Pirates, kidnappings, beheadings of the tourists… unfortunately, these are the things that Semporna is infamous for. Some monkeys are nice, like the proboscis monkeys of the island of Borneo. But some monkeys like the macaques… well, let’s just say they are the evil ones.

We've been riding our KTM 250 Adventure motorcycle around East Malaysia, and were now exploring the Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Reserve when we had a very mischievous wild encounter with the monkeys here. And one of them in particular wanted my nice KLIM helmet! What was I supposed to do?

We were always told not to feed the wildlife, especially human food. But when we visited the Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Reserve, and we saw that they were feeding the proboscis monkeys there “pancakes,” we began to wonder how ethical this place actually was.

But as we delved into the history of Labuk Bay, as well as information regarding the proboscis monkey, I realized that every story has two sides to it.

I hit a bump, then the motorcycle died. It was unexpected for sure, but when riding around the island of Borneo, I’ve come to expect the unexpected.

The Tip to Tip Route of East Malaysia – an epic ride of 1300 kilometers (820 miles) from the eastern edge of the island of Borneo to its most northwestern point. And we were about to complete this incredible feat that few people ever have the opportunity to do, riding our KTM 250 Adventure two up from one end of the Tip to Tip Route to the other. For Tim and I, diving into the ocean is like arriving on a distant planet – it’s full of strange and exotic creatures that are completely unknown to us, some of which can be quite dangerous. So as we found ourselves on the shores of the Sulu Sea, one of the most biodiverse expanses of ocean on earth, we were apprehensive to go into the waters where there were spiky and bizarre marine creatures living just below the surface. 

But it was the beauty of our rustic beachside cabin in East Malaysia (a place with a view to die for) that finally drew us into the Sulu Sea. Because we might only be here once in our lives…

As we rode our KTM 250 Adventure motorcycle through East Malaysia, there was one thing that we kept seeing everywhere – palm oil. These recognizable tropical trees are grown everywhere here, and the fruits are sold for their versatile oil which is used in tons of products across the globe, including foods, cosmetics, and of course, oils. It is a whopping $7.5 billion USD industry for Malaysia, and it has brought a new source of wealth to the country. But it is also a very controversial industry because of all the rainforest deforestation that it has caused.

So much jungle habitat has been lost due to palm oil farming, that now endemic wildlife such as orangutans and pygmy elephants are struggling to survive. That’s heartbreaking to hear, but at the same time, it’s so easy just to say, “Palm oil is bad.” And it’s another thing to actually travel throughout the country of Malaysia and hear first-hand what the reality of the industry is.

And what we learned while we explored palm oil plantations was truly surprising.

It’s the Sea to Sky Challenge of Borneo – riding from the seaside city of Kota Kinabalu to the highest point you can go by road on the island, a town on the slopes of Mount Kinabalu at an altitude of 1900 meters (6200 feet). It’s an impressive feat to accomplish, and considering that we are on the equator here, going from tropics to a sub-alpine climate is a crazy, stark change of elevation that took our breath away (literally). 

But if the elevation rise wasn’t enough, we were surprised to find ourselves on a narrow and steep road to get to the highest point, and that it was even more of a challenge.

As we continued our journey riding a motorcycle through East Malaysia, we thought we had gotten through the worst of the rain in Brunei and Sarawak. But once we crossed into the Malaysian state of Sabah and headed to the big city of Kota Kinabalu, we realized that Mother Nature was not done with us yet.

Ahead of us was the Pan-Borneo Highway… except we could no longer see it. The entire road and surrounding region was covered in a thick layer of brown water, entirely flooded out. And not knowing how long this flooded road was going to be for, or more importantly, how deep it was, we just plowed right into it, hoping for the best… But also fearing the worst.

We’ve always used a phone as our GPS navigation system when traveling on a motorcycle. And usually everything works out great. But today, we discovered that we’d made a big mistake with our phone, and it’s now dead. And suddenly we realize how vulnerable and lost we are without it.

Moreover, with two more international borders to cross today, we’re hoping that we can fix this problem before we get stuck in the middle of nowhere with no idea of how to get to where we need to go…

TODAY we begin our great East Malaysian odyssey – from Tip to Tip and along the Pan-Borneo Highway stretching all the way from Kilometer 0 to the other end of the island in Tawau. We’ll be riding over 2,150 miles (3,500 kilometers), touching the beaches of three different seas, through some of the thickest jungles of Southeast Asia, and to the highest mountain of Borneo.

It’s an epic quest of monumental proportions, and we’re going to be doing it all on a KTM 250 Adventure! 2 people and all of our stuff squished onto one small motorcycle that doesn’t have a good luggage system…

What could possibly go wrong?

Malaysia may be amazing, but it also has a dark side.

We came face to face with that dark side when exploring Niah Caves in Sarawak, East Malaysia. The deep cavernous labyrinth that we explored is no ordinary cave system – these are huge pre-historic caves that are situated in the heart of one of the world’s most inhospitable jungles: the ancient rainforests of the island of Borneo.

And here in Niah Caves, the many remains of neolithic dead humans in this cave is fascinating. But the creatures we found that were very much alive… That all equated to one of our most terrifying experiences yet.

One thing you find a lot of when traveling around Southeast Asia is people. As one of the most densely populated regions of the world, we did not expect to come across a long stretch of beach without a house, a piece of garbage, or even a single person on it.

But then we stumbled upon this hidden gem while riding our KTM 250 Adventure motorcycle through East Malaysia. 40 kilometers, or 25 miles of pristine sand and shimmering waters… Undeveloped, unpolluted, untouched, vast, and empty, this beach is so natural and unscathed by human development that it’s probably in the exact same state that it had been hundreds, if not thousands of years ago.

Our first time crossing into Brunei was a rained-out disaster. But this time the sun is out, Marisa is feeling better after her sickness, and we are ready to experience Brunei and its world-renowned bridge for all it’s worth.

Actually, it is up for debate of whether the Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien Bridge is the longest bridge in Southeast Asia (more about that in the video), but it’s certainly a spectacle to behold! Brunei might be a tiny country, but it has made a bold statement to the world with its engineering feats and impressive construction. This bridge is not only long, but it’s gorgeous, and riding along it, and passing through its stunning archways is like being transported into another world…

No gas, no food, no towns, no hotels. Pure jungle.

It’s one of the most remote roads on the island of Borneo, through one of the densest and oldest rainforests on earth. So of course we wanted to ride through this interior road into the heart of Sabah, Malaysia, but there were a few major problems with this trip.

The first is that there are very few amenities on the road. Without camping gear and no hotels along the way, we simply have to make it to the other side or we’ll be stuck in the jungle at night.

Also, there are no gas stations. So we planned on packing extra gasoline in plastic 2 liter water bottles strapped to our KTM 250 Adventure motorcycle. But will it be enough?

And the final problem is that I have a horrible fever, and because of a time constraint on the rental motorcycle, we HAVE TO go to today.

I’m beginning to wonder if this was such a good idea…

They call them “water villages” or “kampung air” in Malay, but I call them “fantasy floating villages” because they remind me of fantastical cultures of people that live completely off of the ocean. But these people are real, and there’s more than 50,000 of them in Malaysia, with an estimated 10,000 water houses built on stilts over the water.

So of course, while we rode across the island of Borneo on our KTM 250 Adventure motorcycle, we had to check one out, and see how the people there actually live. And it’s like stepping into a video game world that’s straight out of someone’s imagination…
