A Gluten Free Podcast
Episode 29

On today’s episode, I chat with Cherie Lyden, owner of the award-winning Wholegreen Bakery. We’ll talk about her background as a nutritionist, her and her daughter’s coeliac disease diagnoses, and how this life-changing moment led her to launch one of Australia’s top 100% gluten-free bakeries.

What started as a personal mission quickly grew into Wholegreen Bakery—a now iconic gluten-free bakery and café that has earned national recognition for its innovative and delicious gluten-free menu. Cherie’s approach centres on using fresh, seasonal produce, less sugar, no additives, and 100% gluten-free ingredients—without ever compromising on taste.

Whether you’re newly diagnosed with coeliac disease, living gluten-free for health reasons, or simply seeking better gluten-free options, this conversation will inspire you. Low FODMAP Update, Gut Health & Upcoming Procedures24 Apr 202200:13:52

A Gluten Free Podcast
Episode 22

On today’s episode, I’m giving you a personal update on my low FODMAP journey and some important next steps in my gut health investigation.

If you caught Episode 20, you’ll know I’ve been experiencing ongoing gastrointestinal symptoms despite strictly following a gluten free diet for coeliac disease. After chatting with my GP, a dietitian, and a gastroenterologist, we decided to dig deeper into what could be going on.

In this episode, I’ll talk about:

  • How I’m feeling two weeks into the low FODMAP diet
  • What the process has looked like so far with food tracking and symptom monitoring
  • How I’m using the Monash University FODMAP App
  • What’s coming next, including my upcoming endoscopy and colonoscopy

This isn’t an easy process, and I want to be honest about the ups and downs. If you’re going through something similar — whether it's post-diagnosis confusion or lingering symptoms despite doing everything "right" — I hope this episode reminds you that you’re not alone.

🧠 What Is the Low FODMAP Diet?
The low FODMAP diet, developed by Monash University, is used to manage Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) symptoms. It's done in stages and should always be guided by a health professional. I’m currently in the elimination phase, working closely with my dietitian to track what foods may be contributing to my symptoms.

⚕️ Next Steps in My Gut Health Journey
My gastroenterologist has recommended both an endoscopy and colonoscopy to rule out anything more serious. I'll share what that process has been like leading up to the procedures, and why advocating for your health is so important — even after a coeliac diagnosis.

How to Travel Gluten Free with Elikqitie from Travel Gluten Free17 Apr 202200:50:31

A Gluten Free Podcast – Episode 20

On today’s episode, I’m joined by Elikqitie, creator of the Travel Gluten Free podcast, gluten-free travel blogger, and author of The Guide to Traveling Gluten Free. We chat about her personal journey with coeliac disease, why she started her podcast, and how she and her daughter, Aliyah, both navigate gluten-free life — especially while traveling.

Elikqitie shares how she transformed her favorite gluten-filled foods into gluten-free versions, how she advocates for her daughter with coeliac disease, and the clever ways she’s made travel easier and safer — including creating her own personalized gluten-free translation cards.

🧭 Why She Started Travel Gluten Free
While on a solo road trip shortly after her diagnosis, Elikqitie realised how easily one gluten exposure could ruin her entire vacation. Searching online for help, she found very little guidance for gluten-free travel, especially for people with coeliac disease. That inspired her to create the Travel Gluten Free podcast, which later led to a blog and her book — all helping others travel safely and confidently while gluten free.

💸 Navigating Coeliac Disease in the U.S. Medical System
Living with coeliac disease in the U.S. comes with additional challenges due to the privatized healthcare system. Elikqitie shares how, even with insurance, she often spends around $5000 USD per year on medical care. It’s a powerful reminder of the added burden chronic conditions can bring in different healthcare systems.

🍽️ Tips for Staying Strict on a Gluten Free Diet
One of Elikqitie’s key tips for maintaining a gluten-free diet? Find gluten-free versions of the foods you love. When you enjoy what you're eating, you’re far less likely to feel deprived or tempted to cheat — and that mindset shift can make a huge difference in how you live with coeliac disease.

✈️ Gluten Free Travel Advice You Can Trust
We dive into practical strategies for eating out safely while traveling, including:

  • Why you shouldn’t assume all chain restaurants are the same abroad
  • How saying "gluten allergy" can help get your point across
  • How she safely orders at restaurants in unfamiliar countries
  • Her favourite cities and destinations for gluten-free travel
  • Why cruises are a surprisingly great option for gluten-free travellers

If you’ve ever worried about travelling gluten free — especially internationally — you’ll want to hear Elikqitie’s tried-and-tested advice. We also talk about our shared love of gluten-free podcasting and the importance of building community through shared experiences.

My Wife Bec Interviews Me About My Gut Health Journey: Low FODMAP, Coeliac Disease & Ongoing Symptoms10 Apr 202200:19:34

A Gluten Free Podcast
Episode 20

On today’s episode of A Gluten Free Podcast, we’re switching things up — because my wife Bec hijacks the mic to interview me! That’s right, I’m stepping out of the host chair and into the hot seat to share a more personal side of my journey.

Even though I follow a strict gluten free diet after being diagnosed with coeliac disease, I’ve continued to experience ongoing gut symptoms that just don’t seem to add up. In this episode, Bec and I talk through what that’s been like for me — the frustrations, the uncertainty, and the next steps I’m taking to get to the bottom of it.

I open up about working with various health professionals, including a gastroenterologist and a dietitian, and my recent decision to begin the low FODMAP diet. This diet is being done under professional guidance and is part of a broader plan to figure out what’s really going on in my gut.

💬 In this episode, we chat about:

  • My ongoing symptoms despite being strictly gluten free
  • Why I decided to explore the low FODMAP diet
  • The process of working with a trained dietitian
  • Upcoming tests (endoscopy and colonoscopy) to rule out other issues
  • How this has impacted my mental health and daily life
  • The importance of trusting your body and seeking help when you need it

🧠 What is the Low FODMAP Diet?
The low FODMAP diet, developed by Monash University, is a 3-step dietary approach to managing Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). It involves reducing certain carbohydrates that aren’t absorbed well in the gut, which can cause symptoms like bloating, pain, and changes in bowel habits.

Here’s a quick breakdown of the FODMAPs:

  • Fermentable – gut bacteria ferment undigested carbs, causing gas
  • Oligosaccharides – found in wheat, onions, garlic, legumes
  • Disaccharides – lactose in milk, yogurt, soft cheeses
  • Monosaccharides – excess fructose in honey, apples, etc.
  • Polyols – sorbitol and mannitol in some fruits, veggies, and sweeteners

If you're curious to learn more, I highly recommend the Monash University Low FODMAP App.

Ezequiel Peña, General Manager of Glutagen, Discusses the Gluten-Protection Supplement ‘GluteGuard’20 Mar 202201:09:46

A Gluten Free Podcast
Episode 17

In this episode of A Gluten Free Podcast, I chat with Ezequiel Peña, General Manager of Glutagen, the company behind GluteGuard — a popular enzyme supplement designed to support people on a gluten free diet who want extra protection against accidental gluten exposure.

We discuss Ezequiel’s background, the scientific studies behind GluteGuard, and how the product works to break down gluten peptides, helping reduce the symptoms and immune reactions caused by cross-contamination.

What is GluteGuard?

GluteGuard is an enzyme supplement aimed at those medically diagnosed with gluten-related disorders such as coeliac disease. It is not a replacement for a strict gluten free diet but can offer extra reassurance when dining out or travelling.

How Does GluteGuard Work?

According to Gluteguard, the product’s enteric coating ensures that the enzymes reach the small intestine, where they break down gluten proteins into harmless fragments. These fragments then pass through the digestive system without triggering symptoms or immune responses.

Scientific Evidence and Clinical Studies

GluteGuard has been extensively researched, starting with in-vitro studies and advancing to randomised placebo-controlled clinical trials. These studies demonstrate that GluteGuard is effective at protecting individuals with gluten-related disorders against symptoms caused by daily gluten challenges.

Coeliac Australia’s Advice on GluteGuard

While GluteGuard shows promise as a protective supplement, Coeliac Australia clearly states that it is not intended to treat or cure coeliac disease or any medical condition and should never replace a strict gluten free diet.

Dietetics Meets Lived Experience – Penny Dellsperger on Coeliac Disease, Advocacy & Research30 Jan 202200:34:37

A Gluten Free Podcast
Episode 10

On this episode of A Gluten Free Podcast, I’m joined by Penny Dellsperger, an accredited dietitian, Health Advocacy Officer at Coeliac Australia, and someone who also lives with coeliac disease herself. Penny brings a rare dual perspective — both professional and personal — to the world of gluten-free living, patient support, and cutting-edge research.

We dive into Penny’s own coeliac diagnosis and how it shaped her career path in nutrition and dietetics. As someone who not only educates and advocates for people with coeliac disease but also manages the condition herself, Penny offers incredibly insightful advice on navigating the gluten-free diet with confidence and evidence-based guidance.

We also explore her role at Coeliac Australia, where she’s deeply involved in advocacy, public education, and national projects that aim to improve the health outcomes of people living with coeliac disease. Penny unpacks some of the major research projects she's contributed to, including the Gluten Threshold Study, the role of oats in the gluten-free diet, and challenges around coeliac disease diagnosis in Australia.

Whether you’re newly diagnosed, supporting someone with coeliac disease, or working in healthcare, this episode offers clear, science-backed information from someone who truly “gets it” from both sides.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • Penny’s personal journey with coeliac disease and diagnosis

A Gluten Free Podcast
Episode 9

On this special episode of A Gluten Free Podcast, I sit down with someone very close to me — my wife, Bec. Living with coeliac disease doesn't just affect the person diagnosed; it impacts their partner, family, and the entire household. Today, we have a heartfelt and honest conversation about how my diagnosis changed our lives — from unexpected challenges to the positive shifts it created in our lifestyle, mindset, and relationship.

Bec shares her unique perspective as the partner of someone with coeliac disease — what it was like during the lead-up to my diagnosis, how she adapted to gluten-free living, and how she’s supported me (even on the tough days). We discuss things like food prep, social settings, shared responsibilities, and how coeliac disease has deepened our connection in some unexpected ways.

We also touch on the emotional toll coeliac can have on both partners, as well as the importance of support, communication, and humour. And stick around — there’s a surprise little guest who joins us later in the episode to bring some extra smiles!

Whether you’re living with coeliac disease or supporting someone who is, this episode offers a personal and relatable look at what gluten-free life looks like behind the scenes.

In this episode, we chat about:

  • Adjusting to a gluten-free household as a couple
  • The highs and lows of living with coeliac disease
  • How to support a loved one after diagnosis
  • Honest insights from a partner who "didn't sign up for this" — but dove in anyway

Young, Driven & Gluten Free – Isaac’s Coeliac Journey and Business Mission16 Jan 202200:19:08

A Gluten Free Podcast
Episode 8

On this episode of A Gluten Free Podcast, I chat with Isaac, the inspiring young founder of Gluten Free By Isaac. After being diagnosed with coeliac disease, a family trip to Hawaii sparked something bigger for Isaac — a passion for gluten-free advocacy and a drive to create resources for others just like him.

At only 14 years old, Isaac is already making a real impact in the gluten-free community through his online platforms, product reviews, and positive voice for people living with coeliac disease. He shares how his diagnosis changed his lifestyle, how travel influenced his mindset, and what he’s learned since starting his own gluten-free business.

We also talk about the importance of youth voices in the coeliac space, how to stay positive after a life-changing diagnosis, and how Isaac balances it all — school, business, and spreading awareness — with enthusiasm and maturity beyond his years.

This episode is perfect for families navigating a new diagnosis, teens adjusting to gluten-free life, and anyone needing a dose of inspiration from the next generation of gluten-free advocates.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • Isaac’s coeliac diagnosis and how it shaped his gluten-free journey
  • The family trip that sparked the idea for Gluten Free By Isaac
  • What it’s like running a gluten-free business as a teenager
  • How Isaac uses social media to build awareness and community
  • The biggest challenges and lessons he’s learned so far
  • Why youth voices matter in the coeliac and gluten-free conversation

Turning Diagnosis into Awareness – Kylie Anderson on ‘Gluten Tootin’ and Her Family’s Coeliac Journey09 Jan 202200:36:30

A Gluten Free Podcast
Episode 7

On this episode of A Gluten Free Podcast, I’m joined by Kylie Anderson, passionate coeliac advocate and author of the children’s book Gluten Tootin'. Kylie shares her family's personal experience with coeliac disease, beginning with her young son's diagnosis and the emotional, practical, and social challenges that followed.

We talk about the inspiration behind Gluten Tootin’, a fun and educational book designed to help kids (and adults) understand coeliac disease and the importance of a strict gluten-free diet. Kylie explains how storytelling can help children feel seen, supported, and less alone in their diagnosis.

Beyond her book, Kylie and I dive into the broader topic of coeliac awareness — how much more education and support is still needed in schools, social settings, and the wider community for those living with coeliac disease.

This episode is a powerful reminder of how creativity and advocacy can go hand in hand. Whether you're a parent of a child with coeliac disease, a teacher, or simply someone wanting to support the gluten-free community better, Kylie’s story will inspire you to raise awareness “one toot at a time.”

In this episode, we chat about:

  • Kylie’s son’s coeliac diagnosis and how it changed their family’s life
  • Why Kylie wrote Gluten Tootin’ and how it helps children understand coeliac disease
  • The importance of humour and honesty in discussing health with kids
  • The challenges of raising coeliac awareness in schools and public spaces
  • Why more resources are needed for families navigating a new diagnosis
  • How storytelling can break down stigma and empower children
