Building More Human-ness Into Your Business10 Apr 202400:17:35

Have you ever thought about how we as humans bring so much uniqueness to our businesses - our experiences, our successes, our failures, our skills and struggles, our goals and versions of success... Yet we're often given the same steps to follow to get to where we want to be.

As a mentor (and as a designer!), I love to bring more human-ness into the businesses of the designers I work with and I'd love to share some of my favourite lessons that I have learnt as I've tried to build my business with myself as a key focus. All of the messiness included!

I really hope you enjoy the episode! To hear more from me, you can sign up for my weekly email series, The Confident Creative Expert below:

Choose Your Own Version of Consistency03 Apr 202400:22:22

When it comes to consistency, we're told that this is a MUST DO in business. From consistent marketing (you have to post on Instagram five times a week, you have to create more video content, you have to engage with your audience every day), to showing up consistently (you should be working on your business every week, you should join more programs, you need to work on more passion projects) - we know consistency is a must.

But what we're not told as much, is that you get to choose what consistency looks like for you. If your business is unique and your goals are unique, we will all also have a version of consistency that helps us reach those goals that are perfect for us and fit with our time, energy and creativity!

Yes, consistency is so important. Because the consistency we can control (like marketing, visibility, engagement, development) helps us build consistency in the areas we have a little less control over (like monthly income, lead generation, project bookings and sales).

So in this episode, I'm sharing some tips to help you find and develop what consistency can look like in your own business, so you can ignore the advice that isn't relevant to you!

Sustainability Lessons from 10 Years in Business16 Aug 202300:28:52

As of this year, I have been running my design studio for ten years (!!), and in that time have managed to build my dream job which has been my most sustainable and secure job so far. We're so often told how working for yourself isn't sustainable and isn't secure that I just wanted to share a few lessons that I've learned in building my business with sustainability, consistency, and joy as my main priorities.

This is more of a chatty episode where I talk through a few pivotal moments and lessons that have allowed me to have sustainability as a foundation in my business over the past 10 years!

I really hope you enjoy the episode! As mentioned in the episode, my group program for designers, The Clubhouse, is launching again in September and the waitlist is now open! Five Pricing Myths That Stop You Raising Your Rates24 May 202300:23:07

I haven't chatted about money for a while so I wanted to share an episode about pricing! In the past, I've told myself so many things that I assumed were true about pricing - all of which stopped me from raising my rates and working towards my bigger income goals. As soon as I took control over my thoughts about pricing, I started to feel more confident and comfortable with pricing and could easily raise my prices (even tripling at times!)

Focusing on Sustainability Over Quick Results20 Dec 202300:22:11

The Clubhouse waitlist is Open! My signature group mentoring program for designers is opening on the 15th January for waitlist members to sign up with an exclusive 1:1 bonus! If you'd like to learn more and work with me in 2024, you can sign up to the waitlist here

When you have your eyes on big goals and know you have what it takes to get there, it can be easy to focus on whatever feels like it’ll get you to where you want to be quicker. But sometimes the things that get us to reach those goals quicker are actually getting us further away from where we want to be in the long-term and further away from building a sustainable business.

So how do we focus on sustainable elements in our business instead of quick results - even when we want the quicker results? Let's talk about it!

Planning For An Extended Business Break13 Apr 202100:10:53

You may or may not know that I am currently on maternity leave as I’m having my first baby this month! As soon as I found out, I was straight into planning mode trying to figure out how I could fit maternity leave around my business and managing things like paying my bills and not leaving clients hanging.

In this episode, I wanted to pull together all of my tips for taking an extended break, whether like me you’re planning to have a baby and want to get organised in advance or if you just want to fit in a longer break or holiday into your schedule. I think these will help for all scenarios! Even actually if you just want to take 2 weeks off to go on holiday (when that’s allowed again of course…).

Additional Income Streams for Designers30 Mar 202100:11:26

Over the past few years, I’ve experimented with quite a few different additional income streams including courses about design, coaching programmes both one to one and in groups, e-books, design elements, website templates, graphic templates and a few more - yes I’ve tried a lot of things!

Because of the income streams I’ve added into my business, I’ve been able to cut down to working 3 days a week, I’ve been able to book fewer client projects at a time which saves me a lot of energy and time and I’ve also been able to dedicate some time to other areas which I’m passionate about like coaching and working with other designers.

So let’s jump into a few different income streams you can add into your business to generate some additional money and help you hopefully work a little bit less!

Common Design Client Problems (And How to Avoid Them!)09 Mar 202100:09:55

So for any service-based business, you are likely to run into some client issues along the way - it's perfectly natural for this to happen every now and then! But what do we do when we run into these issues? And is there a solution for the most common client problems?

Before we jump into the advice I have for a few designer-specific client issues, it's important to know that most of the time and I don’t want you to take this the wrong way because I mean absolutely no offence at all, but these client issues and anything that goes wrong in a project - well it’s mostly our own fault!

That's right... we're usually the problem! Now don’t worry because I’m sure you haven’t realised that the problem could be from your end but I have found time and time again, aside from a rare few which are possibly just not meant to be, the designer in the project could have done something earlier on or within their process to stop the issue occurring.

How to Make Sales Calls Less Scary02 Mar 202100:10:19

I’m talking today about something which haunted me for a while when I first set up my business and something I know a lot of designers feel a bit apprehensive about and that is sales calls!

I know when I just started working with clients I dreaded jumping on any type of calls and would end up getting so nervous that I’m pretty sure they ended up being more of a hindrance than a help when it came to actually booking projects. But over time, I’ve managed to really build up my confidence and make sure that all sales calls were actually a benefit and a chance for me and my clients to get to know each other and make sure we’re a good fit for their project.

I think face to face contact and having these calls are so important for any designer to be able to share their expertise with a potential client and so I would love to help you all feel even a little bit more confident on a call to help you book more clients and make sure they’re dream clients too!

Booking Out Your Design Projects in Advance23 Feb 202100:11:30

I’m talking today about something that people ask me about often which is booking up your schedule in advance! I think the reason people ask me quite often is that for the past few years, I’ve been regularly booked up in advance from anywhere between 2 and 6 months. At the moment, as I’ll be taking some maternity leave for a few months, I’m booking projects 6 months in advance and still managing to book clients for this time and it doesn’t put people off at all.

Booking in advance isn’t about looking exclusive or making people wait, the two huge benefits to having a schedule and giving clients a certain time to work with you is, first of all, your workload can be much more organised which means you don’t overload yourself with too much work and you know exactly how many projects you can take on at any time. And then secondly, having a more organised schedule of clients means you can more accurately plan your income and it can also make it much more consistent for you - and isn’t that just a dream for some who is self-employed!

What IS Your Version of Success?09 Feb 202100:08:29

In a few different episodes and through a lot of what I talk about in The Daring Designers Club, I mention working towards your version of success instead of anyone else’s. This for me is the best bit of advice I can give when it comes to avoiding comparison or getting stuck with what goals to work towards.

But, what if you don’t know what your version of success looks like? This is perfectly possible and I myself have had periods in the past where I just keep on going and see how things go instead of figuring outwhat my actual goals are and what I’m working towards.

So today’s episode is going to be just that! We’re going to talk about how to find what your version of success would look like so you can plan your goals and get a really good idea of where you want to be in the next 2, 5 or even 10 years.

Also, in this episode, I mention the amazing Sophie Cliff who works wonders for people trying to find a little more joy in their lives. Head over to her website here!

How to Be a 100% Authentic Business Owner19 Jan 202100:12:32

Being a 100% authentic business owner can be really difficult - it’s not like just being yourself as a person or showing your personality. It’s about making decisions in your business and building your business in a way that feels really comfortable and helps you reach any goals you have without compromising who you are and what feels like it will work for you.

I feel very strongly that there is no one way to do things in any single business and the chances are one piece of advice will not fit for every business owner. If you’re a long term listener of the podcast, you’ll know that with everything I share, there are always caveats that you can listen to what I’m saying and then twist or mould it into a version of that thing which works for you and your business.

So today, I really want to give you some tips on how you can stick 100% to being your authentic business owner self, make decisions which feel like a good fit and avoid any “noise” which doesn’t suit you.

Do You Know Who Your Dream Clients Are?12 Jan 202100:12:41

I wanted to jump back into the podcast by talking about a topic I think about and talk about with coaching clients so much and one which I think can be really crucial to running a successful business and getting yourself to where you want to be and that is dream clients.

Thinking about who your dream clients are, even if they’re huge, huge businesses or people who have hundreds of thousands of followers on Instagram, can really help you figure out how to run your business and can give you amazing foundations for how you present your marketing, your branding, your pricing, your portfolio, your content - basically every part of your business.

Setting Achievable Goals Which Don't Overwhelm You15 Dec 202000:11:41

As we’re at the end of the year, I had to chat all things goals just like everyone else in the world right now! But now is a really good time to think about our goals for the year ahead because we’re winding down and thinking forward to where we would like to be this time next December.

The reason I wanted to create this particular episode about goals which is making your goals achievable instead of overwhelming is that I have in the past been very good at setting goals which have actually been counterproductive because they feel too much. So I know exactly where I want to be but when I get it down on paper, I chicken out a bit and think it’s too much and then kind of give up along the way. So if you feel the same way, here are the tips I’ve found work best for setting your achievable goals which you can work towards without feeling overwhelmed.

Six Boundaries You Need to Avoid Business Burn Out01 Dec 202000:17:47

I’m jumping into one of my favourite topics to talk about with coaching clients, other designers and actually anyone who is self-employed and that is the subject of boundaries. I very passionately believe that we as business owners should be in total control of first of all our businesses but second of all, the lives that we lead around our businesses.

It can be so incredibly easy to let boundaries slide when you’re feeling under pressure or when you want to give a really good impression to your clients but in my experience, letting any form of boundaries fall out of place is a one way ticket to stress, overworking and burn out. All things which I’m pretty keen for us all to avoid!

As mentioned in the episode, I’m currently booking my final one-to-one coaching slot to help designers with confidence, pricing, process, marketing and basically everything we talk about in these episodes!
