37. Empowering Birth Stories!25 Jun 202401:15:33

What do you think of when you hear the word labor? If you’re anything like me, your first associations are probably horrible  scenes out of a movie with women screaming in pain. If you have scary associations with labor, it makes sense! That’s all that most of us have heard. But what if it isn’t necessarily true?

In this special solo episode, I share my two birth stories, which were the most beautiful, empowering, embodied experiences of my life!

Listen in to hear me share:

  • Why my deep fear of needles pushed me to look into natural births
  • How conventional birth practices in the west have put doctors before mothers
  • Why feeling safe and empowered during birth can speed up labor and prevent complications
  • The resources that best supported me in having a natural, unmedicated birth
  • Both of my labor stories (and how my son was born in less than 2 hours)
  • How my birth stories helped me heal the distrust I developed with my body through infertility
  • And so much more!

25. 3 Ways Guilt Is Holding You Back In Your Health26 Mar 202401:00:22

One of the most common blocks I see holding women back from taking care of their health is guilt. Even though we know logically that we need to put our own oxygen mask on first, and that taking care of ourselves is what allows us to take care of others, I see so many women struggling with feeling guilty when it comes to really taking the time, energy, money, and effort to take care of themselves.

Listen in to this episode to hear me share:

  • My own personal experience with feeling guilty about taking care of my health
  • Three underlying ways that guilt is holding you back from taking care of your health
  • Why it’s not your job to make other people feel comfortable when it comes to the way you eat
  • How to move past the guilt so you can start taking care of yourself in the way you deserve
  • And so much more

9. Nine Months in, Nine months out: My Postpartum Journey05 Dec 202300:52:03

The postpartum experience is wild. There are so many changes that happen so quickly- going through labor, having a new human to take care of, recovering from birth, feeding the baby, all while your body has been completely changed from experiencing pregnancy and birth. This was my second time giving birth and being postpartum, but the first time I really struggled with my body image, which felt shocking, confusing, and disappointing to me. I thought I was unaffected by diet culture, and my postpartum experience really busted that myth. I realized just how deeply diet culture is embedded into our brains and how it manifested during my postpartum experience. This episode details my postpartum struggle to love and accept my new body as a mom of two and hopefully will give you some tips and insights if you’re in the same boat.

Listen in to hear me share:

  • How I struggled to gain enough weight in my first pregnancy and my baby was diagnosed with IUGR (intrauterine growth retardation)
  • How I ate really differently in my second pregnancy and gained 50 lbs
  • How I struggled with thoughts around dieting and not feeling like myself after giving birth
  • My struggle to accept my postpartum bump when I had been totally fine with the baby bump while pregnant
  • How women of all shapes and sizes are susceptible to the dangerous messaging of diet culture
  • Why I ditched my postpartum workout program
  • What I actually focused on for recovery during my postpartum period
  • How I work on my relationship with my body and make sure that the foundation of that relationship isn’t based on how big or small it is or how it looks in the mirror
  • + so much more

45. Pulling Back the Curtain On The Food Industry20 Aug 202401:04:37

In this episode, I’m giving you a little history lesson and a deep dive into the development of our modern food industry and the USA nutrition guidelines. It’s probably no surprise that the nutrition advice and the food pyramid we learned about growing up hasn’t really set Americans up to achieve better health results (if anything, rates of heart disease and diabetes have only gone up…) but so much of this misguided nutrition information has made its way into schools, doctors offices, magazines, and social media, creating lots of confusion around what will actually make us healthier. I hope after listening to this episode you’ll be motivated to learn more about how food actually impacts your body, and think twice next time you hear that too much real food like eggs can raise your cholesterol levels while a bowl of honey nut cheerios promises to lower your cholesterol and build a healthy heart!

Listen in to hear me share:

  • The research (and the scientist) that started the low fat diet craze
  • How the US government started to back the low fat movement in hopes of reducing heart disease
  • How the food industry started adding sugar to foods when they took out the fat
  • What actually happens to women when they start going low fat
  • How laws around food labels changed in the 1970’s to make highly processed food labels less transparent
  • The myths around the mediterranean diet
  • Why you should questioning conventional nutrition advice
  • The influence of big food companies
  • The confusion of intuitive eating in this world filled with confusing nutrition advice
