Our relationship with food & body with Rachael Wilson

vendredi 6 septembre 2024Durée 57:51

In this episode of Untidy, Hannah and Matilda chat to Rachael Wilson, a UK-trained registered dietitian and feeding therapist specialising in family feeding, feeding disorders, disordered eating and body image. Rachael’s professional training and background also includes mindfulness and mindful eating, intuitive eating, and she is a highly-trained feeding therapist with the Ellyn Satter Institute. They discuss how to nurture a positive relationship with food and body for our children, as well as learning about healing from our own challenges.

(Trigger warning: This episode covers topics such as disordered eating, body dysmorphia and child feeding conditions.)

They dive deep into the complexities of picky eating, exploring the psychology behind it and offering practical advice for parents struggling with mealtime battles. Rachael explains how to create a relaxed mealtime environment, the importance of offering familiar foods, and why we need to give our children autonomy over their eating.

The conversation also covers the challenges of fostering a positive relationship with food and body image in a world obsessed with diet culture. Rachael emphasises the importance of mindful eating, understanding that food is more than just fuel, and how parents can model positive eating behaviors and attitudes towards their body for their children even when they’ve grown up with unhelpful conditioning, eating and body image issues themselves.

Rachael introduces the concept of feeding disorders like ARFID (Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder) and provides insights into the rise of eating disorders among children and adolescents. She offers advice on how parents can spot the early signs of disordered eating and the importance of seeking help early.

This episode is packed with valuable tips and honest discussions that resonate with anyone concerned about their child’s, or their own, relationship with food and body image.

Find Rachael Wilson online thefoodtree.co for more information, workshops, seminars, and to book a consultation. Follow Rachael on Instagram @thefoodtree.co.

“Why do I smell like an uncooked sausage?”

vendredi 30 août 2024Durée 49:56

In this episode of Untidy, after Hannah’s haunted by a lingering leek, Matty and Hannah kick off pondering some awkward culinary curiosities and an exploration of Matty’s food quirks. With recent kitchen renovations, Matty’s shocked to discover she’s not the dynamic person she thought once thought.

After being confronted by her new-found stagnancy, Matty is also adjusting to the reality that her son, Milo, is growing up as he gets ready to start school. The girls talk about handling school transitions and give a hearty plug to Hannah’s ‘My Big Moment’s’ book, ‘Ready for School’ which is helping Matty and Milo prepare for this next milestone.

After that wholesome segment on actual parenting issues, they find another shaky segue onto memories of minor misdemeanours and first crimes from their childhood which they largely, but, not completely, regret.

No more sloppy lasagne

vendredi 5 juillet 2024Durée 49:45

In this episode of Untidy, Matty and Hannah get to sit down in person with Untidy’s behind-the-scenes cat wrangler extraordinaire, Flicka Williams. The girls catch up on how to transition your kids when moving countries without sustaining lasting facial injuries, then loop back to a topic that really lit up the listeners: solving the perfectly layered lasagne. With advice from listeners and a live call to a country mum for the last word on country cooking, they all feel inspired to embark on a ‘lasagne mini-break’ and give it a crack.

Hannah reminisces about producing a turducken (a bird in a bird in a bird in a bird) one Christmas, reveals unmissable pumpkin hacks, then lowers the tone with her next ‘doin’ it for the pod’ modern dating mission.

Preventing social media harm with Michael (Wippa) Wipfli

mercredi 3 juillet 2024Durée 43:36

In this episode of Untidy, Hannah and Matilda are joined by Michael (Wippa) Wipfli, the much-loved Australian radio presenter and co-host of the Fitzy, Wippa & Kate Ritchie breakfast show on Nova 96.9 Sydney. Wippa is the co-founder of 36 Months, a petition to raise the threshold for kids to legally join social media from 13 to 16 years of age in Australia.

Statistics show we are raising ‘the anxious generation’ with young people facing a ‘mental health epidemic’ attributed to the rise in social media usage. Wippa is determined to petition the Australian government to change policy and protect children from social media harm. He maintains that kids need that 36 months between 13 and 16 for crucial brain development to develop a greater sense of self and secure identity before being exposed to the ‘likes’, rankings, and addictive features social media use presents.

Wippa discussed conversations with Australian Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, and the leader of the opposition, Peter Dutton, who are verbally supportive of policy change. Matilda and Hannah asked what they could do to support the movement in New Zealand, and the great race to parliament began with a direct message to Prime Minister, Christopher Luxon, to make policy changes to give the young people of Aotearoa better mental health outcomes.

Find Wippa’s 36 Months petition here and follow on Instagram  @36months.com.au and @wippa1.

Our Matariki and Māori language with Stacey Morrison

mercredi 26 juin 2024Durée 01:02:37

In this episode of Untidy, Hannah and Matty have a kōrero with Stacey Morrison (Te Arawa, Ngāi Tahu). A mainstay of broadcasting in Aotearoa New Zealand for three decades, Stacey is also the co-author and author of books to help people on their journey with te reo Māori. As a champion of Māori language, culture and wisdom unique to Aotearoa, Stacey extends the invitation it offers us all to feel stronger about our connection to whenua, to this land.

Stacey did not grow up speaking te reo and had to confront trauma associated with being separated from her native language on her journey to becoming a fluent speaker, translator and teacher. She and her husband, Scotty, have now given the gift of this birthright back to their children by committing to te reo Māori as the first language spoken in their home.

Stacey, Matty and Hannah talk about the unifying opportunities Māori language and wisdom offers the collective culture of Aotearoa and discuss resistance, awkwardness, uncertainty and also enthusiasm associated with this cultural shift through the generations of New Zealanders.

Stacey gives education on Matariki – Māori New Year, and shares how all people can find connection, meaning and celebration by embracing this time.

Follow Stacey on Instagram at @stacedotcom and find her and Scotty’s books in all good book stores.

Feral fever, lasagne crimes, and the funny 1%

vendredi 7 juin 2024Durée 57:14

In this episode of Untidy, Matty peels off her snot-encrusted bathrobe after a week of fever and slips into her hooded ‘pump cover’ instead. She and Hannah embrace the age and stage of life where conversations start with a health round-up and Hannah embarks on a body-wide WOF (if she can remember what she’s doing).

The girls answer hard-hitting listener questions and expose the culprit in lasagne crimes, as well as revealing Hannah’s dating pool is in fact, The Bog of Eternal Stench where she shares her struggles to find her sunny pontoon.

vendredi 31 mai 2024Durée 46:11

In this episode of Untidy, Hannah and Matty surf a wave of chaotic energy right into a live redemption story that began with Hannah’s brutal ghosting. Intro to step-parenting and IVF with Rebecca Hyde

vendredi 24 mai 2024Durée 52:30

In this episode of Untidy, Hannah and Matty talk to Rebecca Hyde to ‘call a spade, a spade’ about the realities of stepping into the role as a step-parent and undertaking an IVF journey to conceive two children as a “geriatric” mother.

After finding a lack of genuine advice as she embarked on these two journeys towards parenthood, Rebecca wanted to lift the lid on conversations that needed to be had by someone who had spent time on these paths. It’s pragmatic, honest, informative – and as always, gloriously Untidy.

A frigate of fish fillets upon you

vendredi 17 mai 2024Durée 42:29

In this episode of Untidy, Hannah and Matty kick things off with a light rant about the overly emotionally charged occasion that is Mother's Day and share their individual "lulls" (to exercise a euphemism to the core). They wonder if we should all just focus on Easter and we discover that NZ's prime minister is finally seeking wise counsel.

The update we've all been waiting for of Matty's call to Dr Ben Dentist London is delivered and the clock is ticking on a frigate of fish fillets to be deployed by our woman on the ground in England.
