#319: Pump or Pen: Which One Actually Gives You More Freedom
In today's episode, I break down one of the biggest debates in Type 1 diabetes: Insulin Pump vs. MDI. But instead of comparing the features, tech, and tools — I flip the discussion completely. Because it’s not really about which method is better — it's about which one supports your personality, your lifestyle, your mental bandwidth, your confidence, and your understanding of insulin.
I explore why some people thrive on a pump and others feel more confident with injections, why technology can sometimes increase mental load instead of reducing it, and most importantly: why no device can fix diabetes without strategy, awareness, and ownership.
This episode is an empowering, reflective coaching-style breakdown that will help you make a decision based not just on tech — but on who you are.
🔑 Key Takeaways
Why choosing between MDI and pump has more to do with self-awareness than features.
Technology does not reduce decision-making — it only changes it.
Pumps don’t give you control — you create control with understanding, not devices.
Why starting on MDI often builds stronger decision-making skills.
When pump switching is motivated by FOMO, burnout, or false expectations.
Why doctors talk about technology, but don’t teach you mindset, ownership, or insulin strategy.
The most important question to ask: 👉 Does this tool support my confidence — or steal it?
You can make either method work — if you understand your insulin, mindset, habits, and needs.

In today's episode, I got to sit down with Arnie Bunch, a T1D Father and endurance enthusiast. Typically, when I have a Diabetic on this show, we talk about their Diabetes journey, challenges, and how they overcome those challenges. Arnie and I discussed endurance training, his upcoming marathon, LOW CARB, or our thoughts about low carb. This was a great discussion about low carb in the shape of a perfect disagreement. I am so excited for you to listen to this one!

Brian was diagnosed with Type 1 at age 21. Despite the suddenness of his diagnosis and lack of education about managing Type 1, he was determined to not let diabetes hold him back.
Brian has always prioritized health and fitness, which meant managing blood sugars was a bit of an adjustment. After a few years of figuring out diabetes, Brian wanted to prove he could do something he thought was impossible, run a 50-miler.
In December of 2023, despite extreme temperatures and humidity, Brian attempted to run around the island of Aruba (52 miles). His experience was a roller coaster to say the least, but it’s an experience he’ll never forget.

In today's episode I got to sit down with Mila Hennigan and her Mother Cindy Hennigan. Mila was diagnosed with T1D in January of 2023. I had Mila's mother Cindy on the show back in episode #156 where we heard all about Mila's diagnosis and the families struggles to figure out what works for Mila while still allowing her to live as a young girl. I thought it only fitting to hear Mila's story from her own words!

In this solo episode,I dive deep into one of the most debated topics in diabetes care: A1C versus Time in Range—and why both still fall short without focusing on what I call DiabetesStability.
I shares my perspective on why A1C alone doesn’t tell the whole story, how time in range can (and should) be customized to your needs, and why identifying your personal target number instead of target range matters more than just hitting Time In Range. Most importantly, I explain how living in alignment with the Five Pillars of Diabetes Success—mental health, strategic dosing, consistency & routines, nutrition, and physical well-being—creates long-term stability and reduces the burden of diabetes burnout.
This episode is packed with practical insights and encouragement for anyone striving to feel more confident and in control of their diabetes.
🔑 Key Takeaways
Why A1C alone doesn’t reflect the realities of life with T1D.
The benefits—and limits—of using time in range as your primary metric.
How to define your personal target range and target number.
The importance of avoiding perfectionism and preventing burnout.
How the Five Pillars of Diabetes Success create true stability.
Why your belief in your own capacity matters more than anyone else’s opinion.
I’m Coach Ken Kniss, founder of Simplifying Life With Diabetes and host of The Healthy Diabetic Podcast. I help people living with T1D cut through the overwhelm, confusion, fear, and distrust in their daily decisions, so they can feel confident and live without consistently worrying about lows, their body image, or long term complications.

Dr. Sarah Townley is a double board-certified clinical pharmacist who left the clinical setting to offer a different way of thinking about your health. Sarah offers one-to-one coaching for those who want to reverse type 2 diabetes and get off their diabetes medications by addressing the root cause of the problem. This was such a fascinating and profound episode with Dr. Townley. To have a doctor who decided that the protocols and principles that are set in place aren't good enough to have her leave that world to practice in her own way is nothing more than inspiring.

Carolyn was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 13 and is the founder of Sugarmedical, a diabetes accessory company. Early on, she identified a need for something more attractive than "the black medical bag" that comes with every glucometer. In 2009, Carolyn started designing cases from her basement with her two sons. A year later, she launched Sugar Medical and introduced her first supply case in 5 colors!
Today, Sugar Medical is one of the largest diabetic accessory companies in the country and is proudly still woman-owned. They specialize in supply cases, purses, backpacks, travel bags, and accessories available worldwide. They've created over 100 fashionable designs and will continue designing new and exciting products that are durable and practical for daily life with diabetes.

In today's episode, I got to sit down with Jordan Hostetler, a Functional Registered Dietitian who focuses on full body healing while getting to the root of your symptoms!
After earning her Bachelor's Degree, completing her 10-month Dietetic internship, and passing her board-certified registered dietitian exam, she worked as a clinical dietitian for five years in a long-term care facility.
After seeing how clinical nutrition worked and how food and lifestyle affected these patients and their health, Jordan knew it was time to switch to preventive medicine and help individuals understand how their food & lifestyle choices work together in healing the mind, body, and soul!
After 13 months of extensive training and education in evidence-based functional nutrition lab testing, she decided to take her career further by creating Blissfully Balanced Nutrition. In her practice, she sees a range of clients anywhere from chronic fatigue, autoimmune diseases, blood sugar dysfunction, hormone imbalances, GI issues, etc.
