I’m Dr Milli Raizada, a UK-based family physician/GP. 

I’ve over 15 years experience practicing medicine here in the UK. In this podcast series, I’m going to take that experience and bring expert speakers to you and use this pod as a tool to educate and empower people to make better lifestyle choices, looking at the evidence base on how we can prevent, treat and reverse lifestyle-related chronic conditions and hormonal issues. Today I am joined on the podcast by Dr Debie Rice. Debbie  is the Director of Clinical Education at Precision Analytical Laboratory. She gr aduated from NCNM (NUNM) after falling in love with Naturopathic Medicine and pursuing her passion for access and advocacy for health care. She was introduced to Naturopathic Medicine through her own health struggles and after much investigative work, she became a fan of lifestyle evaluation and treatment. 
 
She has worked with communities in need, supporting Natural Doctors International in Nicaragua, as well as the Peace Corps prior to medical school. Given her experience, she also obtained an MPH from Grand Canyon University for a broader understanding of the global health impact. She has worked in many diverse environments including private practice. She is a trained midwife and loves working with hormones and hormone balance. When not digging into the literature with her team at DUTCH, she can be found either in the sun or the river, snuggling her animals, or lying in a blissed out shivasanah after a great yoga practice.

In this episode I introduce myself and goals and aims of the podcast show; Boost & Biohack your health. 

 

I am a UK based medical doctor working as a GP and lifestyle medicine physician. senior Clinical Lecturer in Primary care academia. I’ve over 15 years experience practicing medicine here in the UK and in this time I have realised the importance of self care and self management in our lifestyles to boost and biohack our health.  Biohacking describes how we can change our mind, body and health through tools such as heat and cold therapy, fasting and meditation this pod show aims to bring you practical and DIY tools to boost your health and the name of the podcast show was born. 

I’m going to take my experience and use it to educate and empower people to make better lifestyle choices, looking at the evidence base on how we can prevent, treat and reverse lifestyle-related chronic conditions utilising the pillars of lifestyle medicine; nutrition, exercise, sleep, avoidance of toxic substances, emotional wellbeing and positive psychology. 

 

I will be having powerful and thought provoking conversations with leading experts in the health circle and other health care professionals on hot topics surrounding health and wellness. I have a special interest in hormonal health and how to eat, fast and train with our menstrual cycle.. Some speakers include Dr Deepak Ravindran, leading author and Pain Consultant on topics related to chronic pain and Dr Emma Short, a consultant doctor with a doctorate in cancer genetics who works in the NHS doctor specialising in gastrointestinal and soft tissue pathology.

Episode 002: Painful sex? Ins and Outs of Vulvodynia

On this podcast, we are joined by Dr Deepak Ravindran and discuss the topic vulvodynia. Deepak has over 20 years of experience in helping people overcome their pain - in the NHS and in private practice. He is one of the few consultants in the UK who possesses dual certification in this area. He has been a consultant in pain medicine for the last 10 years, at the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust in the UK. He is currently clinical lead for the specialist pain services for all of West Berkshire since 2015. 

 He has written an excellent though provoking book called The Pain-Free Mindset: 7 Steps to Taking Control and Overcoming Chronic Pain. The topic we will be discussing today is vulvodynia. This is such an important but not a widely understood or discussed area in medicine which thousands of women suffering intolerably. It’s a chronic pain condition which can be due to many causes which we will further discuss today; inflammation (from infections such as thrush or allergies which may then lead to nerve proliferation and further pain, hormonal imbalance and changes, dermatology and skin issues such as lichen sclerosis, pelvic floor muscle dysfunction and damage of the nerve supplying the area – the pudendal nerve. The treatment is dependent on the cause and lifestyle measures can be used effectively to help improve pain and reverse some of the hormonal causes. The term neuroplasticity is also discussed which describes how the brain is fluid and how its nerve networks are constantly rewiring and changing and we can use this to try to retrain the brain in how it perceives chronic pain. Today, Deepak and I take a deep dive into this area in more depth.

In today’s podcasts we talk about the gut microbiome and I am joined by Dr Emma Short. Dr Short is a Consultant doctor in the NHS doctor specialising in gastrointestinal and soft tissue pathology. She also has a PhD in cancer genetics. 
  
As a pathologist, Emma spends many of her working hours diagnosing chronic diseases such as cancer. Many of these diseases are preventable. Every day, she sees the effects that people's lifestyles have on their health and wellbeing. As a result, Emma has become passionate about health promotion and disease prevention using evidence-based lifestyle interventions. 
 
 Emma is a qualified fitness instructor, personal trainer and run leader. She has a keen interest in the interaction between the mind and the body, and the impact that mental wellbeing and social connections have on health. Emma is a qualified meditation teacher and is a great advocate of showing kindness in all spheres of life. She loves exploring different aspects of holistic wellbeing and has diplomas in Mindful Nutrition and Shrinrin Yoku. She has written or edited three books about health and wellbeing.

In today’s podcast show I was joined by the esteemed Stacy Sims.  

STACY T. SIMS, MSC, PHD, is a forward-thinking international exercise physiologist and nutrition scientist who aims to revolutionize exercise nutrition and performance for women. 

She has directed research programs at Stanford, AUT University, and the University of Waikato, focusing on female athlete health and performance and pushing the dogma to improve research on all women. 

With the unique opportunities, Silicon Valley has to offer, during her tenure at Stanford, she had the opportunity to translate earlier research into consumer products and a science-based layperson's book (ROAR) written to explain sex differences in training and nutrition across the lifespan. Both the consumer products and the book challenged the existing dogma for women in exercise, nutrition, and health. This paradigm shift is the focus of her famous "Women Are Not Small Men” TEDx talk

Her contributions to the international research environment and the sports nutrition industry has established a new niche in sports nutrition; and established her reputation as the expert in sex differences in training, nutrition, and health. As a direct result, she has been named: 

  • One of the top 50 visionaries of the running industry (2015) by DMSE Sports
  • One of the top 40 women changing the paradigm of her field (2017) by Outside Magazine.  
  • One of the top four visionaries in the outdoor sports industry (2017) by Outside Magazine - Genius Issue (no electronic version but here is the proof). 
  • One of the top four individuals changing the landscape in triathlon nutrition (2017) by Triathlete Magazine 

Dr. Sims has published over 70 peer-reviewed papers, several books and is a regularly featured speaker at professional and academic conferences, including those by USOC and USA Cycling.
