September 26, 2024: Last year second year head coach, Kevin Willard, and the Terrapins had a season they'd like to forget. Despite bringing back some key veterans and picking up highly rate recruits, the team took a turn for the worse last year. Nearly elite defense was negated by an abysmal offensive presence especially outside the 3 point line. 

In only his third year, Willard certainly isn't on the hot seat but another disappointing year at a school that cares about basketball might make next year a bit toasty under his derrierre. As with most teams in the conference, there is a lot of uncertainty with the team's roster as transfers will have to make up what was lost in starters last year.

September 23, 2024: The third PAC-12 team we have previewed is the Oregon Ducks as they shift to a deeper basketball league that they are used to. Oregon has had a tradition of boom and bust teams and with the close relationship with Phil Knight and Nike, there is every reason to believe Oregon will be competitive.

This year's team features some intriguing transfers along with a few valuable holdover pieces. As is the case with virtually every team in the Big Ten this year, there is a lot of uncertainty on how the pieces will come together. We believe Oregon will be a Tournament team this year with the possibility of having a very good finish if things turn right for them.

August 20, 2024: Michigan State left for Spain for an exhibition basketball tour. College teams are only allowed to do this every 4 years or so but it had been 9 years for MSU since their last overseas trip. Coach Izzo felt it was time with a new point guard and five new players on the roster.

The Spartans opened up play with a close victory over the Madrid All-Stars on Thursday followed by a blowout win over the Valencia All-Stars on Sunday. The all-star teams are composed of various pro and semi-pro basketball players in the Spanish leagues. It is important to note that the composition of the teams are not the same from game to game making it hard to assess the level of competition each game and comparing results to other teams that might have played the same teams.

Despite the exhibition nature of the games we learned quite a bit about the players - more so even than what we could glean during Moneyball this summer.

November 14, 2023: Michigan State faced off against the Duke Blue Devils in the Champions Classic tonight and lost 74-65. Neither team looked like it was playing crisply and struggled in the first ten minutes of the game to score. Duke largely couldn't get a shot up because of turnovers caused by MSU and Michigan State couldn't make open jumpers.

By the end of the first half, Duke started to pull away by hitting a few shots and getting Malik Hall in foul trouble since he was doing the majority of the damage for the Spartans. In the second half, MSU finally started to find the bottom of the net as they hit 4-6 three pointers and shot nearly 60% from the field. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough as Duke hit just enough 3s and free throws to stay one to three possessions up on MSU. Clearly, despite the loss, the Spartans showed glimmers of the team we think they can be this year.

November 11, 2023: Michigan State has competed in the early season Champions Classic with Kansas, Kentucky, and Duke for so long it almost feels as if it has been going forever. The round robin matchup has been around since 2011 and will once again be a great measuring stick for these Spartans. 

This year, MSU gets a talented Duke team who is coming off a 5 point loss to Arizona at home. Similar to last year where the Spartans faced national player of the year candidate, Oscar Tshiebwe, they get to face another in Kyle Filipowski. Filipowski is a 6'11" sophomore hitting over 50% from 3 and figures to be a huge challenge for MSU's defense.

In an early matchup with plenty of story lines, one big one for MSU is their futility behind the arc. Their 2-31 shooting has been epically bad and needs to improve if they have any hope of competing with the Blue Devils. Also, Michigan State needs to avoid another slow and lackluster start or they may find no way to climb out the hole to compete.

November 9, 2023: Michigan State exorcised a few demons Thursday night by beating Southern Indiana 74-51. The Spartans outscored the Screaming Eagles 37-14 in the first half with some suffocating defense. Unfortunately, the defense largely disappeared in the second half.

MSU continues to get very spotty performance from its senior point guard, AJ Hoggard, which has led to erratic play and a general lack of smoothness on both sides of the floor. With Duke coming up in a few days, MSU will need its veterans to play their best to keep that game competitive.

November 8, 2023: If there was ever a time to get back on the court and cleanse your mouth it's the Spartans. After an historically poor shooting performance in the home opener against James Madison, MSU looks to get back on track before the Champions Classic next week.

Although the USI Screaming Eagles should be easier competition for the Spartans, this game could be a check for how the upperclassman plan on playing this year. The team has now had back to back games with a lack of focus and intensity costing them two wins (of course, the first was and exhibition against Tennessee and didn't count.) Can Izzo get this team turned around before they head into the meat of the nonconference schedule?

November 7, 2023: In what has to be one of the most inexplicable opening nights in MSU basketball history, #4 MSU lost 79-76 to James Madison. They did this behind 1-20 3 point shooting, 23-37 FT shooting, and getting outrebounded by a very talented mid major program.

The game highlighted the Spartans' recent lack of focus and intensity at the starts of game. Their lackadaisical effort was on full display as James Madison came out quick and physical and never let Michigan State get comfortable. All MSU can do now is hope to learn from their poor effort and correct those mistakes as they head further into the season.

November 3, 2023: A lot like Christmas morning, Monday is the official start to the college basketball season in what we hope will be a very special and fun year for MSU hoops. The Dukes from James Madison, however, won't be a pushover. They won their conference last year (but lost in the conference tourney) and are favored to again this year. JMU ranks in the top 150 on KenPom which puts them above Minnesota.

Featured player, Terrence Edwards will be the player to watch for on James Madison. Edwards is a projected first team conference player and at 6'7" he could give MSU some fits playing at the wing with that size and skill. This should be a great test and warmup for the Spartans as they prepare for their matchup a week later against Duke in the Champions Classic.

October 29, 2023: Well, if you attended the game or watched it on TV, you would be excused for not realizing that the 89-88 last second loss to Tennessee at the Breslin wasn't a regular season game. Aside from the first 6 minutes of the game where the Vols leapt out to a 17-1 lead, the game felt every bit like the even and hard nosed game we anticipated.

Although, there was no disqualification from 5 fouls, the game otherwise felt like any other game except that it was two extremely physical and skilled teams. The Spartans never led the game but pushed Tennessee throughout and tied it with under 5 seconds on a 3 from AJ Hoggard. Unfortunately, a foul was soon called on Tre Holloman leading to the Vols splitting a pair of free throws to win the game by one.

October 27, 2023: Michigan State will host head coach Rick Barnes and top ten Tennessee in a final exhibition warmup to the Breslin Sunday afternoon. It was going to be a closed scrimmage like last year's in Knoxville, but the devastation that occurred in Maui moved both teams to open the game up as a fund raising opportunity.

The game will be televised on BTN and we expect to see two teams with legitimate chances to make the Final Four face off. Like the Spartans, Tennessee is a veteran team that specializes in toughness, defense, and  rebounding which should be a good test of where MSU is to start the season. We will be especially watching MSU's rebounding to see if Hillsdale's offensive rebounding was just a blip or an alarm bell.

October 25, 2023: Michigan State opened its season on a rainy night in East Lansing by hosting D2 Hillsdale in an exhibition matchup. The game went much as you'd hope for Spartan fans as MSU cruised to an easy win. Of note, the team looked a lot different in their style of play and the freshmen came in and looked further along than freshmen usually do at the beginning of the season.

Although it is just a warmup before the real games begin, MSU showed some relentless defense and full court pressure. Perhaps of even more importance was the tenacious ball pressure and connected switching in the half court which stymied Hillsdale from getting any sort of offensive flow.

It's easy to get carried away in an exhibition game against a D2 opponent but Michigan State looked further along in their cohesion than they usually do at this time of the year. Part of that certainly has to do with the experience and familiarity of the seniors. However, we think a lot has to do with the real quality depth that was added to the team with the freshmen class.

October 23, 2023: Michigan State has two warm-up games before its season opener in early November. The first of which is this Wednesday as they host the D2 Chargers from Hillsdale College. Although a small school, Hillsdale is an accomplished basketball program which has played in the D2 NCAA tournament 3 years in a row and the Elite 8 two years ago.

Of interest to Spartan fans is not only how the new players incorporate with the veterans, but what is the style of play we can expect for the season? An open scrimmage this weekend gave the impression that MSU is going to play a lot faster and press full court.

Also of note, MSU Sophomore center Jaxon Kohler developed a stress reaction in his foot and had surgery this week. He is expected to miss a few months and the team is hoping to get him back before Christmas.

October 19, 2023: Prior to last season, Michigan State had two straight disappointing years (by program standards) with teams that had early exits in the NCAA and not in contention for Big Ten titles. However, last year finished better with a Sweet Sixteen berth and almost an elite eight appearance. The season might have ended with a thrilling and heartbreaking OT loss to Kansas St. but it gave all Spartan fans reasons for optimism heading into 2023.

There are a lot of reasons for that optimism. First, the seasons obviously ended on an up note with a semi-deep run in the NCAA tourney. Second, almost the entire roster from last year is returning aside from Joey Hauser. Finally, MSU is adding a top 5 recruiting class that highlights two McDonald All-Americans and a freak athlete.

Last year the Spartans were not a typical MSU team. They played at a snail's pace, couldn't offensive rebound, and rarely scored (or tried) in transition. We expect all those factors to be reversed this season with improved quality of depth, experience, and athleticism. It isn't hard to see all sorts of reasons why this team might be very special.

Octboer 17, 2023: Purdue fans must be struggling to properly define last season's team. Was it a successful one where they ran away with the Big Ten conference championship, won the Big Ten Tournament, secured a number one seed in the NCAA, and had a national player of the year in Zach Edey? Or was the year a failure where despite their #1 seed they failed to get out of the first round losing to an historically bad #16 seed in Fairleigh Dickinson?

Despite Matt Painter's success during the regular season, his squads have been very poor in the postseason NCAA tournament. Not only is he only the second coach to lose in the first round as a #1 seed, but they have been eliminated by double digit seeds the last three year. Also, he has never made it to a final four.

The question heading into this season with an almost intact roster from last year has to be whether or not the Boilers can repeat and achieve redemption. Can they do what Virginia did after losing its first round game and go on to win the NCAA tournament? Or will there be too much pressure to live up to the expectations?

October 16, 2023: 4* combo guard Jase Richardson committed to MSU yesterday adding to an already impressive 2024 recruiting class for Tom Izzo and the Spartans. Long time Michigan State fans will recognize the Richardson last name because Jase's father is former national champion and long time NBA player, Jason Richardson.

Although Jase lacks some of the attributes of his father, namely his height and insane athleticism, he comes with a lot to like. Richardson features a nice handle, good looking shot, plus athleticism, and knack for rebounding as a 6'2" guard. With the likely departures next year in MSU's back court we expect he will make an impact as a freshman.

October 12, 2023: It's hard to describe the Ohio State Buckeyes' season last year as anything but an unmitigated disaster. A horrendous 13th place finish in the Big Ten, a defensive rating in the 200s, and nowhere near sniffing an NCAA bid. Our questions about Chris Holtman and whether he can take the next step haven't changed.

The biggest liability for the Buckeyes has been defense where they struggle individually and as a team. Interestingly, that was a perceived strength of Holtman at his previous job at Butler. This year's squad looks on paper to have a lot more ability and history of playing defense so there is every reason to believe that Ohio State will figure it out this year. Unless they don't.

October 9, 2023: Throughout the 2000s, Wisconsin was the epitome of consistency. The Badgers were always in the thick of things in the conference and aside from Michigan State, was probably the best team year in and year out. They racked up a lot of conference titles and NCAA tournament appearances over those 20 years.

However, under the leadership of Greg Gard, Wisconsin has been just a touch less competitive. They missed the NCAA last year and were more vulnerable at home. They hope to turn things around this season returning almost the entire roster, staying healthy, and bringing in a dynamic transfer, AJ Storr, from St. Johns. Whether this will be the right recipe for the Badgers or not could certainly help determine the long term future of Gard.

October 5, 2023: After a year in the wilderness with the abrupt midseason departure of former head coach, Mark Turgeon, the Terrapins returned again to prominence in the Big Ten last year. They did it with transfer point guard Jahmir Young under new head coach Kevin Willard from Seton Hall. Maryland made its hay at home last year in the Big Ten but struggled on the road despite being a fairly sound team on both ends of the court.

This year, Maryland returns most of its players and adds some top level recruits suggesting that a high NCAA tournament bid is likely in their future. Whether there is enough horsepower to challenge Purdue and Michigan State for the conference title is still in doubt. The fastest way to turn things around for the best would be if the Terrapins could start hitting from outside as they were a dreadful 32.8% last season(#238 in the country).

October 2, 2023: The Indiana Hoosiers are considered one of the Blue Bloods of college basketball yet their program hasn't been at asustained elite level since Bobby Knight was head coach. That's a long time and Rod Woodson was brought in to reconstruct this languishing basketball program and put it on good footing for the next coach - whomever that is going to be. 

However, despite Indiana's modest success last year in the regular season, they failed to win the league despite being the consensus pick. Also, they swept their rival at Purdue yet weren't even close to winning the Big Ten. They also flamed out early in the NCAA tournament failing yet again to make the second weekend. A trend that has persisted far too long in basketball crazy Indiana. This year's team look to be above average but probably not on the same level as the tops of the Big Ten.

September 28, 2023: They say there are a few things you can count on in this world: death, taxes, Iowa not playing defense, and now Illinois not having a point guard is on that list. Once again, the Illini are without a point guard as they have been unable to recruit a capable guard for the job or find one in the transfer portal.

Perhaps it's just really bad luck or maybe something else is going on. For Illinois fans, it's some tough luck because they have all sorts of talent in the low post and wings which should translate into a very tough basketball team. But for the second year in a row, Illinois finds itself sorely lacking at the point which will probably limit how far this team can go this year.

September 25, 2023: The Iowa Hawkeyes enter the 2023-24 season much as they have for the past few - with questions. However, to Head Coach Fran McCaffrey's credit, Iowa has overcome their apparent deficiencies to easily make the NCAA tournament. Two years ago, after losing a great player in Luka Garza, they found another great set of players in the Murray twins.

Well, Keegan and now Kris Murray are gone and in the NBA and Fran will once again try to reload with underrecruited players and a few transfers. It is hard to discount the Hawkeyes at this point so despite the apparent lack of parts, we will assume they have what it takes to sneak back into the NCAA tournament.

September 21, 2023: Although basketball is a distant second in terms of importance to Michigan fans, there is still a good tradition of winning. However, Juwan Howard and the Wolverines seem to be slowly spiraling the drain. They enter the 2023-24 season after what can only be described as a disappointing season where they not only missed the NCAA tournament but lost in the NIT first round in a heart crushing fashion to Vanderbilt.

The program feels like it is lost with strange roster construction and an inability to recruit to the level hoped for when Howard was hired. The Wolverines have struggled to recruit a point guard they trust going to the portal year after year. 

Worse yet, the team that never could get over the hump last year will enter this season without two first round NBA draft picks (Jett Howard and Coby Bufkin) and the consensus number one transfer portal player, Hunter Dickinson. It's hard to envision that this team is going anywhere in the near future except on a slow circling of the drain. Perhaps they squeeze into the NCAA this year but going forward the future doesn't look rosy.

August 8, 2024: We met with incoming Freshman Jase Richardson and talked to him about his experience so far at MSU. He discussed his recruitment with Tom Izzo and described how it was different than other coaches.

Finally, Jase is probably most famous with fans because he is the son of former MSU & NBA great, Jason Richardson. Richardson is probably best remembered for his insane leaping and athleticism and lots and lots of dunks. September 18, 2023: Rutgers has quietly become a serious pest and threat to teams in the Big Ten. After spending years as the league doormat, the Scarlet Knights are not only a legitimate challenge each night but have become somewhat of a regular in the NCAA tournament. Steve Pikiell has done a masterful job in creating a real program at a university with virtually no basketball tradition.

However, last year was bit of a weird year for the Knights as they looked assured to make the field of 68 when all of a sudden, the wheels came off as they dropped 6 of their last eight games. Worse yet, one of those was to Minnesota who had a KenPom profile of a middling team in the SWAC. 

Next year, Rutgers is poised to potentially get 2 of the top 5 high school recruits in the nation. This year, it might really struggle to recover and make it back into the NCAAs. The departures of Cam Spencer and Paul Mulcahy really put Pikiell and his team in a tough spot. They will have to hope that they can bring in enough scoring to overcome the loss of their two seasoned guards.

September 14, 2023: Although Purdue and its steamrolling through the Big Ten last year was the main headline - Northwestern may have had an even better season (at least compared to expectations). Chris Collins' crew found 'it' last year and rocketed up to the top of the conference mainly through a tenacious defense.

Collins was perhaps a little bit on the hot seat, but after a second NCAA tournament berth (the second ever in the history of Northwestern) and a first round win, we expect he's safe in Evanston for a while. However, Chase Audige elected to go pro instead of take his COVID year leaving a lot of questions still for the 'Cats heading into the year. 

Northwestern has added some pieces from transfers but like the other teams we have discussed to this point, we will just have to wait and see how they pan out. The one nice thing that the 'Cats have going for them is the return of Boo Bouie who should provide a good foundation for success.

September 11, 2023: Fred Hoiberg and the Cornhuskers had a moderately successful season last year. They nearly finished .500 in league play and went 6-2 down the home stretch largely behind the emergence of Keisei Tominaga and his infectious personality and deadliness from behind the arc. Last year, Nebraska was finally not awful on the defensive end of the ball or on the boards.

The question coming into this year is an obvious one: was the end of last year a fluke or will it be a foundation for new success going forward? Certainly, if Keisei Tominaga can have a repeat of the shooting performance he put on last year this Nebraska team will at a minimum be a threat to knock you off if you're off your game. 

But just like the other two previews we've done so far, this team's success will depend in large part on whether the midmajor transfers can deliver. The ones the 'huskers are depending on are Rienk Mast from Bradley and Brice Williams from Charlotte. Whether a successful season is a necessity for Fred Hoiberg to avoid the hot seat in Lincoln is unclear. However, it is probably safe to say that a poor performance again this year might spell the beginning of the end for his reign.

September 10, 2023: Well, MSU fans who went to bed Saturday night feeling pretty good about their football team awoke Sunday to some very sobering news. It turns out that Head coach Mel Tucker, is the subject of a serious Title IX investigation alleging sexual misconduct with a former off campus individual. His coaching future with Michigan State is probably over as we await the next steps within the program and athletic department.

However, whenever anything happens within athletics at MSU, it seems Tom Izzo becomes a part of the discussion. Partly because there is such a huge power vacuum at the university and partly because he cares so deeply from the school. In this episode we have a brief discussion over what, if any, impact this will have on the basketball program and season this year.

September 7, 2023: In perhaps the most surprising season in the Big Ten (outside of Purdue winning and then face planting in the NCAA tourney), the Penn State Nittany Lions did what few thought possible. Micah Shrewsberry cobbled together a team of veterans, grad transfers, and portal additions without any size and managed to get a .500 record and NCAA tourney berth. 

Not only did PSU make the NCAA and win a game, they almost knocked out a really tough Texas team to make the Sweet 16. However, the most shocking thing about the Lions was that they have to be the most unconventional Big Ten team in recent memory usually playing 5 guards and no one over 6' 5". Despite the size limitations on the team, Penn State managed to be competitive and just pesky enough to defeat a lot of teams who looked much better than them on paper.

But then forces that were working in the background (or not working) as Penn State's successful coach - a real diamond in the rough for this sorry basketball program - and let him slip away. Clearly, the administration at Penn State never saw the real value in Shrewberry (and basketball in general) and were way too late in providing any overtures to keep him from leaving Happy Valley.

So now Shrewsberry is at Notre Dame and Penn State's roster has been reduced to rubble. They only have 3 remaining players on the roster - none of whom played much last year - and ten new bodies as the new coach, Mike Rhodes, tries to bring his success in the A-10 at VCU to the Big Ten. Much like Minnesota, Penn State is filled with more questions than answers this year.

September 4, 2023: Head coach Ben Johnson and the Minnesota Gophers are coming off of a statistically historically poor season. Out of 351 division-1 teams, the Gophers rated 235 in KenPom which was easily the worst in Big Ten. This is following a relatively successful year for a team that was cobbled together by Johnson with mostly transfers.

Unfortunately for the Gophers, their weak roster was plagued by injuries to their star players - Dawson Garcia and Jameson Battle. The mild magic that occurred the year before (although Minnesota still didn't win a lot of conference games) was now gone and they only managed two wins in the league.

Toughest yet is that Johnson and the Gophers continue to struggle to keep Minnesota talent from escaping the state and heading to other programs. Michigan State got Tre Holloman, Duke got Paulo Banchero, and the list goes on. So this year Minnesota is again faced with a challenging roster that has some unknown potential. Unfortunately for them, they will be without Jameson Battle and Ta'lon Cooper who have transferred out.

September 1, 2023: MSU finally released it's non conference schedule and it has a few surprises. First, there is no true road game which is very unusual for Tom Izzo. He usually likes to challenge his team at least once in a hostile environment before the Big Ten season really gets under way.

Second, the schedule is much more manageable this year without games sandwiched between crazy travel schedules. Unlike last year where MSU logged thousands of miles in the air and moved multiple time zones before playing at Notre Dame, this year doesn't look to have any of those difficulties.

Finally, 1979 national champion opponent, the Indiana State Sycamores, visit the Breslin in their first matchup since the title game over 40 years ago. It will certainly be an interesting matchup and one that is sure to get a lot of media attention.

August 23, 2023: Tom Izzo and Spartans are already off to a great start in solidifying their next class of high school recruits for the 2024 class. They have already received commitments from talented 6'5" dead eye shooting Kur Teng and 6'11" big man Jesse McCulloch who we would assume makes up half of the planned class for 2024.

To round out the class, MSU is seriously working on landing 6'3" combo guard Jase Richardson (son of Spartan and NBA great, Jason Richardson), 6'6" phenom guard  Bryson Tucker, and 6'11" Aidan Sherrell. It looks like Michigan State is seriously in the running for the first two with a good chance at securing one if not both. 

As for 2025, MSU has a whole lot of targets they have shown interest in, made offers, and begun official and unofficial visits to campus. In fact, there are 15 to date who we have identified as targets for the green and white.

August 16, 2023: 6' 2" sophomore point guard Tre Holloman had a very solid freshman year playing nearly 9 minutes a game as a backup to AJ Hoggard. He was solid defensively and good protecting the ball with nearly a 2.5:1 assist to turnover ratio. Not relied upon to score last year, almost certainly we can expect to see him contribute more on the offensive side of the ball this year.

Tre has been working on his shot and handle over the off season and those who went to Moneyball saw his improved confidence and three point shot. With the addition of Jeremy Fears as a another point guard there is a good chance that we will see Tre playing backup as both a one and two. Holloman also gave us his impression of Izzo showing up at his football practices in high school and comparing Minneapolis to East Lansing.

August 9, 2023: 6'5" freshman wing Gehrig Normand joins us again to discuss his first impressions at Michigan State. Our sit down went down a number of avenues from what he thinks of East Lansing (in the summer), Moneyball, his freshmen teammates, and coach Izzo.

When we asked him what he thought of the yelling from Izzo and the staff he simply shrugged it off and said it showed they actually care. August 7, 2023: The Big Ten was at it again last week as it continues to metastasize across America. After poaching UCLA and USC last year, the Big Ten added Oregon and Washington to its prizes. With 18 member schools spanning both coasts, the Big Ten is changing the nature of its athletic competition and even scheduling the regular season - not to mention the postseason - will be complicated.

Any semblance of a regular season champion will probably have to be dispelled once the additional 4 teams join play. The massively unbalanced schedule will make it almost impossible to feel like you have a definitive 'best team' during conference play. Ultimately, how the recent additions affect MSU is probably not severely as the Big Ten did not add any behemoths to the basketball court.

August 2, 2023: MSU sophomore big man Carson Cooper joined us to talk about his strange and sudden recruitment to Michigan State, last season, the off season, and what he expects coming into the year. Carson talked to us about how he and the other centers have transformed their bodies in the off season and what practices are like with the freshmen. Not only has Cooper been working on his upper body in strength training but his overall game including running the floor.

Carson said he expects that the teams this year will be doing a whole lot more running and be improved on the offensive glass. But will he have a green light to shoot 3s?

July 26, 2023: Lansing's annual pro-am basketball tournament that features Michigan State's roster, Moneyball, is happening again this year. This year's free to the public event at Holt High School allows for all Spartan fans an opportunity to get an early glimpse of the incoming freshmen and a peek at how last year's players are progressing.

As always, defense is optional at Moneyball so there's only so much that you can take away from the tournament. Many remember the summer that Tum Tum Nairn torched the nets from 3 only to struggle to score the following year during the regular season. So evaluations are best taken with a big grain of salt.

However, there are things that can be discerned from what we see. We can evaluate the body conditioning of players, their ability to shoot (when wide open), athleticism, and their health. Oh, and can they dunk?

On all those counts, MSU looks ready for next year and returning veterans will be joined by some very talented Freshmen including two McDonald's All-Americans, freak athlete Coen Carr, and sharpshooter Gehrig Normand. The last two put on a show with Normand hitting 3s and Carr putting down unbelievable dunk after unbelievable dunk. It's only Moneyball but the future certainly looks bright for this squad.

July 19, 2023: Famous MSU walk-on to starter, Tim Bograkos joined us to talk about what it was like playing for Coach Izzo back in the early 2000s. Tim became such an iconic player in Izzo's early career that the annual walk-on honor for MSU is named the Bograkos award.

Bograkos is probably most famous for hitting the game winning 3 point shot against Kentucky in Rupp Arena where Izzo quipped he was "the sixth option on the floor" at the time. Although he was never a prolific scorer, Bograkos represented what it meant to be a Spartan; unbridled energy and grit, intense defender, and relentless after loose balls and rebounds. he epitomized the OKG (our kind of guy) profile for MSU basketball and also showed how Izzo gave everyone opportunities to make impacts during the game no matter where you began your recruiting journey.

Jun 19, 2023: Mady Sissoko joined us again on the show and this time to discuss all that he has accomplished on and off the court since our last time visiting back in February. Not only did MSU make the Sweet 16, but Mady's charitable organization, the Mady Sissoko Foundation (https://www.madysissokofoundation.org) managed to build a school, medical clinic, and install a new well in his home town in Mali. Now, instead of walking 90 minutes each way to get to school, the kids in his village can get an education without having to sacrifice helping their families in farming.

We then talked about his impressions of the incoming freshmen and how the team will be different than last year's squad. Not surprisingly, with the increased depth he expects them to play a lot more in transition and hit the offensive glass a lot harder than the last few years.

July 25, 2024: In a bit of a surprise move, Tom Izzo and the Spartans brought in 6' 11" grad transfer Szymon Zapala in after the departure of Mady Sissoko. In a transfer portal move that few knew was happening until the deal was pretty much done, Zapala brings his skills from Longwood University to East Lansing.

The Polish native offers an intriguing skill set and options for Michigan State next year. Aside from the obvious depth at the 5, Szymon has the ability to step out and hit outside shots and a fairly developed post game. Our conversation also elicited that he is a fan of the Gortat screen which is sort of a semi-illegal screen involving wiping out the big who makes the switch on a traditional pick and roll screen.

May 31, 2023: On the cusp of the deadline to withdraw from the NBA draft and maintain your eligibility, MSU guards Jaden Akins and AJ Hoggard both announced they will return for the 2023-24 MSU Spartans season. Their return brings a lot of experience, talent, production, and potential upside assuming Akins plays the entire year without injury. Coupling their return with Hall and Walker taking their COVID years and a top 6 recruiting class, and Michigan State is set for very successful year.

The biggest questions with the return of the two players is how are the minutes going to get delegated? We are unlikely to see 35+ minutes from any of the starters as we did last year. Also, it seems to go without mention that it should look like a more typical MSU team with a faster pace and a reemphasis towards running and rebounding. At this way too early to know time of the preseason it is reasonable to think just about anything is on the table for expectations with this team.
