September 26, 2024: Last year second year head coach, Kevin Willard, and the Terrapins had a season they'd like to forget. Despite bringing back some key veterans and picking up highly rate recruits, the team took a turn for the worse last year. Nearly elite defense was negated by an abysmal offensive presence especially outside the 3 point line. 

In only his third year, Willard certainly isn't on the hot seat but another disappointing year at a school that cares about basketball might make next year a bit toasty under his derrierre. As with most teams in the conference, there is a lot of uncertainty with the team's roster as transfers will have to make up what was lost in starters last year.

September 23, 2024: The third PAC-12 team we have previewed is the Oregon Ducks as they shift to a deeper basketball league that they are used to. Oregon has had a tradition of boom and bust teams and with the close relationship with Phil Knight and Nike, there is every reason to believe Oregon will be competitive.

This year's team features some intriguing transfers along with a few valuable holdover pieces. As is the case with virtually every team in the Big Ten this year, there is a lot of uncertainty on how the pieces will come together. We believe Oregon will be a Tournament team this year with the possibility of having a very good finish if things turn right for them.

August 20, 2024: Michigan State left for Spain for an exhibition basketball tour. College teams are only allowed to do this every 4 years or so but it had been 9 years for MSU since their last overseas trip. Coach Izzo felt it was time with a new point guard and five new players on the roster.

The Spartans opened up play with a close victory over the Madrid All-Stars on Thursday followed by a blowout win over the Valencia All-Stars on Sunday. The all-star teams are composed of various pro and semi-pro basketball players in the Spanish leagues. It is important to note that the composition of the teams are not the same from game to game making it hard to assess the level of competition each game and comparing results to other teams that might have played the same teams.

Despite the exhibition nature of the games we learned quite a bit about the players - more so even than what we could glean during Moneyball this summer.

November 14, 2023: Michigan State faced off against the Duke Blue Devils in the Champions Classic tonight and lost 74-65. Neither team looked like it was playing crisply and struggled in the first ten minutes of the game to score. Duke largely couldn't get a shot up because of turnovers caused by MSU and Michigan State couldn't make open jumpers.

By the end of the first half, Duke started to pull away by hitting a few shots and getting Malik Hall in foul trouble since he was doing the majority of the damage for the Spartans. In the second half, MSU finally started to find the bottom of the net as they hit 4-6 three pointers and shot nearly 60% from the field. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough as Duke hit just enough 3s and free throws to stay one to three possessions up on MSU. Clearly, despite the loss, the Spartans showed glimmers of the team we think they can be this year.

November 11, 2023: Michigan State has competed in the early season Champions Classic with Kansas, Kentucky, and Duke for so long it almost feels as if it has been going forever. The round robin matchup has been around since 2011 and will once again be a great measuring stick for these Spartans. 

This year, MSU gets a talented Duke team who is coming off a 5 point loss to Arizona at home. Similar to last year where the Spartans faced national player of the year candidate, Oscar Tshiebwe, they get to face another in Kyle Filipowski. Filipowski is a 6'11" sophomore hitting over 50% from 3 and figures to be a huge challenge for MSU's defense.

In an early matchup with plenty of story lines, one big one for MSU is their futility behind the arc. Their 2-31 shooting has been epically bad and needs to improve if they have any hope of competing with the Blue Devils. Also, Michigan State needs to avoid another slow and lackluster start or they may find no way to climb out the hole to compete.

November 9, 2023: Michigan State exorcised a few demons Thursday night by beating Southern Indiana 74-51. The Spartans outscored the Screaming Eagles 37-14 in the first half with some suffocating defense. Unfortunately, the defense largely disappeared in the second half.

MSU continues to get very spotty performance from its senior point guard, AJ Hoggard, which has led to erratic play and a general lack of smoothness on both sides of the floor. With Duke coming up in a few days, MSU will need its veterans to play their best to keep that game competitive.

November 8, 2023: If there was ever a time to get back on the court and cleanse your mouth it's the Spartans. After an historically poor shooting performance in the home opener against James Madison, MSU looks to get back on track before the Champions Classic next week.

Although the USI Screaming Eagles should be easier competition for the Spartans, this game could be a check for how the upperclassman plan on playing this year. The team has now had back to back games with a lack of focus and intensity costing them two wins (of course, the first was and exhibition against Tennessee and didn't count.) Can Izzo get this team turned around before they head into the meat of the nonconference schedule?

November 7, 2023: In what has to be one of the most inexplicable opening nights in MSU basketball history, #4 MSU lost 79-76 to James Madison. They did this behind 1-20 3 point shooting, 23-37 FT shooting, and getting outrebounded by a very talented mid major program.

The game highlighted the Spartans' recent lack of focus and intensity at the starts of game. Their lackadaisical effort was on full display as James Madison came out quick and physical and never let Michigan State get comfortable. All MSU can do now is hope to learn from their poor effort and correct those mistakes as they head further into the season.

November 3, 2023: A lot like Christmas morning, Monday is the official start to the college basketball season in what we hope will be a very special and fun year for MSU hoops. The Dukes from James Madison, however, won't be a pushover. They won their conference last year (but lost in the conference tourney) and are favored to again this year. JMU ranks in the top 150 on KenPom which puts them above Minnesota.

Featured player, Terrence Edwards will be the player to watch for on James Madison. Edwards is a projected first team conference player and at 6'7" he could give MSU some fits playing at the wing with that size and skill. This should be a great test and warmup for the Spartans as they prepare for their matchup a week later against Duke in the Champions Classic.

October 29, 2023: Well, if you attended the game or watched it on TV, you would be excused for not realizing that the 89-88 last second loss to Tennessee at the Breslin wasn't a regular season game. Aside from the first 6 minutes of the game where the Vols leapt out to a 17-1 lead, the game felt every bit like the even and hard nosed game we anticipated.

Although, there was no disqualification from 5 fouls, the game otherwise felt like any other game except that it was two extremely physical and skilled teams. The Spartans never led the game but pushed Tennessee throughout and tied it with under 5 seconds on a 3 from AJ Hoggard. Unfortunately, a foul was soon called on Tre Holloman leading to the Vols splitting a pair of free throws to win the game by one.
