Oh blimey.

In this episode, brothers Steve and Giles tumble recklessly into a retro-void.

They roll around with joyful abandon in a garden of lo-fi delights... and gorge themselves silly on the ripe fruits of nostalgia and creativity.

Including a candidate for "The Eternal Halls Of The Four Track Gods" and a brand new "Childhood Themed" recording.

It's really fantastic. You know it is, it really is.

Featuring:

  • "Howay man, it's Lou Reed!"
  • Tommytwentytoes gets paid in full
  • DJ Steve’s advert disco
  • More revisionist history and problematic lyrics

King Of Caravans 03 Oct 202400:49:12

Leisure, relaxation, mindfulness. All are part of the This Are Johnny Domino lifestyle brand and available for you to experience as you listen to this episode.

In it, brothers Steve and Giles share musical musings on a rainy Sunday morning.

As well as dusting off some of their own early bedroom recordings and other crazy nonsense there's a new song from Simon G Richardson.

Including:

  • Lyrical challenge!
  • Bin Bongos!
  • Batman!
  • Leisure Vehicles!
  • Dance music!

Giles’ Lyrics:

I was at Wollaton Park
On a Saturday
I was surrounded by meatheads of all kinds.
Very few people
Were dancing to the
90s house music at 4.30.
The sort of people that I tolerated
But didn’t get on with
Were abound.
I still felt the same way
About them at five decades as at two.

So I had to do something to relax

I went to the toilet

And as I circulated back
Via a small marquee
Full of despicable people.
I was ambushed by
Two short middle-aged women
Who I vaguely recognised
But could not place.

So I had to do something to relax

They recognised me
And were pleased to see me
After a finitude of seconds
I recognised them as neighbours.
We talked of children
And life on our street
And they guessed my job
After one or two guesses.
It was a friendly exchange
With a tinge of sexual tension
I bid them goodbye
And danced away.

But then I met them later
And it went less well.

All Them Trimmings - Part 223 May 202400:59:13

Who would have thought it possible?

That a random set of lyrics, found by a pair of young music nerds in a “how to be a rock star” book would eventually spark a middle-aged creative renaissance.

And that this in turn would lead to the establishment of a post-apocalyptic cult that would ultimately save the world?

Some of the above is true.

In this episode, Giles and Steve listen to more versions of the song we’re calling ”All Them Trimmings” and have a jolly good time doing it.

Featuring their own interpretation, alongside valid contributions from MJ Hibbett and Frankie Machine.

It’s not too late to record your own version!

Spittoon Revival09 May 202400:46:16

Steve and Giles dig into more dusty old recordings and rediscover their version of the American Dream. Has any of that youthfully romantic vision of the good ol' US of A survived into their cynical middle age? We'll have to see.

Including:

  • The meaning of the words “Yeehaa Mi Duck!”
  • Meet Grin, the myopic Native-American face painter
  • Introducing Billy, Biff and Scooter
  • How Steve discovered new vistas

All Them Trimmings - Part 125 Apr 202400:52:13

Back in the olden days, brothers Giles and Steve took inspiration and knowledge from a sacred text. That text was the (now out of print) book “Rock Talk” by Julian Colbeck. Within its hallowed pages were the lyrics to a song with no title, a song they could only imagine.

Until now.

In this episode the Domino boys listen to a selection of newly recorded versions of that very song! Will they they push it too far? Or throw it all away?

Or could they discover new levels of poignancy and truth in the lyrics, with the help of their talented friends?

[Verse]

Searching for time that just is not there.

Does it always have to take this long?

You said don’t push it too far, just let it fade away.

But I felt I had to do something before we threw it all away.

[Chorus]

Just a dash of creativity that's all it needed.

Creativity

with all of them trimmings that come with love.

[Verse]

So take heed,

before you jump that gun

settle your conscience.

Can't you see what I see?

Girl, are you blind

to the ways of the lovin' man?

You need. . .

[Repeat Chorus]

The brothers Domino provide you with more entertaining whiffle about creativity and the joys of making stuff up. This episode includes:

  • Exciting news about Volume 1 of The Best of TAJD!
  • Skinny white boys and the prehistory of creativity
  • A dramatic reenactment of a key moment from the history of the band

Cover Versions Special! 07 Mar 202401:01:54

It’s a Cover Versions Special!

Good lord, what is happening? Can you believe your eyes? It’s quite literally a special episode where we talk about cover versions! This is madness!

But not the band Madness.

Why do we do cover versions? Are they ever better than the original? What band did the best cover versions? What would be a wise song to cover now? All of these questions and more may be ignored as we listen to a bunch of cover versions that we recorded. Songs originally made famous by artists including Neil Diamond, The Ramones and Bryan Adams.

This episode also contains what we call an Engagement Opportunity. Which you could ignore if you like, but quite honestly it’ll make you a more interesting person if you take part.

Related video material is available on the This Are Johnny Domino blog

Your listening experience will be enhanced by hearing, in full, the original versions of the songs featured in the show, which you can find in your favourite record shop or online platform.

The Out To Lunch song lyrics are:

Searching for time that just is not there.
Does it always have to take this long?
You said don’t push it too far, just let it fade away.
But I felt I had to do something before we threw it all away.

Chorus

Just a dash of creativity that's all it needed.

settle your conscience.

Everybody Wants To Live Together Now22 Feb 202400:52:58

It’s a Space and Sci-Fi special!

Brothers Steve and Giles embark on a journey to the furthest reaches of their musical galaxy and discuss three songs from the Johnny Domino back catalogue with a vaguely Spacey theme, just for a bit of fun.

Unfortunately, Giles is most definitely wearing his "grumpy pants", which as you will hear threatens to endanger the entire mission. Will brotherly banter and music save the day? You'll have to listen and find out!

Conflicts which may or may not be resolved in this episode include:

  • Plan 9 v Magnolia
  • Celestial v Abrasive
  • Ghastly v Eclectic
  • Oasis v Wham
  • Wilma vs Ardala

In this jam-packed episode, there's a new submission to The Eternal Halls of The Four Track Gods, which prompts unexpected images and reminiscences for brothers Giles and Steve. As well as this, the voice of Jim makes a welcome return!

And of course, there's more discussion of obscure musical directions than you can shake a stick at.

Come one and all and worship at our church of Lo-Fi!

A Disc-Horse On Contemporary Society25 Jan 202400:57:27

More musical memories of the 1990s record-o-sphere. Brothers Giles and Steve plough into the tape mountain once again and pull out three choice recordings from their past. This week the songs prompt a rambling conversation on a range of themes, including:

  • Intense young men
  • Digging The B-52s
  • A flame-haired barbarian
  • The robot invasion of a West Midlands market town
  • Dissociation through video game addiction
  • Learning about being in a band with the BBC

The Tape: Volume 111 Jan 202400:48:44

In this very special episode of the podcast Steve and Giles take a look back on the tracks chosen in the past 17 episodes to create a purely theoretical (for the moment) "Best of…" compilation tape!

Hear the JD creative process in action as they formulate the ultimate track sequence and consider some alternative takes. There's laughter and tears along the way as the brothers discuss musical near-misses and regrettable artistic choices as well as the odd thing that went quite well.

Warning: this episode may contain hubris.

Let's just make one thing clear, this is NOT a Christmas episode of the "This Are Johnny Domino" podcast! Even so, the boys do seem a little giddy with the joys of the season at times… and it does feature a Christmas song.

The episode also includes:

  • Jesus on a yacht
  • Steve’s school-day memories
  • A very messy ending

Not You, Someone Who's Like You07 Dec 202300:50:46

Dreams appear to be a bit of a recurring theme in this episode, as Giles and Stephen dredge up another selection of recordings from the unconscious realms of their youth. There are anecdotes galore as they…

  • Rediscover the "right-wing McCarthy bongo" song
  • Recollect their "proto-Riot Grrrl" phase
  • Relive an unfortunate Stereolab support slot
  • Completely fail to make a decision

Let us know which one of these songs (if any) should go on the purely theoretical mixtape - leave a comment on the blog, Instagram or Facebook.

Her Golden Hair Was Timotei23 Nov 202300:46:02

The brothers Woodward take more time out to craft another slice of Lo-Fi glory. Firstly there's a new candidate for The Eternal Hall of the Four Track Gods. Will it have what it takes to achieve immortality (and win a t-shirt)?

Then Steve and Giles put together a "head to head" of quirky nonsense from their back catalogue. To be honest, both selections contain "questionable" lyrical sentiments, but will their musical charms be enough to earn them a spot on the "Best of…" compilation tape? We’ll have to see…

Key features of this episode include:

  • Pugwall riot
  • "Sampling"
  • Toxic lyrics.
  • A Flute preset

Love Does Not Compute09 Nov 202300:55:55

Hello,

I’m a podcast episode and I’m here to tell you that I am as entertaining as the preceding episodes of This Are Johnny Domino - if not more so!

In all honesty, I feel that I have the punchy dynamism and vitality that makes me stand out from the rest of the pack… Giles and Stephen certainly had a great time filling me with the usual good-humoured banter and rambling conversation about music that you’ve never heard.

Will you agree with them about which song should make it onto the "Best of…" compilation?

Other features you’re sure to enjoy about me are:

  • Lonesome mods and sex robots
  • Big Jim speaks and Elston tweaks
  • 80s teens and motorway dreams

Kind Regards,

Episode 14

I'm Not 'In' Anymore 31 Aug 202300:46:38

They say that time is a great healer, but sometimes discovering evidence of past attitudes and opinions in recordings made 30 years ago can be painful!

Listen as Giles and Steve 'figure it out' and come up with further revisionist histories of their lo-fi recording career. This week the brothers rediscover songs ranging from acoustic 'punk' to straight-up indie pop - but which song will make it onto the purely theoretical 'best of' compilation tape?

Bring A Friend 17 Aug 202300:40:03

It’s the 30-year anniversary of our adoption of the name Johnny Domino, so to mark the occasion Steve heads to Ilkeston to record his part of this episode in the very room where it all started all those years ago.

Just to completely dispel any possible sense of jeopardy over the song choice for the "Best of" mix tape, the first track today sets out our Lo-Fi agenda right from the get-go. The second painfully destroys any possible conception that this podcast is ‘self-congratulatory’. The third track gets on the mix tape.

Also including:

  • A miniature man playing a tiny guitar at high speed
  • The sound of Steve developing a stomach ulcer whilst listening to a song
  • The most ridiculous chorus ever
  • Us blasting off into the Galaxie (500)

You Call It Art...03 Aug 202300:44:40

Did we actually record this episode? Or was it perhaps made by an AI? You’ll have to give it a listen and see what you think.

If you do, you’ll find us in our usual mode, listening to our old tunes and rambling on about Lo-Fi influences, 70s Kung Fu, and Rave culture. The tracks are varied, but will any of them have what it takes to make it onto the ‘Best of Johnny Domino’ mixtape?

Also including:

  • Twats Garden revival denied shocker.
  • Sonic Youth - questionable slacker role models?
  • Drunken fighting and hip-hop folk.
  • Woody Guthrie’s trip to the 24-hour garage.

Also - EXCITING NEWS! Our first newly recorded track in almost 20 years is featured on the Artists Against Success compilation ‘All Goals Achieved’ which is released on 31st July!

You can download it via Bandcamp and it’s on streaming platforms (Spotify, Apple, etc) too. The Tape: Volume 229 Aug 202400:48:51

When we started this podcast, we thought we could spend time discussing old four-track recordings and maybe come up with a "purely theoretical" compilation tape of our favourite tunes. Ignoring the voices in our heads saying it was pointless and impossibly niche, we took our first faltering steps on the journey…

Incredibly, here we are with the second volume of our mix tape including tracks selected over the last fourteen episodes. We discuss the track listing, hear some alternate takes and digress in the usual fashion. As is customary, it's pointless and impossibly niche.

This episode includes, amongst other things:

  • Cannibals
  • Improvisation
  • Bongos
  • Sweat

When Good Neighbours Become Good Friends20 Jul 202300:45:19

This week the brothers Woodward find a more upbeat and ‘danceable’ selection of tunes from their mountain of old four-track recordings. The question is, will the good vibes evaporate when Steve calls Giles’ keyboard part 'moronic'?

Also including:

  • Johnny Miller’s bass technique
  • More predictions of the future
  • Excessive drum talk
  • Four-track maximalism
  • Blessington Carriage field recording
  • An open invitation to Jonathan Richman

This Are Johnny Domino23 May 202300:01:13

If you hanker for the early 90s and the halcyon days of lo-fi alternative music, recorded on crappy equipment in a home environment, you should listen to This Are Johnny Domino.

Giles and Steve Woodward began recording songs under the name Johnny Domino in the summer of 1993. Over the next 3-4 years they recorded over 100 songs on a 4-track tape recorder, drafting in other players on an ad-hoc basis.

In this new podcast, the now middle-aged men reminisce about songs they recorded up to 30 years ago. Songs that only a small handful of people have heard. In some cases, songs that they can't remember writing or recording!

If you're the kind of person who will watch a documentary about a band or a musician that you are indifferent to, or who enjoys arguing about music as if it's the most important thing in the world (because, deep down, you believe that it is), listen to This Are Johnny Domino.

Wake Up And Smell The Cat Food15 Aug 202400:50:20

The Brothers Woodward have more fun than you'd think is possible while listening to obscure music and rambling on about nonsense.

This jam-packed episode features two contenders for The Best Of This Are Johnny Domino, more interpretations of childhood songs and a new entry into The Eternal Halls Of The Four Track Gods!

Including, amongst other things:

  • Martha's Harbour at Rock City
  • Wet fingers, glass tubes and 1970s daytime TV
  • Animals coming in two by two

London, New York, Paris, Munich01 Aug 202400:56:29

…Everybody talk about pop music - as the song goes. In this episode of the podcast, the Woodward brothers talk about their very own version of pop music, which unfortunately doesn’t seem to be all that popular.

As usual, there are tunes to consider, prompting amusing memories of 1990s lo-fi fun.

This episode features:

  • An Erstwhile Friend takes us back
  • Giles and Steve attempt to tell the world's funniest joke
  • Nick Rhodes keyboards, drum machines and muffins
  • Superheroes and blood harmonies

"I wasn’t sure about the Johnny Domino Podcast, but I gave it a chance, and now I think I love it."

Oh Baby, Give Me One More Chance18 Jul 202400:52:00

It's Second Chance Sunday! Steve and Giles reconsider some previously rejected recordings for the theoretical Best of… compilation tape.

Regular listeners might speculate that this could be a sign that they are running out of material after 30 episodes. We must tell you that this (frighteningly) is not the case.

Featuring:

  • A supersonic bus journey
  • A young man selling his soul on the rotary
  • More AI nonsense
  • Wordless rhythmic backing vocals
  • Another 60-second challenge
  • Frankie Machine sounding desperate

The Johnny Domino Podcast. Give it a chance.

Something Electric Happens04 Jul 202400:54:15

In this episode the brothers Woodward continue to explore the outer reaches of their youthful recordings and past musical endeavours. Here’s a poem about it:

Indie pop muscles are flexed
A mystery song is uncovered
We shake our own hands and step into the wreck
Meditating the nature of brothers.

Steve attempts to erase a song
Nostalgia and posterity
Giles gets the title wrong
Retro podcast ecstasy.

All Them Trimmings - Part 320 Jun 202400:52:16

What does it all mean?

A clunky set of lyrics, found in an out-of-print book.

It didn’t sound that promising as a starting point. But interpretations were made, songs were written, significance found.

But what does it all mean?

Giles and Steve discover more incredible versions of the song they called All Them Trimmings and reach a thrilling conclusion to the whole saga.

Warning: This episode contains discussion of postcards, guitar solos and wine bars.

The Rockin' Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Flu27 Mar 202500:56:24

Giles and Steve scratch their heads and wonder aloud about the future of the podcast. Have they reached the bottom of the barrel? What lies ahead for their self-referential and (hopefully) entertaining musical odyssey?

Luckily for everyone involved, after a short period of reflection, they decide to carry on with business as usual.

Warning: contains health issues talk and potentially offensive material (especially if you were in a Derby band called Scribble during the 1990s).

Also includes:

  • PSAs: a PSA
  • Bleeps
  • Predictable music
  • Unity through chips.
  • Was Enos Boss Hogg’s son?

This episode of This Are Johnny Domino swings in a surrealistic, experimental way as Steve and Giles explore more aspects of their musical past, present and future.

There are atmospheric vibes from the "miserable" album and a rough-hewn demo inspired by a bunch of fleshy muppets. As well as that, Dr Mark Hibbert and family provide their musings on our shared emotional reality and lived experience…

…to the sound of a relentlessly bouncing ball...

Also featuring:

  • Eraserhead hairstyle!

At The Punk Rock Factory31 Oct 202401:03:48

"Punk is not really a style of music. It was more a state of mind" - Mike Watt

Steve and Giles, (two actual brothers) unearth a song from their extremely angsty college band and then marvel at the understated wonder that is Frankie Machine. There's also a fabulous song about loving a body part and a musical joke that seemed to get lost.

If that's not enough for you, we've got…

  • Poetry!
  • Beauty!
  • Enmity!
  • Drollery!
