Then Is Now Ep. 137 - 13 Days of Hallowtober 2023 - Cursed (2005)25 Oct 202301:06:29

Day 7: On this episode of Then Is Now's 13 Days of Hallowtober event for 2023, our werewolf discussion continues with “Cursed” from 2005, directed by horror legend Wes Craven and starring Joshua Jackson, Christina Ricci, and Jesse Eisenberg. The film is kind of a mess and we dive into its troubled production, but also pull out the good things about it. Being from 2005, there were a scant few newspaper movie ads for it, so we posted two as well as a scathing review on the web page. Enjoy!

Then Is Now Episode 48 - Rebel Without a Cause27 May 202101:44:00

Rebel Without a Cause (1955), starring the iconic and legendary James Dean, is a classic film that everyone MUST see! Lucas from Denmark returns to the show to help me break down this great piece of cinema. We had fun previously exploring American Graffiti, and once again we get a fresh perspective on James Dean's opus, not only because Lucas is from Denmark, but also because he's 19 and we like to get a young person's perspective on pop culture of the past.

This film not only continues to hold up, but it also resonates with young people in any era as James Dean's character, Jim, and his friend Judy, try to deal with the fact that their parents are just inept at true parenting! This is one of those films that we here at Then Is Now classify as one you SHOULD see!

We advise that you watch the film first, especially with a teenager, and then come back here to listen to our breakdown of the film. We'd like to know if it still is relatable to today's generation!

Then Is Now Episode 45 - Bill Oberst Jr07 May 202100:59:47

Arriving this week on VOD and streaming services is the new Thriller called Painkiller, directed by Mark Savage and written by Tom Parnell and Mark Savage. It is a very timely tale about vigilante justice versus the creators and pushers of opiods.

In the past, we were always guaranteed a movie in any given year starring one of the great horror icons like Vincent Price, Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing, and dozens of actors who were not afraid to say that they were horror actors. Our guest today is Bill Oberst Jr, the main star of Painkiller, and one among few in today's generation of performers that comfortably accepts the mantle of “Horror Actor” and thrives in his job!

While there aren't too many actors these days that would feel comfortable saying that they tend to stick to one genre for the most part, this man embraces the role and it is evident in all of his amazing, and numerous award-winning parts in film and television.

So sit back and listen to my interview with one of the coolest actors in Hollywood!

Then Is Now Episode 44 - 2021 April Ghouls Drive-In Monster Rama01 May 202101:11:15

We've discussed Drive-In Theaters in the past, and while many indoor movie theaters have closed down because of Covid-19, the outdoor Drive-In Theater has not only thrived, but is experiencing a resurgence!

This past weekend my wife and I had the good fortune to be able to attend the 2021 April Ghouls Drive-In Monster Rama at the Riverside Drive-In in Vandergrift, Pennsylvania. It was 80s weekend and they played four horror movies all night on Friday and four more on Saturday. There were vendors and a special guest appearance!

I got some great interviews and you'll hear those in this episode, as well as trailers for the films, and give you a little discussion about them. And there were some other fun things that we got to check out and some things that we didn't have time for, that I'll tell you all about!! This episode also ties in with Then Is Now Blog #51, so check it out!

Then Is Now Episode 43 - Burt Ward17 Apr 202101:54:01

As we've discussed on the show, comic books and superheroes are a part of our pop culture that have never disappeared from our collective zeitgeist. Batman first appeared in 1939 in Detective Comics, and continues to be hugely popular 81 years later.

On January 12th, 1966, the ABC network premiered a TV series that would not only catapult the character of Batman into the mainstream Pop Culture, but also create living legends out of its two stars, Adam West and Burt Ward.

Today, we've got a special guest on our show that is one of those living legends, Burt Ward! He's not going to just discuss the Batman TV series, but also his amazing career and causes that he works for. If you've never seen the Batman show, I highly recommend that you do immediately!! And please, share this show with younger people, especially kids, who will thoroughly enjoy it, as will you!

Then Is Now Episode 42 - Ron Marz08 Apr 202101:42:10

As many listeners already know, we strive on this show to present cool pop culture of the past to a new generation who may have missed out on those things. Comic books have been around for about 90 years, and are still going strong. Most modern audiences are familiar with the Marvel and DC movies that have been popular for the last decade, as well as the various superhero shows on TV and on streaming services. Comic books are one thing that have never left the zeitgeist, and remain a large part of our Pop Culture.

On our show today, we have Comic Book writer extraordinaire, Ron Marz, who has put his indelible stamp on nearly every Marvel and DC character, as well as Witchblade and tons of other independent comics! Podcaster Justin Cooper joins me and we have a fantastic conversation with this prolific writer!

Then Is Now Episode 41 - Bob Eubanks25 Mar 202101:20:34

As we continue to introduce younger listeners to all the cool Pop Culture stuff of the past that they may have missed out on, TV Game Shows are certainly on that list! Game shows from the 60s to the 80s were wildly popular throughout those decades, and viewers of those shows have fond memories of them to this day.

The Price is Right, Match Game, Family Feud, Hollywood Squares, Let's Make a Deal, and the $20,000 Dollar Pyramid are just a few shows that are considered classics today, and still popular in reruns online and on the Game Show channel.

We have a special guest today who was host of several Game Shows including Card Sharks, Dream House, Rhyme and Reason, and Infatuation. Bob Eubanks hosted The Newlywed Game off and on for five decades, on both network and in syndication. The Newlywed Game became one of the top game shows in television history. But our guest is not just a game show host! He's had a long career that delves into many different facets of the entertainment business, and we're hoping to get to as much of his career as we can.

So sit back and listen to a fun interview with a man who is truly a legend in Game Show history!

Then Is Now Episode 40 - The Abominable Dr Phibes with William & Damon Goldstein and Derek M Koch20 Mar 202101:15:18

50 years ago on May 8th, 1971, a movie came out that was not your average horror picture; a blend of horror, humor, and music put together in a way that it seems perfectly natural and yet unlike any movie before it. It's a tale of revenge by a man driven insane because of the death of his wife, and the fantastic and horrific ways in which he exacts his revenge, told in a story that's shrouded somewhat in Dark Comedy. I'm talking of course, about The Abominable Dr. Phibes starring the legendary horror actor, Vincent Price. The movie was so-well received that it garnered a sequel in 1972 called Dr. Phibes Rises Again!

On today's show, we not only have the return of the amazing Derek M. Koch from Monster Kid Radio, as guest co-host, but also the creator of Dr. Phibes, William Goldstein and his son, Damon! William and Damon have written several books, not only novelizing the films but also delving into the past and further exploits of Dr. Phibes!

So go and watch these films, then come back here to listen to our excellent discussion with the Goldsteins and learn about the history and future of a classic Horror Picture!

Then Is Now Episode 39 - Exploit This!14 Mar 202101:43:51

It's always fun when you can find a new series of films, or even a genre, that you didn't know existed. I'm sure some of our listeners have heard or even seen exploitation films, but I'll bet a vast majority of you don't know what one is, or you may not even know that you've already seen one!

Exploitation is a unique and fascinating genre that pretty much goes back to when film cameras were first invented, and while there are still exploitation films being made today, the general consensus is that their heyday spanned from the 1960s to the 1980s.

On today's episode, co-host and filmmaker, Chris Esper and I dive into the Exploitation genre with filmmaker, Eric Eichelberger, who is creating a documentary on such films called Exploit This!

Then Is Now Ep. 136 - 13 Days of Hallowtober 2023 - Wolves (2014)24 Oct 202301:00:36

Day 6: MyKill and Re-Gor tackle the little-known werewolf film “Wolves” (2014) on this episode of Then Is Now's 2023 event, 13 Days of Hallowtober! The movie stars Jason Momoa, Lucas Till, and veteran character actor Stephen McHattie, and is a refreshing direction as it doesn't rely on past films to shape its story. Sadly, because it was 2014, there were no movie ads, just listings, so we posted one that contained the logo, and a press photo from a horrible review. Enjoy!

Then Is Now Episode 38 - Crisis on Infinite Earths05 Mar 202101:45:11

On our Dungeons and Dragons episode, we discussed how Role Playing Games never really disappeared from our Pop Culture, and in fact are thriving. The same can be said for Comic Books. While early comics can be traced back to 18th century Japan, comic books as we now know them first truly became popular in the 1930s. The term comic book comes from the fact that newspaper comic strips (also known as funnies) were compiled into books early on. This later changed as the format was used to display all kinds of stories that were created originally for them and covered various genres, not just comedy.

The 1930s and 40s are considered the Golden Age of comics, while the 1950s and 60s are called the Silver Age of comics. The origin point of the Silver age is generally credited with the introduction of the character, The Flash, in Showcase #4 in October of 1956. At that time, superhero comics were in a decline, and the emergence of the Flash began a renaissance of superhero books that continues to thrive today!

As is evident, specifically with the massive success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (or MCU) today, comic books and their stories continue to be hugely popular in several different mediums. In America, the two largest and most successful comic book publishers are Marvel Comics and DC comics. The average person may not realize the difference between the two, but some of Marvel's most popular characters are The Fantastic Four, Spiderman, Captain America, and the Avengers. DC's most popular characters are usually part of a superhero team called the Justice League which is comprised of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Green Lantern, Green Arrow, and the Flash, just to name a few.

In 1985, DC Comics reached its fiftieth anniversary of publishing comic books. To celebrate this landmark event in comics publishing history, the company put out a twelve-issue miniseries, titled Crisis on Infinite Earths, that promised to cause, "major and permanent changes to occur throughout the entire DC line". This promise proved to be true as Crisis on Infinite Earths brought lasting change to DC Comics from a narrative point of view, and heralded even further-reaching changes for the comic book industry and fan community.

So sit back and enjoy this episode as I and a new guest co-host will delve deep into the Crisis and discuss its impact on the comic book industry!

Then Is Now Episode 37 - Happy Days Crossover27 Feb 202101:36:09

Since the beginning of Then Is Now, I've been talking about pop culture that is disappearing from our collective consciousness. One of my go to lines has always been that people should know who Fonzie is. Arthur Fonzarelli, aka The Fonze, was a HUGE part of our pop culture for several decades, but if you ask a kid today who Fonzie is, they don't know! And that's very sad. Fonzie was a character on the famous sitcom, Happy Days, and remains as one of the coolest characters on TV.

People SHOULD know who Fonzie is, and you don't have to have watched all the episodes of Happy Days, but you should at least be familiar with the show and the character.

On today's show, we have another crossover with another podcast, this one is called These Days are Ours, where the hosts break down each episode of Happy Days on every show!

So, if you fondly remember Happy Days and know what I'm talking about, or if you don't know what I'm talking about, sit back and you'll learn something COOL. Whoa!

Then Is Now Episode 36 - It Follows (2014)19 Feb 202100:59:09

While many Horror movies tend to re-use common tropes and over and over again, there are those rare ones that manage to not only come up with an original idea, but also take those tropes and turn them on their ears. It Follows, a horror movie from 2014, manages to do all that as well as present a multi-layered film that delivers chills and horror with maximum effect. It has been described as not only influenced by John Carpenter's films, but also a kind of mix between the Ring and Nightmare on Elm Street. Jack Gorey and I break it down and tell you what we thought of this modern horror picture. Then Is Now Episode 35 - Valentines 2021 - Casablanca (1942)12 Feb 202100:55:44

Happpy Valentines Day 2021, everyone! In this episode, filmmaker Chris Esper and I dive deep into one of our all-time favorite films: Casablanca from 1942! It's not a sappy romance movie, but an incredible tale of a guy who has been trying to shed his past while the Nazis are creeping in, and a woman from his past who comes back into his life, shattering all the emotional barriers he's built up!

Casablanca is one of those films that just keeps getting better upon each viewing and you always notice something that you didn't notice before in previous viewings! With an amazing cast including Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, Claude Rains, Peter Lorre, Sydney Greenstreet, and Conrad Veidt, Casablanca is a fabulous amalgamation of several things that shouldn't have worked together, but somehow make this movie constantly rank in the top 5 lists of film lovers around the world!

So sit down with your loved one to watch this film for Valentine's Day, and if you listen to this show first, you can impress them with what you have learned!

Then Is Now Episode 34 – American Graffiti (1973)06 Feb 202101:16:11

As regular listeners know, Then Is Now is a show in which we discuss pop culture that is disappearing from our zeitgeist and present it to today's audience – an effort to show people all the cool stuff they may have missed out on. The film, American Graffiti from 1973 directed by George Lucas of Star Wars fame, is an important film in our culture and film history. This is a movie that NEEDS to be seen! The story is a slice of life from 1962, concerning a group of friends just out of High School, and is a coming of age tale as they face their fears and concerns regarding the major life changes ahead of them.

Joining me today is a brand new guest co-host named Lucas, who is not from America, but is very enthusiastic about discussing American pop culture on this show! This was his first viewing of American Graffiti and we had a great conversation, diving deep into the themes and subtext of the film. Then Is Now Episode 33 - D&D Crossover with Lions of Legend29 Jan 202102:39:36

One of the fun things in our pop culture that has not only NOT disappeared from our collective consciousness, but has also experienced a resurgence due to the stay at home orders of 2020 is RPGs, or Role Playing Games.

The famous table top games as we know them today were first created by Gary Gygax in the early 1970s with his still insanely popular Role Playing Game, Dungeons and Dragons! The amount of games are too numerous to list, but some of the ones we discuss are Traveler, Werewolf the Apocalypse and Call of Cthulhu, just to name a few.

This episode is Then Is Now Podcast's first crossover with another show called Lions of Legend, in which Matt Powell and Daniel Crowther (along with some friends) actually play D&D on the show, introducing a whole new generation to the joys of RPGs! Joining us also is frequent guest co-host, Spency Domepiece and the four of us have a hilarious and fun conversation discussing Role Playing Games in depth!

Then Is Now Episode 32 - Alien 197922 Jan 202101:03:06

Last time Jack Gorey was on the show, we covered the modern Christmas Classic, Rare Exports. This episode was recorded before we did Rare Exports, but we wanted to put out a Christmas themed episode first.

In today's show, we cover the classic Sci-Fi/Horror film, Alien from 1979! A space merchant vessel receives an unknown distress call and upon investigation, find that they inadvertently brought an alien life form aboard their ship that stalks them one by one.

This picture is what we consider required viewing, so if you haven't seen Alien, you NEED to see it! Then come back and listen to our breakdown of the film!

Then Is Now Episode 30 - Horror Primer 2 - The Mummy Movies07 Jan 202101:25:36

Part 2 of our series on How to Get a Younger Person into Horror is here, to start 2021 off right!

Filmmaker Chris Esper joins me as we continue our journey to help you, the listener, get someone to enjoy Horror movies! If you start them young enough, we have recommended starting with the Universal Horror Classics: Dracula, Frankenstein, The Wolfman, The Mummy, The Invisible Man, and the Creature From the Black Lagoon. On our first part, in Episode 26, Chris and I discussed Dracula and it's sequels.

This episode we continue that tradition with The Mummy (1932) and its sequels The Mummy's Hand (1940), The Mummy's Tomb (1942), The Mummy's Ghost (1944) and The Mummy's Curse (1944). We had some great laughs, particularly as the movies decreased in quality, but they're all still fun, nonetheless!!

Remember to prime them if they are not used to Black & White movies by starting them with The Little Rascals, The Three Stooges, or even The Twilight Zone! They will truly come to appreciate that not all movies or TV shows have to be in color!

Chris Esper's website is: storiesmotion.com, and he's also available on Facebook!

Then Is Now Episode 28 - Rare Exports (2010)23 Dec 202000:54:41

Merry Christmas, everyone!

As 2020 draws to a close (finally!), Christmas is now upon us! And while we at Then Is Now could simply discuss a Christmas movie, we decided that we needed a little something more. So if you like your holidays to have a darker edge, then you need look no further that the Finnish film, Rare Exports from 2010!

My guest co-host, newcomer Jack Gorey, and I discuss this little known film that has gained a cult following over the years. A company drilling in a mountain in Finland unearths something that may have to do with the origins of Santa Claus, and it's up to a young boy named Pietari to save everyone from ending up on the naughty list!

This picture definitely falls into the category of something you SHOULD know about. But be warned, while this film involves Santa Claus, it is definitely NOT for kids!! So grab your eggnog or hot cocoa, sit back, and listen as Jack and Re-Gor discuss the film. Then Is Now Episode 27 - Fright Night on Channel 9 with James Arena17 Dec 202001:17:15

As of this writing, a winter storm is hitting us like crazy. It's time to shut the lights off and snuggle up on the couch to watch a scary movie, perhaps even a late night scary film! For those who grew up in New York in the 1970s and 80s, you had a plethora of horror film programming, but one that stands out among the rest and is beloved and remembered to this day was Fright Night on Channel 9, WOR-TV! In those days, there were no movie channels, so it was up to the big 3 networks and local independent stations to air movies for the audience to enjoy. And there were no DVRs or Streaming services, so if you missed it...you missed it!

Fright Night even reached my house in a suburb of Boston, in the 1980s when our cable system carried the New York channels WOR and WPIX, and I fondly remember staying up late to watch it! Well now the joy can be spread through the amazing book Fright Night on Channel 9, written by the talented James Arena!

James joins us on this episode and we delve into the history of Fright Night on WOR, how these types of shows were created, why they were so fun and beloved, and we even share our own personal memories of growing up and watching late night (or weekend daytime) horror shows! James is also author of of a 6-book series spotlighting dance music artists, and we discuss those books as well.

So sit back, snuggle up, and listen to a fabulous interview!!

James and his books can be found on Amazon, and anywhere you can get books online.

For international customers, go to bookdepository.com and receive free shipping anywhere in the world!

Then Is Now Episode 26 - Universal Horror Primer11 Dec 202002:14:02

Greetings!

Then Is Now is the show about not only introducing young people to all the cool stuff they missed out on, but also educating people about stuff they SHOULD know. Horror movies are no exception.

But if you are a life long fan of horror, and you want to introduce someone else or even a young person to the joys of horror movies, where does one begin? It's harder with younger people because so many horror movies are simply not appropriate for children.

Well, we at Then Is Now have created this special sub-series of shows in which Re-Gor and filmmaker Chris Esper discuss this very matter, starting you off at the beginning with the classic Universal Horror movies!

Instead of simply going through Universal's film library in release order, we are presenting them in series order; that is, we are taking a major monster movie and discussing that as well as all of its sequels. In this episode, part 1 of this new sub-series, Re-Gor and Chris start with Dracula from 1931 and all of its sequels: Dracula's Daughter (1936), Son of Dracula (1943), and House of Dracula (1945).

You may have to explain to the person you are teaching that not all movies are in color. If they are very young, try getting them used to watching things like The Three Stooges and The Little Rascals, among other things. As they will undoubtedly be entertained by those film short series, after a while they won't question why there is no color in a particular film or TV series. As you start down the journey with us, you will be able to explain to your protege how black and white helps create mood and atmosphere, particularly in a scary film!

So start checking these films out, beginning with the Dracula series, and come back and join us for a fun episode!

As always, please leave us a great review at iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify, or wherever you download your podcasts, so others can find the show!

Visit our website havenpodcasts.com for other fun stuff including our sister show, The East Meets the West, in which we discuss Shaw Brothers movies and Spaghetti Westerns!

Then Is Now Episode 25 - Dr. Scream's Spookshow Revival with Keith Stickley03 Dec 202001:23:56

Episode 25 is upon us and have we got a fun one for you!

As discussed in a previous episode, Spook Shows are an almost forgotten form of entertainment where people would go to a movie theater after the films for the day were shown (usually at midnight). A magician would perform amazing magic tricks as well as a seance; monsters would come out of the movie screen and kidnap girls in the audience; a blackout would occur in which ghosts and other apparitions would fly all around the theater and much, much more!

Spook Shows were wildly popular from the 1930s until the mid-70s, and many thought they were gone and forgotten. Well, they're not! Joining us in this episode is Keith Stickley, the man behind Dr. Scream's Spook Show Revival. Keith has fashioned a Spook Show for modern audiences and is helping to keep this form of entertainment alive! We had a fun conversation that covered the history and pioneers of Spook Shows, as well as what goes on in Dr. Scream's shows and more!

So join us for this episode so you can learn all about this almost forgotten type of unique, and fun, entertainment!

Pictures from Dr Scream's Spook Show will be in the posting for this episode on our website. Dr. Scream's Spook Show Revival can be found at https://www.facebook.com/SpookShowRevival.

Then Is Now Episode 16 - 13 Days of Hallowtober - The Wolf Man (1941)27 Oct 202000:50:36

"Even a man who is pure in heart, and says his prayers by night, may still become a wolf when the wolfsbane blooms, and the autumn moon is bright." That's the famous phrase from Universal's classic film, The Wolf Man from 1941, and on today's episode Spency Domepiece and I break down the film and discuss not only it's plot and behind the scenes topics, but also it's place in film history and our hearts!

If you're new to the show, we present things that today's generation probably missed out on, yet is something they SHOULD know about. And the Wolf Man is certainly something that everyone should be familiar with! So go watch the film if you haven't seen it, or show it to someone who hasn't, then come back here and listen to our discourse on the iconic horror classic!

Then Is Now Episode 15 - 13 Days of Hallowtober - Demons (1985)26 Oct 202000:38:20

Our 8th episode of the 13 Days of Hallowtober special series on Then Is Now Podcast is upon us! Filmmaker Chris Esper joins me once again as we tackle the scary 1985 Italian horror film, Demons, directed by Lamberto Bava!

If Jaws made going to the beach a terrifying jaunt, and Friday the 13th made you afraid to go camping, then Demons makes cinema-going another frightening excursion! The picture concerns a group of people who receive tickets to a sneak preview of an unnamed film, and in the theater they find that it is a horror movie and is causing demons to appear in the cinema!

Join Chris and I as we break down the film, analyze its great direction and effects, and determine whether this movie holds up as a scary film!

Then Is Now Episode 14 - 13 Days of Hallowtober - Saw and Saw II (2004 & 2005)25 Oct 202000:51:22

Prepare to be scared, Fright Fans!! Today I am joined once again by Spency Domepiece and Squishy as we take a dive into not one, but two fright features: Saw (2004) and Saw II (2005)!!

Not your typical horror series, the Saw movies together are like a tightly written TV Series in which later films not only reference, but explain things from earlier films. Saw's reputation precedes it, and it is a far more than a gore film, and definitely NOT torture porn like Hostel! We encourage you to brave these two films, then listen to our discussion as we break them down and discuss the truly human aspects of these movies along with the scares, that make them so popular.

Then Is Now Episode 13 - 13 Days of Hallowtober - Night of the Living Dead (1968)24 Oct 202000:40:45

On today's show, we are joined once again by filmmaker Chris Esper to discuss the 1968 cult classic, Night of the Living Dead!!

The granddaddy of all modern zombie films, Night was deftly directed by the late, great George Romero and has served as the template for setting up the rules of how zombies should be portrayed and what happens if they bite someone.

Chris and I had so much fun breaking this film down and discussing it's making, so sit back once again and enjoy!

Then Is Now Episode 12 - 13 Days of Hallowtober - The Thing (1982)23 Oct 202001:07:32

Our 5th episode in the Then Is Now Series: 13 Days of Hallowtober is about my all-time favorite horror movie — John Carpenter's The Thing from 1982!

Whether you think this is one of the scariest movies ever, or you left the theater (or your living room) in apt rapture at the dazzling practical special effects, this movie captivates the audience in a claustrophobic tale of men trapped in an Antarctic science station and confronted with an alien creature that can look like anyone!

Joining me is podcaster and author Patrick Rahall aka Patsy the Angry Nerd, and it was very hard for the two of us not to gush over this classic picture!

In terms of special effects, no other film before or since has topped it, and it puts any CGI effect to shame! So check out The Thing if you haven't seen it, then listen to our lively discussion of the film!!

Don't forget to visit us at havenpodcasts.com. Let us know what you thought of this episode and the movie by sending us an email at thenisnow42@hotmail.com. And check out our other show, The East Meets the West, in which we discuss Spaghetti Westerns and Shaw Brothers films!

Greetings once again, Fright Fans! On today's 13 Weeks of Hallowtober episode, I am joined again by Spency Domepiece and a newcomer to the show: Squishy! This is going to prove to be a controversial episode and will garner quite the discussion as we analyze the picture The Shining from 1980.

Spency and Squishy, being younger folk, have a very different perspective on this film than I, and perhaps many fans of this classic horror movie! So please, join in the discussion and give us your thoughts on today's episode.

A strong comeback for director Richard Stanley, this film is sure to terrify all viewers!
