Jam Band Discipline w/Umphrey's McGee's Kris Myers :: Ep 190 The Rich Redmond Show
Saison 3 · Épisode 190
jeudi 1 août 2024 • Durée 01:02:43
Kris Myers was born on April 5, 1977. Receiving a drum kit at the age of 8, he took an early interest in jazz, rock and punk music. During high school Myers co-started his first musical outfit, a ska/punk band called the Skalawags. The group received a decent amount of success but denied an offer to tour Japan to instead pursue college degrees.
Myers attended Elmhurst College from 1995 – 1999 where he was a music major and the drummer in the Elmhurst College Jazz Band. Under director Doug Beach, the Elmhurst College Jazz Band played gigs in the U.S. and Internationally at events such as the Umbria Jazz Festival, Jakarta Jazz Festival and the Montreaux Jazz Festival.
In 2001 Myers enrolled in DePaul University where he earned his master’s degree in jazz drumming and was a member of the Rob Parton Orchestra. In addition to his involvement in school bands, Myers was playing in festivals with a variety of jazz artists such as Nicholas Payton, Diane Schuur, Randy Brecker, Dennis DiBlasio as well as local musicians Mark Colby and John McLean. Myers also was a member of Chicago jazz fusion band Kick the Cat.
Myers began playing drums for progressive-rock band Umphrey’s McGee in 2003 following the departure of original drummer Mike Mirro. With Myers at the helm, Umphrey’s has released ten albums and maintains a rigorous touring schedule of over 100 live shows per year. Umphrey’s has performed at legendary festivals and venues such as Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits, Fuji Rock Festival, South by Southwest, Red Rocks, The Ryman Theatre, The Beacon Theatre and more.
With Umphrey’s, Myers has shared the stage with countless notable musicians such as Buddy Guy, Huey Lewis, Ivan Neville, Les Claypool, Stephen Perkins, Mike Keneally, Joshua Redman, Bela Fleck, Taj Mahal, Victor Wooten, Adrian Belew, Stanley Jordan, Gene Ween, Derek Trucks and Jason Bonham.
In 2011 Myers was honored with the title of Best Jam Band Drummer by DRUM Magazine, beating jamband stalwarts such as Butch Trucks (The Allman Brothers) and Jon Fishman (Phish). In 2018, Myers was featured on the cover of Modern Drummer’s July issue. Myers placed second in the Experimental Rock category of the publication’s “Readers Poll Awards” behind St. Vincent drummer Matt Johnson.
When he’s not behind the drum kit, Myers enjoys playing golf, attending concerts, hiking and collecting art.

101 - Casey “Bassy” Abrams :: Master of the Bottom End
mercredi 3 février 2021 • Durée 01:00:01
Vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Casey Abrams became an overnight celebrity in January 2011, when he was selected to be a contestant on the popular televised talent competition American Idol.

Abrams was born on February 12, 1991, in Austin, Texas. Abrams' family lived in Illinois for several years before settling in Idyllwild, California, where his father taught filmmaking at the Idyllwild Arts Academy. Abrams became a student at Idyllwild, where he studied both jazz and classical music, with emphasis on the double bass and piano. In addition to jazz, Abrams developed a fondness for classic jazz and pop vocalists such as Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles, and James Taylor, and began studying singing as well as instrumental performance.
When the producers of American Idol began holding auditions for their tenth season, Abrams appeared at the tryouts in Austin, and his version of Ray Charles' "I Don't Need No Doctor" impressed the judges, who made him one of the 24 semi-finalists who took part in the televised competition in Los Angeles. Abrams' warm, engaging style and likable personality made him a favorite with American Idol's viewers as well as the judges, as did his eclectic choices of material, ranging from Ella Fitzgerald to Nirvana. When Abrams fared poorly in the voting after reaching the Top 11, the show's judges made the rare choice to "save" him, intervening to keep him in the running after an impressive performance of Elton John's "Your Song." However, four weeks later, Abrams was finally voted off the show, coming in sixth place while Scotty McCreery came in first.
After making a number of television appearances and taking part in the annual American Idol concert tour, Abrams made his recording debut in the fall of 2011, when he and Haley Reinhart (another season ten contestant) recorded a duet version of the seasonal favorite "Baby, It's Cold Outside" that was issued as a single. In January 2012, Concord Music Group announced they'd signed Abrams to a record deal, and his self-titled debut album was released in June 2012.
Beginning in 2014, Abrams became involved with Scott Bradlee's jazz-themed covers ensemble Postmodern Jukebox, joining the group on several tours and recording fan favorite covers with them like a New Orleans' take on Sam Smith's "I'm Not the Only One" and a version of Haddaway's "What Is Love" done in the style of the Isley Brothers. His ebullient vocal delivery and double bass chops made him a strong fit for the band, even as he continued to record his own music, including the 2016 EP Tales from the Gingerbread House. 2018 saw the release of Abrams' third full-length, I Put a Spell on You, while he dipped back into his roots the following year with the aptly titled effort Jazz.

100 - Kenny Aronoff :: Passion and Persistence Personified
mercredi 27 janvier 2021 • Durée 01:03:38
Although probably best known as a member of John Mellencamp's backing band, drummer Kenny Aronoff is one of rock's most in-demand session players, having played with some of the genre's biggest names.
******LISTEN TO THIS EPISODE AND SUBSCRIBE!!!
www.richredmond.com/listen
Raised in Massachusetts, Aronoff was self-taught early on, as he played in his first band at the age of ten (and subsequently played in various local rock outfits throughout his teenage years). But by the age of 16, Aronoff began to seriously study classical music, as he picked up a thing or two from members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, before studying at the University of Massachusetts and at Indiana University (where he was awarded a 'Performer's Certificate'). Even during summers off from his schooling, Aronoff continued to hone his chops by playing at both the Aspen and Tanglewood Music Festivals. Upon graduating from Indiana University in 1976, Aronoff was offered spots playing timpani with several different orchestras throughout the world, but turned down the offers to relocate back north - studying and playing (mostly fusion-jazz) in both Boston and New York. After a year, Aronoff opted to relocate back to Indiana, where he paid his dues over the next few years playing regularly with bands on the Midwest club circuit.
By 1980, Aronoff had landed the break in his music career that he had long sought - nabbing a spot in John Mellencamp's group. Although Mellencamp had released several albums during the late '70s, it was shortly after Aronoff's arrival into the band that Mellencamp's career took off, as he focused more on a roots-rock direction/sound. Aronoff remained with Mellencamp for over 15 years, supplying the back beat on such hit albums as 1980's Nothin' Matters, 1982's American Fool, 1983's Uh-Huh, 1985's Scarecrow, 1987's Lonesome Jubilee, 1989's Big Daddy, 1991's Whenever We Wanted, 1993's Human Wheels, 1994's Dance Naked, and 1996's Mr. Happy Go Lucky.
Beginning in the mid '80s, Aronoff served as a session drummer for countless renowned artists, as he played on albums by Bob Dylan, Jon Bon Jovi, Bob Seger, Belinda Carlisle, Indigo Girls, Meat Loaf, Lisa Germano, Melissa Etheridge, Rolling Stones, Joe Cocker, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Alice Cooper, Travis Tritt, and Willie Nelson, among countless others. Besides backing other artists on record, Aronoff has also performed and/or toured alongside others besides Mellencamp, including Willie Nelson, Melissa Etheridge, Bob Seger, John Fogerty, Richie Sambora, Smashing Pumpkins, Joe Cocker and many others. Additionally, Aronoff has taught as an associate professor at Indiana University, performed at drum clinics, and produced several instructional videos, including Power Workout One, Power Workout Two, and Laying it Down: the Basics of Rock Drumming. Aronoff has also been named the top 'Pop/Rock Drummer' four five years and 'Studio Drummer' for four years by the readers of Modern Drummer Magazine, proving that his talents haven't gone unnoticed by music fans worldwide.
