1 More Thing Podcast #020: Ed Rush
Season 1 · Episode 20
mercredi 17 avril 2024 • Duration 01:08:03
30 years deep into a benchmark-setting career, drum & bass jungle producer Ed Rush has only just released his debut solo album... Truth be told? He was having too much fun collaborating to even consider one!
From his time with the pioneering No U-Turn collective to his enduring tenure with Optical and the Virus family, music has always been a social experience for the London artist but events in 2020 took Ed - real name Ben Settle - in a more introspective direction... And led to a new creative perspective on his art, himself and the scene.
Two years back into the turbulent post-covid raving landscape, with a growing renaissance for the heavy, tech-flavoured drum & bass and his and Optical's Virus label currently celebrating 25 years, Ed Rush finds himself in an exciting and energised position. The dust still settling on his Light Of The Void album - released on Black Sun Empire's label Blackout - Dave Columbo Jenkins caught up with him to discuss everything from drum & bass to delta waves to daddying and everything in between.

1 More Thing Podcast #012: Armanni Reign
Season 1 · Episode 12
dimanche 13 août 2023 • Duration 01:29:47
A journey from US to UK, from hip-hop to D&B... The latest episode of the 1 More Thing podcast is dedicated to none other than Armanni Reign.
Since he first picked up the mic in the 90s, Armanni has explored the full range of the rap terrain from street cyphers to some of the biggest stages in electronic music.
An MC pioneer in the US drum & bass movement since the early 2000s, and the very first American Metalheadz resident, Armanni's dexterous, intelligent and fiery flows have peppered every style imaginable. Most recently they've come full circle with his Last Rhetoric project, a collaboration with Bro Safari. Their album Old Tales is the most personal and accomplished body of work Armanni has created to date and continues to galvanise his status as one of the most versatile MCs across the electronic multiverse.
A self-described nerd, Armanni - or David Bruce if you'd like to be formal - approaches his craft with equal measures of science and creativity. A hugely humble, thoughtful and humorous artist, he joins 1 More Thing host Dave Columbo Jenkins to shed a little light on his journey so far, reflect on his deep love for hip-hop and discuss everything from the civil rights movement to mental health to the difference between being a David and a Dave.
As always, this one goes super deep. Get to know.

1 More Thing Podcast #010: Riya
Season 1 · Episode 10
jeudi 13 juillet 2023 • Duration 01:02:01
🎤 Next up in our series of deep discussions: Riya! 🎤
One of the hardest working, most dedicated and passionate artists you could ever wish to meet in drum & bass, Riya has been deeeeeeeeeeeeeep in the craft for longer than you may know.
From her earliest manoeouvres behind the scenes as a PR at labels such as C.I.A and Hospital and working at the iconic forum Dogs On Acid, Laura Pacheco's fingerprints have been all over the scene for the best part of 20 years.
As Riya she's been at the very forefront of the genre since 2009 working with some of the most respected names in the game, honing her craft as a songwriter and fighting for a valid space in a scene that hasn't always been particularly warm to crediting vocalists or welcoming to women.
The first vocalist in drum & bass to develop their own hybrid style of DJ/vocal set - an artform which is now common place and currently thriving - Riya has truly smashed down barriers. And continues to do so to this day...
Currently running Carnelian Music alongside her equally inspiring kindred spirit Collette Warren, Riya remains at the very forefront of the genre, fighting to create new space and opportunities for songwriters and vocalists within the scene.
Join Dave Columbo Jenkins as he asks Riya about her journey so far, her influences, upbringing, the art of songwriting and the challenges she's consistently risen to.
Big shouts to Euphonique for letting us use her studio to record this!
Riya & Collette Warren Feat Koherent - Carnelian (Phaction Remix) is out Friday July 14: https://lnk.to/CARNEL011

1 More Thing Podcast #009: Break
Season 1 · Episode 9
mercredi 14 juin 2023 • Duration 01:34:28
The deepest discussions in a Digital World
For our latest adventure in the realms of bass music, 1 More Thing welcomes the one and only Break.
Flexing a stylistic range that spans from soulful rollers to full-strength rave weapons, Break - AKA Charlie Bierman - is one of the most respected artists in his field, renowned for both a strong sense of musicianship and his technical abilities as an engineer.
2023 marks his 20th year as a recording artist and it might just be one of his busiest, too. Not only has he just released his fifth studio album Digital World, an album that's been celebrated universally across all facets of the ever-sprawling drum & bass scene, he's also just completed a coveted residency at the cult London rave spot XOYO.
With plenty more in store for the year, Break take the time to chat to 1 More Thing's Dave Columbo Jenkins about his journey so far while pausing to take in many other topics and ideas. From giving up weed to lockdown woes to the legacy and influence of the late, great and forever missed Singing Fats, Charlie goes in deep at every point in this rare moment of revelation. At one particular juncture he even agrees to set up a logistics company with Dave if the music fails him. Something tells us it won't!
As one of the few artists who's been able to deny the usual social media tactics, Break is a rare breed of artist who's not saturated our feeds with videos, memes and opinions. Besides his prolific output as an artist, his life remains shrounded in mystery, making this interview a genuinely unique moment to get acquainted with him on a much deeper level than usual.
We say this about all 1 More Thing podcast interviews but this one goes so deep! It's a beautiful situation. Huge shouts to Break for taking the time to chat to us!
Recorded over Zoom, May, 2023.

1 More Thing Podcast #008: Jaguar Skills
Season 1 · Episode 8
jeudi 18 mai 2023 • Duration 01:55:33
Not all heroes wear capes. Some of them wear masks and obsess about music at a painfully nerdy level…
Welcome to a brand new episode of the 1 More Thing Podcast, a place for deep and meaningful conversations with some of the interesting and inspiring souls in electronic music, hosted by Dave Columbo Jenkins.
This time we're chatting with Jaguar Skills. A man, a mystery, an absolute mixing machine. A dextrous detail-obssesed DJ who's spent his entire adult life digging impossibly deep into beats, joining dots you didn't even know existed.
What began as a deep love for hip-hop and an even deeper fear of getting a standard 9-5 has taken our masked protagonist to some of the wildest places any DJ can possibly imagine.
Since launching one of the UK's earliest hip-hop magazines in his teens he's embraced every opportunity he's ever been presented... From being given the keys to record label vaults and conjuring up new KRS-One bangers out of thin air to making Netflix theme tunes for renowned comedian TV shows or composing entire scores to films that only exist in his mind. As he explains himself; there are no limitations when you're driven by passion!
Yet for all his notoriety and profile, he remains pretty much anonymous. You may have heard him tell many musical tales on Radio 1 or any other high profile radio station. You may have seen him headline some of the biggest clubs and festivals around the world. Yet if he walked past you on the street, you wouldn't have a clue who he was.
His ninja-like facewear and his private nature have led to mammoth gaps on the global Jaguar Skills fact file... Until now.
This is by far the deepest and most revealing interview Jaguar Skills has ever done. Find out why he wears a mask, how he feels when he wears it and, for the first time ever, what happens behind it.
Recorded in February 2023 on Zoom. Trust us, this interview goes super deep!

mercredi 12 avril 2023 • Duration 01:28:41
No. More. Secrets!
Multi-disciplinary artist, teacher, entrepreneur, human being... Amit Kamboj joins Dave Columbo Jenkins for the latest episode of the 1 More Thing podcast.
Hugely respected as a pioneer who's been consistently at the forefront of bass culture, Amit takes a rare moment of time to look back and reflect.
Over the course of an hour and a half, we discuss his career, his roots and influences and his creative processes which have given him a unique reputation as an innovator and a community figurehead who wants to see and instigate positive change and progress for all. It's a repution that has led him to some inspiring places that most bass music producers could ever dream of; from working with orchestras to touring with Sonic Youth to remixing Herbie Hancock.
Now immersed in the physical art world, and using this new discipline to inspire and inform his music in a whole new way, Amit remains as inspired, innovated and forward-thinking as he did when he first emerged in the late 90s. Here's how he does it...

1 More Thing Podcast #005: J:Kenzo
Season 1 · Episode 5
jeudi 9 février 2023 • Duration 01:22:32
For the latest 1 More Thing podcast we join the dots between dubstep, garage and drum & bass with an original UK article... J:Kenzo.
The son of a DJ, brought up amid a rich culture of vinyl and digging, Kenzo's musical inspirations go back as far as he can possibly remember but truly took root when he first heard jungle in the mid 90s... And consequently blossomed when he first became a DJ in the late 90s.
On a mission to "play music for the people", J traversed the worlds of garage and drum & bass playing up and down the UK before being bitten by the then-burgeoning dubstep movement the mid 2000s and becoming part of the genre's earliest generations of pioneers, pushers and protagonists.
Gradually honing his minimal signature, Kenzo became one of the most consistent artists in dubstep from the late 2000s onwards. With his weekly radio show on Rinse and releases on key labels such as Tempa and Dub Police, J:Kenzo became a key player in dubstep's international explosion and found himself at the forefront of the US exodus as the genre rocketed to unparalleled EDM levels.
Dubstep's underground credibility was compromised during this point, but Kenzo maintained his own rep and stayed dedicated to minimal heavyweight dub-wise music.
One of the few first-wave artists who didn't leave the genre at the time, J:Kenzo was part of a movement of ardent dubstep craftsmen who helped to maintain the genre's deep roots and powerful cultural values. Staying true to the deeper side of the genre, he found space to encourage and champion like-minded leftfield dubstep artists on his label Artikal Music and bring in other elements and influences in his own productions... Including his original passion for jungle and drum & bass.
As dubstep has found its original foundation spirit once more, and started to develop a flourishing new generation of artists and fans, J:Kenzo remains on the forefront as relevant and inspired as he was back in the mid 2000s. Only now he has a whole other depth and duality to his output as he also runs a fine line in jungle records.
Chatting to 1 More Thing's Dave Columbo Jenkins on the eve of his release on Goldie's Metalheadz (a label he's coveted since his teens and never thought he'd release on) J:Kenzo takes the time to tell his story with more depth and detail than any other interview he's done before.
Enjoy!
