However, there has been one bright silver lining to it. Let me explain to you with an example. Auckland City FC, a team of part-time footballers, played one of the biggest clubs in the world, Bayern Munich, in an official FIFA tournament. Yes, the club got a handsome amount of money for participation, but there is something bigger than money. That’s hope. Because of the FIFA Club World Cup, now more and more football clubs and footballers can dream of playing in a major football tournament alongside the star footballers and famous football teams. In my opinion, this is a huge boost to football development across the world for both footballers and clubs. When it comes to supporting their teams in the stadium, football fans are known to be the loudest. They can be just as hostile as they can be galvanizing. Stadiums like Anfield and Signal Iduna Park come to mind when talking about fantastic atmospheres in stadiums, but few can trump the Galatasaray fans at the Turk Telekom Arena.
In fact, in a match between Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray at the latter’s home, the fans broke the decibel record, reaching 131.76 decibels. This made it to the Guinness World Records book for the loudest crowd roar at a sports stadium.
Interestingly, this record was broken a couple of years later in 2013. NFL side Seattle Seahawks were playing the San Francisco 49ers, when the former team’s fans notched up a mind-boggling 131.9 decibels, which was 0.2 decibels higher than the Galatasaray fans.

Why didn't India play in the 1950 FIFA World Cup? It's not because Indians could not afford shoes and were not allowed to play barefoot. So what was the actual reason?
India had qualified for the 1950 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, but they dropped out at the last minute. India's World Cup qualification group consisted of Burma, Indonesia, and the Philippines, and all three ended up withdrawing their names. As a result, India earned themselves a berth at the World Cup without having to play a single minute of qualifiers. However, just before the World Cup, AIFF released a statement saying India wouldn't be participating because they weren't well prepared.
 
This was quite a vague reason, which gave rise to plenty of speculation and theories. One of those theories was that the AIFF thought it best to focus on the 1952 Olympics. While this may seem bizarre today, at the time, the Olympics were far more prestigious than the FIFA World Cup, so in that context, that decision did make some sense.

Barca have been playing at the Camp Nou since 1957. In terms of capacity, it is the biggest stadium in Europe, housing 99,354 fans. However, they’ve been playing their home games this season at the Estadio Olympic Lluis because Camp Nou is currently under renovation.

Barcelona will end up spending 1.5 billion euros for the renovation, with the help of 20 different lenders. The naming rights deal with Spotify, which is worth around 280 million euros, will also aid in the process.

The stadium’s capacity will be increased to 105,000, the VIP and VVIP area will be revamped, there will be a 30 thousand square meter roof cover full of solar panels, alongside a host of other changes being made.

Club president Joan Laporta has said that “Barcelona will have the best stadium in the world” once the renovation is complete around November 2024.

The time when English teams were banned from playing in the Champions League ❎🇬🇧⚽
On June the 2nd, 1985, UEFA banned English teams from competing in Europe. The ban followed the Heysel Stadium disaster in Brussels just four days prior on the night of the European Cup final between Juventus and Liverpool.
An hour before kick-off, a bunch of drunk Liverpool fans barged through the wall separating the two sets of supporters and attacked the Juventus fans, who attempted to retreat, and as a result of the roughhouse, the wall behind them collapsed. About 600 people were injured due to this, 39 of whom succumbed to their injuries. 32 of those people were Juventus fans, while the other 7 were bystanders.
Subsequently, UEFA slapped a ban on English teams, barring them from playing in Europe. At first, the ban was indefinite, but it ended up lasting 5 years, except for Liverpool, who had to serve a 6-year ban, because of the handful of supporters’ actions that night in Brussels.

Four more teams and one giant league table—the new Champions League format is far more concerning than confusing. As explained in our previous story, each team has to play at least two or four extra matches to qualify for the knockout stage. The new Swiss model could drastically impact certain clubs that are already struggling to cope with a congested season, especially the Premier League teams. Pep Guardiola expressed his discontent with excessive matches earlier this year, saying, “It’s getting worse”. In today’s world, where every match is crucial for a club’s sporting and financial success, keeping players fit throughout the season is becoming increasingly important. Defending the new format, UEFA argued that it will make the Champions League more open, competitive, and exciting. The fans will be able to enjoy 189 matches instead of 125, and the Champions League will make an extra €1 billion per season. But at what expense? Only time will tell.

The UEFA Champions League is set to undergo a major revamp next season and here is everything you need to know. The total number of participating teams will expand to 36 from 32. Instead of eight groups of four teams each, there will be only one big league table. Each team will play four home and four away games. To decide who plays against whom, 36 teams will be divided into four pots of nine according to the club coefficients. Each club will be drawn to play against two teams from each pot, excluding teams from the same association. Following this group stage, the top 8 teams will advance directly to the round of 16, while teams ranked 9th to 24th will undergo a rigorous two-legged playoff round to secure their spot in the next stage. Unlike the current format, there will be no drop-down to the Europa League. The knockout stage, however, is set to remain the same.

In 2020, Wembley completed a £9 million upgrade, including a brand-new England men's first-team dressing room—designed with two crucial features requested by then-Three Lions manager Gareth Southgate himself.

Nine years ago, the same Pamplona side was on the verge of bankruptcy when they were struggling in the second division. The beautiful lights of Bayern Munich’s home, the Allianz Arena, were actually a solution to a practical problem. Before shifting to their new home in 2005, Bayern used to play their home games at the Olympiastadion, which they also shared with TSV 1860 Munich. While planning, it was decided that the new stadium would be used by both clubs, which raised a unique challenge. How do you build a stadium with two different colour themes? To overcome this, the architects came up with an innovative solution. They covered the entire structure with inflated ETFE plastic panels, which could change colours, turning the stadium into a vibrant display of red and white for Bayern Munich matches, blue and white for TSV 1860 Munich, and even other colours for special events. However, facing bankruptcy in 2006, 1860 had to sell their 50% share to their rivals. Bayern eventually terminated 1860's rental agreement, taking complete ownership of the stadium in 2017.

Here is the story of an Indian footballer who rejected Arsenal to fulfil his father’s wish. Born in 1918, Talimeren Ao captivated football fans with his skill and determination. Ao’s reputation as a talented player earned him a place in the Mohun Bagan squad in 1943. He went on to lead the club years later. Talimeren was the first-ever captain of independent India in an official international match at the 1948 London Olympics. Interestingly, on his way back, Ao received an offer that any footballer would dream of—a chance to play for the legendary Arsenal Football Club. The Indian, however, had different plans. Talimeren saw his father die of typhoid when he was young, and his father’s last wish was to see him as a doctor. Ao remembered his promise to his late father and turned down the offer. Instead, he chose to continue his career in medicine. Dr. Talimeren Ao completed his MBBS in 1950 and spent the rest of his life serving his countrymen. A true legend on and off the pitch.

According to a report published by Off the Pitch in 2022, Atalanta emerged as the most financially robust club in Europe. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the club registered a profit for the sixth year in a row and accumulated over €175 million in net profits. Interestingly, the Italian club’s key to success lies in its exceptional scouting system. From 2016 to 2021, Atalanta made almost €250 million in profits from player sales while continuously improving its on-field performances. The club qualified for UEFA competitions for five consecutive seasons, which saw its revenue triple during this period. Nevertheless, the club remained sensible with its expenses. Atalanta’s 47.4% wage-to-turnover ratio in 2021 was by far the lowest in Serie A.

Modern football has witnessed an escalation in transfer fees, with astronomical figures being exchanged to acquire coveted talents. To keep the clubs financially sustainable and maintain competitiveness in the league, the Premier League introduced Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations. Under the FFP rules, a team could register a maximum loss of £105 million over the previous three seasons, making it difficult for them to make big-money moves to acquire top talents. However, Chelsea's management came up with a clever strategy to spend over £500 million in transfers last season. The Blues decided to offer extraordinary long-term contracts to their new signings. This allowed the club to spread the transfer fees over the contract duration, using "amortisation." By doing so, Chelsea dodged the FFP regulations, but the strategy could also backfire in the long run. If a player fails to match expectations, he could be a huge financial liability for years to come.

I have met several footballers complaining of pain in their shins, knees, ankles, and hip joints. In fact, I suffered from pain in my joints for years. After spending months and a lot of money on physiotherapy and medication, I found out that I had been making one big mistake. It has nothing to do with diet. It has nothing to do with training either. The real problem was football studs. Most footballers (excluding professionals) play and train on hard grounds without any grass and high-quality turfs. Football studs don't provide any cushion, putting a lot of stress on their joints, which causes pain. Now here's the solution: Football trainers. Trainers not only provide cushion but also give you a better grip on hard ground. As soon as I replaced studs with trainers, my joint pain was gone. Now here's a pro tip. If the budget allows, I recommend you buy a set of football studs and trainers of the same brand, same model, and same size. This will allow you the flexibility to switch your footwear seamlessly according to the surface. You can wear trainers for training and studs for matchdays. This worked for me, and I am sure this will work for you as well.

In simple terms, it means that no single entity or investor can own more than 50% plus one share of a club’s voting rights. However, there are some exceptions. If a company or investor has continuously supported a club for over 20 years, they can acquire majority ownership with approval from the German Football League (DFL), like in the case of Bayer Leverkusen, VfL Wolfsburg, and TSG Hoffenheim. Although Red Bull does not have a 20-year history of supporting Leipzig, they obtained an exception by reforming the club’s ownership and establishing a membership structure that includes fan representation. The rule promotes increased fan involvement and prioritises the interests of supporters by keeping ticket prices in check. Nevertheless, it also leaves the German clubs disadvantaged in the player transfer market due to limited external support.

As people get paid to donate blood in Germany, several fans donated blood and contributed the amount collected to save the club. Four years later, the ageing stadium terraces jeopardised the club's licence. In an extraordinary display of unity, 2,500 Union fans volunteered and put in a combined 140,000 hours of work to renovate the stadium, cutting costs and ensuring the club's survival.

West Ham hammered out a stupendous London Stadium deal with the government in 2013. Originally built for the 2012 London Olympics, the 60,000-seater venue is the fourth-largest stadium in the Premier League. According to the 99-year lease agreement, the Hammers contributed £15 million as a one-off stadium redevelopment cost and accepted £2.5 million as yearly rent, which was increased to £3.6 million per year in 2022. The club keeps the entire ticket revenue, while the income from other sources is shared. In return, the government looks after the operations, from cleaning and maintenance to goalposts and corner flags. Interestingly, the initial construction cost of the stadium was £486 million, and a further £323 million was invested largely from public funds to make it suitable for football. West Ham’s home still remains a burden for the taxpayers, as the government registered a net loss of £31.1 million from running the stadium in 2022.

All major football clubs have academies, but not Brentford. After facing a lot of opposition, the Bees decided to shut down their academy in 2016, citing that investing £2 million per year is bad for business. Instead of competing against top clubs for academy players, the club established a reserve team. The Brentford B team is made up of 17–21-year-old players released from Premier League academies and talents from undervalued overseas markets. It has its own football calendar, which includes friendlies against teams like Manchester United, Liverpool, and Bayern Munich. The club’s experiment has been quite successful so far, with over 20 players graduating to the first team. The most prolific of them, Chris Mepham, was sold to Bournemouth for £12 million in 2019. However, as per the Premier League’s latest youth development regulations, Brentford needs to reopen its academy before the start of the 2024–25 season. Whether it will be with or without their reserve team, only time will tell.

15 April 1989 is regarded as one of the darkest dates in the history of football. 97 Liverpool supporters lost their lives as a result of the human crush that happened during the FA Cup semi-final tie between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest at Sheffield Wednesday’s Hillsborough Stadium. Initially, the police blamed fans, citing hooliganism and drunkenness as the causes of the incident. However, justice was served in 2012, when the police match commander, David Duckenfield, finally admitted his mistake. With thousands of fans yet to enter the stadium just before kickoff, David ordered his team to open the exit gates. This led to overcrowding in the stands, and people started suffocating. Fans in the front rows were trampled and crushed against the fences. Since the Hillsborough disaster, the club has always shown solidarity with those who perished and their families. A mark of memory on the back of every Liverpool jersey symbolises that they will never walk alone.

Unlike most countries, where a football league typically runs for nine months, the Indian Super League finishes in less than six months. Many, including Stimac, believe that the main reason behind the curtailed football season is IPL. Interestingly, Star Network owns the TV broadcasting rights of IPL and ISL, and having two separate windows minimises audience distribution and maximises revenue for the company. However, this is drastically impacting football development in India. International matches are not so frequent in football, and its popularity mainly relies on club competitions. As seen in European countries, the best way to promote football is by having a properly structured domestic season and creating a fan culture. "India is blessed to have a sport as popular as cricket, but football shouldn’t suffer because of it," the Croatian insisted.

Roberto Mancini surprised everyone by substituting goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma with veteran Salvatore Sirigu in the 89th minute of the final group stage encounter between Italy and Wales at the Euro 2020. With the Italians leading 1-0 and already qualified for the Round of 16, the Azzurri manager took the opportunity to ensure that 25 out of the 26 squad members have been on the pitch in the competition. The only player who remained without any playing time was third-choice goalkeeper Alex Meret. Interestingly, Mancini’s class act was inspired by the biggest regret of his life. At the 1990 FIFA World Cup, Roberto was the only member of the Italian team not to receive any playing time. What happened with him as a player, he didn’t let it happen as a manager. Manchester City has been charged by the Premier League for breaching more than 100 financial rules since the Abu Dhabi takeover in 2008. According to the latest investigation, the money coming from the owners, which should count as equity, was used to artificially inflate the commercial revenue in the books, especially through the Etihad Airways sponsorship deal. Also, the managers were given contracts from other companies owned by the club owners to deflate the club’s operational costs. Apparently, the citizens manipulated the club's finances to abide by UEFA’s Financial Fair Play regulations. In 2020, UEFA handed Manchester City a 2-year ban from European competitions for breaching FFP regulations. However, the decision was later overturned by the Court of Arbitration for Sport. If found guilty, the club could face punishments ranging from warnings and fines to points deduction, stripping of their titles, and possible expulsion from the Premier League.

In the summer of 2014, the Eredivisie side Heracles Almelo approached sports analytics company Scisports to find a young centre forward who was good in the penalty box and could also play as a target man up top. Having two strikers already, the club could only afford a player on loan or a free transfer. After applying several filters to Scisports’ extensive player database, the reserve striker of Dutch second-division team FC Emmen stood out. His name was Wout Weghorst.
