I Lick You

Épisode 36

jeudi 17 octobre 2024Durée 56:32

Oh blimey.

In this episode, brothers Steve and Giles tumble recklessly into a retro-void.

They roll around with joyful abandon in a garden of lo-fi delights... and gorge themselves silly on the ripe fruits of nostalgia and creativity.

Including a candidate for "The Eternal Halls Of The Four Track Gods" and a brand new "Childhood Themed" recording.

It's really fantastic. You know it is, it really is.

Featuring:

  • "Howay man, it's Lou Reed!"
  • Tommytwentytoes gets paid in full
  • DJ Steve’s advert disco
  • More revisionist history and problematic lyrics

King Of Caravans

Épisode 35

jeudi 3 octobre 2024Durée 49:12

Leisure, relaxation, mindfulness. All are part of the This Are Johnny Domino lifestyle brand and available for you to experience as you listen to this episode.

In it, brothers Steve and Giles share musical musings on a rainy Sunday morning.

As well as dusting off some of their own early bedroom recordings and other crazy nonsense there's a new song from Simon G Richardson.

Including:

  • Lyrical challenge!
  • Bin Bongos!
  • Batman!
  • Leisure Vehicles!
  • Dance music!

Giles’ Lyrics:

I was at Wollaton Park
On a Saturday
I was surrounded by meatheads of all kinds.
Very few people
Were dancing to the
90s house music at 4.30.
The sort of people that I tolerated
But didn’t get on with
Were abound.
I still felt the same way
About them at five decades as at two.

So I had to do something to relax

I went to the toilet

And as I circulated back
Via a small marquee
Full of despicable people.
I was ambushed by
Two short middle-aged women
Who I vaguely recognised
But could not place.

So I had to do something to relax

They recognised me
And were pleased to see me
After a finitude of seconds
I recognised them as neighbours.
We talked of children
And life on our street
And they guessed my job
After one or two guesses.
It was a friendly exchange
With a tinge of sexual tension
I bid them goodbye
And danced away.

But then I met them later
And it went less well.

All Them Trimmings - Part 2

Épisode 26

jeudi 23 mai 2024Durée 59:13

Who would have thought it possible?

That a random set of lyrics, found by a pair of young music nerds in a “how to be a rock star” book would eventually spark a middle-aged creative renaissance.

And that this in turn would lead to the establishment of a post-apocalyptic cult that would ultimately save the world?

Some of the above is true.

In this episode, Giles and Steve listen to more versions of the song we’re calling ”All Them Trimmings” and have a jolly good time doing it.

Featuring their own interpretation, alongside valid contributions from MJ Hibbett and Frankie Machine.

It’s not too late to record your own version!

Spittoon Revival

Épisode 25

jeudi 9 mai 2024Durée 46:16

Steve and Giles dig into more dusty old recordings and rediscover their version of the American Dream. Has any of that youthfully romantic vision of the good ol' US of A survived into their cynical middle age? We'll have to see.

Including:

  • The meaning of the words “Yeehaa Mi Duck!”
  • Meet Grin, the myopic Native-American face painter
  • Introducing Billy, Biff and Scooter
  • How Steve discovered new vistas

All Them Trimmings - Part 1

Épisode 25

jeudi 25 avril 2024Durée 52:13

Back in the olden days, brothers Giles and Steve took inspiration and knowledge from a sacred text. That text was the (now out of print) book “Rock Talk” by Julian Colbeck. Within its hallowed pages were the lyrics to a song with no title, a song they could only imagine.

Until now.

In this episode the Domino boys listen to a selection of newly recorded versions of that very song! Will they they push it too far? Or throw it all away?

Or could they discover new levels of poignancy and truth in the lyrics, with the help of their talented friends?

[Verse]

Searching for time that just is not there.

Does it always have to take this long?

You said don’t push it too far, just let it fade away.

But I felt I had to do something before we threw it all away.

[Chorus]

Just a dash of creativity that's all it needed.

Creativity

with all of them trimmings that come with love.

[Verse]

So take heed,

before you jump that gun

settle your conscience.

Can't you see what I see?

Girl, are you blind

to the ways of the lovin' man?

You need. . .

[Repeat Chorus]

  • Skinny white boys and the prehistory of creativity
  • A dramatic reenactment of a key moment from the history of the band

[Verse]

Searching for time that just is not there.
Does it always have to take this long?
You said don’t push it too far, just let it fade away.

Cover Versions Special!

Épisode 22

jeudi 7 mars 2024Durée 01:01:54

It’s a Cover Versions Special!

Good lord, what is happening? Can you believe your eyes? It’s quite literally a special episode where we talk about cover versions! This is madness!

But not the band Madness.

Why do we do cover versions? Are they ever better than the original? What band did the best cover versions? What would be a wise song to cover now? All of these questions and more may be ignored as we listen to a bunch of cover versions that we recorded. Songs originally made famous by artists including Neil Diamond, The Ramones and Bryan Adams.

This episode also contains what we call an Engagement Opportunity. Which you could ignore if you like, but quite honestly it’ll make you a more interesting person if you take part.

Your listening experience will be enhanced by hearing, in full, the original versions of the songs featured in the show, which you can find in your favourite record shop or online platform.

The Out To Lunch song lyrics are:

Searching for time that just is not there.
Does it always have to take this long?
You said don’t push it too far, just let it fade away.
But I felt I had to do something before we threw it all away.

Chorus

Just a dash of creativity that's all it needed.
Creativity
with all of them trimmings that come with love.

So take heed,
before you jump that gun
settle your conscience.
Can't you see what I see?
Girl, are you blind
to the ways of the lovin' man?
You need. . .

(Repeat Chorus)

Everybody Wants To Live Together Now

Épisode 21

jeudi 22 février 2024Durée 52:58

It’s a Space and Sci-Fi special!

Brothers Steve and Giles embark on a journey to the furthest reaches of their musical galaxy and discuss three songs from the Johnny Domino back catalogue with a vaguely Spacey theme, just for a bit of fun.

Unfortunately, Giles is most definitely wearing his "grumpy pants", which as you will hear threatens to endanger the entire mission. Will brotherly banter and music save the day? You'll have to listen and find out!

Conflicts which may or may not be resolved in this episode include:

  • Plan 9 v Magnolia
  • Celestial v Abrasive
  • Ghastly v Eclectic
  • Oasis v Wham
  • Wilma vs Ardala

More musical memories of the 1990s record-o-sphere. Brothers Giles and Steve plough into the tape mountain once again and pull out three choice recordings from their past. This week the songs prompt a rambling conversation on a range of themes, including:

  • Intense young men
  • Digging The B-52s
  • A flame-haired barbarian
  • The robot invasion of a West Midlands market town
  • Dissociation through video game addiction
