In this week’s episode of 36 From The Vault we find the band playing a Sunday - Tuesday run in late-Summer 1974. The jams are deep, the country is in turmoil, and idiots are climbing the fence. This volume hears The Dead at perhaps their most exhausted, two months shy of their hiatus, but willing to explore the outer realms of their musical ideas. Like two of the three previous ‘74 Dick’s Picks, this one works like a playlist, capturing some of the best - and some of the most questionable moments - of the mid-Atlantic run.
Disc One begins with a wild 25min dive into expansive 70’s Miles jamming by way of “Playin’ In The Band” before moving into a groovy “Scarlet Begonias.” Elsewhere “China Cat Sunflower -> I Know You Rider” shows off its 1974 breezy jamming. Disc Two is highlighted by a mellow “Weather Report Suite” which then moves into a jam proper that, while not as extended as the Dick’s Picks 12 version, still highlights the sense that anything could be jammed amidst the Watergate scandal.
On Disc Three we hear a stunning “Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo -> It Must Have Been The Roses” segue. Later, we hear “Truckin’” take over the set through a vast jamming segment that touches on “The Other One” and “Space” before moving into a gorgeous “Stella Blue.” Disc Four is in the running for the best Discs of the entire Dick’s Picks series. One of the greatest “Eyes Of The World” ever kicks us off before moving into a 38min “Playin’ In The Band -> Scarlet Begonias -> Playin’ In The Band” and then finally, “Uncle John’s Band” closes us out. It’s a stunning release for jamheads and a vivid picture of The Dead at the end of their hallowed 1972-1974 single drummer run.

In this week’s episode of 36 From The Vault we find the band prepping for their Europe ‘72 tour with a run of shows at the Academy of Music in New York City. Featuring a set with Bo Diddley, this volume highlights the emergence of Keith Godchaux in the band + showcases some of the best Pigpen we’ve ever heard through the Dick’s Picks series.
Disc One features the majority of The Dead’s set with Bo Diddley on March 25. Showcasing their brilliance as a backing band, we hear them dip into the Blues for perhaps the last time in the 70s. Highlighted by a stunning “Jam” between Diddley and The Dead we see an alternate path for the band + their ability to linger in a variety of American styles throughout their career. The disc ends with a few one-off covers for the band + an excellent “Playin In The Band” from March 27.
The final three discs encompass the entire May 28th show. Featuring a number of rarities through the Dick’s Picks series, it’s a great peek into the band during this period. On Disc Two, Pigpen shines on “Chinatown Shuffle, “Mr. Charlie,” and “Next Time You See Me.” Jerry’s vocals on “You Win Again” showcase his ability to be as much a Blues man as he is a psych master, and “Cumberland Blues” rivals the version on the Europe ‘72 release. On Disc Three we hear perhaps the greatest “Looks Like Rain” ever played, plus we hear another excellent, early cut on “Playin In The Band,” before Pigpen highlights his emotional side with “The Stranger (Two Souls In Communion).” Disc Four displays the band’s experimentation with a lengthy “The Other One,” before closing the set out with a laid back “Not Fade Away -> Going Down The Road Feelin Bad -> Not Fade Away.” It’s a great snapshot of The Dead ahead of a transformative period in their career. By year’s end they’d be a completely different band.

In this week’s episode of 36 From The Vault we return to the hallowed month of May 1977 for two complete shows, and the only six-CD set of the Dick’s Picks series. With two shows that prelude the stunning Dick’s Picks 3 set, we hear the sleek brilliance of 1977 Dead across 6+hrs of music.
The May 19 side of the release is highlighted by some of the Dead’s best song’s utilized throughout 1977 with a particularly stunning “Peggy-O” on Disc One. The magic is found throughout Disc Three where “Terrapin Station” > “Playin’ In The Band” -> “Uncle John’s Band” -> “Drums” > “The Wheel” > “China Doll” -> “Playin’ In The Band” showcases seamless creativity and exceptional flow throughout. While May 21 shares many of the same songs with the famed Cornell set from May 8, it’s bolstered by an outstanding “Jack-A-Roe” on Disc Four as well as a top tier “Scarlet Begonias” -> “Fire On The Mountain” on Disc Five. Disc Six features the entire second set of 5/21 with “He’s Gone” -> “Drums” -> “The Other One” showcasing the evolving improvisational approach of The Dead during this period. Of note, “One More Saturday Night” makes its long-awaited DP debut during this set. Finally, Rob & Steve discuss the bonus tracks included from October 11, 1977’s show in Norman, OK. If you ever needed convincing of why May 1977 is so highly regarded by GD fans, this extended set should be all you need for convincing.

Welcome to Season 4 of 36 From The Vault! We begin our final season before the vault closes with a peek back into the world of 1973 Dead. Joining them for their midwest/west tour through the frigid US, we hear the band at the peak of their powers. Capable of transitioning from cowboy rock to show-stopping ballads to deeply psychedelic jazzy jamming, it’s one of the most complete Dick’s Picks released thus far and a fitting kick off to the season.
Disc One opens features some great playing in “Loser” and “Jack Straw” before “Playing In The Band” gives us the first taste of experimental Dead of the set. Disc Two is in strong competition for the best of the set with “Dark Star” -> “Eyes Of The World” > “Mississippi Half Step” going deep. Disc Three is another classic set of some of the best Dead songs ever written played by one of the greatest versions of The Dead. However it’s in Disc Four where the true magic strikes again. “Row Jimmy,” “Truckin’” -> “The Other One”> “Eyes Of The World>” “Morning Dew” is close to an hour of brilliant and fluid Dead. A great reminder why we all listen to this band so much, and why Rob & Steve dedicate 2hrs to chatting about them every other week.

In the series premiere, we meet our narrator, Terrance Woodridge, who brings us a tale he’s chased down: the story of Sugar Maple, the guitar of legend with a timeless sound that's passed from hand to hand over the years.
In this episode, we go back to 1951 and hear the story of "Sweet Licks" Bobby Lindro, an orphan from the farmlands outside Chicago. When his brand new Telecaster’s neck is destroyed, he's sure nothing can replace it, until his Aunt procures mysterious wood that seems to make Bobby's guitar truly sing, and gives Bobby dreams that carry him places he never meant to go.
