The Need for Research in Homeopathy “Homeopathy has been a subject of debate in the medical community for its unconventional approach to treatment. The answer lies in research. Firstly, let’s discuss the basics of research. Research in any field, including homeopathy, involves systematic investigation to establish facts, reaffirm the results of previous work, solve new or existing problems, support theorems, or develop new theories.

For clinicians, engaging in research is not just about contributing to a body of knowledge; it’s about enhancing patient care quality. Now, how can clinicians undertake research? It begins with identifying a question or a problem. For homeopaths, this could be the efficacy of a particular remedy or the treatment’s impact on a specific condition.

Once the question is clear, the next steps are:

• Literature Review: Understand what’s already known about the topic.
• Methodology: Choose an appropriate research method, be it qualitative, quantitative, or a mixed approach.
• Data Collection: Gather information through experiments, surveys, or clinical trials.
• Analysis: Examine the data to draw conclusions.
• Publication: Share the findings with the medical community for peer review.

But when is the right time to undertake research? The answer is simple: when there’s a gap in knowledge that needs to be filled, or when clinical observations prompt further investigation.

Today’s materia medica tip is about a remedy named Lemna minor. When asked about practising physician’s views for a remedy that has “putrid smell, has loss of smell, has putrid taste and has postnasal drip especially in the rainy season”, I got various responses ranging from Dulcamara, Rhus tox, Kali bichromicum, Lemna minor etc. So, in today’s materia medica tip we will be concentrating on the clinical pointers of the remedies in comparison to the Lemna minor. Lemna minor as a remedy is a catarrhal remedy. Frequently used in cases of nasal polypi, swollen turbinate etc. At this point the remedy of comparison should be Sanguinaria nitricum which is also used frequently in cases of nasal polypi. In Lemna minor we have associated symptoms such as postnasal drip whereas in Sanguinaria nitricum the prominent symptom remains blockage of nose along with profuse watery discharge from nose. The postnasal drip of Sanguinaria nitricum is more towards dry side as compared to Lemna minor.

In cases where postnasal drip is the only presenting complaint we have three common remedies of concern – Corallium rubrum, Lemna minor and Sanguinaria nit. While the Lemna and Sanguinaria nit have symptoms of obstruction of nose, Corallium has profuse secretion of mucus dripping through the posterior nares as main presenting symptom.

Lemna can also be used in nasal symptoms especially the putrid smell and the loss of smell in post viral cases (post covid cases). We have (and still) encountered many patients of covid having loss (or alteration) of taste and smell. Lemna can be an apt remedy in such cases where patients are complaining of loss of smell, altered smell, and altered or no taste.

Coming to another symptom of Lemna minor – pain from nostril to ear, it should be compared to Phytolacca which also has pain from throat to ear. This symptom needs to be clarified at patients end properly so as to advise the right indicated remedy to him.

In cases where we deal with modalities primarily (rather than exact symptoms) ie where symptoms are common, and modalities are uncommon, we should differentiate remedies on a broader level.

When the symptoms are worsened in damp rainy weather especially heavy rains, we can compare the remedies as follows. In Dulcamara the respiratory symptoms predominate such as dry coryza, complete stoppage of nose and thick yellow discharge, whereas in Lemna minor there’s a prominent postnasal drip and mucopurulent discharges, on the other hand in Ammonium carb there is complete stopping of the nose with coryza symptoms especially at night with minimal discharges, whereas in Kali bichromicum the greenish discharges predominate.

For stoppage of nose, we have plenty of remedies but again it depends upon our discretion that we want to use the broad acting remedies based on the complete individualized picture or as a single discrete specific remedy for acute conditions. In majority of the cases, we use broad acting remedies as acute on chronic remedies. In such cases their usage should be logical and limited.

Histamine by first identified in ergot and soybean oil by Barger and Dale in 1910.

It is widely ddistributed in plant and animal tissues having the highest concentration in lungs. Histamine is destroyed in digestive tract; therefore, its conventional use is usually parenteral.
Histaminum is a frequently indicated intercurrent remedy used for various clinical conditions related to allergy. But at the same time there is scarcity of its related literature. This article intends to collate the information regarding homeopathic uses of Histaminum as a remedy.

The major used indicated and submitted by practicing physicians can be enlisted as

Respiratory

• Hay fever,
• Nasal congestion,
• Painful dryness of nose,
• Nose blocked
• Bronchial congestion,
• Recurrent tendency for allergic bronchitis,
• Asthma
• Conservative in cases of COPD / Emphysema

• Redness,

Types of Prescription – Used as Intercurrent in majority of the cases, should not be repeated too often especially in lower doses.

In today’s materia medica tip, we shall discuss few important remedies of neuralgias. Few days back I asked my fellow colleagues, about the preferred remedy of choice when a symptom is there – Severe neuralgia in temporal region, recurring daily at same hour. The options provided were:

A) Spigelia
B) Kali cyanatum
C) Hypericum
D) Cedron

The respondents pointed out every remedy but majority opted for Cedron, and Spigelia for this condition. But the right answer is Kail Cyanatum. This symptom is picked up from Boericke’s Materia Medica which says, “Kali Cyanatum: Severe neuralgia in temporal region, recurring daily at same hour. Pain in orbital and supra-maxillary region, with screaming and loss of consciousness.”

Now let us discuss what can be the pointers for prescription of key remedies when it comes to neuralgia. Obviously, the Boericke MM says clearly when the Neuralgia of temporal region reoccurs at the same hour daily the preferred remedy of choice is Kali cyanatum. This is appended with screaming and loss of consciousness i.e. the pain is so much unbearable that the patient can even scream with this pain. At this point in time it should be compared with other important remedies like:

Spigelia: In spigelia we see a typical case of Ciliary neuralgia, a true neuritis, and not a referred pain due to other pathologies. The pain is severe around the eyes extending deep, but I have seen in my practice that if the pain is typical left sided and even covering the fronto – temporal region, spigelia is the preferred choice of remedy. In addition in many cases one can find dilated pupils (as in case of associated fevers), ophthalmic pain in rheumatic patients. The pain can have characteristic – pressive in nature and aggravates while turning eyes.

Hypericum: Hypericum is another good remedy for nerve pathologies, and let me tell you, it is most of the time used empirically in majority of the conditions having nerve symptoms, weakness and pathology. In hypericum we see facial neuralgia with lots of aches, brain fag and even neurasthenia, ie, a substantial part of the nervous system being involved. This is the reason we have lots of local symptoms in hypericum – pulling pain, tearing sensation, pain in eyes, toothache and even sadness. Here it clearly differentiates makes itself different from Kali cyanatum.

Cedron: Cedron is the key remedy for periodicity. Its keynote says it all. We see in Cedron, the pains from temples across eyes, it means it covers the pain in band. Also, neuralgic pain over whole of right side of face. Yes, the materia medica says its aggravation at about 9am for which it must be compared with Kali cyanatum. Like hypericum it has crazy feeling from pain across the forehead but not whole of the brain. Associated, you may find, numbness sensation with headache and pains. In eyes we see shooting pains and scalding lachrymation for which it must be compared with Arsenicum and Euphrasia. A remedy of repute for Supra-orbital neuralgia periodic, Iritis and choroiditis.

Thus when a neuralgia attains definitive picture, attended with modalities we have the ease of choosing a remedy. We need to give proper weightage to the causation, symptom in front of us, followed by modality and associated factors.

As homeopaths, whenever we think of remedies of metal origin, we consider something which is very deep and long acting. This fact is in accordance to the simile principle because the metals are basically present deep inside in our tissues.

But why to categorize them according to the length of action. The answer is simple yet tricky. Most of the metal remedies comes into full term use when we are struck with a case. While our prescription is able to relieve the symptoms but not able to act for longer term and give a deep impression. Here comes the role of remedies of metal origin, but the thumb rule remains the same – symptom similarity, strong intuition or robust past experience.

Today’s quick tip is related to one such metallic origin remedy – TITANIUM METALLICUM.

Titanium is extensively used in surgeries (first introduced in the 1950s) and dentistry. It has gained this place due to its biocompatibility and resistance to corrosion from human body cellular and extra cellular environment. It is able to make a protective oxide film in the presence of oxygen. Therefore, it has varied used as prosthetic, internal fixation, inner body devices, and instrumentation etc. It is quoted that, “There is no known biological role for titanium. There is a detectable amount of titanium in the human body and it has been estimated that we take in about 0.8 mg/day, but most passes through us without being adsorbed. It is not a poison metal and the human body can tolerate titanium in large dose (Source).

Here comes the beauty of homeopathy. Once considered to be the safest and most inert substances when subjected to potentization appears to have inherent properties of affecting the human body and when used therapeutically, have the power to bring a restoration to health.

The Boericke’s materia medica starts its description as “Is found in the bones and muscles. Has been used in lupus and tuberculosis processes externally, also in skin disease, nasal catarrh, etc.” Now we can very well relate the location affinity of this metal. Since it is present is bones and skin within physiological levels, its triturated and ultrahigh diluted forms are able to affect the skin and muscles. 

Further, some important clinical symptoms and conditions are mentioned as,

• Vision: Imperfect vision, the peculiarity being that half an object only could be seen at once.
• Vertigo: Giddiness with vertical hemiopia.
• Sexual: Sexual weakness, with too early ejaculation of semen in coitus (compares with Selenium).
• Kidneys: Bright’s disease.
• Skin: Eczema, lupus,
• Respiratory: Rhinitis. Usually metallic origin remedies are only used in rhinitis like cases when every else has failed.

But it is also a challenge of us to prescribe such remedies when we don’t have characteristics and defined modalities. But nonetheless, this remedy (and similar remedies) do play important role when we are presented with partial symptoms. Therefore, for readers ease the following scenarios must be taken into consideration:

• One sided disease.
• Partial symptoms.
• When patient is consulted remotely.
• Lack of time to take the case BUT diagnosis and CLINICAL condition is confirmed.
• When patient is not cooperative.
• When well selected remedies fail to bring the desired outcomes.
