355: Is It Just Bad Genes? (What Are The Causes Of Eczema + Psoriasis On Skin) w/ Dr. Ian Myles
Saison 1 · Épisode 355
jeudi 29 août 2024 • Durée 49:41
Do you have eczema or psoriasis because “you got bad genes”? Doctors often say these conditions are larely genetic—but is that really true?
In this episode, Dr. Ian Myles, head of the Epithelial Therapeutics Unit at the NIH, joins me to unpack why blaming genes oversimplifies what’s really going on on the skin. From environmental triggers and microbiome imbalances to nutrient deficiencies and chemical exposures—there’s far more at play than just your DNA.
We also explore how modern genetics may have misled how doctors approach treating chronic conditions which is detailed in his book Gattaca Has Fallen. If you’ve ever felt dismissed by the “it’s genetic” explanation, this one’s for you.

Topical zinc might be the missing piece in your skin rash toolkit—especially if you're dealing with eczema, psoriasis, or chronic skin rashes. Many people are deficient in zinc, and oral supplements often aren’t enough.

257: Itchiness + Histamine Intolerance - Why Am I Itchy?
Saison 1 · Épisode 257
jeudi 18 août 2022 • Durée 12:52
Most people assume that itchiness means there’s too much histamine in their bodies.
This assumption is often very wrong leading people to take anti-histamine medications that they will admit don’t help much.
If this hits home, you’ll be shocked to know that there are many different reasons (or hidden root causes) that can drive itch that often isn’t explored in conventional dermatology.
So if you’re frustrated that nothing seems to help that awful itch, you’re in the right place!
In this episode:- MYTH-BUSTING – itchiness + histamine intolerance
- Common meds + supplements used to stop itch
- What happens when these options don’t work?
- Different itch triggers (that have nothing to do with histamine)
- What about chronic hives + dermatographia?
If itchiness were solely triggered by histamine, then the medications and even potentially the supplements would help.
Itchiness is associated with higher levels of IL-31 in the body (especially in those with eczema, urticaria, and prurigo nodularis).

256: Understanding Your Skin's Circadian Rhythm w/ Michelle Jeffries, MD
Saison 1 · Épisode 256
jeudi 11 août 2022 • Durée 35:20
Did you know that your circadian rhythm affects your skin? Are you ready to find out what it means by your skin having its OWN circadian rhythm?
If you've wondered why your skin feels different at different times of the day (super itchy at night, but fine during the day), today's guest will explain why!
My guest today is Michelle Jeffries, D.O., FAAD, FAOCD. Dr. Michelle Jeffries is a board-certified Integrative Dermatologist in private practice in Phoenix, AZ and is the CEO and Founder of The SkinClock Method. She is a triple board-certified osteopathic physician in Dermatology, Pediatric Dermatology and Integrative Medicine. Dr. Jeffries also has a Masters degree in Psychology and is an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner. Her unique training and background has led her to a comprehensive "inside AND out" approach to skin health that blends the principles of holistic beauty with the natural health cycles of your body, universal laws of nature, ancient teachings, modern dermatology, functional nutrition, and spiritual consciousness for truly holistic skincare.
Join us as we discuss how clock genes work in alignment with your circadian rhythm and how that can affect skin health.
Have you dealt with poor sleep patterns and aligned your body's circadian rhythm to the betterment of your skin? Share with me in the comments!
In this episode:
- What exactly is your circadian rhythm?
- What are clock genes?
- Why your skin may be actually drier at night along with more itchiness
- Why is it important to align your clock genes within your body with the rhythm of the world?
- What ancient civilizations knew that modern tech and research are discovering
- Thoughts on blue light blockers and red light therapry
Quotes
“Shift workers who actually are awake at night and asleep during the day, they actually have different rhythms that they do throughout the day. And unfortunately they're more at risk for diabetes, heart disease and cancer, psoriasis, other things. So the research has shown when you're not aligning with those rhythms, a lot of the other systems in the body get out of sync.” [7:52]
“If we don't eat during active periods of the day and we're eating at night and we're eating when we're supposed to be resting, then that can just throw that whole gut clock out of lap, too. And then that will send mis-signals to the body because then the body has all these nutrients (to process).” [15:37]

254: Common Nutrient Deficiencies in Kids with Skin Rashes w/ Jennifer Brand MS, MPH, CNS
Saison 1 · Épisode 254
jeudi 28 juillet 2022 • Durée 37:40
Ever wonder how it could be possible for little kids to have low levels of nutrients?
Have you thought that they haven't really had “time” to lose nutrients, so they should be OK? We're learning more about this, and it's important to test before deciding on a plan of action. Improving micro AND macronutrients are important when rebuilding skin health!
My guest today is Jennifer Brand, MPH, MS, CNS. She is a clinical nutritionist and the CEO of Jennifer Caryn Brand Nutrition LLC. Jennifer helps children with dry, flaky, weepy, red, itchy, painful rashes navigate the journey to healthy skin and enjoy a childhood free from disruptive skin symptoms.
Instead of managing symptoms with more diet restrictions, environment changes, and prescription creams, Jennifer uses functional testing and a detailed health history to uncover unique imbalances at the heart of the problem and provides a roadmap to restore balance so that your child can eat more foods, feel good in their skin, regain normalcy, and be a child. Jennifer’s own struggle with gut problems and disordered eating made worse with elimination diets, and her father’s, brother’s, and mother’s struggles with psoriasis, eczema, and vitiligo left Jennifer frustrated. Conventional recommendations fell flat and didn’t help her, or her loved ones get relief from these health problems. These experiences inspired her to search for a different approach, one that addresses the root causes of health problems like these.
Jennifer has been a faculty member of LearnSkin, and her work has been featured in peer-reviewed scientific journals, Voyagela, as well as on podcasts, online summits, and in-person presentations at venues such as Casa Colina Hospital in California.
Join us as we discuss how low levels of certain nutrients may contribute to your kid's skin rashes.
Have you identified certain LOW or maybe even HIGH nutrient levels and it made a difference in your little one's skin health? Let me know in the comments!
- What nutrient imbalances are common with kids that have eczema
- How kids get so low in critical nutrients
- How to test for this and what can be done about this from a dietary perspective
- What role gut health plays in resolving skin rashes
- What you can do RIGHT NOW to start rebuilding healthy skin
“When it comes to the micronutrients, the ones that I'm seeing low levels of are vitamins A, C, E, alpha lipoic acid, CoQ10, glutathione, and plant-based antioxidants. Also B vitamins are commonly low in they're mineral imbalances and also high lipid peroxides. But really, the common thread that I see here with all of these micronutrient findings, is that they can be linked to antioxidant status and oxidative stress.” [4:48]
“Supplements are not benign. And all nutrients work together in the body, so if you supplement with individual ones and it's not necessary, it can throw off other ones and cause other problems. And so it's also why it's important to test and not guess and supplement where it's actually needed.” [16:09]

253: Eczema Expo 2022 Recap
Saison 1 · Épisode 253
jeudi 21 juillet 2022 • Durée 15:23
Did you know that there is a huge annual event just for people struggling with Eczema?
Yes!!! It’s called the Eczema Expo and the event is hosted by the National Eczema Association.
Due to my dad’s health declining and then the pandemic, I wasn’t able to attend in prior years, so this was my first time!
I wasn’t sure what to expect, but the entire experience really was incredible. Many of you asked for a recap to see if this might be a good event for you next year.
Just in case you’re wondering – my review of the event is not associated with the hosting organization or the event. I paid for all expenses to travel and attend the event and was not compensated (nor incentivized) to share this information.
It’s my hope that this will answer many of your questions about the event, so let’s dive in!
In this episode:- My experience attending the Eczema Expo for the first time
- Talk highlights from my favorite talks presented at Expo
- Activities + events that you can enjoy
- Experience with the hotel hosting Expo
- What I hope will improve next year
- Will I attend again? (drumroll, please)
“This event that frankly was very “you do you” without any requirement to show up to anything to allow you the freedom to come and go as you pleased.”
“It seemed impossible to feel alone because you were immersed in this beautiful, welcoming, supportive community.”

252: Heavy Metals + Skin Rashes: What You Need To Know w/ Dr. Sonza Curtis, ND, PA-C, IFMP
Saison 1 · Épisode 252
jeudi 14 juillet 2022 • Durée 31:36
Do you feel like the words “heavy metals” are getting a lot of buzz lately? It seems like it's hot topic that you read about on social media where everybody's like, “Maybe I do have mercury poisoning? Maybe I have lead poisoning?” My guest today is going to give you the lowdown on how heavy metals and other toxins affect gut health and what you can do about it.
Today's guest, Dr. Sonza Curtis, ND, PA-C, IFMP, has a doctorate in Naturopathy for Healthcare Professionals and was certified through the Institute of Functional Medicine. She completed her undergraduate and master of Physician Assistant Studies at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. She has additional advanced training and specializes in Gut, Autoimmune, and Hormone health.
Dr. Sonza has always been committed to helping people get better naturally and has many techniques built into her practice designed to help patients get back to health better than before they came through her doors. Her ability to listen carefully to her patients, along with the mix of western medicine and naturopathy, make her a top Functional Medicine doctor in the Atlanta metro area.
Join us as we discuss everything surrounding heavy metals.
Have you ever done heavy metal testing or tried a heavy metal detox? What worked or what did you learn? Tell me about it in the comments!
In this episode:- What are heavy metals specifically and how do they differ from minerals like zinc, sodium, or potassium
- What are the most common origins for heavy metal toxicity?
- Why heavy metal toxicity is higher in women during menopause
- Important things you should do before a heavy metal detox
- When to see a Functional Medicine Doctor
“We're full of metals, even as we're talking in the EMFs and different things of that nature, if a person is very sensitive sometimes they can't even take that… The two negatives repel. Sometimes even the conductivity in electronics can cause patients issues that can trigger, even intensify their heavy metals.” [7:30]
“If you're not pooping on a regular basis, guess what you're doing with that toxin? You're recirculating the toxins, and it's going to stay in there stronger. You have to make sure all the process of where you're detoxing is optimal before you start pushing things and trying to get it out.” [20:05]

- How Abby's standard of "what is beauty" has changed
“...It's not the fact that you have eczema and then you just put the thing (on) they give you and it goes away. It's this never-ending process of finding out what product works best for you and what truly kills a problem at the core.” [1:16]
“After the steroids, we were like, 'I can't be using cream anymore. There has to be another option.' So we went to the dermatologist and they're like, 'All right, we have this thing called Dupixent,' and listed, gave the whole rundown of it all. And I was like, I'm so desperate, I do not care what I need to do. So I gave it a shot, and it's the only thing that has worked for me so far.” [14:04]

251: Why You Should Balance Iron + Copper w/ Amanda Montalvo, RD
Saison 1 · Épisode 251
jeudi 30 juin 2022 • Durée 35:25
Many of our readers and listeners have heard me talk about the zinc and copper relationship. Have you delved into how copper is involved yet? My guest today shares everything from the importance of minerals to how the iron recycling system works.
Today's guest, Amanda Montalvo, RD, is a women’s health dietitian that helps women get to the root cause of hormone imbalances and have healthy menstrual cycles. Amanda started off her education in nutrition with the traditional route, but after dealing with her own health problems after getting off hormonal birth control she quickly realized the value of functional medicine. After healing her acne, balancing her hormones, and learning the value of her menstrual cycle, Amanda found her purpose—to help women create a body in balance and not settle for anything less.Join us as we discuss minerals and WHY so many get iron wrong.
Have you been told you're anemic and want to look into your copper or Vitamin A status? Tell me about it in the comments! In this episode:- How mineral imbalances affect the whole body
- How do copper and Vitamin A regulate iron?
- Organ meats- should you supplement?
- Beta-carotene versus retinol
- Opinions on utilizing hair mineral testing to see the overall picture of stress and mineral levels
- Different labs to ask your doctor for
“Iron is in our tissues. We need to get it into the blood. How do we do that? We have different proteins that are moving it around, but those proteins need enzymes. Those enzymes are just making a reaction happen and that's where the minerals come in, right? Minerals are spark plugs for reactions in the body for enzymes.” [6:56]
“As estrogen goes up, hepcidin will also increase, and then that means we have less iron absorption in the gut. So, you can look anemic when you have high estrogen, but in reality, you're actually storing a lot of iron. So, hormones can definitely impact our iron status as well." [20:06]
