Episode 91: Why Your ADHD Child Baits Their Sibling (and Why Telling Them to Stop Never Works)28 sept. 202600:18:44

***Join Managing Sibling Conflict & ADHD Session***

Why does one child seem to know exactly how to push their sibling’s buttons, then keep going until the whole house explodes?

Sibling baiting is incredibly common in ADHD families. It can look small from the outside. Standing too close to a prized possession. Making a particular noise. Saying the one thing they know will get a reaction. But underneath that behaviour, there can be much more going on.

In this episode, Credentialed ADHD family Coach Sharon Collon is joined by registered Psychologist Jacquie Ward to unpack why ADHD sibling conflict can escalate so quickly and why focusing on who started it often makes things worse.

They explore boredom and low-arousal states, rejection sensitivity, fairness, emotional regulation and the role parents can unintentionally play when they step in as the referee.

Because when the same fights happen again and again, the answer is not another lecture about being nice to each other. It is understanding the predictable pattern and knowing what to do when it starts.

👀 In This Episode, Sharon Covers

✅ What sibling baiting and “rage baiting” actually look like

✅ Why an ADHD brain may seek stimulation by provoking a sibling

✅ How boredom and low-arousal states can contribute to conflict

✅ Why rejection sensitivity can turn a small interaction into a huge emotional reaction

✅ How asking “Who started it?” can intensify the conflict

✅ Why ADHD children’s strong sense of fairness can make arguments harder to resolve

✅ The difference between being the family referee and becoming the competent captain

✅ Why being steady is often more useful than trying to make everything fair

✅ How to recognise the predictable patterns behind recurring sibling fights

✅ Why having scripts ready matters when you are dysregulated too

The Real Problem With Sibling Conflict The hardest part is often not the argument itself.

It is feeling like you are dealing with the same fight on repeat.

One child baits.
The other reacts.
Someone explodes.
You step in and try to establish what happened.
Everyone argues about what is fair.
You become dysregulated too.

Then, the next day, it happens all over again.

In the heat of the moment, it can be incredibly difficult to remember the parenting strategy you intended to use. You might start gently, become stricter, raise your voice, separate everyone and then wonder afterwards what you could have done differently.

Sharon and Jacquie explain why the goal is not a home where siblings never fight.

The goal is to understand the pattern, know how to interrupt it and have a clear playbook for what to do next.

Episode 90: You've Read Everything About ADHD. Nothing's Sticking.31 août 202600:26:36

***Join the ADHD Family Quest***

How many tabs about ADHD do you have open right now?

On your phone, on your laptop. The one about dopamine. The one about demand avoidance. The routine chart someone swore by at 11pm.

You are not short on information about ADHD. You could probably explain executive function better than your GP can. And your Tuesday morning at 7:40am still falls apart.

That gap between everything you know and what actually happens in your house is not a knowledge problem. In this episode, Sharon Collon breaks down the two traps almost every ADHD family gets stuck in: knowledge farming, where you collect information you cannot implement, and system farming, where you buy the visual schedule, the magnetic chore chart and the beautiful Etsy printable, and it dies within a fortnight anyway.

She tells the story of two families who photographed the washing chart in her laundry, and why she already knew standing there that it would not work in their houses. Then she gives you the one shift that changes how you build anything at home from here: build the system for your worst day, not your best one.

👀 In This Episode, Sharon Covers:
  • Why you can know everything about ADHD and still not be able to run a Tuesday morning
  • Knowledge farming, and why information gives you the what but almost never the how
  • System farming, and why the chart you set up on Sunday is dead by the second week
  • What parents wrongly conclude about themselves when a routine falls over
  • Why a bought or copied system arrives with no household attached to it
  • The hidden 95% of decisions underneath any system that actually works
  • Why every household has its own physics, and why that breaks borrowed routines
  • The one shift: designing for a low capacity day instead of your most optimistic one
  • Why getting started, stopping something enjoyable and holding a three step instruction are all skills
  • How missing skills get mistaken for defiance, laziness and a child who does not care
  • Kate’s story: how a Sunday that ran like a military operation became three steps done before lunch
  • Why “get ready for the week” is a category, not a job, and why that causes paralysis
  • Why one bad Sunday no longer takes Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday down with it
  • Why it is called The Functional Family, and what Sharon is actually building towards

🧭 The Three Questions to Run This Week

Pick one thing you have been trying to make stick. Not all of them. One.

  1. Does this work if I am not in the room? If it never will, what you have is not a system. It is a performance that needs you as the lead actor, and your child has not learned anything, because the thing doing the work is you.
  2. Does this still work on a bad day? If it needs everyone calm, regulated and cooperative to function, it is not a system. It is a good mood.
  3. What skill is actually missing for my child here? Name the missing skill and two things change. You stop taking it personally, and you stop building systems that punish a child for something they cannot do yet.

The biggest takeaway?

The system is not there to make a child comply. It is there to do the job your child’s brain cannot do yet, so they can practise the rest without failing every single day while they learn.

Episode 89: Why Reward Charts Stop Working for Children With ADHD24 août 202600:17:30

Week one, the reward chart is magic.

Your child is racing to the fridge for their gold star. The school bag is actually being put away. Nobody is nagging. Nobody is arguing. And you think, finally, THIS is the thing that is going to change our family.

Then week two arrives.

The magnets are missing. The stickers are on the floor. Nobody cares about the chart anymore and another beautifully laminated parenting system gets shoved into the kitchen drawer where hope goes to die.

So, why do reward charts seem to work brilliantly for children with ADHD, until suddenly they don’t?

In this episode, Sharon explains why reward charts often clash with the way the ADHD brain experiences motivation, novelty and time, and why the answer isn't becoming more consistent, finding a bigger reward or buying an even fancier chart.

You'll also learn what works instead: designing simple systems and environments that make the behaviour you want the easiest, most obvious next step.

👀 In This Episode, Sharon Covers:
  • Why reward charts work brilliantly at first, then suddenly stop
  • How novelty drives motivation for the ADHD brain
  • Why delayed rewards often lose their motivational pull
  • Sharon's rule: "The ADHD brain pays in cash, not credit"
  • Why this isn't about laziness, willpower or parental consistency
  • The gap between knowing what to do and being able to do it
  • Why changing the environment can work better than adding another reward
  • How to make the behaviour you want easier and more obvious
  • Where rewards can still be useful for children with ADHD
  • How to start with one small friction point in your family

Episode 88: Angel at School, Falling Apart at Home: After-School Meltdowns Explained17 août 202600:12:59

They held it together all day.

The teacher says they were fine. Maybe they even had a great day.

Then they walk through the front door and within 10 minutes, everything falls apart. The bag gets thrown. There are tears over the wrong snack. A sibling looks at them the wrong way. Something tiny turns into a full meltdown that wipes out the entire evening.

So why does your child with ADHD manage all day at school — then completely unravel at home?

In this episode, Sharon explains after-school restraint collapse and why home is often the place where children finally release everything they’ve been holding together all day.

You’ll also learn why the first 30 minutes after school need their own system, what to do when your child is already dysregulated, and why planning for siblings, snacks, sensory input and your own capacity can completely change the afternoon.

👀 In This Episode, Sharon Covers:
  • Why ADHD children can hold it together at school and fall apart at home

  • What after-school restraint collapse actually is

  • The signs that “bad behaviour” may actually be dysregulation

  • Why the ADHD brain can arrive home completely out of fuel

  • How medication rebound may affect the after-school window

  • Why reasoning, consequences and explanations don’t work mid-meltdown

  • What to do instead when your child is emotionally flooded

  • Why the first 30 minutes after school matter so much

  • How to create an automatic decompression space

  • Why the first 20 minutes should be a low-demand window

  • How your first greeting can either lower or increase demand

  • Why siblings need their own after-school plan

  • How to design the 3–5pm window for the whole family, not just the child with ADHD

  • When worsening after-school meltdowns may be a sign that something else has shifted

The biggest takeaway?

After-school collapse isn’t random. It’s predictable. And predictable problems can be planned for.

Episode 87: ADHD and Big Emotions: Why the Smallest Thing Sets Them Off10 août 202600:13:31

The toast was cut the wrong way.

That’s all it took.

Suddenly there are tears, slammed doors and an emotional reaction so huge you’re standing there wondering, how is THIS the hill we’re dying on today?

If your child with ADHD can go from zero to completely overwhelmed over something that seems tiny, this episode will help you understand why.

Sharon breaks down what’s really happening underneath ADHD emotional dysregulation, meltdowns and big emotional reactions and why the size of the reaction often has very little to do with the size of the trigger.

You’ll also learn why reasoning with your child in the middle of an emotional storm rarely works, what Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria (RSD) can look like in everyday family life, and what to do instead.

👀 In This Episode, Sharon Covers:
  • Why small triggers can create enormous ADHD emotional reactions

  • How executive function affects emotional regulation

  • Why the “wrong toast” is rarely actually about the toast

  • What RSD is and why ordinary corrections can feel enormous

  • Why your child may hold it together all day and fall apart with you

  • Why explaining, reasoning and consequences don’t work mid-meltdown

  • How co-regulation helps your child come back online

  • Five practical things Sharon does during big emotions

  • Why the real teaching happens after the storm

The biggest takeaway?

Your calm is the tool. Everything else gets built on top of it.

Why does your child melt down at exactly 7:15am, 3:15pm and 8:45pm, like clockwork?

Episode 83: Why Kids with ADHD Swear (And What to Actually Do About It)18 juin 202600:25:56

Has your child ever dropped the F-bomb at exactly the worst possible moment? Maybe it was at a family dinner, in the school pickup line, or right in front of Grandma. If so, you're definitely not alone.

In this episode of the ADHD Families Podcast, Sharon Collon, PCC Credentialed ADHD Family Coach, unpacks one of the most common challenges parents bring to coaching sessions: swearing. You'll learn why traditional punishment approaches often fail, how to reduce the emotional charge around swear words, and practical strategies that help children develop better self-regulation and communication skills. Episode 78: Why Friendship Feels Hard When You Have ADHD20 avr. 202600:45:26

Every week in my support group, parents share the same quiet ache — they wish they had people in their lives who actually got them. They feel lonely. And they're often so busy supporting their child's social struggles that their own go unspoken.

This episode is for you. The parent. The adult.

👦🏼 Also Worth Reading — From Xavier

This episode talks about the adult experience of friendship and ADHD. But what about our kids?

My son Xavier — who has ADHD — wrote a blog that has stopped parents in their tracks since the day it was published. It is called A Note from a Kid with ADHD: How to Be My Friend.

In Xavier's own words, he shares what he needs from friends — the patience, the inclusion, the kindness, and the grace. It is the resource I wished she could hand to other families when Xavier was young.

Share it with another parent, a teacher, or a child who could use the reminder.

Episode 76: How Do I Support Big Emotions in My Child With ADHD Without Losing It?28 mars 202600:11:31

Does your child go from 0 to 100 in seconds and you're left wondering what just happened?

If you're parenting a child with ADHD, you already know that big emotions don't just happen, they explode. And no matter how calm you try to stay, it pulls you in every single time.

In this episode of the  ADHD Families Podcast, Sharon Collon, ADHD family coach and founder of The Functional Family, unpacks why emotional meltdowns in children with ADHD aren't behaviour problems — they're nervous system responses. Sharon explains why emotional regulation is an executive function skill that develops later in ADHD brains, what's really sitting underneath those explosive reactions, and why discipline and reasoning make dysregulation worse. If you've ever felt like you're walking on eggshells around your child's emotions, Sharon shares a simple 3-step strategy — Name, Validate, Regulate — that you can use in the moment, even when you're exhausted.

---------------------------

KEY POINTS
  • ADHD and the “3Ds” are deeply connected.
Around 30–40% of kids with ADHD also live with dyslexia, dysgraphia, or dyscalculia, making learning challenges much more common than many parents realize .

  • The struggles go beyond academics.
Difficulties with reading, writing, and maths can cause embarrassment, low confidence, and a negative self-image in kids—sometimes lasting well into adulthood .

  • Early expert support is key.
Parents don’t need to have all the answers right away. Reaching out to specialist tutors, educational psychologists, or organisations like Speld can provide clarity and practical next steps .

  • Common myths are harmful.
Many people—including teachers—still wrongly believe that conditions like dyslexia or dysgraphia don’t exist, or that kids “just need to try harder.” These misconceptions can damage children’s self-esteem .

  • Compassion and de-escalation help at home.
Reducing homework loads, allowing breaks, and using supportive tech tools (like voice-to-text or read-aloud features) can relieve pressure and make learning more manageable

Ever feel like you need to clone yourself just to get through the week? Trust me, you’re not alone! If your to-do list is longer than your arm and you’re running on coffee and hope, I’ve got something that will make you feel seen (and maybe even make you laugh).

In this episode, I spill all my best-kept secrets for buying back your time, reducing stress, and creating a home that actually works for your beautiful, busy family. From clever outsourcing hacks (think: veggie-chopping superheroes and laundry angels) to the art of saying “no” without the guilt, this episode is packed with practical, strength-based strategies you can use right now.

What you’ll learn:

  • Rapid-fire ideas for what to outsource (and what to let go of)
  • Real-life scripts for saying “no” (without feeling like the bad guy)
  • Tips for using tech and community to lighten your load
  • A big permission slip to ditch the martyrdom and invest in your family’s wellbeing

45:55 Outsourcing for Family Well-being

50:04 Outsource and Barter for Efficiency

------------------

The Art of Saying “No” (Without the Guilt)
  • Don’t fill your freed-up time with more obligations!

  • Use Sharon’s go-to script: “Thank you for the offer, I’ll get back to you.” Then set a reminder and check if it actually fits your values and schedule.

  • Remember: Future you is just as busy as present you. Don’t overcommit on the hope that “it’ll calm down soon.”

Key Takeaways
  • Outsourcing is an investment in your family’s wellbeing—not a failure.

  • Start with your biggest pain point. Just pick one thing to try outsourcing and see how much lighter life feels.

  • Use tech and community to your advantage—reminders apps, shared notes, and even AI can help you manage admin and subscriptions.

  • Barter with friends! Swap the jobs you hate for the ones you love.

Remember, you don’t have to do it all. Sometimes the bravest thing you can do is ask for help (or outsource the washing!).

This week’s challenge:
Pick just one task that drains your energy or always gets pushed to the bottom of your to-do list—and outsource it.

  • It could be as simple as hiring someone to fold your laundry, getting your groceries delivered, or asking a friend to swap chores with you.

  • Don’t overthink it! Choose the task you dread most or the one that would buy you the most breathing room.

  • Try it once—just as an experiment. Notice how it feels to have that space back in your day.

Bonus points: Share your outsourcing win (or fail!) in the ADHD Families Facebook group to inspire and support other families.

Episode 61: 3 Game-Changing Skills Every Parent of Children With ADHD Needs08 juin 202500:10:37

Are you constantly walking on eggshells around your child with ADHD? Feeling like you’re failing as a parent or just plain exhausted from the daily battles? You’re not alone—and there’s hope! In this episode, Sharon Collon shares the three simple but powerful skills that can transform your family dynamic and help you move from reactive to responsive parenting.

Sharon, award-winning ADHD coach and founder of The Functional Family, introduces her signature CRC method—Curious, Regulated, and Clear. With over 17 years supporting families and her own lived experience, she knows traditional parenting advice often misses the mark for children with ADHD. Instead, Sharon’s CRC approach is practical, research-backed, and designed to work with your child’s brain, not against it.

What You’ll Learn
  • Why most parenting strategies fail families with ADHD—and what to do instead

  • The CRC Method:

    • Curious: Shift from frustration to curiosity. See your child’s behaviour as communication, not defiance. Ask, “I wonder what’s going on for them in this moment?” to get to the root of tricky behaviours.

    • Regulated: Manage your own emotional state first. Dysregulation is contagious! Learn simple ways to slow things down, model calm, and help your child regulate by leading by example.

    • Clear: Give specific, achievable instructions. Ditch the vague “be good” and go for concise, one-step directions your child can actually follow. Less is more—sometimes just two words and a kind face do the trick.

⏰ Timestamps ⏰

00:00 Transformative ADHD Parenting Skills

03:47 Curiosity Over Judgment

09:23 Concise Instructions Essential

10:42 ADHD Parenting: Key Skills Overview

------------------------------------------------------

Sharon’s Top Tips
  • Don’t stack instructions—one thing at a time!

  • Practice saying your instruction in your head before you say it out loud to keep it short and clear.

  • Remember: Your child’s dysregulation isn’t about you—it’s about their developing brain.

  • The CRC method isn’t just theory; it’s a game-changer for daily life.

Through the years of experience working as a teacher and becoming a parent to four, Dominique began to see a common thread in children. A common battle between behaviour and emotions. Parents would often ask for advice when trying to understand why their children behaved a certain way in a stressful situation.

When learning to navigate her own parenting style she realised yelling, arguing and demanding children to behave a certain way was toxic for small children in learning to understand how to respond to big emotions. Our job as parents is to teach our children to became adults that are able to recognise and manage these feelings and know it is normal to struggle to regulate our emotions.

Especially with three boys full of testosterone, she began to identify the different personas children use to respond to stressful situations. This was how the concept behind the picture book series was developed. A way to show children, through a story, that these feelings are normal. It is how we learn to deal with them that changes how feel about ourselves and others.

Dave's journey in working with children began serendipitously over 30 years ago when, at the age of 14, his mother offered him $20 to volunteer for a day at a vacation care program with Bernardo's. While he humorously questions whether it was truly "volunteering," given the modest payment below minimum wage, it marked the beginning of a passionate career. Since that day, Dave has devoted his life to nurturing relationships and forming meaningful connections with both kids and their families, a cornerstone of his philosophy. His work as an occupational therapist allows him to engage with clients on a personal level, focusing on enhancing their daily lives. Driven by the belief that connection is vital in everything we do, Dave continues to leave a lasting impact on those he serves.

  KEY POINTS

What are common misconceptions parents have about managing behaviour in children?

A common misconception is that managing behaviour requires discipline in the form of compliance.

The misconception about managing behaviour in children with ADHD

  • Misconception: Managing behaviour in children, particularly those with ADHD, requires a strict discipline approach focused on compliance — getting the child to do what you want through external control methods.
  • Reality: Flipping the script from compliance-based discipline to fostering behaviour developing an internal compass in children.

  • Consequence of Misconception: When parents focus solely on compliance and external control, they might achieve short-term goals but at the cost of not equipping children with the skills they need for long-term success.

  • Alternative Approach: Understanding the root causes of behavior by looking beyond the surface.

KEY POINTS

What Are Habits?
Habits are behaviours that through repetition become automatic actions we take without thinking. As James Clear explains in "Atomic Habits," habits help us solve life's problems with minimal effort.

The Habit Loop for ADHD

  • Cue: The prompt that triggers the action

  • Routine: The actual action or behaviour

  • Reward: The feeling or benefit received after completing the action

Essential Habits for ADHD Management

  • Hydration: Place cups on the kitchen bench each morning to make drinking water obvious and easy

  • Nutrition: Remove artificial colours and additives, increase protein intake

  • Exercise: Daily movement (like using a mini trampoline) to help brain function

  • Sleep: Establishing consistent routines for better rest

Making Habits Stick with ADHD

  • Start with very small steps (30 seconds or less to complete)

  • Make the habit obvious and easy to perform

  • Track progress with visual reminders

  • Include habits they already know how to do to build confidence

  • Provide immediate rewards (not delayed gratification)
