Building the ADHD foundations for our life and careers13 Jul 202300:50:25

As many of us know, overworking and not prioritising our mental health can be a trait many of us relate to - this may have been a pattern your undiagnosed self fell into for many years.

We discuss this with guest, Amanda Perry, a serial entrepreneur and ADHD advocate. Following her diagnosis in 2020, she realised she had built a prison instead of a business, so she set about creating a life that worked WITH her brain instead of against it. She now helps other founders create their own version of success, balancing the value of time, energy and money.

In today's ADHD Women's Wellbeing Podcast, Kate and Amanda talked about:

  • Sadness after her ADHD diagnosis
  • ADHD overworking and overwhelm
  • Signs that your work is weighing too heavy
  • Getting clear on your values so you can create a career that includes them
  • Deciding how you want your work to make you feel
  • Amanda's own journey in business being undiagnosed ADHD
  • Creating ADHD-friendly systems to make life easier
  • Having the courage to change and pivot in business
  • Upper limiting ourselves as self-protection
  • Putting our nervous system first
  • Having autonomy over your own mental health
  • Letting our fear have its say
  • Creating an anti-hustle culture

Do you feel your nervous system is constantly heightened and dysregulated? Perhaps the feeling of hypervigilance, anxiety and not being able to settle? This is a prevalent theme I hear from many of us with ADHD - myself included.

In this week’s episode, I chat with Lisa Ryan, an experienced trauma-informed physiotherapist and somatic therapy practitioner. Lisa supports individuals (many with ADHD) who experience persistent (chronic) pain and health issues such as fibromyalgia, long COVID, chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), unexplained physical symptoms, burnout, tension headaches/migraines, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and many more. Lisa’s mission is simple - to help people find freedom from pain and troublesome symptoms, live well and thrive.

During today's episode, Lisa and I talk about:

  • ADHD masking and its impact on the nervous system
  • Creating more safety in our body
  • How to move trauma through your body
  • How our busy society and little downtime contribute to a heightened nervous system
  • Why chronic pain, CFS and fibromyalgia is connected to high levels of stress and trauma in our nervous system
  • Incorporating fun movement, nature, grounding and joy to settle and nurture the nervous system
  • Self-holding, self-soothing and using different parts of our body to calm and regulate
  • The basic needs of the nervous system and how to meet them
  • ADHD and Hypervigilance

Summer Surrendering and Healing: Solo Episode25 Jul 202400:16:10

Today, I bring you a deeply personal message through a solo episode.

As I take a break from releasing new content for a few weeks while I have some time off over the summer, this episode is an invitation to surrender and notice, without judgment, where you are right now, where you've been for the past few months, and what you're crying out for as we move towards the last few months of 2024.

In this message, I discuss whether, despite the chaotic external climate, we are able to try to slow down, remove pressure, and release some of the heavy burdens we are all carrying within us. I ask you what it is you need to calm and regulate your ADHD nervous system.

"What if I choose to let go, trust and believe that things can get better?"

I also get curious about leaning into positivity and gratitude in the morning and allowing ourselves time to disconnect and reflect on what we're feeling and desiring for the future.

ADHD and alcohol addiction...

This week’s guest is Faye Lawrence. Faye founded Untoxicated, Australia’s largest alcohol-free social community with around 10,000 members. Having been a heavy but high-functioning drinker since her teens, she wound up in inpatient detox in late 2017 after the wheels fell off. Determined not to let her sobriety ruin her social life, Untoxicated was born. Faye was recently diagnosed with ADHD (combined type) at the ripe old age of 48, and is passionate about creating awareness about the strong link between ADHD and alcohol dependence, hoping it might help reduce similar pitfalls for other women.

Faye is a TEDx speaker, co-author, has been featured widely across media and advocates to normalise living alcohol-free and reduce the stigma around addiction.

During this episode, Kate and Faye discuss:

  • ADHD and addiction connections
  • Struggling with Alcohol use
  • Family addiction patterns
  • Family compassion with the understanding of neurodiversity
  • ADHD screening in treatment centres
  • Social anxiety and drinking
  • The clarity post ADHD diagnosis
  • Why ADHD can make you more susceptible to addiction
  • Socialising post recovery
  • How Faye is finding ADHD medication
  • How to look at your own drinking habits

My ADHD insights on prioritising time out, rest and our hormones for better mental wellbeing02 May 202300:24:22

Welcome back to a new series of The ADHD Women's Wellbeing Podcast.

In this intro solo episode before the official start of the series on Thursday, I wanted to share my insights from taking some time out.

With ADHD, we can find it difficult to stop, slow down, pause, rest and breathe.

Very often, we only stop when an external factor stops us. Maybe that’s an injury, illness, ill family member, work crisis or even a pandemic!

Our ADHD nervous system has been fine-tuned to keep running on high alert, despite feeling fraught and exhausted most of the time.

But with awareness of ADHD comes power. Power to prevent. Power to see what we haven’t been able to understand before. Burnout cycles we thought were because we couldn’t keep up. Always more to do, be, produce, create and show. Never enough. Never on top of things. I must keep doing more. And then what? We break down, we collapse and we burn out and we’re no good to anyone. And then the cycle of shame happens.

I took a break and for the first time, I didn’t feel guilty. I knew I deserved this break. I was worthy of relaxing and restoring. I knew that this was in the best interest of everyone around me, including my clients, family and friends. It was needed and it was wonderful. I felt rejuvenated and re-energised—no guilt or fear of judgement.

In this solo episode (guest episode returning on Thursday) I talk about how to find a break if you can’t escape for a few days. I call them micro pauses that we can all do and become more intentional about every day. I am actively retraining myself to find more time to breathe, pause and recalibrate every day so I can show up for my family and my work - both of which are hugely important to me. Not only this, but also for my mental health, mood regulation, anxiety, nervous system and physical health (my back). I’m finally ready to prioritise this and invite you to do the same.

I also talk about ADHD, women's health and hormones and will be talking about this more in the next few months. Watch this space for a new project that I'm working on.

Activating the cerebellum to increase our mental capacity23 Mar 202300:47:18

Did you know that we can create new neural pathways using neuroplasticity by activating a part of the brain called the cerebellum? By enhancing this part of our brain - over the pre-frontal cortex - we can ease and lessen our ADHD symptoms and create a more effortless daily life.

This week's guest is Wynford Dore, an entrepreneur on a mission to change the lives of one million children. Wynford is the founder of Zing Brain Development programmes, the owner of Arnold Lodge School and also formed Educational Development International plc.

For the last 20 years Wynford has focused on changing the world, one brain at a time. He's funded many research projects and now works with the leading academics to determine the best solutions that successfully accelerate and develop learning in the brain - which finds our hidden potential and increases mental capacity…. including creating greater, stronger emotional regulation.

During today's conversation, Kate and Wynford talked about:

  • Wynford's personal story about his daughter
  • What is the cerebellum and why is it so important to neurodivergence
  • How can we stimulate and activate the cerebellum
  • Stepping out of our thinking brain, the pre-frontal cortex and executive thinking and using the cerebellum more
  • Creating new neural pathways and plasticity to enhance the cerebellum
  • Wynford's Zing programme to help people activate their cerebellum
  • Activities and ways to help activate the cerebellum

You can find Wynford on Instagram at @zingperformance and access his FREE anxiety resources here or take the ADHD assessment here.

During this episode, Kate and Mita spoke about:

  • The psychical reactions to social anxiety
  • How social anxiety manifests with ADHD
  • How to overcome social anxiety by breaking down the thoughts behind it
  • Using CBT to help anxiety

Today's compilation episode focuses on the challenges and practical solutions to help manage our ADHD emotional dysregulation. These mini excerpts from some of my favourite episodes, focussing on our ADHD big emotions, will hopefully serve as a reminder as we move into another year, this time with more awareness. I hope this episode also nudges you to bring more forgiveness and mindfulness to your daily life in order to calm your nervous system, build your resilience and feel more present.

The clips include:

Lidia Zylowska  - talking about mindfulness, self-regulation and compassionate communication. Reducing reactivity, how to start a difficult conversation. Being non-judgmental in a conflict.

Merriam Saunders - talking about curating a morning routine, reacting to our kids, modelling to your children how to emotionally regulate, noticing the feelings in our body, and balancing our nervous system.

Tamara Rosier - talking about understanding how to access our 'emotional butler' to calm down. Reaching for more acceptance and recognition of emotional dysregulation with ADHD. Taking time to make energetic buffers and check back in to ensure we're not in a constant frenzy.

Melissa Orlov -talking about how RSD shows up in our daily life, being aware of our intense emotional regulation and sending ourselves compassion to help our relationships. Breaking generational patterns and using more awareness to break cycles. Reward-focussed brain feeling pain easily. Emotional management and quick rage ramp-up tips.

Marcy Caldwell - talking about being derailed by our emotions. Emotional check-ins, small daily tools to help ourselves. How to ease the overwhelm and emotional dysregulation and reactivity - buffer to shed the overstimulation.

Seeking Calmer Days Ahead15 Dec 202200:27:43

In today's solo episode, you'll hear an exert from my new Calmer Days private podcast so you can get a feel for what I share with you in this new series.

Emotional Regulation is an element of ADHD that many of us with ADHD struggle to manage. Learning new ways to self-regulate and ground ourselves when life feels overwhelming and overstimulating can be one of the most powerful ways of helping our ADHD brains.

In this solo episode, I explain why I've chosen to focus on emotional regulation and the importance of empowering ourselves with new tools to help strengthen our emotional resilience and resources.

Supporting ADHD Parents to Help Both Ourselves AND Our Children18 Jul 202400:51:18

Navigating the ADHD diagnostic pathways while being neurodivergent is not easy. It can be incredibly challenging when we're also doing this to support and advocate for our children. Understanding our stories and beliefs about how ADHD has shown up for ourselves allows us to recognise the power of advocating for new stories to show up for the next generation.

This week's guest, Dr Tom Nicholson, lectures at Northumbria University and is a Neurodiversity and mental Health Specialist who has delivered hundreds of speaking events and guest lectures on ADHD, Mental Health, Neurodiversity, and Neuroinclusion.

On this episode of the ADHD Women's Wellbeing Podcast, Kate and Dr Tom Nicholson speak about:

  • The Stories we are told as we grow up that have become beliefs
  • Tom's support from his mother's advocacy
  • Tom's experience in education and the attitudes toward ADHD in the 90s
  • The different archetypes of ADHD mothers
  • Needing more awareness and advocating and less overhyped celebration of ADHD
  • Empowering Parents with the best way to help their ADHD children
  • The positive power of teaching
  • How to interact with the educational system with ADHD
  • Being High-achieving and being 2E alongside ADHD and Autism
  • Burnout alongside neurodivergence
  • Navigating a neurodivergence diagnosis within the healthcare system

Using our ADHD diagnosis as a force for social and medical reform17 Nov 202200:51:23

Undiagnosed ADHD, at best, can be a life-long nuisance and energy-sapper, but at worst, it can trigger the worst of mental health issues, including suicide ideation.

Unfortunately, this week's guest, Priyanka Patel, a pharmacist based in Manchester and who was recently diagnosed with ADHD at 27, knows this all too well.

She was diagnosed with depression in 2020 and, despite her efforts to try and get an ADHD assessment, was not listened to by her GP. Priyanka was then put on a variety of medications which led to a significant decline in her mental health.

Since finally getting her ADHD diagnosis, Priyanka's life has transformed, and now she is on a mission to ensure no other woman has to go through what she did.

During this week's episode, Kate and Priyanka talk about:

  • Priyanka's mental health and diagnosis story
  • How Priyanka's family dealt with her diagnosis
  • Focussing on all our negatives instead of our strengths
  • The stigma of mental health, ADHD and medication in Indian culture
  • How to approach medication for your situation
  • Cultural views of neurodiversity
  • How ADHD Medication works in your system
  • Tips to help feel better while taking medication
  • Subtle ways our ADHD symptoms creep up
  • Accommodations we can choose to help ourselves
  • Priyanka's work to improve NHS GPs' knowledge of ADHD symptoms in women
  • Increasing awareness and screening of ADHD in GPs

Making life work for you after an ADHD diagnosis03 Nov 202200:47:48

"Don't try to fit into the world; make the world fit into you."

This week’s guest is Sarah Templeton, author of the hit book ‘How NOT to Murder Your ADHD Kid – Instead Learn to be Your Child’s Own ADHD Coach’ released in 2021. She realised the key to stopping ADHD adolescents from becoming homeless, unemployed, on drugs and in prison was to educate the parents.  If parents could recognise their kids getting into these sorts of issues very early on and change their child’s life path by pursuing an early diagnosis, medication and managing their ADHD properly from the start, the result would mean the prisons, homeless hostels and rehabs would NOT be packed to the rafters with ADHD.

Sarah is a vocal advocate for change and believes The ADHD Act is long overdue. She is on the APPG for ADHD at the Houses of Parliament and has vowed to be the voice for the tens of thousands of young offenders and adult offenders with undiagnosed ADHD – who cannot get their voices heard within the prison system. Yet without the correct ADHD diagnosis and medication, their life is destined to be one spent persistently in and out of prison.

During this episode, Kate and Sarah speak about:

  • ADHD within the prison system
  • Harnessing ADHD to re-focus your life
  • Why you may not recognize your amazing skills and abilities with ADHD
  • Women coping with an ADHD diagnosis
  • The relief after getting a diagnosis
  • The price of ignoring our ADHD
  • Criticism and the impact that has on us historically
  • Leaning into our strengths and listening to the positives
  • Making the world work for you
  • The pressure on un-diagnosed ADHD women to cope
  • Using your dopamine-seeking ADHD brain for good
  • Sarah's plans for the ADHD Act in the prison system and police

Reprogramming our mindset to enjoy a more rewarding life20 Oct 202200:50:11

ADHD can bring many opposing challenges and connotations and can feel like heavy energy to deal with. Yet through gentle curiosity, we can find new options to reprogram our thinking and switch our emotional energy to create a happier, calmer and more fulfilling family life.

Despite the challenges, we can focus on the things that we're proud of and which lift us. We can create more internal strength and greatness as parents - life can be easier than we believe.

This week’s guest is a mum of six and special education teacher and college lecturer, Avigail Gimpel. Avigail has taught children of all ages in New York, Jerusalem, and Moscow and now teaches at Hertzog Teachers College.  Avigail also supports adults with ADHD in identifying the root causes of their symptoms and shares the tools you need to journey joyfully toward your goals. Her new book, Hyper Healing, Show me the Science: Making sense of your Child's ADHD Diagnosis, is out today.

During today's episode, Kate and Avigail speak about:

  • Self-belief, getting unstuck and reinforcing old stories
  • Creating new habits
  • Positive messaging for both ADHD children and adults
  • Epigenetics, trauma and how that impacts our ADHD
  • How instant gratification personality plays into ADHD
  • Lesser known explanations neurological explanations for what is and isn't ADHD
  • Why brain scans don't always work for the ADHD brain
  • Self-empowering ourselves and our kids to help them thrive with ADHD
  • The effect of negative messaging in childhood and the power of a compliment
  • Breaking generational cycles and habits and then forgiving ourselves for being human

ADHD diagnoses in midlife - joining the dots and finally getting answers09 Oct 202200:39:40

Has it taken you until midlife to finally understand who you are and what your brain is about? The increased awareness of ADHD in women, especially later in life, has finally given women the answers to life-long questions and allowed for the self-acceptance and compassion they've searched for all their lives.

This week’s bonus episode is with Katie Taylor, founder and CEO of The Latte Lounge, an online platform helping women in midlife thrive at home and in the workplace.

Katie created The Latte Lounge in 2016 after suffering for four years from misdiagnosed symptoms of perimenopause. Her community now supports more than 50,000 women with evidence-based information about women’s health, backed by a medical advisory team. It is a confidential space for midlife women to connect online and gain access and signposting to various health and wellbeing experts.

During this episode, Kate and Katie talk about:

  • Katie's perimenopause story and diagnosis
  • Empowering women with more menopause awareness
  • ADHD and menopause
  • How ADHD can show up during menopause - and how to decipher between the two
  • Binge eating, imposter syndrome, burnout and trauma alongside ADHD
  • How ADHD traits/symptoms showed up during Katie's life
  • Starting to recognise the signs of ADHD in midlife
  • Katie's Midlife Festival
