How To Skilfully Avoid Answering Uncomfortable Questions: Ros Atkins26 Feb 202500:05:09
I have worked with some brilliant broadcasters who are masters at answering questions in such a way as to deftly move the conversation onto safe territory - even when it means not directly answering the question they were asked. This is a vital skill in live broadcasting, but it can be transferred to any other line of work or area of life. Overcome burnout and develop resilience - by doing nothing: Steve Magness31 Jan 202500:08:11
“All of humanity's problems stem from man's inability to sit quietly in a room alone” - Blaise Pascal. Rates of burnout and overwhelm are soaring and yet the advice tends to be push harder and exercise more. For people struggling with burnout this can lead to illness and a crash. On the contrary, we need to embrace stillness and simply being. Doing nothing is not easy for most people, yet it is what our nervous system's are crying out for, and it is the path to developing true resilience. 🔗 My Free course on beating burnout and finding flow for peak performance is here: https://www.simonmundie.com/beat-burnout-mini-course Website: simonmundie.com YouTube: https://tinyurl.com/YouTubeSimonMundie Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/simonmundie/ Substack Newsletter: https://simonmundie.substack.com/ The paperback edition of my book, Champion Thinking: Get Out of Your Own Way, Find Your Peak Performance, is now available. Booze, sex, social media - what's your poison? Taking the time to consider when we have an unhealthy relationship with 'people, places, things and situations' is an extremely valuable process to go through. Former England and Arsenal footballer Tony Adams set up the Sporting Chance clinic, and is an expert at the process people gripped by addiction of any kind can go through to find freedom. He talks about sitting with uncomfortable feelings, puncturing ego - as well as the growing issue of social media and smartphones. The Non-Duality Podcast - 'Finding Fulfilment and Contentment Where You Are' - with Nic Higham & Simon Mundie26 Feb 202400:50:35
Why fulfilment is about releasing our attachment to becoming and recognising Being When we become a champion, we simultaneously become a 'somebody'. In this conversation, recorded on The Non-Duality Podcast with Nic Higham, we explore some of the questionable assumptions lying behind what is a widespread belief. How can 'success' and self-aggrandisation be frequently unfulfilling and empty, while the absence of that deep-rooted sense of 'me' be so rich? What are some of the implications of exploring this for how we understand reality and the human experience? Nic Higham offers nonduality-informed counselling and coaching and is the presenter of ‘The Nonduality Podcast’. https://thewholenessofexperience.com Champion Thinking: How To Find Success Without Losing Yourself - is now on general release. How to use language to influence behaviour: Dave Alred - elite performance coach23 Feb 202400:11:14
Words can be extremely powerful tools, if used skillfully. Dave Alred, one of the most in-demand performance coaches in the world even goes so far as to say "language is the post powerful drug known to man". However, he argues that most people are not aware of this and as a result don't see the sort of results that could be possible if only they were able to adopt a few simple principles. This is especially true when it comes to influencing how other people behave. Champion Thinking: How To Find Success Without Losing Yourself - is now on general release. Conscious Relationships19 Feb 202400:37:12
"If I accept the fact that my relationships are here to make me conscious, instead of happy, then my relationships become a wonderful self mastery tool that keeps realigning me with my higher purpose for living."– Eckhart Tolle This is one of my favourite quotes, although it isn’t necessarily in line with how most people view relationships. We tend to be conditioned with an idea about meeting ‘the one’ and living happily ever after. But, one look at divorce rates shows that this doesn’t seem to tally. Long-term relationships can be challenging, and I would suggest this is no bad thing. Few people can trigger us as well as our partners, and this opens up a huge opportunity for growth, as we discuss in this episode. We don’t suggest everyone needs to approach relationships in the way that we do, but perhaps some people may benefit from a slight change in perspective. How To Embrace Self-Acceptance 12 Feb 202400:56:05
"I don't mind what happens. This is the essence of inner freedom" - Jiddu Krishnamurti Acceptance is being in alignment with the present moment. When we do mind what happens, we have judged the situation – 'this should not be happening' – and are now reacting to it from that perspective. We really only have two options when it comes to what is. We can either be aligned with it or against it. And we know which choice we’ve made by how we feel. If there is fear, anger, expectation, anxiety, doubt, or remorse – we are resisting what is. The amount of evidence and research that shows self-acceptance is positively correlated with subjective wellbeing and self-worth is vast. And yet, many people don't understand the 'how' of acceptance. Is it about speaking to ourselves positively, or saying affirmations? No. Acceptance is about letting go of resistance. When we stop rejecting parts of ourselves that we don't like, including uncomfortable thoughts and feelings, peace is free to emerge. But more than that, acceptance isn't something the mind can really do. True acceptance lies in the aware space before the mind. When we can recognise that acceptance is our nature, we can face our inner and outer experience from a position of strength, rather than weakness. Accept and respond, don't resist and react. Embrace Vulnerability For Authentic Connection: Dr Pippa Grange09 Feb 202400:11:38
"Can you connect with people without having to airbrush your flaws?" When we come from a place of fear, we seek to hide our flaws and insecurities, which restricts our ability to connect authentically. When we fear rejection, a deep-seated sense of shame may be lurking, and when we then choose to project those feelings of shame outwards - by criticising, belittling and judging others - it is simply an expression of our own fear of inadequacy. Dr Pippa Grange was credited with helping to transform the culture of the England football team prior to the 2018 World Cup. She helped to make the England camp a less fearful place by emphasising and modelling vulnerability, which enabled the side to reach the semi-finals for the first time in 28 years. You are NOT your thoughts - you are AWARE of your thoughts05 Feb 202400:57:33
You are not your thoughts... you are aware of your thoughts. This is such a valuable and important recognition. Most people identify who they are through their thoughts about themselves. What they do, what they believe, which tribe they belong to. But thoughts are just pointers. As the saying goes, 'the finger pointing to the moon, is not the moon'. A key distinction is to recognise the difference between the 'thinking mind' and the 'aware mind'. We are all familiar with the 'thinking mind' which conceptualises, labels, judges and the like. The 'aware mind', which is whatever it is that 'hears' thoughts, is subtle and easy to overlook, but once we recognise it - it can be truly life-changing. 'Self-Enquiry' and Exploring Our Fundamental Nature - Piers Thurston15 Jan 202400:57:57
What is our identity before psychology? This episode is about self-enquiry, a process you can do to explore what your fundamental identity is, before psychology. We tend to have an idea about who we are, based on thoughts about our roles in life, our beliefs, what has happened to us in the past, our relationships, tribal affiliations and so on. navigate the social world we live in - but it is certainly not the whole story. And we overlook this deeper essence at our peril. My guest is Piers Thurston who skillfully leads people through self-enquiry. He leads me (and you!) through an actual direct experience of self-enquiry at the end of this recording. There is a second part to this conversation, in which we go deeper and explore the implications and benefits of this process & understanding, and it is available to members of my newsletter group, A New Way of Being. You can subscribe on my website, scroll down to the bottom of my homepage: https://www.simonmundie.com/ ** My debut book - Champion Thinking: How To Find Success Without Losing Yourself - is out this Thursday Jan 18. Stop Battling 'Negative' Thoughts & Feelings: Dr Russ Harris12 Jan 202400:09:14
Why resisting and battling uncomfortable thoughts and feelings doesn't work, but acceptance and self-compassion does. Dr. Russ Harris is the world's best-know teacher of Acceptance and Commitment therapy (ACT) Experiencing emotions like anxiety is entirely normal. It is part of the human experience. If you DIDN'T experience them, then there may be a problem. However, it is not unusual to believe we shouldn't experience uncomfortable feelings and thoughts, and so we are prone to resisting them, or distracting ourself from them.. Dr. Russ Harris explains that there is another - better - way. It is a paradoxical intervention - in that we are taught to lean towards the discomfort, not away from it. My debut book - Champion Thinking: How To Find Success Without Losing Yourself is out next thursday 18 Jan. How to produce work of value - and improve your mental health at the same time. Professor Cal Newport argues that our ability to do deep work, which is where we perform undistracted work on something cognitively demanding, is a vital skill to train. Why positive thinking is overrated and what to do instead: US Open winner Dominic Thiem24 Jan 202500:09:43
“Always think positively" sounds like good advice - on the surface. But is it really possible, or even desirable? In this episode, Dominic Thiem and I explore why chasing constant positivity isn’t the answer. Novak Djokovic weighed in on this idea in a 2024 interview, explaining why he doesn’t agree with the idea that we should always think positively. Novak's ability to acknowledge and allow challenging thoughts and feelings, and then recenter himself, is what makes him probably the 'mentally toughest player' in the history of the sport;. Dominic Thiem, the 2020 US Open champion, shares a similar perspective. I caught up with Dom just before his retirement last year, and his insights on this topic were particularly insightful. The Power of Understanding & Living Your Values: Jamie Peacock15 Dec 202300:10:58
Your values are the things that you believe are important in the way you live and work. They (should) determine your priorities, and, deep down, they may be the measures you use to tell if your life is turning out the way you want it to. When the things that you do and the way you behave match your values, life often flows. But when these don't align with your personal values, that's when things feel... wrong. This is why making a conscious effort to identify your values is so important. “Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful.” People often talk about the importance of marginal gains, and improving by 1% in as many areas as possible. However, most of the top performers I have spoken to say by far the most important thing is consistent effort over a long period of time. Showing up each day and doing the work: Ryan Holiday10 Nov 202300:09:21
How you do anything is how you do EVERYTHING. What matters is what you do today. That’s the message Stoic author Ryan Holiday emphasises in this bitesize episode. Ryan has written a number of best-selling books on stoicism, including The Obstacle is the Way. He described stoicism as 'the most practical of all philosophies', and he explains that - in his view - it is important to understand that it is our actions that define us, and every moment is a chance to do and be our best. Breaking Down Barriers Through Skillful Conversation: Neuroscientist Shane O'Mara 06 Nov 202301:19:03
The power of skillful conversation - from the personal to the global level. This week's conversation is with professor Shane O'Mara, a neuroscientist of the top order who is professor of Experimental Brain Research at Trinity College Dublin. He is also the author of Talking Heads: The New Science of How Conversations Shapes Our World. Shane explains the role that conversation and memory has in our ability to envisage a better future. We talk about lots in this episode including the difference between the narrative self - the 'story of me' made up of memories, beliefs and the like - and the 'aware self', which experiences the present moment directly. Most people identify with the former and not the latter - but is that really wise? Shane also explains how countries are created by conversations, and are ideas rather than real entities, and he shares some powerful and proven conversational tools to bridge gaps, break down walls and dissolve the propensity some people have to dehumanize 'the other'. We also discuss the Hard Problem of Consciousness. Overcoming Tribalism and distrust of 'the other'- Carl Frampton - BITESIZE27 Oct 202300:11:42
Treating people as you want to be treated with boxing legend Carl Frampton, Northern Ireland’s first two weight World Champion. Carl grew up in Belfast, in the loyalist area of Tigers Bay. The next housing estate across was the New Lodge which was Republican. As a child, he witnessed tension and traumatising scenes. Carl is a very humble and level headed guy, and he takes pride in uniting people, wherever they're from, and whatever they believe. Beyond superficial differences - he is keen to emphasise we are all the same and that developing peace is possible My debut book - Champion Thinking: How to find success without losing yourself - is available for pre-order now. How Real Is Reality: Professor Donald Hoffman23 Oct 202301:34:58
Just how accurate is the reality we experience through our sense perceptions? That's a big question - and we're about to explain why it is important. We tend to be convinced that that world we experience through our senses is the world as it really is. We also believe we are billions of separate beings - which fosters a sense of tribalism and a distrust of "the other". But, professor Donald Hoffman says science shows that the chance that we see reality as it actually is - is zero. It may look like there are cars, houses and separate people - but that is how we experience reality when it is filtered through the human mind. Space & time are not fundamentally real - they are like a VR headset we have put on. Furthermore, he says cutting edge mathematics and science show that there are not billions of separate beings, but there is one infinite Being - and we are all avatars of that. Professor Donald Hoffman is a renowned cognitive scientist whose work is truly groundbreaking. This conversation will have you question your view of the world, yourself and what's really important in life. The implications are profound. Not least because if we are all avatars of one Being - that means that if I hurt you, I am simultaneously hurting myself. The key lessons from this episode will be posted on my YouTube page which you can find here: https://tinyurl.com/YouTubeLifeLessons WATCH: You are NOT who you think you are - with professor Donald Hoffman: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xGMIQ7po6AI I am delighted to announce that my debut book - Champion Thinking: How to find success without losing yourself - is available for pre-order now.
