This week we dive into the intricate world of Gueuze—a complex and traditional Belgian beer. We'll cover everything from the meticulous cork removal process to the distinct appearances, aromas, and flavours of their chosen versions. Together, they compare the carbonation, foam, and colour of their drinks, and explore the layers of tartness, dryness, and fruity funk that make these beers so unique.

We will also take you through the fascinating history of Gueuze, the specific serving temperatures, and the traditional glassware that enhance the drinking experience. You'll hear about their adventures finding Lambic baskets, the artistry behind the brewing process, and the fascinating revival of traditional beer styles in Belgium.

197 - Lager Series: Dortmunder Export

Our lager series continues this week with the lesser known Dortmunder Export. We have examples from Lost & Grounded, Exhale and Culmination Brewing and take you through what you should expect from this classic style.

We won't just stop with the tasting notes, though. We’ll also be your guides through the optimal glassware and serving temperatures to ensure you get the best out of each pour and possible food pairing options. We trace the historical roots of the DAB Brewery, unfolding its journey through the technological revolution of refrigeration in the late 19th century, its resilience post-World War II, and its eventual mergers with prominent brewing groups. We'll delve into how Dortmunder Export became a significant component of German beer sales and the intriguing sulfuric notes that define this beer style.

As is our way, we take a few detours during this episode – look out for talk about Bristol, St Patricks Day and international supermarkets!

Back in episode 67 we talked you through barley wines. These strong ales were brewed to be stored and aged and modern brewers are doing interesting things with them. This week we take a look at NOT barley wines!

Close relative to the barley wine is the wheat, oat and rye wine and we sample an example of each. How do the different grains change this beer style? Why would brewers use these alternative grains and which do we like best?

In the next episode of our UK Brave Noise round up we chat to Vendy from Vault City about their Brave Noise brew. In true Vault City fashion they brewed a twist on the recipe creating a pineapple sour pale. It stays true to both the brewery and Brave Noise while still being refreshing, accessible and making a noise for awareness – exactly what we need!

Vendy talks about her experience of brewing the beer and her time at Vault City who are an excellent example of how breweries can get involved with Brave Noise.

101 - Dessert Beers

Welcome to A Woman’s Brew, where women talk about beer!

Coming down from our 100thepisode, we decided to continue the celebration with some cake!

We bring to you dessert beers! These are not for the ‘beer should taste like beer’ crowd as they definitely taste of other things. We compare Yonder & Vault City’s carrot cake sours and try them against actual carrot cake. Then we continue with Vault and try their collaboration beers with S43 – white chocolate raspberry cheesecake sour and cherry cheesecake imperial stout – but does it actually taste like the cheesecakes on our plates?
