About Dr. Norwitz
Dr. Nick Norwitz is a researcher-educator whose mantra is “Stay Curious” and whose mission is to “Make Metabolic Health Mainstream.” He graduated Valedictorian from Dartmouth College in 2018, majoring in Cell Biology and Biochemistry. He then completed his PhD in Metabolism at the University of Oxford in 2021, before attending Harvard Medical School to complete his MD. Dr. Norwitz enthusiasm for the field of Metabolism derives from a personal struggle with severe Inflammatory Bowel Disease that left him physically emaciated, mentally depleted, and emotionally fragmented. In desperation, he found that a ketogenic diet put his disease into remission where conventional approaches had failed. Dr. Chris Palmer | Brain Energy: The Metabolic Theory of Mental Illness | The Metabolic Link Ep. 47
Épisode 47
mardi 13 août 2024 • Durée 01:04:33
Become a member of The Metabolic Initiative to access a robust bank of cutting edge metabolic health content, private ad-free podcast episodes, and earn CMEs here!
More than a billion people around the world suffer from mental and neurological disorders, and the numbers are escalating rapidly. Current treatments often fail to provide relief, resulting in many patients struggling with persistent symptoms and resistance to available therapies.
In this episode, we’re sharing a full presentation by world-renowned Harvard Psychiatrist, Dr. Christopher Palmer, filmed at Metabolic Health Summit 2024. Dr. Palmer presents a novel perspective that examines the potential link between metabolic dysfunction and mental illness. His theory, Brain Energy, proposes that metabolic dysfunction may serve as a unifying mechanism underlying various mental health conditions.
Key highlights from this episode include:
- A dive into the surge in prevalence of mental disorders such as autism, ADHD, and depression
- Current limitations and challenges within traditional treatment options
- Emerging evidence suggesting metabolic dysfunction as a potential root cause of mental illnesses
- The role of the ketogenic diet and other innovative treatment
Join us for an insightful exploration with Dr. Palmer as we examine how metabolism could reshape our understanding and treatment of mental health conditions.
About Dr. Chris Palmer
Dr. Christopher M. Palmer is a Harvard psychiatrist and researcher working at the interface of metabolism and mental health. He is the Founder and Director of the Metabolic and Mental Health Program and the Director of the Department of Postgraduate and Continuing Education at McLean Hospital and an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. For almost 30 years, he has held administrative, educational, research, and clinical roles in psychiatry at McLean and Harvard. He has been pioneering the use of the medical ketogenic diet in the treatment of psychiatric disorders—conducting research in this area, treating patients, writing, and speaking around the world on this topic. Most recently, he has proposed that mental disorders can be understood as metabolic disorders affecting the brain, which has received widespread recognition in both national and international media outlets.

Journal Club: Exploring Immune Response to Diet: Vegan vs Ketogenic Ep. 38
Épisode 38
mardi 9 avril 2024 • Durée 50:53
In this episode of The Metabolic Link, Victoria Field, Dr. Dominic D'Agostino, and Dr. Angela Poff dive into a fascinating new paper that compares the metabolic and immune impacts of ketogenic and vegan diets in humans.
The study, titled “Differential Peripheral Immune Signatures Elicited by Vegan Versus Ketogenic Diets in Humans” takes a deep dive into the multi-omic effects of these two very different dietary approaches. The researchers found that just two weeks on a ketogenic diet significantly enhanced markers of adaptive immunity, while the vegan diet was associated with increased innate immune function.
The hosts unpack these findings, discussing the potential mechanisms behind the divergent immune signatures, the limitations of the short-term study design, and the need for further research.
They also highlight the importance of carefully standardizing the macronutrient and micronutrient compositions of the dietary interventions to isolate the key drivers of the observed changes.
Overall, this episode provides a thought-provoking look at the profound impacts that diet can have on the functioning of our immune system, setting the stage for future studies exploring the therapeutic potential of nutritional approaches.

Understanding The Lean Mass Hyper Responder w/ Dr. Nick Norwitz and Dave Feldman | The Metabolic Link Ep. 32
Épisode 32
vendredi 12 janvier 2024 • Durée 01:07:23
We’ve just launched an extra and exciting episode of The Metabolic Link podcast! It features an eye-opening conversation between our host Dominic D’Agostino PhD, and guests Dave Feldman and Dr. Nick Norwitz, two researchers and MHS 2024 speakers spearheading investigations into the lean mass hyperresponder (LMHR) phenotype.
Dave Feldman is a software engineer who became deeply interested in lipidology after seeing his cholesterol spike on a low-carb, high-fat diet. He has since performed self-experiments and published several papers on the possible mechanisms behind LMHR. He is currently conducting a clinical study out of UCLA through his newly formed public charity, the Citizen Science Foundation.
Nicholas Norwitz completed his PhD at the University of Oxford and his thesis focused on ketone metabolism and neurodegenerative diseases. He is currently a medical student at Harvard Medical School.
In this episode Dave, Dr. Norwitz, and Dr. D'Agostino dive into…
- The debate around whether saturated fat drives increased LDL levels, especially in the LMHR phenotype.
- The "Lipid Energy Model" hypothesizing a metabolic/physiological process underlying LMHR phenotype.
- Concerns about erroneously grouping lean mass hyperresponders with familial hypercholesterolemia patients.
- The importance of separating discussions of underlying mechanism from clinical recommendations.
- Their vision for the future direction of LMHR research and public education on this topic.
Be sure to secure your spot at MHS 2024 in Clearwater Beach, Florida, where Dave and Nick will be presenting their latest research! Both virtual and in-person seats are still available at metabolichealthsummit.com.
