Join us as we talk to Peter Liljedahl, author of Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics as we take a deep dive into the art of thin slicing and how to create a sequence of tasks to take students where they are to where you want them to be. Peter Also shares the power of planning and decomposing that path with 3 different types of tasks.  Peter walks us through a grade 7 lesson (launch, body and closing) on area with a reminder to plan on the assumption that they know how but launch on the assumption that they don't and highlights to begin where everyone can start and gradually increase complexity.

We talk about Peter's new research on closing the lesson, including noticing and naming variance and invariance , teacher scribe during consolidation, how the three types of tasks show up in the check your understanding questions (mild, medium, spicy) and also how three types shows up in the new note taking structure.

We also talk about the new Book, "Mathematics Tasks for the Thinking Classroom: Grades K-5" by Peter and Maegan Giroux, coming in May and the 6-12 book coming in June and our excitement looking forward to the 2nd Annual BTC Conference in Phoenix July 1st-2nd.

Today we chat with Alicia Burdess about teaching through tasks & big beautiful problems worth solving.  Alicia shares her math learning & education journey and all the learning  she engages in to continue to bring joy and instill confidence of solving big beautiful problems and teaching through them with both students & adults.  Having the goal that every child can learn math to the highest level and instilling that in students is a focus of Alicia's work.

We chat about Alicia's book, The Dragon Curve, where we get a glimpse into the beauty of math and experience a big beautiful problem through a story that inspires the inner mathematician in all of us.  She reflects on this process and her passion of creating learning opportunities that engage both students & adults as problem solvers.

Alicia has served as the President of the Math Council of the Alberta Teachers' Association and currently sit on the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics' Publishing Committee. Alicia has a Master's Degree in Education from Simon Fraser University and am looking forward to one day pursuing a Ph.D. ​You will likely see Alicia presenting at math conferences, collaborating with teachers online and in person, and is always excited to talk about learning and loving math.

We chat with Dave Martin about Outcome Based Assessment and Teaching  & Learning Mathematics in High School.  Dave shares with us pieces of his journey on changing his assessment & instruction practices as a high school math teacher and how this impacted him &  his students.

Dave Martin has a Master of Mathematics  Degree in Education, has been teaching for 16 years, during which time, he was nominated for Teacher of Excellence in Alberta, has spoken across North America, and has successfully removed most grades in most of his high school math courses. Dave has taught grades 6-12, was one of the division's Math/Science Lead teachers, a Vice Principal of two schools, and currently is a Post Secondary Instructor with Red Deer Polytechnic in the Faculty of Education

We talk with Maggie MacPhee, a Math Lover, Board Gamer, Tea Drinker and a secondary mathematics teacher here in Chignecto Central Centre for Education in Nova Scotia.  Maggie has joined us in our professional learning community book study on Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics last spring, and has had the opportunity to work alongside Lisa Lunney Borden as a teacher and a learner. 

Maggie reflects on her teaching & learning mathematics journey, some of her notices and wonders as she navigates her way in this new year and dives into effective teaching practices that are impacting student achievement and well being. She talks about the importance of students seeing themselves as mathematical learners and effective teaching practices that she is implementing to help students learn mathematics through exploring  & solving contextual problems and learning through rich tasks.  She shares how she see's where students are at as they think and work through tasks and how this informs her next steps.

Maggie shares pieces of advice to teachers to help shift their practice to more equitable teaching practices that allow all students opportunities to engage successfully and learn challenging mathematics. We reflect on the challenges we face from being so steeped in a traditional colonized version of education and the importance of presuming competence in our students.  We chat about our excitement of the upcoming NSMTA conference at the end of the month here in Nova Scotia and the NCTM conference that took place in Los Angeles and some of our Canadian math hero's involved

Lisa is a local mathematics education hero, a professor of mathematics education at St. Francis Xavier University here in Nova Scotia & holds the John Jerome Paul Chair for Equity in Mathematics Education.   Lisa's experience of teaching grades 7 through 12 mathematics in a Mi'kmaw community has shaped how she thinks about teaching & learning mathematics.

Lisa shares her story as a mathematics teacher & learner and her commitment to research & outreach that focuses on decolonizing mathematics education through culturally based practices and experiences that are rooted in Indigenous language and knowledge systems.
