Overcoming Construction Hurdles: A Tale of Mid-Project Onboarding and Out-of-State Homeowners

Saison 1 · Épisode 36

June 20, 2023

Your Favorite Interior Design Podcast

S1 Ep36

In this episode, we discuss the challenges faced by Cross Construction while demolishing an old home and building a new one. Here are the key points we cover:

1. On-boarded mid-project: Cross Construction approached us for assistance while the project was already in full swing. The builder, Alex Cross, needed help with ordering materials for interior finishes. However, he lacked the necessary details such as quantities, trim pieces, and installation patterns. The interior design was not fully developed, and the existing team couldn't provide the required level of detail. We stepped in and created a comprehensive plan set, expanding the detailed elevations from 6 to 31, enabling Alex to proceed with the construction smoothly.

2. Out-of-State Homeowner: Since the property was a second home, the owners resided out of state. This posed challenges for the general contractor in filling in the gaps and presenting design options to the owner. As a builder, they were not equipped to provide remote services as they were the "boots on the ground." Leveraging our experience in working on out-of-state projects, we established streamlined communication channels and ensured a high-touch experience for the client, despite the geographical distance.

3. Critical Points in Building: Building a home for the first time can be a stressful experience. We highlight that there are critical junctures during the construction process that can expose weak links. In this case, incomplete design and inadequate communication channels hindered the progress. By addressing these challenges head-on and providing the necessary support, we helped strengthen the construction process and ensured a successful outcome for the homeowner.

Tune in to this episode as we dive deeper into the unique challenges faced during this project and explore strategies for overcoming obstacles in the construction industry. Whether you're a builder, homeowner, or simply interested in the construction process, this episode offers valuable insights and practical tips. Don't miss it!

Ep 034

Welcome to "Family Room Fails: My Top 3 Amateur Mistakes" podcast! In this episode, we delve into the common blunders many of us make when trying to create a stylish and functional family room. Join us as we explore three major pitfalls that can turn your space into an amateur design disaster.

First on the list is the classic mistake of "Furniture Under Arrest." While it may seem counterintuitive, pushing all your furniture against the walls can actually make your room feel disconnected and impersonal. We'll discuss why it's important to create cozy conversation areas and how to arrange your furniture to maximize flow and engagement.

Next up, we tackle the issue of "Path of Travel." We've all experienced that awkward moment of trying to navigate around furniture obstacles and walking in front of the TV right when the winning shot is made. We'll discuss the importance of considering traffic flow when positioning your pieces and offer practical tips on how to ensure a smooth and effortless movement within your family room.

Lastly, we dive into the realm of "Small Pillows." Believe it or not, the size of your throw pillows can greatly impact the overall aesthetic of your room. We'll explore why small, underwhelming pillows can undermine the design and discuss how to select the right size and pillow insert (filling) to add comfort and style to your space.

Join us as we learn from these amateur mistakes and uncover the secrets to transforming your family room into a welcoming and visually pleasing sanctuary. Whether you're a design enthusiast or just looking for some practical tips, "Family Room Fails: My Top 3 Amateur Mistakes" will provide you with insights and inspiration to avoid these blunders and create a space you can be proud of. You won’t want to miss it!

Designing Interiors with a Furniture-First Approach

At Stuart Design Co, we start all projects, commercial and residential with a space plan, or furniture layout. We don't select the actual pieces, but we insert furniture first for the following reasons;

  1. Walking Patterns; Understand Traffic Flow
  2. Doors; How are the doors functioning; are they banging into each other, etc?
  3. Windows; Does window placement support how you're going to use each space; too high, too low, etc.?
  4. Electrical; Opportunities for floor outlets, etc.
