible decision not to drive home after drinking alcohol. Instead, I stayed overnight at a friend's family member's house and informed my husband exactly where I would be.

What followed was a series of accusations, suspicions, and angry messages directed not only at me but also at my friends. As he questioned my whereabouts and accused me of inappropriate behaviour, he also contacted one of my closest friends, criticizing her for not bringing me home. The fallout from that night permanently changed my friendships and left the people closest to me reluctant to communicate with me outside of work.

This episode explores emotional abuse, coercive control, jealousy, social isolation, interference in friendships, and how controlling behaviour can gradually shrink a person's support network. It's a story about making a safe decision, paying an unexpected price for it, and recognizing how isolation can happen one friendship at a time.

“You Spend Too Much Time On Your Phone “05 Jun 202600:12:42

In Episode 72 of After the Quiet, I share how two close workplace friendships became another source of tension and control in my marriage. When a friend experienced a devastating late-term pregnancy loss, another coworker and I wanted to support her by planning a girls' getaway. What seemed like a simple act of friendship was quickly dismissed and shut down at home.

At the same time, I found myself being monitored and questioned about my phone use. Messages sent through WhatsApp while planning Halloween costumes with friends became evidence, in his eyes, that I was spending too much time online. Looking back, I can see that the issue was never social media—it was the fact that I was maintaining meaningful connections outside of our relationship.

This episode explores emotional abuse, coercive control, isolation from friends, monitoring of communication, grief, and the importance of supportive relationships. It's a story about friendship, connection, and how controlling partners often feel threatened when you begin building a support system of your own.

The Pool Party He Almost Missed03 Jun 202600:12:42

In Episode 71 of After the Quiet, I share the story behind the backyard pool we built after selling our family trailer. What started as a dream of creating summer memories for our children quickly became another example of mismatched priorities, emotional neglect, and the pressure to protect appearances at all costs.

After taking on a significant loan to create the ultimate backyard oasis—complete with a waterfall, hot tub, fire pit, and cabana—the long-awaited pool party finally arrived. But on the very day friends and family gathered to celebrate, my husband chose a motorcycle club commitment over his own family and expected me to cover for his absence.

This episode explores emotional labour, maintaining appearances, single parenting while married, family expectations, and the exhausting role of protecting someone else's image while carrying the weight of everything behind the scenes. It's a story about summer dreams, hidden disappointments, and the growing realization that I was doing it all alone.

The Soccer Games He Never Came To01 Jun 202600:12:42

In Episode 70 of After the Quiet, I share the story of my middle son's journey into competitive rep soccer and the sacrifices our family made to support his talent. From weeknight practices to early morning games across the region, I became the parent responsible for getting him where he needed to be while juggling two other children and a marriage that increasingly felt one-sided.

This episode explores emotional neglect, single parenting while married, childhood disappointment, and the heartbreaking moment my son tried to call his father after a big win—only to have the phone ring unanswered. As I watched my son's excitement fade, I realized how often I was stepping in to fill emotional gaps that shouldn't have existed. It's a story about parenting, resilience, and the painful realization that showing up matters more than words.

Why Would She Pick You?29 May 202600:10:04

In Episode 69 of After the Quiet, I share a deeply meaningful moment when my husband's cousin's daughter asked me to be her Confirmation sponsor. What should have been a joyful and affirming experience quickly became another source of criticism, jealousy, and emotional manipulation. Instead of celebrating the honour, I found myself defending why I deserved it.

This episode explores emotional abuse, self-worth, jealousy, and the ways controlling partners can undermine moments of recognition and accomplishment. I reflect on the importance of supportive friendships, the people who encouraged me to stand up for myself, and how being chosen for such an important role helped me begin to see my own value again. It's a story about validation, confidence, and the people who remind us who we are when others try to make us forget.

The Motorcycle Club That Took Him Away From His Family 27 May 202600:08:51

In Episode 68 of After the Quiet, I share how my husband's involvement in a motorcycle club gradually consumed more and more of his time, leaving me to manage the household and raise our children largely on my own. What started as a hobby I supported quickly became another commitment that took priority over family plans, weekends together, and meaningful time with our children.

This episode explores emotional neglect, isolation within marriage, single parenting while still married, and the subtle ways partners can become increasingly absent from family life. I also reflect on attending a motorcycle club Christmas party, my growing discomfort with the club's culture, and the realization that I was becoming accustomed to doing everything alone. It's a story about absence, shifting priorities, and recognizing when a relationship no longer feels like a partnership.

I Broke My Wrist And Still Had To Do Everything 25 May 202600:10:06

In Episode 67 of After the Quiet, I share how an accident on the very first day of school in a brand-new building led to a fractured wrist, surgery, and one of the clearest examples of emotional neglect in my marriage. While recovering from broken bones, surgery, and severe pain, I was still expected to manage the household, care for the children, and meet everyone else's needs—with little to no support from my spouse.

This episode explores emotional abuse, neglect during illness and injury, coercive control, the importance of support systems, and the painful realization that the people who truly showed up for me were not always the people I expected. I Wasn’t Allowed To Shine22 May 202600:09:00

In Episode 66 of After the Quiet, I share how accepting the opportunity to help open a brand new school became another source of anger and control in my marriage. What should have been an exciting and empowering professional milestone was met with jealousy, criticism, and accusations that I wanted attention or was becoming “too involved” in my career.

As I stepped into a creative, collaborative school environment where I felt valued and supported, the contrast between my work life and home life became impossible to ignore. This episode explores emotional abuse, isolation, professional identity, workplace empowerment, and how controlling partners often feel threatened when their spouse begins rebuilding confidence and independence.

It Was About Control20 May 202600:08:40

In Episode 65 of After the Quiet, I share the painful moment I was told I couldn’t attend a concert by my favourite artist because it was considered “frivolous” spending—only for that artist to pass away weeks later. What seemed like an argument about money was actually something much deeper: control over joy, independence, and self-worth.

This episode explores financial abuse, emotional manipulation, hidden bank accounts, guilt around spending, and the double standards that often exist in controlling relationships. While I was made to feel selfish for wanting one night for myself, thousands of dollars were quietly being spent elsewhere without question. It was never really about the concert—it was about control.

I Drove Myself To The Hospital 18 May 202600:09:55

In Episode 64 of After the Quiet, I share the night I broke my ankle at my children’s soccer practice—and was left to deal with it completely alone. What began as a simple accident quickly revealed something much deeper: a pattern of emotional neglect, dismissal, and coercive control that had become normalized in my marriage.

As I struggled in pain, cared for my children from the couch, and eventually drove myself to the hospital with a broken ankle, I began to realize how little my wellbeing truly mattered to the person who claimed to love me. This episode explores emotional abuse, medical neglect, gaslighting, and the damaging impact of being repeatedly told your pain is “dramatic.”

Grief, Control, and Missing Goodbyes 15 May 202600:11:41

In Episode 63 of After the Quiet, I share one of the most painful chapters of my life—losing my aunt and my father while living under intense coercive control. As my aunt battled terminal cancer, I was prevented from visiting her before she passed away. Shortly afterward, my father was hospitalized with aspiration pneumonia, and once again, control and manipulation limited the time I could spend with someone I loved deeply.

This episode explores grief, regret, emotional abuse, caregiving, family loss, and the devastating impact of coercive control during moments when support and connection matter most. It’s a story about mourning not only the people we lose—but also the time and memories taken from us.

My Health Scare13 May 202600:09:22

In Episode 62 of After the Quiet, I share the terrifying health scare that shifted my focus away from my collapsing marriage and onto my own survival. What started as a small lump in my abdomen quickly led to ultrasounds, MRIs, referrals to a cancer hospital, biopsies, and the frightening possibility of cancer.

As I navigated medical uncertainty, I was also dealing with emotional abuse, overwhelming stress, and unimaginable grief—including the loss of my grandmother, aunt, and father within a short period of time. This episode explores survival mode, fear, grief, and how coercive control can intensify even during life’s most devastating moments.

“It’s Your Husband’s Child”11 May 202600:09:22

In Episode 61 of After the Quiet, I share the moment I received a Facebook message that changed everything: a photo of a positive pregnancy test with the words, “It’s your husband’s child.” What followed was a web of manipulation, conflicting stories, emotional chaos, and the painful realization that multiple people were being lied to at the same time.

This episode explores infidelity, coercive control, gaslighting, and the shame that keeps so many women silent. As I tried to hold my family together, the truth became harder to ignore—and just when everything felt completely out of control, a personal health scare shifted my focus entirely.

The House Sold — When Big Decisions Keep You Stuck 08 May 202600:09:23

In Episode 60 of After the Quiet, I share the moment everything shifted—our house sold. What should have been a logistical step during separation quickly became a life-altering decision: move forward separately or stay together and try to fix the marriage. Despite plans to downsize and rebuild, we ended up in a bigger home, farther away, and deeper in a cycle of control.

This episode explores how major life transitions—like selling a home and moving—can overshadow deeper relationship issues, making it easier to stay in unhealthy dynamics. If you’ve ever ignored your instincts to keep things together for your family, this story will resonate.

He Called My Mom: Manipulation & Regret06 May 202600:11:33

In Episode 59 of After the Quiet, I share how my ex reached out to my mom during our separation, presenting himself as remorseful and desperate to fix our family. What followed was a push toward marriage counselling—despite everything that had already happened. In these sessions, blame was shifted onto me, accountability was avoided, and deeper patterns of manipulation and control were revealed.

This episode explores how abusers can use family, guilt, and even therapy to regain control, and how difficult it can be to walk away when life feels overwhelming. If you’ve ever questioned whether to stay or leave, or felt pressured to “fix” something that was already broken, this story will resonate deeply.

Isolation by Design04 May 202600:10:54

In Episode 58 of After the Quiet, I share how coercive control doesn’t stop at the relationship—it extends to the people around you. After two of his own family members became my support system during our separation, he intervened with threats and intimidation, forcing them to cut ties with me. What followed was a deep and painful isolation—not just for me, but for my children, who also lost meaningful friendships.

This episode explores how abusers isolate their partners by controlling relationships, instilling fear in others, and creating a sense of shame and silence. If you’ve ever felt alone, unsupported, or unsure why people started to disappear from your life, this story will help you recognize the patterns and understand that it’s not your fault.

“No Changes to the Schedule” — When Co-Parenting Becomes Control01 May 202600:09:47

In Episode 57 of After the Quiet, I share how a seemingly simple parenting schedule became another tool of control. During the early stages of separation, I asked to switch a single day so my young daughter could attend her aunt’s baby shower—a meaningful family event surrounded by cousins her age. Despite offering reasonable compromises, the request was denied, revealing a deeper pattern of manipulation and emotional control.

This episode explores how rigid co-parenting arrangements can be used to isolate, punish, and maintain power, even when it impacts the children. If you’ve ever questioned whether something “small” is actually part of a larger pattern, this story will help you see it more clearly.

Trapped at Home — When Control Means You Can’t Leave 29 Apr 202600:10:31

In Episode 56 of After the Quiet, I share the day I realized control had gone even deeper—I was being physically prevented from leaving my home. After planning a simple summer playdate for my kids, I discovered all the car keys had been taken and vehicles were deliberately blocked in the driveway. What followed was another police visit and a painful realization about coercive control, isolation, and how abuse can escalate in subtle but powerful ways.

This episode sheds light on non-physical forms of abuse, including restriction of movement, manipulation, and using children as leverage. If you’ve ever questioned whether something “counts” as abuse, this story may help you see the patterns more clearly.
