Episode 49: ADHD, 'Adulting', Motherhood & Chaos with Stacey Heale
04 Apr 2023
01:05:15
Writer and TedX Speaker Stacey Heale shares 'honest conversations on how to rebuild your life after hard times’… and we are so grateful to this legendary lady for her honesty and insights in this wonderful conversation.
At 43, Stacey is freshly diagnosed with ADHD. The Mother of two, and jack of all trades is just as chaotic as we are! Part of our ADHDAF mission is to eradicate the shame around the symptoms and struggles we battle daily and to celebrate the messy ‘too-muchness’ and rebellion so many of us relate to. Which is why we ADORE this blether and this woman so much! We are no strangers to the shame of our ineptitude at 'adulting' adequately, and alongside experiencing this; Stacey gives us her perspective of Motherhood with the neurodevelopmental condition. How it feels when the chaos is no longer just your own, as it also affects your children. ADHD Medication and self compassion post diagnosis has improved Stacey's life enormously. THANK YOU SO MUCH STACEY, we can't wait to read your book!

Episode 48: ADHD, Mental Health & Sacrifices with Cat Owens
28 Mar 2023
00:52:39
This is a VERY IMPORTANT and emotional episode in which we learn the extent of the sacrifices faced by Disability Campaigner Cat Owens due to undiagnosed ADHD. Though yet to be confirmed, it is suspected that Cat has been on the wrong medication for SEVENTEEN YEARS -at great cost!
Cat's story helps us understand the drive for ADHD Activism. NOTHING ABOUT US WITHOUT US! We are all in this together. In demystifying the politics surrounding ADHD, we uncover further unexplained mysteries from the Parliamentary Debate... WHERE ARE THE MISSING NUMBERS?!
This is a call to action: PLEASE download Rachel Charlton-Dailey's template letter: Tell IPSO to change the discrimination clause NOW! We've intentionally left it to the last minute as it's when we both spring into action - MAKE CHANGE HAPPEN HERE!

Episode 47: ADHD, Self Diagnosis & Dopamine Dressing with L.O.M.
21 Mar 2023
01:11:34
SELF DIAGNOSIS IS VALID. What's more, it is ESSENTIAL amidst the current ADHD Diagnosis crisis! Our guest Louise O'Mahony's experience is a perfect example of why.
Berlin and Brighton based Fashion Designer Louise is yet to receive an ADHD diagnosis. An admin error sent her to the back of a very long queue she thought she'd already been on for months! Whilst awaiting assessment, Louise has found conversations with other ADHDers, online information and podcasts like ours invaluable in supporting herself through this period of diagnosis and treatment limbo. Our podcast was secretly listened to by Louise's boyfriend to gain insight into what she might be experiencing to support her... THERE ARE NO WORDS FOR HOW MUCH WE LOVE THAT!
Louise is literally QUEEN of Dopamine Dressing! You'd be hard pushed to find a festival field without many fashionistas frolicking in her famous L.O.M. designs!
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING YOUR STORY WITH US LOUISE! We hope to blether with this legendary lady again post diagnosis.

It’s Neurodiversity Celebration Week and we have got the perfect blether for the occasion! The wonderful Priyanka Patel AKA @littlemiss_adhd_ hops aboard the late ADHD diagnosis roller coaster with us and alongside sharing her experience she also highlights how following our passions leads ADHDers to thrive. Her positivity is inspiring and this chinwag has helped reframe Laura’s perception of her achievements.
‘Quite often the focus is on the challenges rather than the many strengths and talents of neurodivergent individuals, ever neurodivergent individual has a unique pattern of strengths and challenges. It is important to harness the strengths and talents of neurodivergent individuals, this helps to build confidence and self-esteem, and ensures individuals are given the opportunity to flourish in their day-to-day’ - @neurodiversityweek

Episode 43: ADHD, Fatherhood & Self Care with Jacob Kelly
21 Feb 2023
01:08:57
You'll likely know Bristol's finest as @adhdfatheruk. The self proclaimed 'old hag of the ADHD online community', was diagnosed 20 years ago. Jacob created his platform to highlight, educate and inspire people about ADHD, as well as spotlighting positive ADHD figures and the power of ADHD representation.
Jacob very kindly invited us on an Insta LIVE interview back in December and we hit it off right away. We LOVE talking to this legend; so much so that we were recording this for over two hours and we could've blethered on longer!
Despite not being a newbie to the ADHD Diagnosis Rollercoaster, Jacob didn't start learning about ADHD and connecting with other ADHDers for many years. It's this, and prioritising self care that has taken him from surviving to thriving! We are taking his advice and hope you do too.
We're so grateful to Jacob for reaching out to us, and for volunteering his voice on the Podcast... and are SO EXCITED to have him join us for our Bristol Tour Date! Grab yourself a ticket HERE and tickets for our other dates HERE.
The working title of this episode was 'Jacob and his coat of many Adeles' in reference to his unique self care rituals. LOLS! We hope you enjoy this blether as much as we did and make moments of joy your priority! THANK YOU SO MUCH JACOB!

With ep. 42's release date falling on Valentine's Day, we decided to explore the date dedicated to romantic love through an ADHD lens, from our own perspectives, and share findings from far more reputable resources.
Valentine's Day ain't all roses, is it?! Whether you're single or attached; marrying societal pressures and ADHD can make for one hell of a toxic relationship! Speaking of which, if you haven't already heard our deep dive into ADHD and 'Romantic' Relationships, have a listen to Episode 8.
In this blether we explore the growth that ADHD identification has brought. Our Dawny is no longer desperate to be liked on dates, and instead what matters is if she likes them! Similarly, Laura laments on previous performative behaviour... far more hopeless than romantic!
We talk a bit about sex, and it's so cringe I'm still wondering if we should cut that bit out! LOLS ...but we've purposely left the bit about Lily Allen's 'Womanizer' toy in, in the hope she might send us a couple! ;)
In all seriousness, Valentine's Day can be triggering, and statistics show that this day can hurt so many. We are so grateful for the brave and wise words of legends like Clementine Ford & Florence Given. We only wish we'd heard them sooner! But thank goodness, the time's they are a-changin'...
We've learnt the hard way that the most important relationship in life is the one you have with yourself, but self love isn't easy, and ADHD can make it even harder. If you are struggling to show yourself love, know that we are sending you all of ours! xx

Charlotte Mellor Meecham has recently been diagnosed with combined type ADHD. In this Bonus Blether the talented creative jumps aboard the late diagnosis rollercoaster with us.
Though she has concerns about medication, she has seen really positive results. Having battled an eating disorder and been diagnosed with the comorbities of anxiety and depression, the route cause was never identified. This sadly led Charlotte to alcohol abuse and a breakdown.
Finally armed with answers and a treatment plan in place, Charlotte is beginning a brand new chapter of her life in Portugal, where she is starting as a freelance illustrator.
If you want some incredible artwork get in touch with her; we SERIOUSLY can't sing her praises highly enough!
Charlotte is an absolute ledge! We loved chatting to her, and are so grateful for her incredible work and for having this insightful blether with us. THANK YOU SO MUCH CHARLOTTE! xx

This chaotic chinwag with three Neurodivergent Women is all about empowerment through connection, and it has a VERY happy ending! Team work truly does make the dream work.

Episode 40: The Non-cisgender & ADHD overlap with Katie Harrison
31 Jan 2023
01:06:09
Non-binary neurodivergent counsellor Katie Harrison LPC, based in Misouri is a total ledge! Their unique perpective as all of the above enables Katie to identify neurodvergence in clients the world over. Please note, that identification is not the same as diagnosis! Once identified, Katie helps clients navigate the adult ADHD diagnosis process in their country. Which comes with added difficulties when you are non-cisgendered.
It's been said that ADHDers are highly intuitive, Katie argues that the so called ‘intuition’ of people who are Assigned Female At Birth; especially those with late diagnosed ADHD is actually due to hyper-vigilance; a trauma response.
Gender is a social construct, and in this insightful episode Katie shares a link between the LGBTQIA+ community and neurodivergence that their work has uncovered. Katie was pushed outside of the classroom, which made them feel unacceptable to society. This lead to not being defined by social constructs… existing on the parameters of society.
THANK YOU to the AMAZING Katie Harrison LPC for educating us and sharing their late ADHD diagnosis journey!

Episode 38: ADHD, Humour and Personal Relationships with Merrill Davis
17 Jan 2023
01:01:40
After last week's tear jerker, be prepared to cry again, but this time with laughter! LA based Comedian/Actor Merril Davis, originally from Miami, is one of the funniest people we have had the absolute pleasure to interview!
Like us, Merrill basically has a neon flashing ADHDAF sign on her forehead, and is as perplexed as we are as to how they all went unnoticed. Alongside the words that haunt our dreams such as 'could try harder', or 'you're too much'; we discovered Merrill through another one of 'those phrases'... Merril 'means well'. This was the title of her incredible standup show at The Edinburgh Fringe last year, in which she shared her experiences of undiagnosed ADHD in 19 shows to rave reviews. She connected with many late diagnosed ADHDers who felt validated by her humour and unapologetic unmasking.
Merrill was labelled 'slow' in convent school, but unstructured college life was when her struggles really surfaced. Back to back job sackings, twice by her own father! Her ADHD symptoms even led to a one night stay in jail.
She discovered a therapist who immediately pointed out the obvious in 2016 and was diagnosed with Combined Type ADHD. Merrill is happy to finally have 'the magic potion' to help her manage life better. At times she even feels positive about having ADHD; but then come low moments when she feels heartbroken by the time and friendships lost to ADHD tax.
This interview is the perfect episode for Blue Monday week; Merrill made our faces hurt with laughter whilst helping heal our wounds with validation! THANK YOU SO MUCH MERRILL, YOU ABSOLUTE LEGEND! ENJOY! xx

Episode 37: Laura, one year on from ADHD diagnosis
10 Jan 2023
01:00:36
In this episode we explore where Laura is up to on the late ADHD diagnosis roller coaster and reflect on a monumental year since her diagnosis; that saw the start of a brand new chapter of her life.
At dawn, the day after being diagnosed with ADHD, Laura realised that her lifelong problems were not her fault. It suddenly dawned on her that she no longer needed to hate and chastise herself. This was the dawn of a new era; which saw her start this podcast... with Dawn :)
But what was the motivation behind becoming an ADHD activist? Sadly, a tragic chain of events which have impacted how Laura views the world and her place in it. Whilst navigating the grief cycle of late ADHD diagnosis, she has also been dealing with bereavement and devastating news. She questions if perhaps some of the emotional dysregulation and RSD are just sadness due to bereavement. Grief hits different for neurodivergents; and for someone finally aware of their serious time blindness; is it any wonder that she constantly hears the clock ticking?
BUT it isn't all gloom and doom! Armed with the answers to her struggles and having responded very well to ADHD medication; Laura has had an INCREDIBLE year! She has overcome the anger that she feared would never shift and is hopeful that ADHD coaching and therapy will improve her life further...meaning that she might actually be able to rest at some point! :)

We are so excited to share this incredible blether with a legendary lady for our first episode of 2023! If you haven’t already heard of Single Parent Pessimist Blogger, Claire or listened to her incredible Mind Vox Podcast, you need to remedy that… but not until you’ve listened to her story here first of course! :)
Claire was diagnosed (albeit rather vaguely?!) in 2022, she also identifies strongly with autism. Having blogged for a decade about her experiences as a single parent, the pandemic inspired Claire to create Mind Vox Podcast to raise mental health awareness. Claire’s ADHD, paired with her experiences have led to injustice sensitivity coursing through her veins. A self proclaimed chronic pain warrior, we are in absolute awe of this warrior woman! Don’t let the name fool you, this pessimist blew us away with her positive reflections on ADHD!
As informative as it is inspirational, we are sure you’ll love this blether! THANK YOU SO MUCH CLAIRE!

Episode 35: The Most ADHD Things We’ve done this Year!
27 Dec 2022
01:15:23
It’s the last episode of 2022, so we are celebrating our most popular creation: ‘the most ADHD thing’ and sharing YOUR most ADHD things of this year! We conclude by revealing the most ADHD thing WE’VE done this year… and some very ambitious plans for 2023! (All in the name of accountability…ie, we’ve said it now, so we have to do it!)
We created the concept of ‘most ADHD thing’ to act as the ultimate shame eradicator. An act of camaraderie; pulling the community together! We are all in the same boat, doing similar things and are all here to support each other!
This is a funny episode, perfect fodder for that week in the year when even neurotypicals don’t know what day it is! The mishaps are categorised but left anonymous, with one particular listener providing much amusement with eventful happenings and hospital ward moonwalkings! Go on girl!
Alongside announcing a new segment for the new year, we conclude with massive 2023 plans and our biggest mess up of 2022! Lols!

BURNOUT! ...Funny if it wasn't so true!
Christmas leaves Laura in semi constant nostalgic tears; triggered by everything from Bowie & Bing to Boy George, brass bands and Bill Murray! Siobhan O'Connor - @notsosecretlysober was diagnosed with ADHD in May of this year, at 32 in Manchester. In this inspirational blether, she shares her battles to overcome the ADHD comorbidities of alchohol and drug abuse; and concludes with her top tips for a Sober Christmas!
Historically, Siobhan felt pride in being 'the last person standing' at parties. Though she didn't drink everyday, when she did, her binge drinking was so extreme that she ended up being hospitalised on multiple occasions! Getting blackout drunk exacerbated her ADHD trait of risk taking behaviour. The terrifying situations Siobhan found herself in, in the name of 'fun', were no laughing matter! Prior to four years ago, Siobhan LOVED drinking! It was her whole identity(!) and led her to taking recreational drugs, and in turn into dangerous situations and debt. Reading Russell Brand's Recovery, inspired a year off the sauce... she has never looked back! Siobhan has a BRILLIANTLY names Social Media Management company: @ousaucedmedia - get it! :)
Dawn felt so inspired by Siobhan's story, she has decided this will be her first ever sober Christmas... and who knows what 2023 will bring!
Don't feel pressured to drink alcohol at Christmas! Alcohol can affect ADHD brains differently; as discussed in our previous episode: ADHD Vs Alcohol If you feel you are not in control of drinking or any other recreational behaviours, please reach out, there is help out there! For eg: Drink Aware, Alcohol Change, & Turning Point

The Episode we’ve wanted to create for the last seven months! As time has dragged on the weight of living in limbo has felt heavier and heavier. Finally, with the help of generous ADHDAF listener donations, Dawn has her ADHD Diagnosis! WE CAN’T SAY THANK YOU ENOUGH!
In this EXTRA SPECIAL Bonus Blether, Dawn shares her diagnosis ‘journey’ from start to finish. We also deep dive into our speciality - how it all FEELS on this next stop on the late ADHD diagnosis roller coaster. Thankfully there’s no need to quit the podcast or have her tattoo removed; Dawn is officially ADHDAF!
Thank you so much to everyone who made this possible, your support has had a life-changing outcome. To end this year with the answers and a plan in place for treatment is A CHRISTMAS MIRACLE!

Laura & Steph were thick as thieves from aged 11, until that wrecking ball of ADHD swung in and destroyed 20 years of friendship! Laura’s masking caused serious miscommunication and conflict to devastating consequences. The once best friends didn’t speak for over two years!
Despite masking to protect herself, hiding who she was and all that she was suffering was the very thing that kept her from safety. Even with the very best of intentions, lying can cause great pain.
After finally reuniting and being brave enough to tell the whole horrible truth behind the facade, the foes were friends once more.
This is a story of hope for the great many ADHDers who struggle to maintain friendships and often find themselves in conflict. With honest communication and compassion, even the deepest of wounds can be healed.
Two women who thought they would never be in the same room together now work together on two businesses, speaking every single day, and are now closer than ever. ADHD AWARENESS CHANGES LIVES!
Steph is neurotypical, and believes EVERYONE should listen to this podcast in order to understand the neurodevelopmental disorder that affects 1 in 40 adults and to help the fight for systemic change!
ALL HAIL THE QUEEN OF KARAOKE AND ALL THE DISCOS! Thank you so much Steph for all of your support and for your incredible creations!

We are so excited to share this blether with our favourite ADHD content creator! This Might Help ADHD creates such incredible social media posts that we share so much of her work, it's bordering on plagiarism! :) This Melbourne based writer got diagnosed at the start of the year; here she jumps onboard the late ADHD diagnosis roller coaster with us all the way from down under.
sharing content to spark conversation, to raise ADHD Awareness and to be a voice for those that can struggle to articulate the ADHD experience. Her words perfectly encapsulate what it feels like to have ADHD, and she uses @this_might_help_adhd to defend and support ADHDers with her informative and validating posts. This legendary lady literally hits the nail on the head every single time! WE BLOODY LOVE HER!!!
Alongside sharing her experiences, she talks about the validation that diagnosis brings. Though she can appreciate that the process was a lot more straightforward for her in Australia than for many in the UK, (ourselves included) her message is that ADHD Diagnosis at any age is life changing, invaluable and in many cases life saving!
Just like us, a late ADHD diagnosis, and discovering how the neurodevelopmental condition can be viewed in society, and the systems around it, hasn’t just changed her life... raising ADHD awareness has become her life purpose!
As a Mother, she carries guilt and concerns about passing on ADHD to her children. She has created her incredible platform to make the world a better place for ADHDers of future generations. We absolutely adore her concept of creating an ADHD statement available on thismighthelpadhd.com: Including firm, confident and clear statements that can help get your point across in the workplace, to the Dr and to ADHD deniers. To arm ADHDers with meaningful ways to calmly defend ADHD when it’s spoken about in a hurtful or misinformed way.
Seriously, the woman is a LEGEND; THANK YOU SO MUCH ADELE!

Episode 31: Hana Walker-Brown - ADHD, Misdiagnosis & Forgiveness
29 Nov 2022
01:14:15
Thunder bolts and lightning, very very…frustrating! This episode is proof that three women failed by the system uniting really can cause a storm!
Alongside being an award-winning Documentary Maker, Creative Director, Author, and Yoga Instructor, Hana Walker- Brown also has the patience of a Saint! This legendary lady persevered with this absolutely chaotic episode in which we battled the elements. A terrible storm caused internet problems, with Dawn getting booted off Zoom multiple times! There are a lot of stops and starts (hence slightly longer length) and a fair few really irritating Discord notification noises - too quiet for Laura to notice with her hearing problems, but loud enough to be picked up on the recording - APOLOGIES! At least it shows that our ‘We are ADHDAF’ Community Platform is popping! :D
Never has there been such a catastrophic and brilliant interview! As contradictory as the traits of ADHD and Autism; both of which Hana signified in her neurodivergent screening process. Diagnosed with ADHD at 31; she may pursue an Autism assessment in the future once the first diagnosis has sunk in.
Like so many of us, Hana is extremely hard on herself. At university, she had such extreme burnout, she was hospitalised! Misdiagnosed and prescribed anxiety and depression meds time and time again. Through raised awareness, she finally recognised her struggles as ADHD symptoms, only to be dismissed by her GP who stated, ‘a lot of women think they have this!’ If you are listening lady - SHAME ON YOU! Hana has been waiting two years for NHS ADHD therapy.
This episode is rammed full of insight, pearls, camaraderie, compassion and validation. So do follow the wonderful Hana’s lead and persevere with this slightly disjointed conversation. It truly is a special one! From at first viewing ADHD as her Superpower to then her kryptonite and now finding self forgiveness. This is one hell of a ride... Enjoy! THANK YOU SO MUCH HANA! We hope to join forces again and cause more storms very soon!

Episode 30: Mrs ADHD, Late Diagnosis, Pole Dancing and Sex
22 Nov 2022
01:05:23
You will likely already have heard of the wonderful Sam Brown, aka Mrs ADHD. Whether you have or not, you are in for a right treat! Sam is a regular Co-host of The ADHD Adults Podcast. She is on the Board of Trustees of the charity ADHD Adult UK, and she is married to the legendary Professor James Brown from Episode 5; who incidentally, was the first to point out that Sam is ADHDAF!
We are so very grateful to Sam for hopping aboard the late ADHD diagnosis rollercoaster with us for one hell of a ride! This blether has been months in the planning, but the three of us are so disorganised, it's taken this long to get together! Even then, it almost didn't happen! Sam forgot, AND then Laura forgot to do the groundwork to focus on Pole dancing. So this isn't exactly the episode we had 'planned', but we are so happy we finally caught up with Sam! This chaotic chinwag is an absolute joy.... just like the lady herself!
@_mrs_adhd_ radiates infectious joy! Which is why it's hard to imagine she suffers an irrational fear that she's about to be sacked, and has held such a low opinion of herself! At 45(possibly) she feels like a six year old, who only wants to play and be upside down. A form of stimming, which Dawn and I both did as children. This love of being upside down has led Sam to a passion for pole dancing.
Alongside a lot of laughs, and hardcore relatable feelings; Sam shares some insight into the Right to Choose option with Psychiatry UK (unfortunately not available in Scotland). She also talks about sex.
Entirely unplanned, Sam divulges that undiagnosed ADHD effected her sex life prior to meeting the love of her life. In investigating sex as a topic for an upcoming episode, we discovered two main camps in experiences. Sam shares one of these; infidelity in her youth. So just to make sure nobody gets the wrong impression(!) her pattern of being unfaithful to partners is HISTORICAL! Way before she met James(!) the couple are VERY happily married, and their ADHD diagnoses (and the unmasking that entails) has made their already rock solid relationship even stronger!
When we recorded, Sam was only 2 days into titration, and was yet to feel any effects of the low dose of ADHD medication prescribed. We will catch up with Sam at a later date to hear her progress, and we really look forward to speaking to this absolute legend again! THANK YOU SO MUCH SAM!
Also a MASSIVE THANK YOU to our Patrons! After months of persuasion, we finally mustered the bravery to set up a Patreon. As ADHDAF has grown rapidly, we have had to reluctantly admit that it has become unmanageable, and have been forced to ask for help in order to continue creating this podcast. If our podcast has helped you; we are asking that (if you are able) you help us via a monthly pledge; which will enable us to continue helping others. So BIG LOVE & SERIOUS GRATITUDE to all that have signed up to support us; and in particular to our Gold Tier Members: Sarah Newell, Ola Czarnecka, Rach, Callan,Rachael Riley, Derec Thompson, Anne Barrow, Leanne S, Clare, Amy, Liesel McDonald, Michelle Corcoran, Dee Naylor, Samantha Knowles-Owen, Kim Pierpoint, Sinéad McDermott, Amy Davies, Ceci, & Angela Curtis - who have helped make this episode happen; raising much needed ADHD awareness and providing validation and information to those who desperately need it. Though we can no longer provide a messaging service; with enough Patreon pledges, the Podcast and socials will continue, and we can chat to listeners on our We Are ADHDAF Community Platform. JOIN US!
Rebecca contacted us at the start of August, when our listeners began requesting ADHDAF merchandise. We had put a poll on our stories asking what they would like, when Rebecca slid into our DMs offering us the gift of DOPAMINE!
She very kindly gifted us her handmade Dopamine Molecule Collection as a thank you for creating the podcast she had been hyper-focusing on whilst investigating ADHD as a potential diagnosis for her Sister. It was through us sharing on the podcast how our ADHD presents very differently from one another that led Rebecca to the discovery that she too has ADHD!
Rebecca also sent us a surprise ADHDAF Brooch and Necklace; a prototype for the merchandise we sell on our online store. We were so excited and in love with her creations that we set to work putting our heads together to create this kitsch and fabulous collection of 'VISUAL DOPAMINE'
The motivation behind Rebecca's desire to collaborate with us, is that she has always wanted to do something to help her Sister, who is an inspiration to Rebecca - with her out-there style, personality and bravery. The loud, colourful, fun and fearless pieces from this collection are a representation of all that Rebecca admires in her Sister.
Her vision for the jewellery from this exclusive collaboration is that each piece is a talking point, to grab attention and to keep the conversation going in order to raise awareness - a visual representation of our podcast(!) and a beacon of bravery and authenticity; to help the wearer to take off their mask! We love the collection and everything it represents SO much!
That said, we can appreciate that much like our style of social media - this collection will not be for everyone! We had a negative comment on one of the promotional posts; which in part we feel was likely due to an albeit clever(!) very 'intense' phrase. Said post was designed to kill multiple birds with one stone by mocking the idea of ADHD being trendy, and therefore raising awareness; whilst also marketing the merchandise and our ADHD awareness raising podcast.
We decided that rather than putting ourselves through a gruelling 24 hours of RSD with a story poll, we would address the concerns raised on the podcast, to explain our stance and reassure all of our intentions. We work day and night for the cause. This podcast and the ADHD community are quite literally our purpose. We will continue to dedicate our lives to raising awareness with a view to inspire systemic change and help other ADHDers to the very best of our abilities.
Thank you so much to.... what's her name again?! ;) ;) - the INCREDIBLE and talented legend Rebecca for this blether, her creations, and for being a valued member of the ADHDAF Family!
Episode 29: Riona O Connor - ADHD, Gatekeeping, Intrusive Thoughts and IKEA Instructions
15 Nov 2022
00:54:24
A massive thank you to Riona O Connor for sharing her very fresh ADHD diagnosis journey with us!
If you haven’t already heard of Ireland’s finest, Riona is an actor; who prior to Motherhood performed in the West End. Finding theatre schedules too demanding once starting a family, she scratched her performing itch by creating comedic content on her social media platform, for which she has gained an enormous following: @rionaoconnor_ Alongside her content creation, and comedy songwriting {check out her album: The Brightside} Riona is also a voiceover artist. With her gorgeous County Kerry accent, you can instantly hear why this legend of a lady would be paid to speak!
Riona jumped onboard the late ADHD diagnosis rollercoaster in March of this year, after divulging her inability to read and follow Ikea instructions pamphlets to a Teacher friend, who suggested she consider the neurodevelopmental disorder as the cause.
Missed up until the age of 40 due to masking from a young age and that old ADHD stereotype conflicting with ‘not having a hyperactive bone in her body.’
There are three things in particular that we particularly LOVE about this episode; firstly, the way that Riona discovered her neurodivergence. With ableist media like THAT Guardian article mocking ADHD as a trend and invalidating conversations about ADHD with non doctors; it’s important to note, that unknown masking pros like the three of us found out and sought diagnosis after divulging seemingly trivial symptoms in chats with clued-up friends. Secondly, Riona’s very unique answer to what she would change about the ADHD diagnostic process. Thirdly, we fully agree that the word lazy needs to get right in the bin! Finally, we just love Riona, and we know you will too. OK, that’s four, but dyscalculia! :)
We are so incredibly grateful to this absolute LEGEND for sharing her Inattentive ADHD diagnosis story with us. Not only is she an absolute joy to blether with; so much of what she says resonates hard, and she shares some absolute pearls to treasure too. THANK YOU SO MUCH RIONA!
We look forward to sharing our next chapter with you in the coming days when we've recovered from the lurgy. In the meantime, if you haven't already, you can enter our giveaway to WIN an ADHDAF X All The Discos Festive Bundle on Instagram Finally, if you have enjoyed this episode, we would love you to make a donation to our Buy Me a Coffee Page
Big love L & D X
TRIGGER WARNING: This episode features strong language and topics that some may find disturbing. Such as mental health issues, low self worth/self-esteem, intrusive thoughts, and family struggles.
Episode 28: ADHD, Media Ableism, Burnout and Depression
08 Nov 2022
00:54:13
Our late ADHD diagnosis rollercoaster ride is currently in a trough. But despite us both finding ourselves in the midst of a bit of a depressive episode, this is not a depressing episode!
We kick off with some ranting about the appalling Guardian article that has left the ADHD community feeling like the butt of a very bad joke. Thank you to everyone who has shared our open letter to The Guardian. Here's a link if you've not seen it and would like to encourage an apology: https://www.instagram.com/p/CkiaofRqKub/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link
We are very happy to be reunited, and sharing our first blether with just the two of us in three weeks. It's taken Laura going on holiday to realise that she had been existing in a constant state of burnout for the last six months, and that she had gotten into the habit of equating her self-worth to her ridiculous and unsustainable productivity level. Meanwhile, whilst Dawn was left steering the ship solo she came to the realisation that depression has crept in. Feeling as though everything is on top of her; the way ADHD presents for her being that she doesn't feel her emotions until they are at breaking point.
The VERY good news is that Dawn FINALLY has a date for her private ADHD assessment, and it is SOON! Monday 14th November, and we hope that this date is THE date! We will be doing a special episode sharing her experience, which will hopefully be a lot more positive than the last, with Dawn finally getting the answers she has waited so long for.
Dawn wanted to share the NHS ADHD diagnosis experience on the podcast and therefore (unnecessarily!) feels some guilt about going down the private route. But it really is essential for her mental health that she starts receiving the treatment and support that she desperately needs. She is so incredibly grateful to you all for your donations, enabling her to go private, which she otherwise wouldn't have been able to do, so a MASSIVE THANK YOU to all who have donated! If you would like to make a donation to Dawn's assessment, you can do so here: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/adhdasfemales
We have come to the realisation that how we are currently doing things just isn't working. We want to provide a better service in which we don't lose messages due to the sheer volume we receive daily, and we want to be able to do MORE! More activism, more connection. So we are going to be starting a community platform. We believe that in creating this we can do better work and be able to continue ADHD As Females, which in it's current form - despite all the will in the world - has become unmanageable. We look forward to sharing our new chapter with you next week.
As ever we are so grateful for your support and encouragement and are in awe of the ADHD online community. We really are all in this together!
Trigger Warning* This episode features strong language and some topics that some might find distressing, such as: depression, grief, bereavement, ableism, mental health struggles , suicide, addiction, eating disorders
The BIG ADHD Fundraiser 2025: ADHDadultUK & ADHDAF+

'Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.' - Margaret Mead The perfect quote for The Big ADHD Fundraiser!
REGISTER insterest to cycle any or all of the days: HERE DONATE to the fundraiser HERE Find out more about ADHDAF+ HERE Find out more about ADHDadultUK HERE
I've been trying to keep this secret for MONTHS! The most exciting news EVER, shared here in a relaxed chinwag with Dr James Brown of ADHDadultUK and the founder of the third annual BIG ADHD Fundraiser, Darren. Shared on the very day of the first ever ADHDAF+ Peer Support Group, launching in the silver City of Aberdeen, where this podcast began!
I could not be more grateful to Darren, Claire, Beth, Kirsty and all of the team behind this INCREDIBLE fundraiser for including ADHDAF+ Charity this year! But WAIT FOR IT... not only are they cycling 288 miles through Scotland, Wales and England in LEOPARD PRINT to honour ADHDAF's Leopard Print Army (the community that inspired the Charity) but THEY'VE EVEN GOT A LEOPARD PRINT SUPPORT VEHICLE!!! I can't cope!!
In all seriousness, this event has raised £19K over the last two years for ADHDadultUK and ADHD Liberty Charity... and as shared in this episode by ADHD adults Podcast host James; that money has created a legacy which will benefit hundreds of thousands of ADHDers for many years to come! ALL OF THE FEELS and absolutely all of the respect and gratitude to Darren and the Big ADHD Fundraiser crew!
You are helping ADHDAF+ Charity get up and running, so that we can connect and empower ADHD adults of marginalised genders in Scotland, England and Wales. We cannot say THANK YOU enough!
TW: Contains swearing and mentions of bullying, low self worth and difficulties faced due to ableism and unidentified ADHD. If you are struggling, lo siento. You are not alone. Please do reach out for help HERE
We are ONE Community, and TOGETHER we thrive. LEOPARD PRINT ARMY! Laura X
*Though ADHDAF Podcast and all things ADHDAF inspired and help fundraise for the Charity, ADHDAF+ is an entirely separate entity
We are so grateful to ADHD Babes for joining us on the late ADHD diagnosis rollercoaster, and so excited to share this insightful interview with two absolute mega babes!
ADHD Babes founder Vivienne Isebor & Podcast Producer Shauna Campbell share their late ADHD diagnosis stories and the work of their incredible Community Group for Black Women & Non-Binary people with ADHD.
Us newly ‘diagnosed’ neurodivergent neighbours are on a mission to raise much needed awareness about ADHD! But we are not experts(!) and can only share our experiences; therefore we invite others along to educate us. Viv & Shauna do exactly that, in sharing their perspective and the work of their group, ‘born out of necessity due to the lack of support and resources in Adult ADHD services, especially when considering the marginalisation of groups and the lack of representation for Black Women and Non-Binary people.’
In their podcast, The ADHD Babes invite you to walk with them in their journey of learning about our wonderful brains and all the things that come with living in a world where you have to manage multiple intersectionality's. ADHD babes is an open space for anyone who's looking for support with ADHD. The intersectional impact of being a black woman or non-binary person with ADHD has unique disadvantages, their organisation aims to address through specialist support, tailored workshops and community-centred outreach
We so loved meeting Viv & Shauna, THANK YOU SO MUCH LADIES!
The most ADHD thing we did this week is apparent from the intro in which one half of ADHDAF is absent… Despite planning everything and trying to get everything done before Laura went on holiday, we forgot to record the intros and outros - ADHDAF!!!!!
Trigger warning* this episode contains strong language and topics which some will find disturbing, including: suicide, mental health struggles and financial difficulties.
Episode 26: ADHD Awareness Month Special - ADHDAF Listeners Speak
25 Oct 2022
00:32:59
We conclude ADHD Awareness Month with this VERY SPECIAL Episode in which some of our amazing listeners share what they want the world to know about ADHD.
The theme for ADHD Awareness Month 2022 is ‘Understanding a Shared Experience’, and we feel incredibly privileged to be able to use our platform to empower our listeners to share their ADHD experience with the world!
Back in August we ran a campaign on our socials called ‘It Only Takes a Minute ADHDAF’ in which we asked followers to share a one minute video or voicenote to volunteer their voices to raise awareness about ADHD. This is what it was for.
As we always say, we are not therapists, experts or coaches, just two late diagnosed ADHD women sharing our personal experiences in the hope that they help others. In the last six months since launching we have been completely blown away by the impact ADHDAF has had. So we know the importance and value of opening up about the realities of living with the neurodevelopmental disorder.
The ADHD online community has been such an enormous help to us both as we ride the late ADHD diagnosis rollercoaster. We are so grateful to have found so many like us, and to have had so many join our Leopard Print Army for ADHDAF Day on Friday 21st October.
Together we thrive; and we believe that together we can incite systemic change!
THANK YOU SO MUCH to everyone who took part in this very special episode, ADHDAF Day, who sent selfies to be a face of ADHDAF, and to all of our listeners, followers and guest speakers over the last 6 months. We REALLY REALLY appreciate you all! Big love L & D xx
You can also buy incredible handmade ADHDAF merchandise from collaborative collections with incredible creatives: Working Clasp & All The Discos here: https://www.adhdasfemales.com/merchandise
*Trigger Warning - this episode features strong language and sensitive topics that some may find distrurbing, including: suicide, eating disorders, severe mental health struggles,
Welcome to the wonderful world of Sheri Scott, aka @foreveryoursbetty We are both longterm fans of this incredible creative's content, so we feel very lucky and incredibly grateful to have had a blether with this absolute tangerine dream!
Glasgow's finest Sheri, is a multi-hyphenate - very appropriately nicknamed 'the ideas factory'. Her flame haired head hosts a brilliant brain constantly buzzing with brightly coloured ideas, which she uses to put the fire into businesses. From high fashion to chimpanzees, you name it and Sheri's unique and creative 'big picture' brain waves will catapult companies to flaming results. You've only got to take a quick glance at her own platform to see that this lady is a Queen amongst content creators!
As the pandemic threw a spanner into the works the world over, Sheri's work and coping mechanisms shut down, just as Tik Tok began raising awareness about ADHD - opening her eyes to the neurodevelopmental disorder. In 2020 Sheri received a late ADHD diagnosis at the age of 34, and was referred for a screening for Autism, as she presents highly for this also. (We will further explore ASD in a furture episode)
What followed was sadly nothing short of a frightening and dangerous ordeal! Without the essential support she should have been provided(!) Sheri has taken treatment into her own hands. She takes responsibility for managing her clashing ADHD and Autism symptoms, and has found what works for her. *We hear of many using ADHD medication in a way that works for them, but just in an attempt to be responsible (though being so isn't our strong point!) I'm sure all will understand that we have to say this - always read and follow medication instructions*
We are so grateful to Sheri for sharing one hell of a ride on the late ADHD diagnosis rollercoaster with us! Her insight into 'NEURODIVERSE JOY' is so touching, that it's even giving me goosebumps now just thinking about it! We were so moved in her description of the joy that the colour orange brings her, that we've changed our signature colours, turning our socials orange for the week in her honour... WE'VE BEEN TANGOED!
Serendipitously, orange is also the colour of ADHD Awareness Month, so we are very happy to be giving Sheri mega dopamine hits, whilst raising awareness for the cause at this important time. Further serendipitously, having been enamoured by Sheri being her striking citrus self unapologetically; we were hurt this week for being called - in a nutshell - 'too much'. We end this episode with a Reynolds rant(!) in which we acknowledge our need to educate ourselves about social media accessibility. We understand that we need to be mindful of that going forward; but taking the lead of Sheri, we outright refuse to dull our sparkle! We are loud, colourful, chaotic and busy-minded people who won't be to everyone's tastes; but after a lifetime of masking, authenticity is essential as we embark on this new chapter which we share for the cause. Our podcast and our platform are a reflection of ourselves and how ADHD presents in US.
We take great inspiration from your authenticity, creativity and bravery, and therefore we are forever yours Sheri!
*TRIGGER WARNING* There is some swearing, mentions of medication, misdiagnosis, malpractice, mental health crisis, financial struggles, and heart stabbing - metaphorically!
On Tuesday 4th October Dawn went for an NHS ADHD Assessment in Aberdeen. We couldn't believe that her long awaited diagnosis day was falling in ADHD Awareness Month, AND on the day we hit 100K downloads! Suffice to say, this was not the episode we thought we would be putting out!
This is an Episode of two parts. As planned, we wanted to share this very important experience in real time, so began by the pre preparation and feelings the day before the big day to help others awaiting their assessment. Turns out the day was indeed big, but for the wrong reasons!
If you've read the Press and Journal article, you will already know about this ordeal. We are very grateful to journalist Chloe Irvine for the fantastic feature on Dawn, highlighting how very broken the current system is: https://www.pressandjournal.co.uk/fp/news/aberdeen-aberdeenshire/4876867/im-not-sure-ive-got-another-four-months-in-me-to-wait-rgu-students-desperation-for-adhd-diagnosis/
This is NOT what we thought we would be sharing, and certainly not the answers that Dawn had hoped and hung on for. We understand that the underfunded and overstretched NHS is absolutely up against it! The real issue here is the lack of communication. Not laying out the timeline of the process is so incredibly damaging and unforgivable, and Dawn has made a formal complaint.
Whilst Dawn recovers and gathers her strength, as she plans her next move she would like to thank every single one of you who has reached out with messages of support both before and after this horrendous experience. It is your encouragement that is giving her fuel to carry on fighting this battle.
Though we had so wanted to put out a positive message to all of those seeking NHS ADHD diagnosis and treatment, sadly what we have instead is a podcast episode from two women who were not just let down by the system as children; but now who have also been let down by the broken NHS ADHD diagnosis process in their late 30s this ADHD Awareness Month.
Dawn feels that the only positive is that in sharing her ordeal she is raising crucial awareness and letting so many others who are suffering similar know that that they are not alone. YOU ARE NOT ALONE. We hope for a better, quicker, more communicative and supportive diagnosis system by next ADHD Awareness Month.
We conclude on a positive note, looking ahead to alternative ADHD diagnosis routes, and announcing the exciting things we have planned this month: If you follow our socials you will already know that Laura managed to hit her starsign deadline and get the brand new website up on 9th October! LOLS. We could not be more excited to collaborate with Working Clasp for handmade ADHDAF jewellery and All The Discos for handmade festival style ADHDAF party capes made from recycled party decorations! Check out our amazing new merchandise and website here: https://www.adhdasfemales.com/
We are doing an Intagram Live with Louise 'Pink Pear Bear Williams' on Wednesday 12th October at 8:30pm - we invite you to click this link and 'ask us anything', which we will answer LIVE: https://www.instagram.com/reel/CjcgF8DKWKc/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link
Finally we invite you all to join our LEOPARD PRINT ARMY for ADHDAF DAY - Friday 21st October. Wear at least one item of leopard print in a show of solidarity for the cause. We want change! If you do too, join us by tagging us in your pictures, and videos wearing at least one leopard print item. ADHDAFarmy!
Trigger Warning Due to the emotion of this long awaited appointment, this is a very sweary episode. Lots effing, but this is all very raw, having been recorded the day before and day after the ordeal - apologies for swearing like sailors! Mentions of suicide and severe mental health struggles.
In this episode, we swap roles (PHEW!) and invite Alex and James onto ADHDAF for our standard, disorganised, rambling blether.
The four of us have joined forces to highlight the importance of community. Using our voices collectively, learning from each other’s knowledge and experiences, and supporting each other is the most powerful way to raise awareness in the hope to influence systemic change.
We really are all in this together! The support of the online ADHD community has, and continues to be a lifeline for us both; which is why we always recommend leaning into it. In particular, we are incredibly grateful to James and Alex for their invaluable work educating the masses about the neurodevelopmental condition with their Podcast and Focus Mag, for supporting late diagnosed ADHDers (us included) with their charity ADHDadultUK, and for welcoming us into the ADHD podcasting community. We are on the same team making much needed noise for the cause!
Thank you lads (lads, lads!) we love this episode, in which the best frenemies confess their undying love for one another and set us a piece of homework- which obviously we still haven’t done!
In all seriousness though, où est la banque?!
*TRIGGER WARNING* It’s a sweary one, with naughty words throughout with references of mental health struggles.
Episode 22: ADHD Clinician Compassion with Jenny Okolo
27 Sep 2022
01:00:05
Jenny Okolo is a lead psychiatric occupational therapist, and an award-nominated mental health advocate, with extensive experience in the criminal justice sector.
This summer Jenny became a TEDx Speaker for TEDxNHS. In her incredible talk she invited listeners to challenge the limits of their empathy, displaying the enormous impact compassion can have. ‘TEDxNHS was founded as a unique movement to enable the voices of NHS staff and patients to be heard on a national stage and spread their learning across the system. Bringing change to the NHS through the power of storytelling, TEDxNHS aims to inspire us to think differently, dream bigger, and design better for the population we serve.’
‘We as healthcare professionals have such an opportunity to look beyond labels’ ~ @jenokolo
Jenny is our first neurotypical guest, and she plays a part in the NHS ADHD diagnostic system; helping people to get diagnosed and to see the value of diagnosis. Her message is completely aligned with our values: COMPASSION for neurodivergents, and that ADHD needs to be taken seriously!
With different perspectives on the current ADHD diagnosis crisis, inevitably we do see some aspects differently… but that’s the whole point!
With an underfunded NHS stretched to its limit, and undiagnosed ADHDers suffering in silence due to stigma/lack of awareness or living in limbo hell for years on outrageously long waiting lists for assessment and treatment; people are suffering on both sides!
We feel it is essential to learn and understand the problem from all angles in order to find a way forward. It isn’t a case of ‘us and them’… As we all desperately need a better system; it is essential that ADHDers and clinicians pull together in order to influence systemic change!
We loved hearing about the incredible work Jenny does, and are so grateful to this legendary lady for giving us invaluable insight into the alternative perspective of the ADHD Diagnosis Crisis. THANK YOU SO MUCH JENNY!
*Trigger Warning* We discuss some sensitive topics which some may find disturbing. Including: BN, ED, criminality, and mental health crisis.

Episode 21: ADHD, Gender Transition & Power with Joe Charlan
20 Sep 2022
00:53:01
Joe Charlan is both a legend, and ADHDAF family! Freshly diagnosed Joe was born and educated as female in the 70s and 80s - which will likely play a large role in why he’s only just been diagnosed at the age of 46!
Mancunian Joe, a Commissioning Manager supporting people with disabilities, now identifies as a transgender man.
Right at the very start of this podcast, Joe reached out thanking us for our statement of inclusion re gender and sexuality and we hit it off. We’ve had a mutual appreciation society ever since!
Alongside sharing his experiences of undiagnosed ADHD, his recent diagnosis journey, and how the disorder and diagnosis effects his life; Joe shares a truly incredible insight…. What has undiagnosed ADHD cost Joe? POWER. We resonate so hard, and we are sure you will too!
Join us as Joe shares where he is up to on the late ADHD diagnosis rollercoaster, and the damage self deprecation can cause. This is a truly POWERFUL episode!
THANK YOU SO MUCH JOE for helping us further understand the impact of late diagnosed ADHD!
We loved this chat, and are sure you will too.
*Trigger Warning* Contains swearing, and subjects some might find disturbing such as bullying, negative self talk, low self worth/esteem, anger, being misunderstood/belittled, mental health struggles and self sabotage.
We can’t believe we’ve made twenty episodes… ironically, that’s probably due to imposter syndrome!
This is a really meaty episode(!) in which we share our insta story poll results, our personal reflections, and answer your ‘ask us anything’ questions.
Never has their been a week where we have achieved so much and felt like such total failures! Comparison is the thief of joy, and imposter syndrome and dopamine deficiency suck all of the glory out of the wins!
We’ve ended up letting the above upset ourselves and each other(!) and all on the week we are diving into the topic of imposter syndrome and identity crisis! You couldn’t write it, but we can discuss it… in our standard oversharey, brutally blurted out honest way that we hope listeners will find relatable and validating.
Merriam-Webster defines imposter syndrome, in part, as "persistent doubt concerning one's abilities or accomplishments accompanied by the fear of being exposed as a fraud despite evidence of one's ongoing success.‘’ ~ verywellmind.com
We’ve said in jest in the past ‘who T F are we? We thought we knew, but then we discovered at 38 that we’d been battling through life with undiagnosed brain disorders, and now we haven’t a clue’… in all seriousness, identity crisis is very common among late diagnosed ADHDers. ‘Being repeatedly misunderstood causes people with ADHD to deeply misunderstand themselves and their situations. Feeling deficient and mistrusting yourself from an early age makes it extraordinarily difficult to properly evaluate yourself as an adult. There is a continual internal vacillation.’ ~Additudemag.com
As ever, this podcast is us documenting our experiences on the late ADHD diagnosis rollercoaster in real time; hop aboard and hold on tight!
Trigger Warning: we use strong language, and mention topics that some might find disturbing; including imposter syndrome, self loathing, identity crisis, self sabotage, and excessive use of the word ‘journey’ - cringe!
Episode 19: ADHD, Nutrition & Excercise with Hanna Baxter
06 Sep 2022
00:58:33
Hanna, is so driven to achieve her healthy eating and fitness goals that she motivates others to do the same online: @hannabfitness
So it could be a surprise to hear that Hanna was diagnosed this year with ADHD at the age of 40! BUT, what we have learnt on our late diagnosed ADHD mission is that THERE IS NO ONE SIZE FITS ALL! Despite the similarities between ADHDers there are as many differences.
The areas in which some of us struggle to survive, some thrive and vice versa. Unlike us, and many other ADHDers, Hanna doesn’t struggle with self care, motivation or finances… One more time for the folk in the back - ADHD PRESENTS DIFFERENTLY IN EACH INDIVIDUAL!
Hanna helps people (now us included) overcome the ‘all or nothing’ mindset which holds so many of us back. This ‘black and white’ thinking is so common with ADHDers, but having fought hard to overcome her own struggles, Hanna uses what she has learnt in battling her undiagnosed neurodivergence to motivate others.
A genuine positive to ADHD that Hanna shares - EMPATHY.
This absolute powerhouse understands struggle and blocks only too well, and is therefore able to help people to overcome theirs: https://form.jotform.com/210422639917053
Alongside sharing how ADHD negatively impacts her life, and her diagnosis and treatment journey, Hanna gives us some fantastic advice about health and self care, which we are so grateful for!
Mainly: STOP BEING SO HARD ON YOURSELF AND SETTING UNREALISTIC GOALS!
Thank you Hanna, you ledge! There’s so much to take away from this interview,; relatable and inspirational, Enjoy!
TRIGGER WARNING: We cover some sensitive topics which some may find triggering. Including; mental health struggles, weight loss, medication, ADHD diagnosis

This episode comes with an ENORMOUS TRIGGER WARNING! Containing mentions of: ED, BN, AN, ABW, BDD, BI, BETRS, COE, EDNOS, MH, SH, CA, SUI
Please handle this episode with care, and don’t listen if any of the above or any mentions of disordered eating are triggering for you. If you are struggling with disordered eating in any form, please reach out for the help you need. One example of a fantastic charity: https://www.beateatingdisorders.org.uk/
We cover this topic extremely reluctantly! As we bumble our way through, you can literally hear at points this discussion has felt like pulling teeth. Despite continuous requests from listeners to cover this, we’ve put it off for three months, but having discovered stats proving the strong correlation between ADHD and BEO / BN, we’ve put our shame and fear of upsetting people aside in the hope that our honesty can help others.
We apologise if any of the language we use in an attempt to convey our experiences is inappropriate or upsetting. Our aim is to be part of the solution rather than the problem, but we accept the likely possibility of getting things wrong. As ever, please note that we are not Drs, therapists, experts… we are just two late diagnosed ADHD women, reflecting on our own disordered eating and body issues of the past, with the new knowledge of our neurodivergence, and how the two relate in an attempt to validate the experiences of others like us; to eradicate the shame of potential comorbidities of a brain disorder, and to pull the community together.
Though potentially as an instinctive defence mechanism, we move onto our usually silly blethering about nonsense, meaning this episode ends on a high after such dark subject matter.
Episode 17: ADHD NHS Shared Care DENIED: Nicole Nadler
23 Aug 2022
01:02:17
Imagine getting a private diagnosis after hearing the lengthy wait for an NHS ADHD assessment, only to then have said diagnosis denied by the NHS!
That’s exactly what happened to our next guest earlier this year… New Yorker, Nicole followed her heart to Edinburgh, Scotland, where she lives with her Scottish husband and works as a writer. She’s currently reviewing acts performing in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
ADHD Shared Care, in a nutshell: is where a specialist (ie a private Psychiatrist) shares responsibilities with a General Practitioner (GP) in the treatment of the patient. Including: management of prescription, monitoring progress, tests - such as ECG, communication of dose changes during titration, etc.
Despite many ADHDers in desperate need of treatment being advised by the NHS to go private if they can afford to due to the wait; Nicole was told that her shared care was rejected BECAUSE she wasn’t diagnosed by the NHS! Nicole is a UK resident who has a brain disorder that is considered a disability in the UK. MAKE IT MAKE SENSE!
Despite sharing her story with BBC Scotland, Nicole’s case has not been reviewed.
Like many, Nicole has to pay for her medication, and feels so dismissed by the NHS, that she doesn’t have the energy to keep fighting to be heard to access the treatment she needs and is entitled to. Fortunately, Nicole is privileged enough to be able to pay for her medication, unlike many already struggling to survive the cost of living crisis(!) forced to choose between medication that enables them to function and basic living costs.
Despite her diagnosis ordeal, Nicole’s tale is a positive one… ‘Having ADHD is the worst thing that ever happened to me. Getting an ADHD diagnosis is the best thing that ever happened to me!’ - Nicole Nadler
After a lifetime of self loathing, battling depression, feelings of ineptitude and despair, Nicole has found acceptance, is thriving and making up for lost time! GO ON NICOLE!
We LOVE this proper blether of an episode! There’s so much to take away from it, from validation to inspiration… ENJOY!
*Trigger Warning* This episode contains strong language, and sensitive topics which some may find distressing. Including; grief, severe mental health struggles and suicide
Undiagnosed ADHDers can’t cope. The NHS can’t cope. And we can’t cope with constantly hearing from listeners just how broken the ADHD (in particular the adult ADHD) diagnostic system is!
We haven’t started this podcast to get internet points, we’ve done it to help others like us. We get multiple messages daily telling us our ramblings are helping people feel validated and less alone in their suffering, which is incredible! BUT, what we really want is to help (even in a tiny way) to influence systemic change, so that ADHDers that need/want to access medical diagnosis/treatment don’t have to suffer like they are!
This very emotional episode, in which we share just a handful of the countless experiences we get sent, our @adhdasfemales Instagram story poll results, followers suggestions for how to change the broken system, and our own, is fuelled by rage at the injustice of how many undiagnosed adult ADHDers are being treated by medical professionals.
It’s not all ranting and feet stomping though, we promise! This isn’t about pointing the finger, it’s about potential problem solving.. and there is some joy in it too.
ADHDers need help, the NHS needs help, CHANGE IS URGENTLY NEEDED. We need to come together and understand this crisis from both sides and start a new system to save lives!
*Trigger Warning* Alongside swearing, this episode contains topics such as medical negligence, false accusations of abuse, body shaming, ADHD denying, severe mental health struggle and suicide.
