Today we talk with Dr Tiny Masupe, a clinician-scientist, senior lecturer and assistant program director for the Master of Medicine (MMed) Public Health at the University of Botswana (UB). She has a Bachelor of Medicine & Bachelor of Surgery (MBBCh) from Cardiff UK, Master’s in Public Health from South Africa, Master of Science in Occupational Medicine from Manchester UK and currently a PhD fellow in Non-Communicable Diseases focusing on type 2 diabetes and hypertension at the University of the Western Cape, South Africa. She is the first recipient of the Neil Nathanson AfyaBora Global Health leadership award. Today we talk with Maria-Christina Zennaro, a Research Professor at the French National Institute of Health and Medical Research (Inserm). She is the head of the team “Genetic mechanisms of aldosterone related disorders” at INSERM, the Paris Cardiovascular Research Center, and University of Paris. She is also an associated investigator at the Genetics Department of the European Hospital Georges Pompidou in Paris, France. Maria-Christina is coordinator of the EU-funded Horizon 2020 research and innovation project ENS@T-HT, and partner of the Horizon 2020 MINDSHIFT project. She is very active in many societies, where she is president of the European Section of Aldosterone council (ESAC)-France, a member of the Executive Committee of the International Aldosterone Conference and the European Council on Cardiovascular Research between other appointments. And of interest to us today, Maria Christina has played a major role in the career development of many young researchers, and we are excited to hear all about her mentoring experiences today.

Hospital Scientist at the Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney Australia. Dr Mihailidou engages in both biomedical and clinical research as Head of the Cardiovascular & Hormonal Research Laboratory at the Kolling Institute, and is an Honorary Associate Professor at Macquarie University.

Dr Mihailidou has an extensive contribution to service. She is the Vice-Chair of the ISH Communications Committee. Due to her expertise running the Diagnostic Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring Clinical Service, she is a member of the Advisory Board of the STRIDE_BP to standardize blood pressure measurement. Amongst many other service roles, Dr Mihailidou is also a member of the Lancet Commission on Cardiovascular Disease in Women.

Today we talk with Professor Thomas Unger, Emeritus Professor of Pharmacology and Experimental Medicine at CARIM Maastrich University, Netherlands. Prof Unger was the Scientific Director of the CARIM Maastrich University, the Director of the Institute of Pharmacology, and the Founding Director of the Centre for Cardiovascular Research at the Charite Institution in Berlin. At the International Society of Hypertension, Thomas chaired the ISH Guidelines Committee and chaired the Organizing Committee for the ISH Scientific Meeting in Beijing 2018; and currently is a member of ISH Council and chair of the Corporate Liaison Committee. Most important to us today, Thomas was a key figure in the creation of an innovative training network supported by the European Commission called MINDSHIFT, which is a European Joint Doctorate programme, combining scientific research with in-depth professional and transferable skill training.

Prof Ana Paula Dantas is a Research Scientist at the Division of Atherosclerosis and Coronary Disease at the Institute of Biomedical Investigations August Pi I Sunyer and the Clinical Cardiovascular Institute in Barcelona, and Adjunct Professor at the University of Barcelona, Spain. Ana is very active in editorial boards, act as a national and international reviewer for funding agencies, but most of all, Ana has been an ECR advocate in Spain and has mentored many.

Dr Hind Beheiry is a Professor at the Physiology Department at the International University of Africa, Sudan. Prof Beheiry is a former Dean of the Faculty of Nursing Sciences and former Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the International University of Africa. She has served as the president of the Sudanese Society of Hypertension and is part of the Sudan Branch of the Arab Economic Unity Council. At the International Society of Hypertension, Prof Beheiry is a member of the Women in Hypertension Research Committee.

Dr. Casarini was treasurer of the Brazilian Society of Hypertension during 2017-2019, is a member of the scientific council until 2022, and is an elected-member of the scientific committee of the Gordon Angiotensin Conference from 2018-2022. She has trained and mentored more than 100 students and post-doctoral fellows.
