Welcome to Women in Consulting! This podcast is for you if you a) want to work as an independent consultant or b) you are already working as a consultant. We speak to women from all over the world who work in international development and the social impact space. We dig deep on topics such as why become a consultant in the first place; how to get your first client and key skills that you need no matter what your technical expertise.Sometimes we geek out on what systems and tools you need to make sure you don't get overwhelmed. 09 Raising the money with Wonu Owade

Wonu Owade is a Nigerian national who grew up in the United Kingdom and is now based in the  Netherlands. She is a Fundraising consultant with expertise across the social impact and international development sector . She works across the board with a variety of organisations and trusts, foundations as well as bilateral and multilateral donors. 

In this super useful conversation Wonu shares so generously about her consulting experience. How she was openminded about where her journey would take her, and how her route in was measured and quite gentle.  We learn how she has benefitted from working across different topics and themes,  and how she looks for clients who match her ethos and with whom there is a connection.

Mara is an Argentine and Italian child protection specialist with more than 10 years experience in qualitative research, policy analysis, and program evaluation. She works mainly in Latin America and the Caribbean region. Her research and policy analysis in Latin America, Europe, and Central Asia have produced over 20 publications.  

Mara’s love of  research is clear and in this wide ranging conversation we cover the importance of relationships and supporting those joining the consulting field.  Mara shares her tips for connecting with those who are just ahead of you professionally and we delve into the boundaries around supporting others on their journey.

09 Listening, trust and MEL with Anne Garbutt

Today I am speaking with Anne Garbutt. Anne is an independent senior monitoring and evaluation consultant and an Associate of INTRAC.  She has worked in international Development for 37 years, starting when she volunteered with VSO to lead a Midwifery training programme in Nepal for the W.H.O. 

She has led large multi-country monitoring and evaluation exercises for government donors, but also works with many small civil society organisations.  

She also develops and delivers training, coaching and mentoring in MEL and delivers INTRAC’s popular Advanced Monitoring and Evaluation training course. In this wisdom filled conversation, Anne shares generous insights from her decades of experience of working as a consultant. We talk about trust, listening and how to build relationships with our clients. We learn how this sometimes means we need to hold back our opinion, and how we can steer clients down a route that will ultimately work for them and get them the best result.

Today I am speaking with Juliette Sanchez Lambert. Juliette is a consultant, trainer and facilitator. She works on human rights, gender equality, diversity and inclusion and sexual violence prevention. She works for both public and private actors, mostly NGOs and international organisations.  She is also the co-author of It’s Not That Grey, a practical guide which deconstructs the so-called “grey zone” of sexual harassment by giving concrete tools to identify, bust myths and fight harassment.

In this conversation we find out how and why Juliette started her consulting journey and what propelled her career forwards at the very beginning. But most of this episode is spent geeking out about Linkedin basics and how to use it as a consultant.
