The One About… TRL Curriculum Evaluation Guidelines with Dr. Maria Murray and Kari Kurto Here is a link to the Curriculum Evaluation Guidelines: https://www.thereadingleague.org/curriculum-evaluation-guidelines/ When reviewing curricula for Tier I instruction, it is essential to ensure they do not include instructional practices that are not aligned with the scientific evidence base of how children learn to read. The Curriculum Evaluation Guidelines are designed to highlight any non-aligned practices, or “red flags,” that may be present. Here is a landing page with more information on the Curriculum Navigation Reports: https://www.thereadingleague.org/media/introducing-the-reading-leagues-curriculum-navigation-reports/ Each report provides an in-depth examination of each curriculum’s components based on evidence-aligned practices. One of the reports’ unique strengths is their emphasis on identifying ‘red flag’ practices—those that do not align with the scientific evidence base. These reports are the only ones that prioritize identifying practices that could prevent students from developing skilled reading. Maria S. Murray is the founder, CEO and President of The Reading League. A pioneer in the “science of reading” movement, she has been active in this field for more than 20 years. Prior to founding The Reading League, Maria was an associate professor at SUNY Oswego where she taught courses related to literacy assessment and intervention for 10 years. The One About… Is ‘Sold a Story’ an incomplete and oversimplified picture of reading? Nick Covington’s view “My goal with this piece is to capture the questions and criticisms that I have not just about the narrative of Sold A Story but of the broader movement toward “The Science of Reading,” and bring in other evidence and perspectives that inform my own. I hope to make the case that “The Science of Reading” is not a useful label to describe the multiple goals of literacy; that investment in teacher professionalization is inoculation against being Sold A Story; and that the unproductive and divisive Reading Wars actually make it more difficult for us to think about how to cultivate literate kids.” – Nick Covington Nick Covington bio: Nick is the creative director for the Human Restoration Project and former high school Social Studies teacher in Iowa public Schools. The One About: Don’t Discard Comprehension Strategies with Jennifer Buckingham “The arguments against teaching comprehension skills and strategies are often framed in these ways: 1) Comprehension skills/strategies are not generic, transferable competencies … so it is a waste of time to teach them explicitly. 2) Reading comprehension is highly dependent on background knowledge … so an evidence-based approach to reading comprehension is to always embed instruction in a knowledge-building context. These two statements are only partly true.” – Jennifer Buckingham Article: Don’t Discard Comprehension Strategies June 22, 2023 https://fivefromfive.com.au/blog/dont-discard-comprehension-strategies/ Bio:“Dr Jennifer Buckingham OAM is Director of Strategy and Senior Research Fellow at MultiLit, and Director of the Five from Five Project. The One About… Selective Research Findings with Dr. Michael Paff As we turn back the clocks, it looks like some educators are trying to turn back the hands of time and poke holes in the Science of Reading. Article “Stories Grounded in Decades of Research What We Truly Know About the Teaching of Reading” Quote “While science of reading advocates claim to be research-based, decades of reading scholarship have recognized reading as complex, multidimensional, and mediated by social and cultural practices.” ILA, The Reading Teacher November 2, 2023 httpsila.onlinelibrary.wiley.comdoi10.1002trtr.2258

The One About: Writing Research with Stephen Ciullo and Alyson Collins Article #1 The findings from this study raise substantial concerns about the preparation to teach writing general and special education teachers receive in their preservice program. “Special and General Education Teachers’ Beliefs About Writing and Writing Instruction” Steve Graham, EdD, Alyson A. Collins, PhD, and Stephen Ciullo, PhD https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1177/00222194221092156 Article #2 More emphasis needs to be placed on teaching writing and reading together. Such instruction and research on its effectiveness needs to be expanded so that teachers and schools have access to a more nuanced, integrated, and spiraled model or combining writing, reading, and content instruction. “Writing Expository Essays from Social Studies Texts: A Self-Regulated Strategy Development Study” Collins, Alyson A.; Ciullo, Stephen; Graham, Steve; https://eric.ed.gov/?id=EJ1306487 Dr. Stephen Ciullo Bio: Stephen Ciullo is an Associate Professor of Special Education at Texas State University. His research focuses on two topics. First, he studies the extent to which classroom writing instruction provided to students with disabilities aligns with research evidence, and how observed instruction relates to students’ writing performance. Second, Stephen is interested in interventions that enhance teachers’ effectiveness in the area of writing and content-area knowledge. The One About… The Reading Recovery Lawsuit with Steve Dykstra
The Reading Recovery Council of North America filed a lawsuit against Ohio Governor Mike DeWine. Dr. Steve Dykstra joins us to discuss this breaking news! We also asked Steve to respond to Bruce Howlett’s revised blog that originally appeared on the Learning by Design website. Howlett and Jan Wasowicz have joined forces to ignite a “Reading Shift” that pulls the best practices from both Balanced Literacy and Structured Literacy. Dr. Steve Dykstra has worked as a psychologist for over thirty years in the public sector. Reading Recovery Press Release https://readingrecovery.org/press-release/ “The Reading Shift – Elevating Literacy Goals, Methods, and Discourse, in Unison” By Bruce Howlett and Jan Wasowicz, Ph.D.
Memorable Quote: “We have a choice – continue to debate traditional methods that haven’t produced widespread and enduring literacy gains or excitedly embrace newer and deeper methods that provide a path to near universal literacy gains across the English-speaking world.”

Lifting literacy Through Handwriting Instruction with Shawn Datchuk
“Handwriting can be an effective way for students to learn important early reading and writing skills. As noted in a recent systematic review, handwriting instruction during kindergarten can improve both writing and reading outcomes, such as knowledge of letter names and sounds, spelling, and word reading (Ray et al., 2022). Indeed, research suggests a close link between writing and reading overall, including a strong relationship between the development of early writing and reading skills, such as spelling and word reading (Kim et al., 2024). In spite of these ties, handwriting is rarely mentioned in the national conversation on how to improve the reading performance of elementary students”
Shawn Datchuk is the director of the Iowa Reading Research Center and a faculty member in the University of Iowa College of Education. Under his direction, Shawn aims to ensure that the IRRC’s efforts: (a) make it easier for teachers to teach reading and (b

The One About… Multicomponent Literacy Instruction with Bruce Howlett Article: Our Choice: Rapidly Translate, Evaluate and Adopt Innovative Literacy Methods or Prolong the Reading Wars Bruce Howlett with Caitlin S. Howlett, Ph.D. September 6, 2023 (Opinions presented are those of the guest authors and not necessarily those of SPELL-Links | Learning By Design. They are presented to generate new insights, critical thinking, and solutions for educators and learners.) Excerpt: “As we will see, scholars have questioned the major points of contention — explicit teaching versus implicit learning, and word recognition versus meaning – and found them to be false dichotomies; what the two camps see as opposing concepts are so interdependent as to be inseparable. From this fresh perspective these thought leaders have crafted a new path forward for developmental literacy instruction. This refreshing perspective has been hiding in plain sight, with its transformative concepts and methods wholly absorbed into the preexisting beliefs and values of both camps. So too, has a solution to the other pressing literacy improvement issue, the lack of a process to rapidly translate and evaluate innovative research into activities that any teacher could successfully use with any student. We have a choice – continue to debate illusionary conflicts, keep talking past each other and attempting to convert the opposition to our side, while pushing for more time-consuming training — or we can move forward, embracing concepts and methods that clearly supersede – but do not negate – our present beliefs, values and practices.” – Bruce and Caitlin Howlett, co- authors of Sparking the Reading Shift
