Vegan travel in Japan
Saison 1 · Épisode 21
lundi 2 septembre 2024 • Durée 01:23:19
Welcome to the Veggies Abroad Vegan Travel Podcast, with your host Rebecca Gade Sawicki. In this 21st episode, Rebecca and her travel partner, Matt Gade Sawicki, dive deep into their recent adventure in Japan.
They discuss the challenges and highlights of navigating vegan cuisine in cities like Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka, while also offering tips on traveling during Japan's notoriously hot summer.
Whether you're curious about Japanese culture, vegan food, or travel logistics, this episode provides a comprehensive and entertaining guide.
Key Takeaways
- Navigating Vegan Options: Japan offers a surprising array of vegan options, especially in major cities, but it’s essential to plan ahead and use tools like Google Translate for ingredient checks.
-
- Travel Timing: Summer is the worst time to visit Japan due to extreme heat and humidity. Consider visiting in the spring or fall instead.
-
- Cultural Etiquette: Japan is a very polite and mindful society, with specific cultural norms like quiet public spaces and a lack of public trash cans.
-
- Public Transit: The train system is highly efficient but requires attention to detail, especially regarding luggage restrictions and the difference between local and rapid trains.
- Hidden Gems: Despite Japan’s reputation for traditional cuisine, you can find vegan versions of most local dishes, such as ramen, takoyaki, and okonomiyaki, by seeking out specialized restaurants.

The OG of Vegan Travel, HappyCow
Saison 1 · Épisode 7
lundi 19 février 2024 • Durée 01:07:24
In this episode Rebecca chats with Bartek Filipowicz, Head of HappyCow.
In Bartek's own words "I became vegetarian (soon after vegan) in 2016 after a heart opening conversation with my dear friend. Soon after I met HappyCow for the first time - It welcomed me from a sticker in a vegan (เจ) soup shop in Bangkok, Thailand. We have been friends ever since, and I often wondered how it can be improved. I joined HappyCow in September 2022 as Product and Commercial Lead. Having built multiple successful products for Base CRM and Zendesk, and led engineering and product teams, I was happy to finally use this experience for good. I have been officially leading HappyCow since August 2023. I am a software engineer by education, but my true calling is making products that genuinely help people. I am a happy father and husband, a digital nomad, and a burner."
