Happy 2nd Anniversary to the A World of Difference Podcast Community! You are a gift to this community and to the world around you. It has been a beautiful 2 years of growing and learning together. Thank you for listening and engaging with our episodes!
Lori was recently asked by podcast host Dr. Stephan Neff, after being a guest on his podcast, to give 10 points in 10 minutes that she might share with someone such as at an airport waiting for a flight. Since many of you are flying right now, and traveling on trains, in cars and on buses, this was an opportunity for Lori to share her 10 points. She is offering it here as a gift to you on this 2nd anniversary. Mostly, though, we wanted it to spur on your creative juices for your own 10 points. How about we give gifts to each other by sharing our own 10 points. What would you say to someone if you had 10 minutes to share 10 life tips?
So, hop on over to our A World of Difference podcast community group on Facebook, or add to the comments on our Instagram, Facebook and Twitter pages to share your 10 points with the rest of our community. We love to hear your perspectives!

| Wellness: Dr. Chuck DeGroat (Rebroadcast) on When Narcissism Comes To Church, Pastors Who Abuse, How Elder Boards Can Recognize Ingratiation, and The Many Sides of a Narcissist | 06 Jul 2022 | 01:11:02 | |
In light of recent events with elder boards making decisions on allegations of abuse by pastors, a rebroadcast on one of our more popular and requested guests, Dr. Chuck DeGroat, seemed timely. Dr. Chuck DeGroat is Professor of Counseling and Christian Spirituality and Interim D.Min. Director at Western Theological Seminary and faculty member for the Soul Care Institute.
He is an author, speaker, consultant, and therapist.
He is a Minister of Word and Sacrament in the Reformed Church in America. He pastored in Orlando and San Francisco before transitioning to training and forming pastors. His experience includes training clergy in issues of abuse and trauma, pastor and planter assessments, church consultations, and investigations of abuse among pastors and within congregations. He has been featured on The Rise and Fall of Mars Hill podcast by Mike Cosper at Christianity Today in regards to the abuse of staff by pastor Marc Driscoll.
Chuck has been married to Sara for 27 years, and has two adult daughters.
He is the author of:
When Narcissism Comes to Church: Healing Your Community from Emotional and Spiritual Abuse
Leaving Egypt: Finding God in Wilderness Places
Wholeheartedness: Busyness, Exhaustion and Healing the Divided Self,
Toughest People to Love: How to Understand, Lead, and Love the Difficult People in Your Life -- Including Yourself.
Follow Dr. DeGroat's work on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter
*Several books are mentioned in this podcast that help in learning to discern the patterns of pastors who bully, intimidate and coerce their staff when it is not easy to see from the outside and is not something everyone on staff experiences.
(If you are on a church elder board, or a church hiring committee, I highly recommend these books):
A Church Called TOV: Forming a Goodness Culture That Resists Abuses of Power and Promotes Healing by Dr. Scot McKnight and Laura Barringer
Something's Not Right: Decoding the Hidden Tactics of Abuse and Freeing Yourself From Its Power by Wade Mullen
Redeeming Power: Understanding Authority and Abuse in the Church by Dr. Diane Langberg

As we finish out Autism Awareness Month and begin Mental Health Awareness Month, many are feasting for Eid at the end of Ramadan. All Star Wars friends are hoping May the 4th will be with you, and yet we do not want to forget that Mother's Day is just around the corner. Mothers who work outside the home and do both paid and unpaid work really face impossible challenges toward wellness. However, there is hope.
As we begin our Wellness series, we have a guest on this episode who will remind us to be kind to ourselves, and give us practical tools that don't overwhelm us in the process.
Rebekah Jackson is a certified independent health coach and a business coach to other health coaches. She lost over 25 pounds in her health journey and has gained changes in her overall mindset in learning to live in long term optimal health and habits. From someone who used to believe that “running off the food” would make a difference to learning to fuel her body, mind, and spirit, she has learned that the journey to health is just that… a journey.
Rebekah has coached over 100 people in the last year in their own health journey as they have pursued optimal health one healthy habit at a time and leads a team of 7 coaches in their businesses in caring for others and supporting them in their journey.
Rebekah is also a licensed/certified occupational therapist and loves to incorporate this into her health coaching in order to support others in reaching and achieving the goals they never thought possible and enjoying the “habits and hobbies” that bring them joy.

| Belonging: Corey Nathan on Growing Up Jewish, Finding Jesus, Celebrating Passover & Easter and How to Have Civil Civic Discourse Around Politics | 13 Apr 2022 | 01:10:26 | |
Corey Nathan, host of the podcast Talkin‘ Politics & Religion Without Killin‘ Each Other! is on the show this week talking about, you guessed it, politics and religion. Buckle up because this conversation goes deep fast.
Corey Nathan was raised in an observant Jewish household attending an Orthodox synagogue. His family is mostly from Brooklyn, NY; but Corey grew up on the Jersey side - Bruce Springsteen country! In his late 20s, much to the family's chagrin, Corey became a Born-again Christian. Not long after this epiphany, however, the new believer began to find many of the prevailing social and political positions of contemporary American Evangelicalism to be at odds with the very Scriptures that are supposed to be Christians’ authority for how to engage in the world.
Vocationally, Corey started out as a stockbroker (Series 7, Series 63) during the day while he was studying at a theatre conservatory at night. Since then, he’s been an entrepreneur with one foot in business and one foot in creative pursuits having built and managed such endeavors as:
- a specialty headhunting firm
- a theatre and film ministry
- a residential and commercial service company
- a 501c3 to help folks during the pandemic
- and most recently a new media/content company.
Avocationally, Corey continues to be a student of theology, politics and culture and enjoys sharing invigorating conversations with world-renowned experts of these subjects on the podcast he produces and hosts, Talkin’ Politics & Religion Without Killin’ Each Other. He can also be caught having these same kinds of discussions with friends and family over a good whiskey or glass of wine with the music of Monk, Coltrane or Louis Armstrong setting the mood.
Corey has been married to Lisa for almost 25 years and has 3 kids, Savannah (21), Jackie-boy (18) and Emerson (17) along with the family pooches, Bailey and Charles Mingus the 3rd. As for rumors of his exploits in the world of Texas Holdem Poker, we can neither confirm nor deny those reports.

| Belonging: Kristin Henning on The Rage of Innocence: How America Criminalizes Black Youth, Her Work as a Georgetown Law Professor, and Why Juveniles Are Stereotyped From Just the Word Itself | 06 Apr 2022 | 01:09:13 | |
A nationally recognized writer, trainer, and consultant in juvenile justice reform, Kristin Henning speaks on the intersection of race, adolescence, and policing. Her book, The Rage of Innocence, is a powerful analysis of how the legal system criminalizes normal adolescent behavior in communities of color. In it, she lays bare the long-term consequences of racism and trauma that Black children experience at the hands of police (and their vigilante surrogates) and explains how discriminatory and aggressive policing has socialized a generation of Black teenagers to fear and resent the police. In her lectures and workshops, Henning examines how normal adolescent behaviors are distorted into crime and deviance among Black youth, who are denied the grace and tolerance society extends to their white peers. Drawing upon her experience working in D.C.’s juvenile courts, she examines the physical and psychological harms of constant discriminatory and aggressive police surveillance during adolescence – the last period of significant flexibility in the brain – and discusses the devastating long-term consequences criminalization has on the development of Black youth.
In her timely and essential workshops, Kristin Henning helps organizations identify unconscious racial bias and challenge racial injustice and inequality. In her educational and dynamic talks, she discusses the challenges she encountered in her legal career and the need for police, prosecutors, and judges to examine their personal biases and combat them in favor of equitable treatment.
Kristin Henning is the Blume Professor of Law and Director of the Juvenile Justice Clinic and Initiative at Georgetown Law, where she teaches students about criminal law, family law, and racial bias in the juvenile and criminal legal systems. Before joining Georgetown University, she worked as a public defender, where she organized and led a juvenile unit representing children arrested in the Washington D.C. area. She is currently the Director of the Mid-Atlantic Juvenile Defender Center and serves on the Board of Directors for the Center for Children’s Law and Policy. Henning received her B.A. from Duke University and J.D. from Yale University. She has received numerous awards for commitment to justice, including the 2021 Juvenile Leadership Prize from the Juvenile Law Center, the 2015 Award for Youth Justice from the DC Lawyers for Youth and 2013 Robert E. Shepherd, Jr. Award for Excellence in Juvenile Defense by the National Juvenile Defender Center.

| Belonging: Catherine McNeil on Fearing Bravely: Risking Love for Our Neighbors, Strangers, and Enemies | 23 Feb 2022 | 01:02:28 | |
Catherine McNiel writes about the creative and redemptive work of God in our real, ordinary lives. Her upcoming book, Fearing Bravely: Risking Love for Our Neighbors, Strangers, and Enemies, just released from NavPress in February 2022. Catherine studies theology while caring for three kids, two jobs, and one enormous garden. If Jesus commands Christians to love their neighbors, why are so many North American Christians taught to fear their neighbors? The US church is known as a people who are afraid, who have been nurtured through fear into hatred, and who have moved from hatred to violence—or at least to neglect. This fear, too often lived out boldly in the name of Jesus, is a false religion.
If God instructs Christians to welcome strangers, why are so many US Christians ignoring the scriptural commands that say not to withhold hospitality or help from anyone in need? So why do we fear strangers, especially those needing hospitality, afraid that their presence may threaten what we have?
If Jesus taught all of His followers to love their enemies, why aren't more North American Christians regularly praying and hearing sermons about how to pray for those who actively harm them? Instead, many church-goers in this polarized context, create enemies in their minds, seeing anyone who thinks, believes, looks, or lives differently from North American Christians as dangerous, a threat to their way of living.
The Christian community exists to declare and demonstrate God’s love and to follow Jesus in practicing love over fear, even in unsafe times and places. It’s time to call all people of faith to reclaim our brave fear of God and risk transformative love for the sake of our neighbors, the strangers among us, and our enemies.
Christians are to be people of God's Kingdom, which is a place of flourishing and belonging where all nations, races, tribes and languages are welcome. Fearing Bravely teaches us that we have nothing to fear. Instead, we can respond to our fear problem with a brave love that emerges from choosing to let our fear and awe of God overcome our fear of everything else.
Catherine McNiel writes with conviction, wisely guiding us to recognize our fear and, with God's help, not let it limit us to love courageously all who are among us.

Martine partners with global professionals to implement learning and workforce development strategies and solutions incorporating race and biases, manager training, and inter/intra department communication. Her soft skills curriculum is popular with late-stage startups experiencing pangs due to a merger, an acquisition, exponential growth, or a sudden reduction in business.
A passionate DE&I consultant, Martine has written for publications like Huffington Post and has delivered a TEDx talk on immigration policies as they relate to equity and inclusion. She’s also appeared on C-span.
Outside of her work, Martine contributes thought leadership around immigration reform. She’s spoken at Senator McCain’s 2006 Town Hall Rally on Immigration and the U.S. House of Representative’s Judiciary Subcommittee’s 2007 hearing on Immigration Reform. Her story has appeared in USA Today, Metro New York, and The New York Sun. Martine is also the founder and executive director of Stateless and Dreamers Foundation (SAD), which she created after her seven-year battle with the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which eventually led to her U.S. citizenship. SAD provides guidance and practical tools that stateless persons and undocumented immigrants can use to navigate between lawyers and the courts more effectively.

| Best of 2021: Sheila Wray Gregoire: The Lies You've Been Taught and How to Recover What God Intended | 16 Jan 2022 | 01:08:34 | |
Sheila Wray Gregoire is a popular speaker, marriage blogger, and the author of nine books, including The Good Girl’s Guide to Great Sex. Her latest book is The Great Sex Rescue that will be coming out in early March. It is based on the largest survey ever done of Christian women. She surveyed 20,000 women for this book, and we get to hear some of the results of that survey on this podcast.
Sheila loves encouraging women in their relationships, both with God and with their husbands, children, and friends. Her passion is for marriage, and she and her husband Keith speak together at marriage outreaches and at FamilyLife Canada marriage conferences. Sheila believes in authenticity, and gives real solutions to the very real and messy problems women, and couples, can face. You can usually find her in Belleville, Ontario, where she’s constantly texting her two young married daughters and knitting. Preferably simultaneously.
She blogs at: tolovehonorandvacuum.com where you can also find her resources that she has written and produced. You can find the rubric she mentioned here, and a place to pre-order her latest book The Great Sex Rescue: https://tolovehonorandvacuum.com/gsr-rubric/
She has resources to help parents have the sex talk with their kids ages 10-16 in her video curriculum The Whole Story, which has a boy version and a girl version that you can use on a weekend away with your son or daughter. It is free from purity culture and statements that make girls and boys feel ashamed and trapped in ways some other curriculums have, and it makes it easy to talk about sex with you kid because the videos say the parts that are hard to talk about so you can watch with them. Has she done us a great favor here or what? She even gives us advice on how to talk with our daughters about her first period in a way that's not creepy.
Have a listen today, and pass this episode on to anyone that may need to hear it. Sheila is a resource to get us to talk about sex in a healthy way.

| Best of 2021: Dr. Scot McKnight & Laura Barringer on A Church Called TOV: Forming a Goodness Culture that Resists Abuses of Power and Promotes Healing | 10 Jan 2022 | 01:14:13 | |
This episode is coming to you for such a time as this. With spiritual abuse, abuse of power, and sexual abuse becoming such common news in our time, we have to admit that there are many churches with cultures and systems that are unhealthy and even harmful. If you are a pastor, a church leader, a congregant or just want to be a part of making a difference in a way that helps others flourish, listen in closely to the research and the harsh reality of what is happening on our watch. There is hope of how to do better, and how to be a part of creating goodness cultures together. Our guests today are a father and daughter co-author duo who walked through a painful reality at Willow Creek church in Chicago, and that experience led them to want to help others.
Dr. Scot McKnight is a world-renowned speaker, writer, professor and equipper of the Church. He is a recognized authority on the historical Jesus, early Christianity, and the New Testament. His blog, Jesus Creed, is a leading Christian blog. Dr. McKnight’s books include The Jesus Creed, The King Jesus Gospel, The Blue Parakeet, The Real Mary, and Junia is Not Alone. A sought after speaker, he has been interviewed on several radio and television programs as well as spoken at numerous local churches, conferences, colleges, and seminaries in the United States and around the world. Scot McKnight is a member of the Society of Biblical Literature and the Society for New Testament Studies. McKnight’s books have been translated into Chinese, Korean, Russian, and Portuguese.
You can find him, along with the other 50.5K followers on twitter at: @scotmcknight
Laura Barringer is a teacher of primary-grade students. She is the co-author of Sharing God's Love: The Jesus Creed for Children and wrote a teacher lesson and activity guide to accompany the book. She is also co-author of A Church Called Tov: Forming a Goodness Culture That Resists Abuses of Power and Promotes Healing. Laura is a graduate of Wheaton College (IL) and currently resides in the Chicago suburbs with her husband, Mark, and three beagles.
You can find her on twitter at: @laurambarringer
Buy their book and highlight it as many times as I did, because A Church Called TOV: Forming a Goodness Culture That Resists Abuses of Power and Promotes Healing, will likely be, outside of the Bible, the most important book you read this year. Let's be TOV and create TOV systems and TOV churches together so we can all flourish.

| Change Makers EPS 63: Christina Corpus on Running as the First Female Candidate for Sheriff in San Mateo, California, Being a Latina Police Officer, and Her Insider's Perspective on #DefundthePolice | 08 Dec 2021 | 01:00:56 | |
Christina Corpus, candidate for San Mateo County Sheriff 2022. Christina is the first female candidate to run for Sheriff in San Mateo County. Christina is currently the Chief of Police services for the City of Millbrae.
If elected in June, 2022, she will be the first Latina Sheriff in the state of California.
Christina Corpus is the daughter of immigrants from Nicaragua and Mexico. She was born and raised in the Bay Area, where she has lived her entire life. Growing up, her mother instilled in her a strong work ethic, and she has been working since she was sixteen years old. As she entered adulthood, she was drawn to public service. She began her career with San Mateo County as a caseworker with the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office in 1995.
Serving the public was a rewarding experience and Christina quickly realized that law enforcement was how she wished to grow as a professional and inspire young women that looked like her. She applied to the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office and was hired as a Correctional Officer in 2002. She was quickly promoted to Deputy Sheriff and worked primarily in the North Fair Oaks area, a predominantly Latino community. There, Christina met her husband, John, who is also a law enforcement officer for the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office.
Over her decades-long career at the Sheriff’s Office, Christina has served in the Corrections Division, Professional Standards, and the Operations Division. Most of her career has been heavily involved with community policing, first as a Deputy, and then as the Director of the Sheriff’s Office Community Alliance to Revitalize our Neighborhood. After she was promoted to Sergeant, she returned to Community Policing as a supervisor. As she advanced in her career, Christina realized she wanted to deepen her understanding of law enforcement with more education. This drive led Christina to enroll in Union Institute and University, where she completed a bachelor’s degree in Law Enforcement Leadership.
After being promoted to Sergeant and serving as Community Policing Supervisor, Christina was promoted to Lieutenant and oversaw the entire Community Policing Bureau. She later became the Commander of Bayside Patrol and managed the Community Policing Unit, the School Resource Unit, Field Training Unit, K-9 Unit, Motor Unit, and the Sheriff’s Activities League program. When she was promoted to Captain, she continued to oversee the Bayside Patrol Bureau. Recently, she became Chief of Police Services for the City of Millbrae.
Christina has always taken pride in being a problem solver. Throughout her career, she has championed several innovative programs to re-imagine modern law enforcement in San Mateo County:

| Change Makers EPS 61: Allan "Alonzo" Wind on Andean Adventures, USAID, the Peace Corps, and his work with CARE and Plan International in Peru, Nicaragua, Angola, Nigeria, Iraq, Afghanistan, South Africa, Ecuador, Bolivia, the Dominican Republic and | 24 Nov 2021 | 00:52:14 | |
Allan J. "Alonzo" Wind is a retired Senior Foreign Service Officer from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), having worked off and on with the Agency primarily overseas on diplomatic assignments from 1990 to 2019 in the Peru, Nicaragua, Angola, Nigeria, Iraq, Afghanistan and South Africa and the Southern Africa Regional Missions. In these roles he provided oversight to U.S. government foreign aid development and humanitarian assistance and supported U.S. Ambassadors as their senior development officer on multiple U.S. Embassy Country Teams. In South Africa he helped establish the Southern Africa Regional Leadership Center as part of President Obama’s Young African Leadership Initiative, and contributed to other youth development efforts and business incubators.
He previously worked as the Global Programme Coordinator for the International Save the Children Alliance Secretariat and as a Country Director and Health Sector Coordinator for different nonprofit private voluntary organizations including CARE and PLAN International in a range of countries including Ecuador, Bolivia, the Dominican Republic and the United Kingdom.
Mr. Wind began his career as a Rural Public Health U.S. Peace Corps Volunteer in Ecuador from 1980-1982, where he was widely known as “Doctor Alonzo.” The Alonzo nickname stuck throughout life in many countries in Latin America, Africa and Asia.
He graduated from the University of Chicago. He is originally a New Yorker, and as a high schooler he was a “subway rat” attending the famous Stuyvesant High School in Manhattan. There he studied creative writing for two years with his teacher, the famous Irish American writer Frank McCourt. He has always been an avid science fiction fan and sometime writer, and notes that writing science fiction and creative writing under Frank was invaluable for future U.S. government work.
He and his wife currently reside in Fairfax County Virginia, while their adult daughter is in Africa on her own adventures. Mr. Wind serves on the Boards of Directors of different non-governmental organizations, including Hunger Relief International, supporting the efforts to help the neediest in Guatemala and Haiti, any way he can.
His memoir is Andean Adventures
