Fighting Stage 4 Bowel Cancer - How Runner Jackie Robertson was Diagnosed with No Symptoms

mercredi 28 août 2024Durée 01:08:42

The Jackie Robertson Podcast:

Towards the end of 2023, just a couple of weeks after running a half marathon, the very fit and healthy Waikato mum went in for a routine blood test that changed her life.

Jackie was diagnosed with stage four colorectal cancer that had also metastasized into her liver.

For Jackie, who had zero symptoms, this news was extra tough because she is also the mother of a non-verbal son on the autism spectrum.

This is Jackie Robertson's story. It’s not pretty…but it is powerful and inspiring.

Thanks so much to the incredible team at ANZ for supporting this episode. ANZ has been proud partners of the cancer society for 34 years now.

PLEASE donate to Daffodil Day if you can, your generosity will support the cancer society to help the 1 in 3 Kiwis affected by cancer.

Michaela Blyde on Winning Gold in Paris, Meeting her Idol, Overcoming Bullying & Body Image Issues

dimanche 25 août 2024Durée 01:58:17

Michaela Blyde has just recently returned from the Olympics in Paris where she won her second gold medal, playing Rugby Sevens for the Black Ferns

I think this will go down as one of my favorite episodes of all time- just because of her attitude, energy, enthusiasm and authenticity. And just because she’s bloody hilarious and fun to be around.

We talk a lot about her recent Olympic experience, including being drug tested immediately after winning gold and going viral after meeting her sporting idol, the legendary Jamaican sprinter Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce (it's a great story- doesn’t get more Kiwi than this)

We also talk about her upcoming wedding to another Gold medalist, her children’s book, body image, the challenges and rewards of elite training, goal setting, manifestation, journaling and so much more.

Michaela is the real deal- a role model on and off the field. This episode is jam packed with cool lessons and stories.

Dame Lisa Carrington - Will the Paris 2024 Olympics Be Her Last? Managing Self Doubt & More!

mercredi 24 juillet 2024Durée 01:22:24

Dame Lisa Carrington is the Greatest NZ Olympian of all time- 5 gold medals and 1 bronze medal over the past 3 Olympic Games. And maybe she will add to that at the Paris Olympic Games.

This podcast is a re-release. It first came out at the start of 2023. I decided to rerelease it in time for the Paris Olympics because it was such a cool conversation.

Also, the podcast has grown so much since it came out I thought there would be a lot of new listeners who are unaware Lisa has even been a guest.

This is such a cool conversation. We see Lisa on TV, usually smiling on the podium with a gold medal around her neck followed by a 30-second sound bite on the news. But I have never heard Lisa be this candid before. Ever. This is a true look into the mind of a world-class athlete. You’ll get to know her strengths, weaknesses, flaws, fears, insecurities, and everything in between.

There are so many cool lessons and insights in this conversation:

The challenges female athletes face, such as maintaining balance between a demanding sports career and personal life ambitions.

Lisa opens up about the rigorous discipline required in her everyday life to be so good for so long.

We explore her early beginnings in Surf Life Saving, the crucial role played by her mentor Ian Ferguson, and the sacrifices required to train at an Olympic level from a young age.

Her reflections on body image and the scrutiny of being visibly muscular.

Then we chat about the Paris Olympics- will these Games be the last time we see Lisa Carrington compete at this level?

This episode is packed with valuable lessons for anyone- whether you want some tips to make your own life better or just learn more about a Kiwi icon.

Jono Ridler (NZ record holder for longest open water swim)

mercredi 10 mai 2023Durée 01:01:11

Just 4 days before recording this podcast, Jono Ridler had SMASHED the New Zealand open water swim distance record when he swam 99 kilometers (previous record was 80km)

His 33 hour non-stop swim without a wetsuit started on a fine Tuesday morning and finished on a very story Wednesday night.

I really hope you guys like this chat. Jono is not a big name guest…he’s just a regular guy who has done something incredible and inspiring. Actually, to give you an idea of just how regular he is, after finishing this 99km swim on Wednesday night he spent Thursday in Hospital then was back at work on Friday! .

I absolutely love that- ordinary people doing extraordinary things

There are lots of lessons in here about staying positive and not giving up when things get hard. Even some techniques that any of us can use to achieve greatness in our own lives, whatever your goal is.

Campbell Johnstone: First openly gay All Black.

dimanche 7 mai 2023Durée 01:13:41

Campbell Johnstone made a name for himself in NZ rugby circles as an All Black and Canterbury Crusaders rugby star in the early 2000's,

He made a name for himself internationally in early 2023 when he became the first ever openly gay all black. This is his story.

This is as they say in rugby, a podcast of two halves- the first half zooms in on his sexuality and the second half looks back on his rugby career which included three super rugby titles.

We chat about his decision to do the interview on Seven Sharp with Hilary Barry, growing up gay and his earliest sexual experiences, coming out to his parents, dabbling with the Grindr dating app and much more.

Then we look back on his rugby career- his thoughts on Razor Robertson as a coach, the hilarious reaction from his dad when he told him he was an All Black, his awkward haka experiences and more.

I really enjoyed Campbells company and I hope you guys love this conversation and get something from it.

Thanks very much to the absolute legends at Radix Nutrition for sponsoring this episode. I start every day with their protein powder mixed with ice cubes and a bit of trim milk. If you are not using protein powder- you should give it a go. Its not just for weightlifters…its useful for anyone who wants to hang on to the muscles you already have (which is so important, especially as you get older).

Billy Evans (Boston police commissioner)

dimanche 30 avril 2023Durée 01:04:16

William "Billy" Evans.

It was an absolute honor and a privilege to spend an hour with Billy Evans in Boston, just 2 days after the 2023 Boston marathon (which he ran with his two sons).

Ten years ago, Billy ran the Boston marathon, then shortly after finishing, he and his entire Boston police force had to get to work to try and find out who was responsible for the two bombs that went off near the finish line of the marathon.

If you have seen the Netflix documentary series, “American Manhunt: The Boston marathon bombing” you will be familiar with Billy.  He is the first face you see in episode one. He is also the person responsible for capturing one of the two bombers alive after he called for a ceasefire after an intense shoot-out on a boat.

Billy has lived in Boston his whole life and spent his entire adult life in law enforcement.

He is a passionate runner, husband, dad, and Bostonian. And I could not believe my luck when he kindly agreed to sit down with me while I was in his city.

In our hour we talk about his relationship with running, his upbringing and losing both his parents at a young age, his decades as a cop in Boston then the Boston bombing, a case that defined his career.

Thanks very much to my mates at Radix Nutrition for sponsoring this episode. These guys are doing incredible work with their small team from their big factory in Waikato. And it’s an honor to have a front row seat as they take on the world: They do a whole range of exceptional products- I start the day with a protein shake using their powder (usually banana or coconut).

Suzy Cato

Saison 1 · Épisode 69

dimanche 23 avril 2023Durée 01:19:20

SUZY CATO.

I think for the most part Suzy is a New Zealander who needs no introduction. Chances are if you are in your 20s or 30s now, she was a big part of your childhood (she is the undisputed queen of children’s TV in Aotearoa).

In this episode, I had the pleasure of diving deep into her life and career. We explored her beginnings in radio, her transition to TV, and how she met her husband, Steve.

We also discussed Susie's experiences dealing with the heartbreak of losing a baby and being let go from TV3, as well as how she bounced back from those terrible experiences.

We talked about Susie's relationship with exercise and her childhood growing up in Kaikohe.

We touched on Suzy’s personal experiences with prioritizing mental health, coping with grief and navigating career changes.

We also discussed her stints on reality TV with Dancing with the Stars and The Masked Singer.

She is such fun company and I really hope you guys enjoy it as much as I did.

Thanks to the legends at Radix Nutrition for sponsoring this episode. These guys are doing BIG things from their factory in the Waikato and I feel genuinely fortunate to be associated with them- great people doing great things:

Saison 1 · Épisode 68

dimanche 16 avril 2023Durée 01:09:59

Mike Rudling is the founder and CEO of Radix Nutrition (who are the sponsors of this podcast).

The team at Radix Nutrition asked if I would consider having Mike on as a guest and I didn’t hesitate to say yes.

We discuss the origins of this company which he started in the Bay of Islands 10 years ago when he was 23.

We dive into Mike's childhood in England and his experiences with dyslexia and boarding school.

We also explore his transition from competitive swimming to cyclist and the mental health challenges Mike faced after being forced to give up on his dream of professional sports.

This is an episode full of insightful conversations and personal reflections with one of the most intensely focused guests I’ve ever had.

Bite size Mitch James on the realities of being opening act for Calum Scott

jeudi 13 avril 2023Durée 08:07

This "Bite size" episode comes from my full conversation with Mitch James.

The purpose of these is that you may give it a listen, decide you want to hear more, then go back and check out the full episode. I'd be curious to know if this ever works or not LOL. It just seemed like a smart idea in my head.

This episode with Mitch was incredibly special to me. Mitch was the very first guest on this podcast when it launched a year ago. Since then, a lot has changed for both of us so I wanted to get him back for a catch up episode.

Some of you may have heard that very first episode. I’m guessing most of you guys haven’t heard it. But either way,

This WAS NOT a recap episode. We cover completely new stuff. Including a track-by-track deconstruction of Mitch’s recent album, Patience.

Thanks very much to the legends at Radix Nutrition for sponsoring this episode. They make a whole range of awesome products at their state of the art factory in the Waikato I’m obsessed with their protein and have one for breakfast every morning without fail. Friends of mine who love tramping swear by their ready-to-eat meals where you just add water. Radix Nutrition are a fairly new company with ambitions to take on the world and I am genuinely proud to be on this journey with them. Please check them out online and if you like what you see, support the legends that support the podcast:
