G'day mate! Adri and Helene are headed to Australia as they talk about Our Lips Are Sealed (1999), starring Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. Join them for an episode of reminiscing about the Kneel Diamond, Emil Hatchew (bless you!), and our favorite outfits in the Dualstar universe yet!

Switching Goals (1999)09 Nov 202301:58:01

Helene and Adri continue their nostalgia-filled Olsen twin journey with yet another Dualstar Entertainment production, Switching Goals (1999). Not known for our knowledge, or (frankly) passion, for sports, this episode is full of non-sporting observations with the occasional bone thrown at those of you who actually like sports.

518: The One where Dobby Helps Harry Find the Room of Requirement (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Chapter 18)09 Jan 202101:23:18

We're back with the first episode we recorded after the new year started, and 2021 is certainly not pulling any punches in the political arena. With just the first week of 2021 under our belt, we've seen an attempted coup, this time by force (riots led by white supremacist groups, the proud boys, and Q conspiracy theorists at the Capitol incited by the lame-duck president). In this episode, we cover the politics of teach-ins, silence & knowledge, and coalition when it comes to Harry and his fellow Hogwarts students to build what becomes Dumbledore's Army during this chapter.

Patrons get access to our discussion on what would it look like if the character of Luna was gender-flipped in the series, and what the series would look like if the gender-flipping also extended to her father. 517: Did Hermione go too Far? (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Chapter 17)02 Jan 202101:31:20

Helene, K. Alex, and special guest Aureo from the Speak Beasty podcast talk about chapter 17 of OotP, discuss the news of the week (including some news about the author of the series), debate over the politics of Hermione securing silence by magical means, consider if Molly really wanted to stop the trio from becoming politically involved, and much more.

516: Grassroots Movements in the Wizarding World (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Chapter 16)19 Dec 202001:20:20

In this episode, Helene and Adri land on the same politic for the first time since the show format started leaving the politics of the chapter open! Before they discussed chapter 16 of OotP, "In the Hog's Head," they talked about the news of the week, which included presidential pardons and the last days of the Trump presidency. Skipping the Hogwarts Debate club shenanigans altogether, they talked about what actually makes a grassroots movement successful, wondering if the Death Eaters could be considered a grassroots movement.

This episode's bonus segment is relevant to recent news: Adri and Helene scream into the void about the Wall Street Journal's editorial piece written by Joseph Epstein where he says Dr. Jill Biden should not use the honorific she worked hard to get. You know, because of the patriarchy.

515: Big McGonagall Energy, "I'm Speaking" (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Chapter 15)12 Dec 202001:23:56

This week, we finally get to chapter 15 of OotP, "The Hogwarts High Inquisitor," in which the Ministry passes middle of the night legislative action to give one of their own, Dolores Umbridge, oversight power for an independent educational institution: Hogwarts. Of course, we find this super problematic. Also problematic? The complex nature of reporting abuse, especially within systems that aren't the most survivor-friendly ones.

For this episode's Patreon-exclusive content, we talk about the implications of what it would look like had the character of Professor Snape been written as a woman and the rest of the characters had been gendered as canon and the implications of a female professor Snape (for both readers and other characters) if the entire cast had been gender-flipped. The patriarchy, as always, is a strong presence in our discussion.

514.75: Did We Just Endorse Drarry?05 Dec 202000:37:44

Hello lovelies! The universe has once again conspired against us in recording our episode for chapter 15 of OOTP. Instead, we are releasing the Patreon-only Girl Who Lived: Draco/Darcy episode so your feed isn't quite so empty today. We want to know all your thoughts, so send us a virtual owl (an MP3 of your voice OR words are fine) us at info@acciopolitics.com, leave us a voice mail 915-996-1699, or get at us on social. You know the drill, we're @acciopolitics on twitter and instagram.

514.5: The One Where We Talk to Chris Rankin21 Nov 202001:51:29

Today’s episode isn’t about a chapter, but a character (and some other topics of interest). Actor/Director/Producer Chris Rankin, who embodied the character of Percy Weasley in the film adaptation of the Harry Potter series, graciously joined us 19 years after the filming of Sorcerer’s Stone. We get to the nitty-gritty of how Chris got into the Harry Potter series before being cast, Percy’s potential internal motivations, whether Chris ever read fanfics, how he’d like Percy’s life after the Battle of Hogwarts to look like, what Chris thinks Percy’s career ambitions were, and current politics (of course).

Patrons get exclusive interview content with Chris, including whether he has a favorite non-canon ship, what it was like having his mom teach at his high school, and whether he is his own favorite Chris, in addition to an after-interview debrief between your hosts. Want that sweet exclusive content? Support this podcast at www.patreon.com/acciopolitics

514: Why does Percy think Umbridge is Cool? (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Chapter 14)14 Nov 202001:15:46

In this episode, we talk about Percy's letter to Ron, the social pressures that the trio face (especially Harry), teenage crushes and the teenage mind, Percy's motivation and reasoning to embrace the Ministry's line of thinking rather than his own family's, and much more.

Our Patron-exclusive segment is another installment in the Girl Who Lived series: we talk about the implication and effect of a gender-flipped Draco Malfoy (both if just that character was gender-flipped, and if the entire cast of characters was gender-flipped).

Let us know your thoughts! You can e-mail us at info@acciopolitics.com or you can leave us a voice mail at our voice-mail only line at 915-996-1699. You can also DM us on social (@acciopolitics on twitter and instagram).

513: This Chapter Feels Like a Personal Attack (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Chapter 13)07 Nov 202001:10:31

This week has been a very long year. We're exhausted. Anyhow, we talk about the 2020 presidential election (is it over yet? Are we there yet, mom and dad?) and talk about the horrifying chapter that is Detention with Dolores. Patrons get a bonus segment: The Elusive Latinx Vote. How do we talk about Latinx in the US and why can't the Democratic party reach some Latinx voters?

512: Airhorns and Dolores (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Chapter 12)31 Oct 202001:15:26

It's the spookiest season of all: Presidential Election anxiety! As we all huddle under our covers binge-eating Oreos and try to collectively unclench our jaws, we talk about yet another anxiety-inducing topic: Chapter 12 of OotP. This is the one where the Trio start classes once again, the twins remain coy about their benefactor, we hear about Umbridge's pedagogical theory, and Potter has a biscuit.

This episode's Patron-exclusive content: We discuss the BADASSERY THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN if the character of Neville had been a girl.

511: Does Hogwarts Sort too Early? (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Chapter 11)24 Oct 202001:53:00

During this episode, we talk about Jeffrey Toobin's (accidental?) sexual assault/harassment via Zoom work meeting (Adri finds it implausible that work could turn someone on so much) and Dr. Fauci's plea for this election season to usher in a new president (this didn't happen, but we're reading between the lines here). Speaking of reading between the lines, we delve deeper into the politics of this chapter, with Adri focusing on the politics of legacy and history, Helene on the politics of judgment, and K. Alex with the politics of radical change. Within this scope, Helene praises Ron for the first and only time in this book (probably last time, too), K. Alex talks about Dean's blackness and Adri questions what JK has against aunts. We also read some responses we got to last week's question, Do we judge others too quickly? Consensus: YES.

733: Snape is the Worst (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Chapter 33)17 May 202301:29:46

We talk about how Snape’s redemption arc wasn’t very convincing and/or satisfying through the lens of Obsessive Love Disorder and Incel Culture.

We're coming at you with hot takes about Ginny and Hermione's treatment of Luna, as well as questioning why Harry is so worried about Cho when he's got bigger fish to fry. We also talk about the difference between intent and outcome, and whether intent justifies certain outcomes.

509: Harry Lacks Pettiness & We Aspire to That, Too (Chapter 9, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix)10 Oct 202001:18:31

On this episode, Adri, Helene, and K. Alex talk about school rivalries, Lucius Malfoy's fantastic hairdresser, Harry's mental health and emotional growth, Ron's lack of qualifications for the Prefect role (even noted Ron apologist Adri agrees), and our media picks of the week. This week, our lovely patrons get more content in this version because Adri has thoughts about men interrupting women and COVID-19 infection rates in the White House.

508 - Dumbledore's Aspirational Pettiness (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Chapter 8)03 Oct 202001:37:46
It is a truth universally acknowledged that all our hosts aspire to levels of petty displayed by one Albus Dumbledore in this chapter of OoTP. As Harry faces trial by the Wizengamot led by one very insecure Minister of Magic who just wants people to let him have power in peace even as the Wizarding World is shifting due to Voldy's return, Professor Dumbledore sweeps in and gives the Minister of Magic a master class on shade and how to manipulate the law to suit his needs.   Support us on Patreon: www.patreon.com/acciopolitics
Screaming into the Void: 2020 Hellscape Edition16 Jun 202002:31:12
Adri and Helene scream into the void once again (for two and a half hours), thanks to JK Rowling's twitter and recent/current events shaping the dystopic YA novel no one asked for and that we're currently inhabiting (seriously, at least most of those had a juicy love triangle, can someone tell me that they've been embroiled in a juicy love triangle during this time? Because if so, please dm me. I love gossip. Find me on twitter @ananabanana). In this non-traditional episode of our little podcast, we talk about:   1. Judgemental Karen Rowling's Transphobia, why the arguments in her essay hold no merit, responses to her statement, the danger of her transphobic views, and we answer some questions we got on twitter.    2. Defund the Police - what that means, and spoiler alert, it's not what your Fox News aunts and uncles think it means. This also includes a discussion on the importance of Black Lives Matter and how social structures further discourage equity in our communities.   3. Media we've been consuming in this hellscape of a year.   Check out our website www.acciopolitics.com for a list of resources on Black Lives Matter.
507: The Politics of Government (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Chapter 7)28 May 202000:55:29

We're back and we get our first glimpse at the Ministry of Magic! What secrets does the Ministry hold and why is Arthur Weasley's office so small?

506 - The Politics of Legacy (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Chapter 6)09 Apr 202001:16:43

Join Adri and Helene as they talk about the Politics of Legacy, what legacy means to each of them, and how it informs how we view characters in the series and how legacy shifts how they think about themselves and each other.

Here's the drawbridge exercise Adri alludes to when it comes to unmasking biases https://carterclasschs.weebly.com/drawbridge-exercise.html

505: The Politics of Access to Knowledge (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Chapter 5)15 Feb 202000:52:15

This episode was a wild one to edit because Julianna's microphone decided to act as if it was in some sort of cave! If you've ever tried to edit audio, you would know that taking echo out of audio is a BEAST of a feat. I'm not quite sure I succeeded in this, but never fear, episode 506 will be out on Monday to make sure our schedule is back on track!

504: The Politics of Secrets (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Chapter 4)30 Jan 202000:42:31

Julianna and Adri talk about the politics of secrecy and how secrets can be manifestations of people's power over each other. Secrets can shut people out from obtaining power because knowledge is something that can be wielded against someone. Conversely, limited sharing of information can persuade someone to take actions against their own self-interest.

Last week's guest Aureo joins Adri to talk about Harry Potter and politics in this off-chapter conversation. See you next week!

436: The Politics of the Wizarding Justice System (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Chapter 36)26 Sep 201900:37:04

Seth, the most reluctant of readers, joins me in talking about chapter 36, "The Parting of the Ways," of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. We talk about wizarding justice *insert Law & Order sound* and how Cornelius (Bob) Fudge is the absolute woooooorst. We also talk about grassroot resistance and Dumbledore.

731: The Battle of Hogwarts (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Chapter 31)10 May 202301:25:22

This is the one where Voldemort gives everyone at Hogwarts the choice to deliver Harry to him before midnight otherwise the Death Eaters will attack the school. Only Pansy Parkinson seems to think this is a good idea so everyone braces to fight while Harry still struggles to determine where to find Ravenclaw’s Diadem. With Ron and Hermione nowhere to be found, he tracks down the hiding place but runs into a number of old friends on the way who have joined to help fight. Harry reunites with Ron and Hermione and they head toward the Room of Requirement where they are confronted by Draco, Crabbe, and Goyle. Crabbe casts a Fiendfyre curse and the room goes up in flames but Harry decides to save Draco and Goyle before they escape with the Diadem. The sixth Horcrux is destroyed and they start planning their next steps when they run into Fred and Percy. The group is attacked by Death Eaters, and they find Fred’s body in the wreckage.

We don't have enough Hufflepuff representation on this show, so Helene Karp joins me to talk about the most un-Hufflepuff thing we could gather: Violence. Well, that and Sacrifice. This small little chapter in the Potter series is jam-packed with the intersection between Violence and Sacrifice. It made us think about gun culture, the military, and abortion bans. What do all these things have in common and how do they relate to Harry, Wormtail, Cedric, and Voldemort? Give this episode a listen and find out!

430: The Politics of Memory (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Chapter 30)25 Jul 201901:43:35

Fellow Gryffindor, Madison Ford from MuggleNet's Beyond the Veil Podcast joins me to talk about the place memory has in our politics (and in the Wizarding World's politics, of course). We talk about how the first step of indoctrination is ensuring the history we teach in schools, muggle and wizard alike, reflects the truths that those in power want us to absorb so that we cannot threaten their power with rebellion. That, however, is just the big picture of memory and the history we learn. Memory is something we should all have agency over, which is why emotional abusers often seek to rewrite our memories in order to control us, much like schools try to erase the memory of the reasons behind the Civil War. Memory, or a tale that we are told, is how we connect to the world and understand how it shapes around us, and how we relate to our reality. Madison and I also discuss the links between White Supremacy and Wizard Supremacy, and how Barty Crouch may not wholly reject the ideas of Wizard Supremacy, but the execution of those ideas by Voldemort and his followers (because he's about the law, and not morals).

429: The Politics of Reputation (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Chapter 29)18 Jul 201901:00:12

The funniest Ravenclaw I know, Alex DeGraw, joins me to talk about the politics of reputation on chapter 29, "The Dream," of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. We talk about how reputation is subjective and not based on the actual truth of what's in people's hearts, and even how sometimes reputation is also linked to prejudice (aka Fudge is the wooorst). We deviate and talk Sean Biggerstaff, closets, and eclectic passwords, so give this episode a listen to find out what they all have in common!

Information is a form of currency. If it weren't, then there wouldn't be such concern around our social security numbers being hacked, right? On this episode, Sam Mattos (@dontpanicllama) from the Me vs You Podcast (@mevsyoupodcast) joins me to talk about information, Justin and Britney's denim days, astrological placements, Ron's take on information, Rita Skeeter, Victor Krum, and Ludo Bagman. We also talked about how Molly Weasley reads Witch Weekly "just for the recipes, thanks" and how that is misleading as hell.

427.75: LIVE from the Leviosa Convention! - Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts: A Roadmap to Community Organizing and Resistance04 Jul 201900:43:38

This episode was recorded at my panel at the Leviosa Convention! I loved being able to present and engage in conversations with fans of all ages. I based my discussion on the book Emergent Strategy: Shaping Change, Changing Worlds by adrienne maree brown. The book highlights the strategies that are useful for grassroots/community organizing, which is very much applicable to the Wizarding World.

Here's a description of my Leviosa Panel: Both the Harry Potter Series and the Fantastic Beasts franchise spotlight characters who work outside the law and organize in their communities to counter the rise in extremism and intolerance. This panel will examine community organizing and resistance in the Wizarding World and how we can use that example to organize in our communities, operate inside or outside the law, and resist the both sides fallacy.

427: The Politics of the Patriarchy (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Chapter 27)21 Jun 201901:50:34

This is a re-release! I just found out the other file had absolutely no sound, so I uploaded the Patron-exclusive episode. Delete the previous file from your podcast app, please and thank you! On this episode, Liz Whitaker (@waitaduneminute) and I talk about the politics of the patriarchy. Unsurprisingly, this is a very rich topic that makes us think of what happens in the series, in this chapter, in politics, and in our personal and professional lives. We talk about Ron's dismissal of Hermione, Barty Crouch's tough on crime stance, and how Rita Skeeter perpetuates the Patriarchy for her own financial and professional gain.

730: Politics of Mobilization and Guardianship (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Chapter 30)27 Apr 202300:55:24

This is the one where, after alerting Voldemort to Harry’s presence, Luna stuns Alecto Carrow only for her brother Amycus to show up along with McGonagall. Harry ends up casting the Cruciatus curse on Amycus after he spits in McGonagall’s face, and after subduing them both Harry gets the chance to tell McGonagall what’s going on. She has a run-in with Snape which ends with him jumping out of the window to escape, and then she rounds up the rest of the heads of Houses to protect the school and get everyone to safety. Harry returns to the Room of Requirement to see that the Order has shown up to help fight. Everyone starts heading to the Great Hall to prepare for battle but Harry and the Weasley family stay behind. While Ginny is fighting with her family to stay and fight, Percy shows up and apologizes for everything he’s done. They reconcile and just as they’re about to join the rest of the school, Harry sees that Voldemort has finally arrived at Hogwarts.

The sweetest Hufflepuff in the land, Dr. Alysa Lucas of the Best Forevers podcast and Fataliteas podcast, joins me to talk about the Politics of Suspicion in this very suspicious chapter of GoF. We also sort Veronica Mars characters, talk about envy, and which characters may or may not need therapy to overcome their suspicious ways. Also, does Harry need a backpack to solve all his problems?

424: The Politics of Legacy (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Chapter 24)23 May 201901:14:31

Courtney from the Cult of Domesticity Podcast and I cover the politics of Legacy as it pertains to Harry, Draco, and Hagrid. We ask ourselves what it would be like to live up to the legacy of parents you didn't even meet, deeds you don't remember performing, and the pressure of being the chosen one. We also talk about how certain characters lean into their familial legacy a little too much, and how Rita Skeeter's legacy is basically being the embodiment of the Daily Mail.
