Laughing Through the Chaos: Psychedelics, Comedy and Society's Growing Pains | Nick Sun ~ ATTMind 19002 Aug 202401:36:32

In this episode of Adventures Through the Mind, we interview Nick Sun, stand up comedian, former psychedelic facilitator, and now the author of "No Mo Trippin".

We discuss Nick's personal experiences with psychedelics, including his high usage and how it led him to both become a facilitator and to stop facilitating; his criticisms of Western psychedelic culture; the concept of spiritual bypassing; and the challenges of integrating psychedelic experiences. We also touch on the potential of psychedelics for cultural change, the importance of responsible use and integration, and where comedy and humour fit into our navigation of the modern world and its many crises.

Enjoy.

cPTSD, The Climate Crisis, and Healing Trauma with Coral Reefs and Ayahuasca | Greg Wrenn (189)27 Jun 202401:45:21

We welcome Greg Wrenn to the show to share his experience of complex post-traumatic stress disorder (cPTSD) and how it was that his explorations of coral reefs and journeys with Ayahuasca turned the tide on his lifelong struggle with the condition.

Additionally, as both his experience of and healing from cPTSD is intertwined with his journalism on climate science, we also explore how the ecological and psychological effects of the climate crisis weave into our personal and collective experiences and expressions of trauma.

Enjoy

Psychedelics and the Healing Power of Love | Dr. Adele LaFrance09 Sep 202301:25:51

Dr. Adele Lafrance joins us to explore psychedelics and the healing power of Love.

Our conversation begins with an exploration of emotional processing and how difficulties and deficiencies in emotional processing both our mental health, our relationships, and our general wellbeing. We then step into psychedelics and the role they play in supporting our emotional processing capacities.

From there we turn towards Love, what it is and all the accidental ways we conflate it with things that can include love but aren’t love itself: romance, lust, infatuation, attachment, obsession, etc. We talk about the healing power of Love, both in our day-to-day lives and in various forms of healthcare, and why as a society we need to better learn how to wield and integrate that healing power of love. We then talk about encounters with Love as a transpersonal force during psychedelic experiences, the role of love in supporting people in their psychedelic experiences, and even the strange phenomenon of being harmed by too much Love on 5-MeO-DMT.

Of course, although love itself is not sex, with any mention of love we evoke consideration of sexuality, sexual dynamics, and sex itself. Thus, we also talk about sexual healing, the complexity of sexual energy and behaviour in therapy, and even the risks, challenges, and opportunities of having sex while on psychedelics.

A Jungian Approach To Psychedelic Integration | Maria Papaspyrou ~ ATTMind 10416 Aug 201901:38:41
We welcome Maria Papaspyrou to the show to discuss what Jungian Psychology has to say psychedelics in general and psychedelic integration in particular.

Maria is an integrative psychotherapist and systemic constellations facilitator in private practice in Brighton, UK. She has given talks and published articles on the sacramental and healing properties of entheogens, supporting their re-introduction in psychotherapy. She is co-editor “Psychedelic Mysteries of the Feminine”, and is developing T.R.I.P.P. network, a U.K. wide psychedelic psychotherapy integration database.

What Happened To Tobias04 Aug 201900:42:52

This post contains a discussion on suicide, psychosis, and abuse of power. It might be best to look at it at another time if you are not in the headspace to explore those topics right now.

***

As many of you heard in my intro to episode 102 with Are Thoresen, kambo facilitator and former guest on the show, Tobias [last name removed on request of the family] died on July 11, 2019.

I mentioned in that intro that the context around his death was bizarre and that I would make a statement about it. I made a video about it, this is the audio track.

More details and content here

~{TL/DR: Tobias killed himself during a psychotic episode that was most likely brought on by, primarily, the excessive (daily) use of Bufo/5-MeO-DMT. This video discusses the context that led to and surrounds his suicide and why it's relevant to us as a psychedelic culture.}~

A Psychedelic Trip To The Psych Ward | Shane Mauss ~ ATTMind 10302 Aug 201901:44:45

Comedian Shane Mauss is on the show to talk about the context that led up to his drug-induced psychosis, his time in a psychiatric institution, and why he still sees psychedelics as valuable tools for mental wellness in general, but comedy culture in particular.

Spirit Entities, Disease, and Demons | Are Thoresen ~ ATTMind 10219 Jul 201901:48:55

This episode seeks to explore the phenomenon of spiritual forces, demons, and disease. But not so much from the "are spirits real?" perspective but from the position of assuming they are real and thus an exploration of what are they and how they operate on the human being.

For this exploration, we welcome Are Thoresen, a veterinarian, acupuncturist, and scholar of anthroposophy. Are is also recognized as an expert in spirit entities and demonic possession, with a particular focus on their role in illness and healing.

(...FULL EPISODE BREAKDOWN BELOW...)

Of course, the ongoing skepticism of the "realness" of all this is present throughout this discussion as I, your host and interviewer, am not sold on the whole thing. At least not in the beginning, my heavy skepticism waning towards responsible ambivalence by the end of it all.

*** That said, I invite people to please keep their higher reasoning intact fo this interview as, real or not, getting obsessed with the presences of "demonic forces" and "battles between good an evil" can take us down dangerous roads psychologically. ***

Asking 3 Potent Questions To 8 Psychedelic Luminaries ~ ATTMind 10021 Jun 201900:59:32

To acknowledge the celebratory context of this epsiode I had done two things special with it. The first is that I took a pretty long time, in the beginning, to talk about my journey with the podcast (the actual episode starts 12:45, and the interviews at 18:00). Then, the second special thing, instead of one guest, or even two, or even three, there are EIGHT GUESTS!!!! That's right. 8 Guests.

I recorded several short, on location interviews during my travel through Europe in the summer of 2018. Most of them we shot at OZORA FESTIVAL, in Hungary. I had the amazing opportunity to be surrounded by the amazing psychedelic thinkers and researchers and I took that opportunity to ask them some questions. Three questions in fact.

THE 3 QUESTIONS

  • What do you feel is the best use of psychedelics at this time?
  • What does the psychedelic experience show us about what it means to die?
  • What is an area in psychedelic culture that is important but under-represented in the major discourse?

THE 8 GUESTS

(In alphabetical order. head to https://bit.ly/ATTMind100 for further links to their work)

  • Julian Vayne
  • Nikki Wyrd
  • Kilindi Iyi
  • Marta Kaczmarczyk
  • Meriana Dinkova
  • Moudou Baqui
  • Leor Roseman
  • Rosalind Watts

I will let them introduce themselves during the episode, and the structure of the episode be explained in the intro.

Thanks for 100 episodes!

Enjoy.

Healing Childhood Wounds With Psychedelic Therapy | Bruce Sanguin - ATTMind 9824 May 201901:33:29

This episode of the podcast narrows in on the manner in which early childhood experiences inform, often unconsciously, our adult perceptions, behavior, and self-identity. Our guest, author and former Christian minister Bruce Sanguin, takes us into and through a (common) legacy of early childhood wounds, the relational context through which they are inflicted and later reiterated, as well as the role psychedelic therapy plays in healing those childhood wounds.

Bruce is not an armchair advocate for this work, but a man that has learned from his own healing with psychedelic medicines. Along with a structural discussion on his model for healing childhood wounds and the potential of psychedelic therapy to help the process along, he shares his personal story of how his childhood wounds led him to the Church, how healing them required leaving that church behind, and how psychedelics help him learn to love again.

Ayahuasca, Colonialism, and the Death of a Healer | Kevin Tucker ~ ATTMind 9626 Apr 201902:03:46

Kevin Tucker is the author of 'The Cull Of Personality: Ayahuasca, Colonialism, and the Death of a Healer'.

He is on the show to talk to us about the history of resource extraction from the the Amazon, the devastation it wrecked on its peoples, and how he sees that history of extraction alive in the present in the form of the spiritual extractivism around ayahuasca, with the murder of Oliva Arévalo Lomas as an example.

This is a difficult episode to listen to as it contains a lot of hard to hear information such as explicit descriptions of horrendous violence, the unimaginable costs of our modern comforts, and some very divisive perspective on the global spread of ayahuasca.

Our guest for this episode of the podcast is Deb Dana, LSCW and she is on the show to tell us all about Polyvagal theory and the explanatory power it has for how and why we are the way we are in the world and with each other in  a psychological, neurobiological, sociological, but also practical way.

Polyvagal theory is easily one of the most valuable things I have learned about in my life and I am very excited to share it with you.

Don't know what Polyvagal theory is? don't worry. Deb Dana takes us in and through a working understanding of the theory while explaining how it applies to relationships, mental health and trauma, therapy, safety and danger, the neurobiology of survival, and even into contemporary American politics.

The Pan-African Use Of Psychedelic Mushrooms | Darren Spinger ~ ATTMind 9118 Jan 201901:04:37

In this (on-location) interview, Darren Springer talks about the ancient history of pan-African psychedelic use and travels forwards through time along the wings of mythology until the myths dissolve into the harsh reality of slavery, racism, and neighbourhoods infused with violence. It is grounded in this reality that Darren shares with us the potential of psychedelics (psilocybin mushrooms in particular) for the healing of historical trauma and the revitalization of black communities in the UK.

Debunking The Mushroom Santa Hypothesis | Tom Hatsis ~ ATTMind 8921 Dec 201801:29:04

According to today's guest, Tom Hatsis, Santa is not a mushroom shaman, Jesus was not a mushroom, and Christianity is not hiding a giant secret inside the biblical texts about the true hallucinogen at the root the religion being an amanita muscaria.

But, therein lies a whole different set of questions: What is the actual history of Santa Clause? Who was Jesus? What drugs were Christians actually taking? (cause they were getting HIGH and spoke openly about it). What is the real history of Christmas, the nativity, and the holy mushroom?

Swimming In The Sacred: Wisdom From The Psychedelic Underground | Rachel Harris30 Jun 202302:00:32

Rachel Harris, PhD joins us to talk about her new book, Swimming In The Sacred

Swimming in the Sacred offers a revelatory look into the past half-century of psychedelics use via in-depth interviews Harris conducted with women elders who have worked underground guiding sacred entheogenic journeys to cultivate insight, healing, and spiritual development.

Specifically, we talk about working with unseen worlds and unseen others; thin veils, absorption, and being accidentally overdosed by psychedelics; the uncanny connection between guide and journeyer during ceremony; and how psychedelic guiding work is NOT therapy and how therapy and guiding are two different skill sets.

Furthermore, we talk about the complexity of good dosing; the value of lower doses and the risks of putting larger doses on a pedestal; the strange emerging phenomenon of “competitive ego deathing”; and learning to work with life in a bigger way by learning to let our psychedelic insights work on us over time.

We talk about the risks of harm and abuse in both under- and above-ground psychedelic therapy; the difference between certification and qualification; how we lose our capacity to properly skill psychedelic guides in our rush to certify as many as possible to meet a massive demand; how to assess if a provider is trustworthy and skilled; and why psychedelic therapists NEED to experience psychedelics themselves.

YIKES! Did I accidentally host an Anti-Semite? ~ ATTMind 86:516 Nov 201800:10:30

So, I recently got an email from a listener of the show regarding a recent episode of the podcast featuring Bernhard Guenther. The emails directed me to a couple of essays off his website from 2013/14 that the listener claimed had anti-Semitic views and propagated holocaust denial and wondered if I knew about it and what I would do about it.

This video is ultimately what I did about it.

Altered States Of Entrapment | Bernhard Guenther ~ ATTMind 8609 Nov 201801:18:21

Bernhard Guenther joins us on Adventures Through The Mind to talk about the 'topic of all topics', the hyperdimensional ecology of entities that influence human life. Furthermore, he takes a deep look at the actual legitimacy of psychedelic 'healing', and its potential dangers insofar as false dawn syndrome, spiritual bypassing, and entity attachment or possession.

Despite how far out these topics may seem, I don't doubt you will find some deeply grounded and practical perspective in this interview, especially in regards to the modern ayahuasca-healing movements

We talk about why Bache chose this path, what it was like, and what here learned from it all about Consciousness, psychedelic consciousness, and what it means to be a finite human, nested in a complex web of relationships, defined by its dualist dance for meaning.

Psychedelic Feminism | Zoe Helene ~ ATTMind 8114 Sep 201801:18:51

Zoe Helene of Cosmic Sister comes on the show to talk about Psychedelic Feminism

“The ultimate goal of psychedelic feminism is to promote rapid (cultural) evolution from within—starting with women. Females make up half the human population. We know it’s way past time we stepped up and took our share of the decision-making power—and yet we haven’t. Why is that? What are the “whys?” and what can we do to work through them? My work with women and psychedelics is about exploring those complex, multifaceted, interconnected “whys?” with sacred plants and fungi, our evolutionary allies from the natural world.” – Zoe Helene

Everyone Is A Shaman | Matthew J. Pallamary ~ ATTMind 7917 Aug 201801:10:31

Everyone is a shaman.

That is a bold statement and is not without nuanced caveat and discretion. However, is is the claim of our guest for this episode of Adventures Through The Mind.

Matthew J. Pallamary is a filmmaker and a highly accomplished, multi-award-winning author of 13 books, ranging from historical novels, personal memoirs, and even a non-fiction book on the art and practice of writing itself. His work is highly psychedelic and emergence for his multi-decade experience in Shamanism practices and the psychedelic subculture, on which he extensively lectures.

He is on the show to share what he has learned from his decades participating in shamanism and shamanic practices, especially in the modern context of charlatans, appropriation, and rampant abuse of power.

From Broken to Blessed on The Bipolar Spectrum | Sara Schley ~ ATTMind 17816 Jun 202301:26:25

Today’s episode is a bit of a lateral step from psychedelics specifically as we are going to talk about bipolar with Sara Schley, the author of the highly-acclaimed memoir BrainStorm: From Broken to Blessed on the Bipolar Spectrum.

We talk about bipolar as a spectrum and the different variations of bipolar disorder; why it is that so many people with bipolar are misdiagnosed and the issues this presents to those individuals and their families; major triggers for bipolar episodes and why medication isn’t enough to keep people stable; the self-care system Schley has developed for living with a bipolar brain; and how to support your friends/family that are in a bipolar crisis.

Enjoy.

Anti-Aging, BPC-157, and Regenerating The Damaged Body | Patrick Kroupa ~ ATTMind 7803 Aug 201801:19:52

Well, this interview is not what you may assume.

It stands out in the repertoire of podcasts that have come before and are likely to go from here. That is because it isn't an interview at all, it's merely a conversation that happened off-the-cuff and just so happened to be recorded. I am releasing it because despite the diffused and tangential nature of the thing, it was fun and informative and because the guest, Patrick Kroupa is a man with much to offer, a formal interview and otherwise.

Patrick Kroupa (also known as Lord Digital, born January 20, 1969) is an American writer, hacker and activist. Kroupa was a member of the legendary Legion of Doom and Cult of the Dead Cow hacker groups and co-founded MindVox in 1991, with Bruce Fancher. He was a heroin addict from age 14 to 30 and got clean through the use of the hallucinogenic drug ibogaine. [wiki]

He is on the show this week to talk about peptides, anti-aging, and the complexities of health in the modern, toxic world.

Beyond The Tryptamine Palace | James Oroc ~ ATTMind 7720 Jul 201801:04:18

Journalist, photographer, and artist James Oroc was born in the small South Pacific nation of Aotearoa. Since 1998 he has been pursuing and reporting on the cutting edge of extreme sports in more than 40 countries around the globe, his work appearing in magazines, films, and on MTV Sports. He has been a member of the Burning Man community since 1999, and he is also involved in the documentation and advancement of psychedelic culture as one of the first people to ever publically discuss the philosophical and metaphysical implication of 5-MeO-DMT.

His first book, Tryptamine Palace, is a quintessential read for those interested in psychedelic philosophy. It presents his theories on reality, God, quantum mechanics and 5-MeO-DMT that are present in Tryptamine Palace. In this interview, we scratch the surface of those theories but advance beyond the Tryptamine Palace and explore the topics of his most recent book, The New Psychedelic Revolution -- the rich history of visionary art, modern festival culture, the rising popularity of 5-MeO-DMT, and his psychedelic philosophies on the nature of mind.

LSD and The New Science Of Brainwave Harmonics | Selen Atasoy, PhD ~ ATTMind 7606 Jul 201801:26:52

Selen Atasoy PhD and her team have developed a new model for interpreting fMRI (functional magnetic resonance imaging) data based on the mathematics of harmonic waves a phenomenon ubiquitous in nature. Essentially, they have developed a way to 'decompose' brain states in the same vein as how we can decompose a musical piece down to its individual notes. They call is connectome-harmonic decomposition and have applied this approach to the fMRI data of the brain on LSD.

The Archetypal Wounding Of Men | James Hollis PhD ~ ATTMind 7522 Jun 201801:08:52

If we want to build a better world, one that is free of the power complexes that subjugate others, it behoves us to address the root of those power complexes. In particular regards to the patriarchy, if we fail to see both the function and the origins of the patriarchy system in the psyche of man, we worsen it at best and, at worst, become power-obsessed oppressors ourselves.

The deep wounding of men by way of a toxic society is at the root of this interview with James Hollis PhD., whose ideas gave me stability in myself as I came to grapple with the pain, shame, and "quiet desperation" I have been carrying in my own life as a man.

IN UTERO: Epigenetics, Unconscious Memories, and The Womb | Stephen Gyllenhaal ~ ATTMind 7408 Jun 201801:38:07

Stephen Gyllenhaal is an award-winning film and television director, writer and producer. His producing credits include the documentary IN UTERO, "a cinematic rumination on life in the womb and its lasting impact on human development, human behaviour, and the state of the world. Tapping into cultural myths, popular movies, and technological trends, the film demonstrates how our experiences in utero – particularly traumatic events – preoccupy us throughout our lives, impacting our decisions and shaping society." [source]

Stephen takes us on a poignant exploration of the topics discussed in the film he produced with his wife Kathleen, IN UTERO. We talk about the psychological and epigenetic impact of early life and uterine environment, as well as the means by which we can unravel the negative impact of our past into profoundly positive potentials for well-being in our lives today.

Occult Magic And The Transformation Of The Self | Carl Abrahamsson ~ ATTMind 7013 Apr 201801:34:36

Magico-anthropologist and author Carl Abrahamsson is on the show to both expand and deconstruct occult magic and make it accessible to the modern world.

Of course, occult magic is a massive topic with many winding, cryptic avenues and dark alleys to traverse. The topic has much more potential than what can be explored in a seventy-five-minute conversation. So, in relevance to the themes of ATTMind we venture into the world of occult magic with a compass pointing towards a Jungian psychological approach and the potentials of magic for personal transformation and individualization. (That said, we don't shy away from the romance of all that hocus-pocus stuff, too.)

You might be surprised to discover occult magic is much more accessible than you have been led to believe.

The Science Of Brain Change: Neuroplasticity and Altered Traits | Rick Hanson Ph.D. ~ ATTMind 6930 Mar 201801:16:47

A central topic of this podcast is our capacity to change our minds.

I don't mean superficially – "Oh, actually yeah let's go see that movie instead." I mean a more fundamental change, our faculty for shifting our very sense of self and perception of the world around us. This type of change is not just an ethereal alteration of mental processes, but an actual redesigning of neural architecture. Our capacity to create such fundamental changes is due to our brain's ability to redesign its structure, lay new synaptic connections, which is called neuroplasticity.

[This episode was originally released as "The Neurobiology Of Altered Traits"]

The guest for this episode of the podcast is here to tell us how we can change our brains to change our lives and why it works. Welcome to Adventures Through The Mind, world renown neuroplasticity expert, Dr Rick Hanson.

Rick Hanson is a psychologist, Senior Fellow of the Greater Good Science Center at UC Berkeley, and New York Times best-selling author. His books are available in 26 languages and include Hardwiring Happiness, Buddha’s Brain, Just One Thing, and Mother Nurture. He’s been an invited speaker at NASA, Oxford, Stanford, Harvard, and other major universities, and taught in meditation centres worldwide. His work has been featured on the BBC, CBS, and NPR, and now he is here with us on Adventures Through The Mind.

The Great Shamanic Debate | James Kent vs. Julian Palmer ~ ATTMind 6816 Mar 201801:17:48

Have you ever experienced a psychedelic encounter with a plant spirit or an entity?

Have you ever experienced a spirit realm or being healed by a shaman? Have you ever felt as though you invoked some type of divination or noetic insight while on psychedelics? Have you ever wondered if any of that was real or just merely a hallucination?

The increasing popularity of using psychedelic substances within so-called shamanic ceremonies has introduced ideas and beliefs into the modern world that push conceptual limits of the rational mind. The rise of plant shamanism is a cultural force to be reckoned with and that which we encounter with shamanism feels urgent and real. Yet, however real the experiences with a shamanic encounter may feel, the question still remains: how real is it, really?

I asked Julian Plamer and James Kent to come on the show to debate  on this question:

"What do you believe is the fundamental nature of that which arises within a psychedelic experiences, in particular regards to what is often called The Shamanic paradigm, including the existence of a spirit realm, encounters with plant spirits or entities and the capacity to invoke healing or divination within a psychedelic experiences by way of this paradigm?"

It's a juicy one.
Enjoy

We Don't Know Sh!t | Dennis McKenna ~ ATTMind 6702 Mar 201802:01:58

Dennis Jon McKenna is an American ethnopharmacologist, research pharmacognosist, lecturer and author. He is the brother of well-known psychedelics proponent Terence McKenna and is founding board member and the director of ethnopharmacology at the Heffter Research Institute, a non-profit organization concerned with the investigation of the potential therapeutic uses of psychedelic medicines.

He is also one of the founding contributors to the modern wave of ayahuasca research in particular and psychedelic research in general. In fact, the book Magic Mushrooms grower’s guide, which he co-authored with his brother Terence in the 70s, presented the first reliable method for cultivating psilocybin mushrooms at home.

Chances are if it wasn’t for Dennis and his brother, none of us would have ever tasted the magic at all.
