Ep 260: How To Backup and Digitize All Your Old Sentimental Photos (with Miss Freddy)13 Mar 202500:53:11

Professional photo organizer Casey von Stein (aka Miss Freddy) is BACK and this time she's helping us handle all those old, sentimental photos we all have stuffed in boxes in a closet somewhere.

Miss Freddy is answering my questions on how to make the physical photos into digital files and then how to organize and back them up online so we never have to worry they'll be lost or damaged in the future. She also says something to me about the 30,000 photos I have stored on my phone that might have just changed my life.

Ep 182: 10 Things About 10 Years of Therapy15 Aug 202301:11:49

This episode is for the therapy-curious and therapy champions.

Ten years ago this summer, I was in one of the lowest points of my life. I had a toddler and a baby, was grieving the death of a loved one, the diagnosis of another loved one, and the near-fatal crisis of yet another loved one. My husband was away making a movie, so I was solo parenting and circumstantially very isolated during a rainy season that had flooded our home.

And also....I had just started therapy for the first time.

I needed the therapy. Making that phone call was one of the best decisions I've ever made. But as many people will tell you: it often gets (a lot) worse before it gets better.

In this episode, I'm sharing 10 Things About Therapy that I've learned or noticed or want to share after 10 years of being on this journey.

There are practical tips and also my personal stories. This is completely my own experience and not meant to be prescriptive or authoritative - just me, sharing my stuff.

BONUS: What Drives You with Kevin Miller11 Aug 202301:01:43

Kevin Miller is a former pro athlete, respected personal development guide, top-ranking podcast host, published author, and father of nine who has devoted himself to helping people elevate their personal experience and improve the way they show up for others.

After our fantastic conversation a few months ago on his show The Self Helpful Podcast, I knew I wanted to talk to him about his new book What Drives You

One of the things I've been working on personally this summer is examining and resetting some of the systems in my life, mostly professionally related, but also personally. This book and this conversation came at the perfect time. Identifying what motivates you can be such a key to your success.

BONUS: Remaining You While Raising Them with Alli Worthington04 Aug 202300:46:11

I met author Alli Worthington over a decade ago when we were both in the mommy blogging world, and I've long looked up to her as an entreprenuer and innovator in the online space. And while I was a mommy blogger back then who didn't write much about motherhood, Alli was creating conferences, writing books, and raising FIVE boys and a stepdaughter.

So of course with that kind of expertise, I am excited to share this conversation about motherhood that's aimed at the MOTHER. Alli's latest book Remaining You While Raising Them is the opposite of an instruction manual for parenting, which is what makes it so refreshing.

In this episode, Alli and I talk about mom guilt, real self care, and the different ways social media and the likes can make us feel like we’re not measuring up. We also talk about our identities as mothers, the magic question Alli wants women to get in the habit of asking themselves, and why it’s important to allow our kids to see us get angry sometimes.

Learn more about Alli Worthington

Buy Remaining You While Raising Them

Alli Worthington is known for her straight-talking encouragement and practical tools that help women reach their dreams in business and life. She is a speaker, podcaster, author, and life and business coach who launched Called Creatives, a cohort of women speakers and writers. Alli lives with her husband, Mark, and their five sons outside of Nashville with the only golden retriever who refuses to retrieve.

REPLAY: Intentions, Affirmations, and Vision Boards, Oh My!01 Aug 202300:33:53
As we near the 200th episode of 10 Things To Tell You, we're using this summer to pull a few episodes out of the archives from the first year of the show.

August feels like the second "new year" on the calendar. Even if you're no longer super aware of the school calendar as a student, parent, or teacher, it still feels like a fresh start after the summer and heading into the last half of the year.

This episode is for you if you’re thinking about setting intentions, starting affirmations, and creating a vision board for the new year. In this replay episode from the end of 2019, I’m sharing my experience with setting intentions, writing down affirmations, and creating a vision board for the future.

Let me be clear that I am no expert on any of these things, but I do believe that something goes on in your consciousness when you stay open to receiving what the world has to offer (instead of closing yourself off from anything you don’t understand), and by putting in place a few practices that might positively affect your mood, spirit, and actions.

Ep 180: Four Metaphors for Turning 44 (a birthday episode)27 Jun 202300:38:00

June is my birthday month, and every year I create a personal episode for the occasion. This year, instead of waxing nostaligic or sharing what I've learned in the last year, I'm taking us on a journey.

Of metaphors.

I'm sharing four metaphors that feel especially apt for life right now:

One Point (clap clap) At A Time

There are years where you wander and years when you're on the road

Accelerate through the turn

You are not lost

I hope you take something from this episode that helps you on your path.

Ep 179: Best Books of 2023 (So Far) with Yasmin Dunn and Stephanie Newman-Smith20 Jun 202302:03:38

Instead of waiting for the end of the year to talk about our favorite books, my real life book club members Yasmin Dunn and Stephanie Newman-Smith and I decided we should have a mid-year meeting to discuss some of the great things we've read in this first half of 2023.

We talk about the best novels, memoirs, personal growth, and general nonfiction books that stand out, and even share some of the personal things going on in our lives that have affected our reading habits lately.

We also unintentionally talk a lot about Hollywood in this episode - where the three of us all live and work - discussing the writer's strike and multiple celebrity memoirs.

JOIN SECRET STUFF NOW FOR BONUS CONTENT

Of course, we talked for hours. And there was still more we had to say. Check out the Secret Stuff bonus episode for even more book talk, including the books that haven't worked for us this year.

BONUS: The Elevation Approach with Tina Wells16 Jun 202300:41:14

I am coming off of an intense season where the work-life balance scale was tipped firmly in the work direction. I know the ebb and flow of this equation and I have come to understand that sometimes imbalance is exactly what is needed while tending to something important. But none of us want to feel out of balance for long.

This is why I loved chatting with my guest Tina Wells, author of the new book The Elevation Approach. Tina has had an entrepreneurial journey like no other and in the book she redefines this idea of work-life balance by introducing the concept of work life harmony.

In this conversation we talk about the difference between balance and harmony as it relates to our very full lives. She shares her elevation approach, the routines and rituals that have helped her as she works towards harmony, and how this can affect your relationships on this journey.

Tina Wells is a business strategist, advisor, author, and the founder of RLVNT Media. Tina is also the author of 16 books, including the best-selling tween fiction series Mackenzie Blue and its 2020 award-winning spinoff series, The Zee Files. Her new book, The Elevation Approach, is out now.

Ep 178: Finding Identity Where You Live (a conversation about homes and hometowns with Elizabeth Passarella)13 Jun 202301:01:58

Elizabeth Passarella and I have a lot in common: we're both authors, and mothers, and both moved from small, southern cultures to big cities to become writers. I spent my twenties working in reality tv while she spent the same time period as an editor at the top beauty magazines.

And then, having never met but with many mutal friends and chasing similar literary dreams, we released both of our books just weeks away from one another - first in 2021 and then this spring of 2023. On such familiar paths but on opposite coasts, it felt like the most natural thing in the world to finally record a conversation together.

Elizabeth Passarella is a contributing editor for Southern Living and former editor at Real Simple and Vogue. She has spent more than 20 years writing about food, travel, home design, and parenting in a variety of magazines. She is the author of two books, Good Apple: Tales of an Southern Evangelical in New York and her latest It Was an Ugly Couch Anyway: and Other Thoughts On Moving Forward. She grew up in Memphis, Tennessee, and currently lives in New York City with her husband and three children.

Elizabeth and I talk about her experience  moving from the south to New York City, what happened when she bought an apartment in her building that belonged to a hoarder, and the ways she is able to write so honestly about her family. I truly enjoy Elizabeth and her writing and I know you will love this conversation too.

Ep 177: How To Find Your Signature Style06 Jun 202300:40:33

Do you have a signature style? Do you want to have one?

I have a few signature styles, things that I feel good in, looks that I'm known for, a style of expressing on the outside how I feel on the inside: bold lipstick, head scarves, and sweatshirts. These things anchor my favorite outfits.

JOIN SECRET STUFF FOR THE JUNE STYLE SYMPOSIUM

In this episode, I'm taking away some of the myths of signature styles. They don't have to be forever choices. They don't have to be considered classic. They don't even have to be flattering. (Yes, really!)

Then I share three steps for finding your own signature style. (Hint: you start in your own closet.)

Ep 176: The Mentor (a Secret Tapes conversation with Cyndi Finkle)30 May 202301:22:51

When I sat down to write The Mentor chapter of The Life Council: 10 Friends Every Woman Needs, I thought I was going to reveal that The Mentor was the seat that has remained empty on my own life council.

But as I wrote, I realized that I have had mentors along the way, women who have lit the path the ahead of me and shown me who I wanted to be. Chief among those is my friend Cyndi Finkle - a woman who so greatly influenced me when I moved to Los Angeles that I can trace so many of my decisions to her and her example.

GET THE SECRET TAPES NOW

When Cyndi and I sat down to record this conversation for the Secret Tapes series, we had barely seen each other in nearly ten years, even though we live within miles of one another. It was a chance for me to tell her how much she meant to me during the most important year of my life, and to hear her side of what it felt like to take a 22-year-old sorority girl fresh out of Oklahoma under her wing.

This conversation is part of my SECRET TAPE series - 10 episodes of conversations with some of the people I write about in The Life Council. The Secret Tapes were created as a preorder bonus for those who purchased The Life Council ahead of its release date, but I am opening the series back up for a limited time for those who only discovered The Life Council after it was published.

Ep 175: How To Have Hard Conversations With Friends (with Danielle Bayard Jackson)23 May 202300:45:33

Over the last few months of talking about the many layers to adult friendship as I promote my new book The Life Council: 10 Friends Every Woman Needs, I've received so many questions about friendship conflict and how to navigate it with grace or end a friendship with love.

I've answered these questions to the best of my ability with my own life experience, but I also know when it's time to call in a certified expert. Danielle Bayard Jackson is a female friendship coach and educator who speaks nationally about the science of women’s platonic connections. Her coaching business, Friend Forward, is dedicated to teaching women how to create and maintain better female friendships.

In this episode, Danielle gives us actual scripts for how to start those hard conversations with friends. I hung onto every word.

We all have friendship conflict sometimes and get tongue-tied or scared when we need to say the hard thing. These tips and thoughts from Danielle will give you concrete take aways for your next ackward yet necessary conversation.

BONUS: Slow Growth Equals Strong Roots (a conversation with Mary Marantz)22 May 202300:51:28

There is something about Mary Marantz’s story and writing that I just connect so deeply with. Her memoir DIRT was one of my favorite reads of 2021 (listen to our conversation about it here) and she is back on the show to talk about her newest book, Slow Growth Equals Strong Roots, which came out last fall.

In this episode, Mary and I talk about striving to be the most put together person in the room in the pursuit of perfection and acceptance, feeling like we need to prove that we deserve whatever success or opportunity we have, and how our little girl selves would be so happy with who we have become. (And how even still we wonder what it would be like if our lives were different.)

Ep 174: 3 Things I've Learned While Working With A Business Coach (a conversation with Retha Nichole)16 May 202301:05:47

Eighteen months ago I started working with a business coach. It was the end of 2021 and I was, frankly, falling apart in several ways. In an effort to make something (anything) work, I hired business coach Retha Nichole to help me figure out how to prioritize the various aspects of my online work. I wanted to feel less scattered and I wanted to make more money.

At first, I felt embarrassed that I needed outside help with my business. And it wasn't an overnight fix. It has taken me almost two years (and multiple launches) to see all that has come out of this relationship, both emotionally and financially.

In this episode, I'm sharing the three most important things I've learned while working with business coach Retha Nichole:

  • How to prioritize
  • How to plan
  • How to make more money

In turn, Retha shares the main reasons people reach out to hire her. This conversation is not meant to sound like an infomercial - I want you to listen as a way to opening your mind to outside help in areas of your life that aren't working.

BONUS: Becoming A Romance Writer06 Dec 202400:58:04

My friend Nora Dahlia Zelevansky is a journalist, a novelist, a wellness writer, and now she's a romance author! As we celebrate the release of her latest book PICK UP, Nora and I chat about her writing trajectory, the differences between publishing and marketing the romance genre, and why she decided to write this book using a different name.

We also talk about how fiction helps us process our pasts, and especially how our high school selves might not have grasped the full story, and how we wrestle with that in adulthood.

So many aspects to this great conversation!

Ep 173: The Life Council Book Club (Live Replay)09 May 202301:04:23

My new book The Life Council: 10 Friends Every Woman Needs came out last month, and one of the greatest pieces of feedback I've already received is that it would make a great book club pick!

I agree wholeheartedly - I envisioned both of my books being read with a friend, partner, or group. Which is exactly why I offered a book club as a preorder bonus and why I chose The Life Council as the April book club pick for Secret Stuff (my membership community).

JOIN SECRET STUFF HERE

Today's episode is a live replay of the Secret Stuff book club meeting. (Recorded and replayed with permission.) All the meetings for Secret Stuff are held on zoom, with optional participation from members, and this the best work I'm doing online right now. We talk about all kinds of things together (not just books) and it's just so meaningful to connect twice a month with this community. So you can imagine how extra special it was to meet and discuss The Life Council.

If you haven't read The Life Council, you'll still appreciate this candid conversation about friendship, including our struggles and joys. If you've already read The Life Council and are ready to talk about it, I hope this episode is a stand-in for the types of conversations I hope will come out of reading this book.

BONUS: Create Anyway (A conversation about art and perfectionism with Ashlee Gadd)05 May 202301:09:32

As someone who has been writing and creating on the internet for over a decade, I know first hand all the challenges that one can face in their pursuit of creative work. The desire to create is there, but the obstacles are real, especially if you become a parent and feel like your time, resources and energy are limited. My guest, Ashlee Gadd, is the perfect person to speak to his as she has just released a book called Create Anyway: The Joy of Pursuing Creativity in the Margins of Motherhood

Ashlee and I ended up talking for two hours about art and perfectionism, how it takes a village to create good work, and the social media of it all. We also took a tangent and had a fascinating discussion about paid communities (including Patreon - where I host Secret Stuff), and metrics and some of the more in-the-weeds parts of content creation. That part of the conversation will be available to Secret Stuff members only.

I felt so inspired after talking with Ashlee. You don’t have to be a writer or online creator to enjoy this conversation. All of us are wired for some sort of creative expression and life can always get in the way of that. You can buy Ashlee’s book Create Anyway wherever you buy books. I hope this conversation inspires you to pursue your own creative outlet with abandon.

Ep 172: 4 Questions To Tap Into Your 10-year-old Self02 May 202300:41:29

As I head back to my home state of Oklahoma this week to promote The Life Council, I'm feeling nostalgic in every way.  Even as life has marched forward, and I entered my twenties, then my thirties, and now my forties, I have found it useful to tap back into the childhood version of me. It reminds me who I am in my core and it reminds me where I came from.

And sometimes, even as I evolve in a positive way, I need that reminder of where I started. I want to tap into that original spirit.

This episode has four questions to ask yourself about your childhood self. We're going to talk about:

Place

People

Our bodies

Our dreams

Maybe you think about your childhood self all the time. Maybe it's been a long time since you really remembered that version of you.

This episode and these questions will bring you back to who you were when you were young.

BONUS: FRIENDSHIP STORIES: Serendipity (Caroline's Story)28 Apr 202300:40:27

Welcome to the final episode in my Friendship Stories series.

My guest today is someone you might recognize if you've ever emailed or DM'd the show, or you've just heard me talk about her giant contribution to 10 Things To Tell You, my book launches, and all other behind-the-scenes operations around here: Caroline!

In this episode about the serendipity of friendship, Caroline tells us the story of her longtime friend Judi. After Judi experiences a tragic loss, Caroline was there for her when she needed it most. This is a story about the gift of friendship and how friends help us navigate life’s ups and downs. Throughout the course of this conversation Caroline also shares about her twin sister, Jill, which is a friendship story in and of itself.

Caroline’s multiple friendship experiences were the perfect ones to cap off this Friendship Stories series because I think it highlights the width and breadth of good friendship and its importance in our lives.

This episode concludes the Friendship Stories series, which I loved putting together as part of my research and then launch of my new book The Life Council: 10 Friends Every Woman Needs.

BONUS: FRIENDSHIP STORIES: A Bridge Across Cultural Differences (Carol & Gloria's Story)23 Apr 202300:35:16

Welcome to another episode in my Friendship Stories series.

Carol and Gloria's friendship spans a few cultural differences, including race (Carol is Asian and Gloria is Black) and a large age gap (they have twenty years between them). In this episode, Carol speaks candidly about how these differences affects their friendship and bring both challenges but also beautiful gifts.

This conversation is also one about the importance of openness and vulnerability in friendship. I do want to say that as a white woman hosting this conversation, my job here was to listen to their lived experiences that are so different from my own. Carol and Gloria listened to this episode after we recorded it to make sure that their perspectives were represented.

Carol and Gloria’s friendship definitely qualifies as unique and I think you’ll enjoy hearing about it.

The FRIENDSHIP STORIES series is a set of conversations I had while writing my new book The Life Council: Every Woman Needs

BONUS: FRIENDSHIP STORIES: The Breakup (JeriLynne's Story)21 Apr 202300:45:07

Welcome to another episode in my Friendship Stories series.

Over the last few months, we’ve heard a number of uplifting stories about unique and transformative friendships in this series. But today’s episode is about an aspect of friendship that is painful and rarely discussed: the friendship break up.

My guest, JeriLynne, shares that when her marriage ended, there was collateral damage in the form of friendship loss as well. That friendship breakup left her without real closure and she continues to struggle to be vulnerable in friendships.

While it’s certainly easier to talk about all the positive aspects of friendship, I think it’s also important to discuss these harder, more painful parts of these formative relationships. JeriLynne’s experience is significant and unfortunately a very real part of these friendship.

I write about friendship breakups and friendship loss in The Life Council in a chapter called The Empty Chair.

Ep 170: The Old Friend (a conversation with Shauna Niequist)18 Apr 202300:56:53

In my new book The Life Council: 10 Friends Every Woman Needs, I write about how the "old friend" doesn't necessarily mean than you've known one another for decades. All that is required to hold that Life Council seat is to have a friend who has known you from one version of yourself into another. That actual timeline might vary.

But Shauna Niequist is one of my oldest friends however you measure it. We met in the late 90's working at summer camp, where (as I wrote about in my first book Share Your Stuff), I learned from Shauna a different way to walk in the world than I had previously been exposed to.

For twenty-five years, Shauna has been a friend, role model, mentor, and, yes, even a fellow obsessive as we discuss in this episode.

Shauna Niequist is the New York Times bestselling author of Cold Tangerines, Bittersweet, Bread & Wine, Savor, Present Over Perfect, and I Guess I Haven't Learned That Yet. She is married to Aaron, and they live in New York City with their two sons.

To listen to the full reading tangent Shauna and I take in this conversation, you'll have to join my Secret Stuff community.

BONUS: FRIENDSHIP STORIES: Island Life (Kammy's Story)14 Apr 202300:29:08

Welcome to another episode in my Friendship Stories series.

The childhood that my guest Kammy is going to describe in this conversation is unlike any I've ever heard. She grew up on a remote island just two square miles in size, without much contact with the rest of the world. Looking back, Kammy can see that the friendships from this time in her life shaped her relationships to come, and the bond she shares with other children from the island is unrivaled.  This is a fascinating conversation so different from the rest of our Friendship Stories.

The Friendship Stories series came from the dozens of interviews I conducted while writing my new book The Life Council: 10 Friends Every Woman Needs.

Ep 169: Battle Buddies (with Beth Silvers and Sarah Stewart Holland of Pantsuit Politics)11 Apr 202300:58:43

In the framework of my new book The Life Council: 10 Friends Every Woman Needs, the duo behind the Pantsuit Politics podcast could be considered Business Besties or Old Friends, but I see them primarily as BATTLE BUDDIES.

Beth Silvers and Sarah Stewart Holland have spent nearly ten years publicly discussing the American political landscape on the podcast Pantsuit Politics, and, well, you can imagine why I see them as having walked through a battle together.

Somehow, though, these two women have navigated these conversations with integrity, grace, and - especially - nuance.

I've been a fan of Beth & Sarah for years now, and respect their work so much. It was honor to have them on the show to talk about their friendship and partnership.

I hope this episode inspires you to share your own favorite Taylor Swift memories, songs, lyrics, and more.

Ep 166: How To Write A Book (in 10 steps)21 Mar 202300:57:21

My second book The Life Council: 10 Friends Every Woman Needs comes out in just two weeks, and so I have writing on my mind.

PREORDER THE LIFE COUNCIL NOW

Becoming an author has been my life's biggest dream since I was in elementary school, but I was in my 40's and had been writing professionally for over a decade before it finally happened. And, truthfully, my first two books are not what I ever pictured myself writing!

I created this episode because I really wish someone had broken down the process of writing a book for me years ago. And because I think a lot of people want to write a book, but have no idea where to start.

Although the 10 steps I walk through here follow my own process of writing nonfiction, a lot of what I'm sharing here could apply to any sort of creative endeavor. I'm talking about preparation, mindset, rituals, and radical honesty.

How To Write A Book (in 10 Steps):

  1. Be honest about the WHY (and if a book is the best format to tell your story)

  2. Decide what you’re really trying to say

  3. Outline, outline, outline

  4. Give yourself a deadline

  5. Find your rituals

  6. Measure something

  7. Write for yourself, rewrite for your audience

  8. Use an editor and don’t take the edits personally

  9. Let the book become what it’s supposed to be

  10. Call it done

BONUS: FRIENDSHIP STORIES: Pen Pals. (Sarah's Story)10 Mar 202300:21:43

Welcome to another episode in my Friendship Stories series.

When I was young, I always dreamed of having a pen pal. It seemed like something straight out of a movie! Well wait until you hear Sarah's story...it really is like some magical fiction.

In the years before the internet connected us all, Sarah and her childhood pen pal exchanged hundreds of letters. But when they went to college, they naturally lost touch. A very serendipitous mutual aquaintance reconnected Sarah and her long lost letter writing friend and THEN....well, you just have to listen to find out.

I just loved this story of friendship evolving through pen and paper across the decades.

Ep 247: The Perfectionist's Guide To Losing Control (a book club meeting with author Katherine Morgan Schafler)28 Nov 202400:58:09

One of the books that has made the biggest impression on me in the last few years is The Perfectionist's Guide To Losing Control by Katherine Morgan Schafler. I have talked about this book EVERYWHERE and insisted that even people who do not self-identify as "perfectionists" would get something out of it.

So you can imagine that I was thrilled with the Secret Stuff members chose TPGTLC as a book club pick and I was doubly thrilled when author Katherine Morgan Schafler agreed to attend our regular monthly book club meeting to discuss it.

JOIN THE SECRET STUFF BOOK CLUB HERE

This episode is a replay of our book club discussion that was held over zoom, where Katherine and I held a great conversation about some of the major points of the book (including the five different types of "perfectionists"), and then Secret Stuff members got to ask her questions.

I loved our conversation so much that I wanted everyone to hear it (and to read the book!). If you like these types of book club meetings, consider joining the Secret Stuff Book Club for 2025. We always have the best meetings with thoughtful conversations.

Ep 162: 10 Ways To Handle Overwhelm21 Feb 202300:50:11

We all have seasons of overwhelm, whether it's a packed schedule, an insane To Do list, or events that require a lot of emotional processing. I've been navigating my own overwhelm in the last few months while juggling a larger-than-normal workload with travel and family obligations. So I sat down to make a list of the things that are helping me handle it.

Circumstances are often largely out of our control, but we can still find pockets of peace that keep us in the present and help us maintain a clear mind.

I made this episode for me, but I hope it helps you, too.

BONUS: 4 Ways To Model Well-Being For Generations To Come with Toye Penny17 Feb 202300:33:01

In this busy season I’m so aware of how neglectful I can get about my own self care. When life feels crazy, the first thing to fall to the bottom of my priority list is ME. And I’m becoming increasingly aware of what I’m teaching my own children in this realm.

So when Toye Penny reached out to share 4 ways to “Model Well-Being for Generations to Come” I knew I needed to hear what she had to say. Toye shares helpful, thoughtful and practical ways to love the next generation by loving ourselves well first.

Toye Penny is a Luxury Well-Being Strategist, Author of Love “Them”, Love You More, and creator of The Love You More Method℠. She specializes in helping High Performing CEO Moms put their oxygen mask on first so they can save everyone around them. Toye is a wife, mother to 3 daughters, and she seeks to intervene in women’s lives so children won't have to be the result of generational trauma passed down from their mothers. You can learn more about her work by going to ToyePenny.com.

I loved chatting with Toye and hope you take as much from this conversation as I did.
