#141 After the Gig - "Do You Know Your First Amendment!?!?" Feat. Jon Markel19 Nov 202501:08:38

Jon Markel stops by the studio and we end up talking about everything—First Amendment audit videos (and why Jon’s obsessed with them), sovereign citizens, getting frisked by cops as teenagers, and why I will never forgive my neighbor for the BB gun incident. We also get into stage accidents, Jon’s ongoing feud with his neighbor over backyard fires and asthma complaints, and what happened when Lola passed out on stage mid-performance. Plus: why touring musicians still make 1980s money, Shawn Mendes canceling his tour, and Jon’s dream of becoming the Pedro Pascal of bass players.00:00 Introduction and Guest Introduction00:09 First Impressions of the Studio00:31 First Amendment Videos Discussion08:15 Sovereign Citizens and Police Interactions11:59 Personal Stories and Police Encounters19:35 Neighbor Feuds and Petty Conflicts34:32 Addressing Personal Issues34:58 Concert Incident: Lola’s Collapse36:08 Analyzing Lola’s Fall41:28 Stage Mishaps and Embarrassments45:54 Public Bathroom Etiquette48:20 Shawn Mendes: Fanboy Moments and Critiques52:48 Touring Challenges and Music Industry Insights01:02:55 Gaelic Storm and the Life of a Bass Player01:08:11 Conclusion and Final Thoughts

#42 Rock Boat Recap - “I suck at basketball”05 Feb 202000:26:58

I’m back! Sorry for the delay, but I’ve been getting used to real life again.  It’s hard when there isn’t a buffet, non-stop live music, casino, beautiful weather, and a soft-serve ice cream machine available to you 24 hours a day.  And I know that now.  This episode is a short and sweet one to get back into the swing of things.  I answer some email and Patreon questions, and provide an overall rundown of my experience on the boat.  Enjoy!

#41 Jessica Martin - “What are we trying to do here?”15 Jan 202001:08:04

Jessica is a managers manager.  You know how I know that… I don’t, but if I did it would have sounded super cool.  Jess (as I affectionately call her), has been Stephen Kellogg’s manager for many years and has recently taken on a new client in Brian Dunne.  In my experience with working with Jess over the last few years, I have enjoyed her personal and professional approach to meeting my needs and I’m overwhelmed with joy to have had this conversation with her on my show! (Was that too over the top?)

All Jokes aside, Jess knows a TON about the music industry and what it takes to solve an artists day to day challenges along side setting them up to accomplish their big picture goals.  She’s one of my favorite people on the planet and I hope you enjoy the episode!

#40 Brian Dunne - “How are you going to put on pants, let alone write an album?”07 Jan 202001:09:41

Brian Dunne is a fantastic singing songwriter that I met while playing with Stephen Kellogg.  It turns out, we actually went to college together as well! I have been a fan of Brian’s music for a long time and getting to sit down with him before his gig in Newport was truly a pleasure.  Brian has a new album coming out on April 10th called “Selling Things” and he was kind enough to play a song off of this upcoming album for us.  Stay tuned till the end to check it out.  Enjoy the episode!

#37 Eric Hutchinson - “There’s no right or wrong way to do it”03 Dec 201901:03:59

This week on the podcast I am joined by the great Eric Hutchinson.  Eric and I met back in 2016 when I saw him open for Rachel Platten with his great band The Believers.  Later that year, Eric did a co-bill with Stephen Kellogg in the UK, and a couple months after that, I filled in for his drummer on a few shows in the midwest. Yes… I was a Believer for a week, and it was glorious.  Eric’s music is fun and insightful, and you’ll have a hard time not loving one of his albums.  You can check out all things Eric Hutchinson at www.erichutchinson.com. Today on the podcast I sit down with the other half of Native Run, Rachel Beauregard.  Rachel was nice enough to make some time to talk with me in her hotel room before she headed out to soundcheck for her show with Hozier at the wang theater in Boston.  Did I mention that she is currently singing background vocals for Hozier? No? Ok then.  We get  into a TON of topics and I excited for you to listen.  Enjoy!

#31 Joe Bentley - “Crazy world, lots of smells”16 Oct 201901:37:37

Joe Bentley is a bassist out of Rhode Island, but that doesn’t really tell the whole story, obviously.  When I met Joe in high school, he was a somewhat awkward guy that played football but could also play the s**t out of a bass guitar.  Somewhere along the line he found a passion for classical music, and since then he has dedicated himself to excellence as a musician and educator.  Please Enjoy this weeks episode

#130 Ed Valauskas - "Just play 8th notes and shut the f**k up"12 Nov 202401:19:56

Ed Valauskas is a Boston legend.  He's played with everyone, and produced some of the cities best musical exports from the comfy confines of Q division studios in Cambridge, MA.  Ed and I met back when my former band Love in Stockholm recorded our 3rd release "Hold Back the Sun". You can listen to that here: https://open.spotify.com/album/669ssJgNDfL41GIIBg5Rw5?si=mnTRnlNRRKSFLLLIehaAJQ

Ed is the musical director of the Hot Stove Cool Music event that happens every year in Boston.  It was started by Baseball hall of fame journalist Peter Gammons, and features an impressive roster of Boston sports heros that come together to play music.  Ed talks all about it in our chat as well as many other things! Enjoy

#15 Brandon Luciano 2 part 1 - “I Shot My Shot”25 Jun 201901:20:08

Today on the program is the man, the myth, the legend, Mr. Brandon Luciano.  You remember Brandon… The guy from episode 2.  Every time we get together to talk we have too many beers and end up taking 3 or 4 pee breaks.  So, to make this more digestible, I have broken it up into separate episodes.  Like the last time, Brandon and I cover a very wide range of topics such as meeting your idols, fame, my story about the night Tom Petty died and much more.

In todays intro I mention After the Gig’s upcoming Patreon page.  To learn more about it email the show at Afterthegigpod@gmail.com

#129 Pat Murphy - “I never wanted to do this!”30 Oct 202400:54:09

Today on the podcast I have the great Pat Murphy of Gaelic Storm.  The band was founded by Pat in 1996 and was featured in the record setting, blockbuster movie (one of the biggest films ever made) “Titanic”.  From then, they went on to a record deal and decades as a staple in the Irish music community.  Go to their website for tour dates.  You will not want to miss them when they come to your town!  Pat is one of my favorite people I’ve met in the music industry (and in general) and I hope you enjoy our chat half as much as I did.  Enjoy!

Well folks, I’m back from my adventure the wonderful country of Ireland and today on the podcast I am joined by a badass Boston based drummer named Dave Fox.  I hesitate to call Dave just a drummer because he is so much more than that.  He’s an educator, a touring musician, family man, and an inspiration for many players in the Boston area including myself.

Dave and I sit down in his home for a chat about growing up with music, learning the hustle, the Boston music scene and much more.  This was truly a pleasure.

#6 Stephen Kellogg - “The Guy I want least with me is the guy that was pissing on the beds”08 Apr 201901:47:09

Stephen Kellogg is a singer/songwriter that believes in hard work and family.  In my time playing drums and singing with Stephen I have learned countless lessons about so many things.  Things including but not limited to family, music, marriage, and where to get the junk food after the gig in every city.  I feel like the most important message/lesson SK delivers is to never give up.  From selling demos in the halls of his college dorm, to being signed to a major label.  From a band break up to working his way back to making (in my opinion) his best album yet, Stephen has shown over and over again that he’s in it for the long haul.  It is my pleasure to let you sit in on one of our chats.  Enjoy!

#4 Sara Mahoney - "It's a Good Thing I'm Not High Right Now"26 Mar 201901:07:36

The wonderful Sara Mahoney was a super fan, turned merch seller, turned tour manager for Stephen Kellogg.  Sara is one of the best people to be on the road with, because of her kindness, hard-work, and being the best van shotgun seat passenger in the game!  She is the first person I go to after the show for an honest opinion of how the show went, and she always tells it straight.  In this episode we talk about what it's like to be on the road with SK, greek yogurt, buying shoes, unruly fans, and a bunch of other stuff.  The featured music in this episode is "All the Love That Comes to Me", and "Irish Goodbye" by Stephen Kellogg (of course). Enjoy!!

#2 Brandon Luciano12 Mar 201902:29:03

Brandon Luciano loves all things music.  He has been a DJ, producer, manager, and also an avid listener (duh) for his entire existence.  Brandon and I met back in the brick and tile hallways of Western Hills Middle School in Cranston Rhode Island (it's been a while).  It was a pleasure to sit down and talk for a WHILE about being on a big tour with Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, the music that makes us feel nostalgic, and a whole bunch of other stuff that I can't really recall (we also had a few beers).  Send your thoughts in to afterthegigpod@gmail.com Enjoy!
