140. Jack Bazalgette - A Cheltenham Festival Special!

vendredi 11 juillet 2025Durée 42:50

In this bonus episode of TIAB we speak to the new artistic director of Cheltenham Music Festival, Jack Bazalgette.

Jack is an inspired choice for Cheltenham - as cofounder and director of Through The Noise he has programmed more than 130 concerts with innovative ensembles and repertoire in an eclectic mix of venues. He brings this visionary approach to the festival whilst still appealing to it’s loyal audience.

We chatted to Jack about Cheltenham festival highlights, balancing the new with what has already been established and potential future plans. He tells us about some of the less conventional venues and performances he’s helped bring together over the years - nowhere is too much of a challenge to stage a concert if you put your mind to it!

Jack is an inspirational person and his can-do attitude will make for exciting seasons ahead at the Cheltenham Festival.

Thanks to Dan Hartland for setting up this thoroughly enjoyable chat!

139. Baroness Thangam Debbonaire and the underrated value of joy

mercredi 9 juillet 2025Durée 01:26:20

This week, Seb and Verity welcome the brilliant and utterly charming Baroness Thangam Debbonaire - cellist, former MP, and now fully-fledged member of the House of Lords.

With such a huge understanding and love of the arts - Thangam was shadow secretary for culture, media and sport, this was a throughly enjoyable and insightful chat including;

  • Swapping Parliament for the Lords
  • Thangam’s memories of music school in the 1980’s - both the brilliant education and a much darker underside
  • How the arts can keep pace with AI and harness the positive elements
  • The importance of music as a way of processing grief
  • Crafting the perfect running playlist - this is next level curation!
  • How arts organisations can make a real noise in politic

Thangam brings a rare and beautiful mix of musical soul and political nous to this episode and we loved having her. She is an incredibly positive person with a clear vision on ways to support and maintain/grow the arts - what a huge asset she is to the House of Lords!

133. Stephanie Cummins - Transatlantic ‘cello relations

lundi 28 avril 2025Durée 45:28

In this week’s episode we chat to cellist Stephanie Cummins.

Having spent many years working as a freelance cellist in New York Stephanie relocated to London and has since been working in the West End on shows including Aspects of Love and Hello Dolly as well as various solo and chamber projects.

We spent a lovely morning with Stephanie discussing growing up in a musical family, highs and lows in her cello studies and how things don’t always work out the way we expect them to.

Stephanie talks about working on Broadway and the similarities/contrasts with the West End. We discuss audiences in 2025, shows that have been particularly special to her and what drew her back to theatre after swearing off it!

We also chat about exciting future projects and falling back in love with music.

57a. Jon Natchez

This week Seb and Verity hit zoom again to chat to composer, arranger, songwriter, improviser, Multi-instrumentalist and coolest guy around, Jon Natchez.

Based In L.A, Jon is a member of The War On Drugs and has worked with artists including David Byrne, St. Vincent, The National, Father John Misty and Liza Minnelli. He is an award winning film composer, his most recent scores are for the Maltese film Luzzu and No Future which will premiere at Tribeca Film festival this year.

56. Ben Marshall

mardi 15 juin 2021Durée 01:19:35

We join Seb and Verity in the Greenwich garden of this week’s guest - Oboist, Cor Anglais player and lockdown hero, Ben Marshall. Ben was the mastermind behind the Greenwich Park pop-up symphonies. He took the difficult decision not to monetise and commercialise these impromptu performances thus retaining their unexpected and magical feeling.

Ben discusses an exciting film project he’s recently worked on whilst giving away as little as possible - he’d signed an NDA leading to many a cryptic answer!

They talk about differing styles of oboe playing around Europe, music education, what the 21st century musician looks like and the unenviable task of sounding the ‘A’ pre gig.

We also find out which famous wizard rocked up to the park pop-ups and what led to him getting a monkfish tattoo.

You’ll be relieved to hear there is more vintage Neighbours chat - thanks Verity - and Ben explains why he’s convinced he started the pandemic....

54. Hannah Quinn & Oli Hayhurst

lundi 31 mai 2021Durée 01:22:39

Road Trip! For episode 54, Seb and Verity hit the road and head to Leighton Buzzard to chat to music power couple, Hannah Quinn and Oli Hayhurst. Hannah is a conductor, pianist, accompanist and répétiteur and Oli is a hugely in demand jazz bassist.....also dabbling in classical, commercial and world music.

How do you manage to tangibly string together all the threads of Hannah and Oli’s exciting an eclectic careers you may ask? Well, judge for yourselves whether with the addition of some clunky segues we’ve achieved this!

Conversation ranges from Hannah’s experiences of being head of music staff and assistant conductor at ETO, to Oli touring with Collabro and residencies at Ronnie Scott’s and Blue Note in Milan. Oli also chats about working with Julian Siegel, Pharoah Sanders and Ray Gelato. Plus supporting Bob Dylan, the different Jazz scenes in London and seeking authenticity in your work.

Hannah talks about her mentors, some hardcore early conducting lessons, complicated translations and rehearsing orchestras in Chinese. She also chats about working with the dancers at the Royal Opera House and the complexities of playing for class.

Inexplicably, topics also include Tiki Bars In Leighton Buzzard, Morris Dancing and performing dogs. Pretty much the kind of hard hitting journalism you’ve come to expect from a TIAB outing!

53. Bim

lundi 24 mai 2021Durée 01:23:57

This week Seb and Verity are joined by vocal powerhouse, Bim. If you’ve listened to chart music over the last five years you will have undoubtably heard Bim’s voice - she’s sung backing vocals for artists including Jessie Ware, Dua Lipa, Mabel and Bastille - she’s featured vocalist on their track Joy - as well as being one of the vocalists for drum and bass act High Contrast.

Bim chats about her journey into singing, musical influences, Glastonbury memories, vocal steaming and speed learning songs plus complex choreography......ooof!

They discuss Bim’s royal connections - as co-coordinator of The Kingdom Choir for Harry and Meghan’s wedding and singing for musical royalty, Sir Elton of John on the new Lion King film soundtrack. Think Rhinestone tracksuits and military precision (you can decide who goes with which).

This conversation includes background sound effects courtesy of Champagne Garden’s constructions - Verity’s nemesis - and Seb destroying a garden chair. Slick as ever.

51. Huw Evans

lundi 10 mai 2021Durée 01:25:34

This week’s episode comes to you from a sunny garden in East London and features Musical Director and all round top bloke, Huw Evans.

Huw is currently Associate MD on hit West End Show Come From Away. He chats to Seb and Verity about this production’s beginnings in Dublin, his onstage interactions (accordion in hand) and why he thinks it’s been so popular with audiences in the UK, US and Canada.

They discuss what the role of Associate MD entails and how he keeps cool and calm on first shows. Huw also chats about his time in Basel on the Lion King ‘Zebra Tour’, taking part in Crap Tap class at Mountview, working with male voice choirs and his mum’s appearance on Opportunity Knocks.....a wonderful 80’s throwback moment.

Huw talks about recently completing a level 2 counselling course and they discuss mental health issues within the music industry - an area that would benefit from more widespread support and recognition.

Towards the end of the podcast there is a brief moment of panic when there is concern Seb has ingested poppy seeds and might go into anaphylactic shock.....it all ends well and no epipen was required.
