What a Thriving Mom Looks Like

Saison 1 · Épisode 48

mardi 10 septembre 2024Durée 39:51

A lot of times the go-to words that are associated with motherhood are chaotic, stressful, lonely, and more. But what if we could flip it around and focus more on the positive connotations of motherhood? I asked my community how they would most like to feel about motherhood, and a couple of the words that came up over and over were “joy” and “effortless”. So today I want to talk about this concept of the hardest job that we're all doing (which is motherhood) and how can that be effortless? And what does a thriving mom look like? This is not meant to discredit anyone’s motherhood experience, but instead speak to a lot of the difficulties that many of us face every single day. But to me, effortlessness isn’t about what something looks like, but more on how my day to day feels – how I show up to and react to the normal parts of motherhood. So listen in to hear how you can feel more grounded, more peaceful, and yes… effortless and thriving.

9 Morning Habits to Set Your Day Up for Success

Saison 1 · Épisode 47

mardi 3 septembre 2024Durée 39:13

If you are in a busy season of motherhood, it doesn't mean that you can't be doing nourishing things for yourself, but it does mean that sometimes that we're going to be maybe finding less rest for a period of time. However, I think having these nurturing things within our day that are just a part of our daily routine are so helpful for times when we are busy. Personally, if I didn't have my morning meditation, if I didn't have my journaling, if I didn't have my walks, if I didn't have my protein-filled meals, I would be endlessly burnt out. I have found these things to be so helpful for me that they have become a regular part of my routine and I hope that you can find items like that in your day, too. So that’s what we’re chatting about today – morning habits to set your day up for success. I had a hard time narrowing these down because I think that they're all important (the order mentioned here isn’t important)! I think that we all need to kind of analyze our lives, analyze our days and pick and choose what's going to be most nourishing to ourselves, most realistic, and what's going to work better for us.

Why Sleep Training is so Dangerous

Saison 1 · Épisode 38

mardi 2 juillet 2024Durée 30:32

Welcome back to The Resting in Motherhood Podcast, today’s episode is going to be a little bit spicy because we are talking about why sleep training is so dangerous. Spoiler alert: it is not about the attachment aspect, it is not about not responding to cries, or even the trauma aspect. What I want to talk about today is the fact that sleep training views sleep as a behavior, meaning that when you leave your child to cry it out, or you're doing Ferber, or the chair method, or pick up put down, these are all behavioral modifications, they have absolutely nothing, and I mean nothing, to do with sleep. Sleep is a biological function, which means nothing about sleep has been learned. The only thing that has been learned when sleep training is used is that cries won't be answered at night. So we have modified the behavior, we have modified the crying. We have not modified a biological function, which is sleep. I’m diving into this more as well as sharing what can be done if sleep is currently feeling unsustainable for you and your little one.

The First Ever Q&A Episode!

Saison 1 · Épisode 37

mardi 25 juin 2024Durée 39:12

Today we are actually going to be doing something that I've never done on the podcast, which I'm really, really excited about – a Q&A episode! If you follow me on Instagram, you know that I do a weekly question and answer session, and for this most recent one, I collected the questions and I will be answering them throughout this episode. I think this will be really fun because when I do it on Instagram, I can only go so deep because I have a time limit. So let’s dive in. If you want your own questions answered? Follow me on Instagram, @resting_in_motherhood and submit it on the next Q&A day!

Questions Answered:

  • We are going to a party tonight and my toddler will have a late night. Should I let her catch up the next day or cap her nap?
  • Some toddlers sleep 12 hours at night, but not mine. Is it too late to try supporting them?
  • Is it possible for a 16 month old who is breastfeeding to sleep through the night?
  • When did you first have a night away from your daughter?
  • Do you have guidance on separation and co-parenting with a 3 year old? Will she be okay?
  • How old was Lilah when you took your first solo trip?
  • I stopped using a binky with my 26 month old and now naps and bedtime are taking one hour or more. Do you have tips for self soothing?
  • What is the biggest learning experience you’ve had since you started your business?
  • If my family or friends choose to sleep train, should I say something?
  • Is there something developmental around 7 years of age that makes them not want to go to bed?
  • What is something you’re most proud of?
  • How do you manage and how long does separation anxiety last at 12 months?
  • How did you get to the point where you were okay being away from Lilah?

Babies, Their Brains, and Secure Attachment with Michelle Charriere

Saison 1 · Épisode 36

mardi 18 juin 2024Durée 48:33

Before I even started my podcast, I knew that I’d want to have today’s guest on the show — welcome Michelle Charriere,  a birth to five mental health specialist who supports parents in understanding their child's attachment and how to nurture security in their little ones. I’m excited to have her on because there’s a lot of buzz around secure attachment… is it actually healthy? Does it lead to a dependent child? How do you create a relationship that works for both parent and child? How does it relate to sleep? We’re getting into all of it in the full episode. Michelle was such an amazing resource for me when I was a new mom, so I know that this episode is going to be an amazing addition to your parenting toolbelt. I can’t wait to hear your favorite takeaways!

Sleep Associations: What They Are & How to Switch Them

Saison 1 · Épisode 35

mardi 11 juin 2024Durée 31:26

As I’m recording this episode, I’m going through a beautiful transition: it’s Lilah’s last day of school (and I was so worried about her starting school on her first day!) and the summer excitement is almost in full swing. This got me thinking about how there are also transition periods when it comes to baby and toddler sleep, whether it’s starting daycare, introducing a new caregiver, or simply old ways of supporting your child to sleep not working anymore. Sleep associations are what your little one’s brain associates with going to sleep (ex: bouncing), but as your child grows, you may want to introduce new sleep associations and phase out the old ones. In this episode, I’m sharing practical tips on how to gently switch your baby or toddler’s sleep associations to find more rest in motherhood while showing your LO that sleep is a safe space.

Sleep Train Obsessed: There’s no such thing as a “sleep hack”

Saison 1 · Épisode 34

mardi 4 juin 2024Durée 38:39

Have you heard of the rice glove hack to get your baby to sleep longer? Or maybe you’re longing for a smart sleeper like the Snoo? I get it… when you’re up every 1-2 hours at night and you’re exhausted, these tools can feel like they’d be a lifesaver. But there is truly no such thing as a healthy sleep hack. Instead, they are mismatching us with who our babies are and what they biologically need. So what can you do to get more rest without falling for the scare tactics of the sleep training industry? Let’s break it down on this episode of Resting in Motherhood.

Finding Rest in Traveling (With and Without Your Little One!)

Saison 1 · Épisode 33

mardi 28 mai 2024Durée 47:48

I’m recording this episode after a glorious, life-giving weekend away on a business retreat - my first-ever trip without Lilah! I got to connect with amazing women who are also moms and business owners, and the truth is…I wish I didn’t wait so long in my motherhood journey to do something like this. You may feel that you’re not ready to leave your little one at home yet, but doing something for yourself WILL fill your cup so you can pour more into your family. In this solo episode, I’m going to share tips and mindset shifts for traveling both with AND without your little one so you can feel recharged and rested while living through new experiences both as a mom and as your own person!

3 Tips for Protecting Your Mental Health in Motherhood

Saison 1 · Épisode 32

mardi 21 mai 2024Durée 35:55

Recently I was able to practice finding rest in motherhood by holding a boundary by encouraging Lilah to stay over at her dad’s house. As we’ve entered this new norm of her staying at her dad’s house more often, I know the transition isn’t 100% easy for her, but it is a necessary one that she (and I) will be better for. This leads me into what I want to talk about today when it comes to protecting your mental health in motherhood – specifically in regards to protecting yourself against comparing yourself to other moms on the internet or in your real life, feeling like you're maybe not doing it right or like you're being judged. I know I could cover this topic on probably 100 different podcast episodes, but specifically what I want to cover today is protecting ourselves against those feelings of comparison that are so common in this day and age of social media. Listen to the full episode because I’m sharing three easy, reasonable, and actionable steps to help you work through feelings of not enoughness.

Healing Your Family’s Gut Health (and Improving Sleep!) with Cheryl Sew Hoy

Saison 1 · Épisode 31

mardi 14 mai 2024Durée 43:15

Did you know that your child’s healthy gut starts in the first 1000 days of life? Join me for an eye-opening conversation on all things gut health with Cheryl Sew Hoy, a mama of two and the founder of Tiny Health, the #1 gut test for moms & babies 0-3 years old. Research shows that your gut health is intimately intertwined with your baby’s all throughout pregnancy and breastfeeding. Improving imbalances in your child’s gut doesn’t only help with digestive health, but also prevents chronic conditions and allergies and even positively affects sleep! Cheryl and I discuss how to nurture your child’s (and yours!) microbiome from pregnancy to 3+ years and beyond so you can thrive as a family.
