#276 How the immune system, nutrition and mindset affect pain with Prof. Dr Deepak Ravindran
mercredi 4 décembre 2024 • Durée 01:50:18
Today we’re diving into how nutrition intersects with the complicated world of pain. Today I have former guest and colleague Prof. Dr Deepak Ravindran to talk to us about how our immune system can impact our perception of pain, the different types of pain patients and how we can do better as medical professionals in the management of chronic pain.
This topic covers IBS, pelvic pain, chronic cystitis, fibromyalgia, migraine, functional gut disorders, long covid and more. Pain cannot be explained by a singular pathway, and I think there is so much we could all learn from Deepak's insights on this topic.
We discuss the different types of pain patients, how the immune system trains our responses to pain, how trauma in childhood can impact our responses to pain and why food plays a pivotal role.
Deepak is Honorary Professor at Teesside University and has worked as an NHS Consultant in Pain management, he’s author of the “Pain Free Mindset” a fantastic book that I recommend to both patients and medical colleagues. His new role is Director of Lifestyle Medicine for a primary care network (PCN) of GP practices in Reading, UK, working upstream to bring these insights early in the chain of pain management.
We talk about the use of fasting, anti-inflammatory diets, the importance of gut supportive diets and key ingredients that could be useful for chronic pain sufferers.

#275 Improve sugar control and put type 2 diabetes into remission with diet, exercise and lifestyle medicine with Dr Rupy Aujla
mercredi 27 novembre 2024 • Durée 01:32:27
I’m often asked by colleagues and patients for a full breakdown of what I say in clinic with patients with type 2 diabetes or who are at higher risk of this condition to help them better manage it before medications. But it takes time. And no GP in the NHS or elsewhere has over an hour to explain this in enough detail such that people can understand how to take action themselves.
The recommendations for medical professionals is for them to explore diet and lifestyle options before turning to pharmaceuticals for the management of type 2 diabetes. But with less than 10 minutes per appointment, this is an impossible task.
This is the basis of today's podcast. If I had an hour with you, or your loved one, this is how I would explain what type 2 diabetes is, why sugar control is so important and what things you can do to prevent or better manage the condition and even potentially put it into remission.
I would love to know your comments and feedback on today's episode, so if you have any suggestions, please leave a comment on YouTube and do share this with anyone who you feel could benefit from the information.

#267 Think clearer and stay sharp with these brain health strategies from Neurophysiologist Dr Louisa Nicola
mercredi 2 octobre 2024 • Durée 01:49:49
According to Alzheimer's research UK, over 50% of everyone listening to this podcast will be affected by dementia by either contracting the disease ourselves, caring for somebody with the disease or both.
Dementia is due to impact 130 million people globally by 2050, and today it is the biggest killer in the UK. But we have no effective treatments, it’s diagnosed late in the disease process and prevention is hardly mentioned.
Today I’m joined by Dr Louisa Nicola who has been studying this disease throughout her career and is currently completing her Doctorate with the University of Washington focused on Alzheimer's. She also runs a human performance clinic, Neuro Athletics, where the goal is to prevent and delay dementia as well as advise on what activities we can do today to keep our brains sharp.
We’ll talk through brain boosting exercises and the reasons why certain exercises are good, plus the nutrients we need to feed ourselves to support our neurological needs.
You’ll get an idea of the routines, habits and practices that are not only necessary for elite athletes to optimise performance, but also for us if we want to do our best to avoid dementia.
I’ll also get Dr Louisa’s thoughts on protein, as well as omega 3, electrolytes and creatine supplements.

#215 Supplements that are not worth it with Dr Rupy
mercredi 27 septembre 2023 • Durée 29:25
Today I’m talking about the supplements that I think are not as useful as the claims make out, as well as the ones that I think may have use.
Supplements are a tricky subject but I think it warrants a bit more attention on the podcast considering I get asked about them so much and I’m a user of supplements myself!
In summary those that I think are not worth it or require caution include:
Multivitamins
Calcium
Vitamin D3 (alone)
Zinc
Those that could be more worth it include:
High quality and high dose Omega 3
Food based supplements e.g. cacao, dehydrated berries, hemp seeds, flaxseed
Turmeric
Creatine
Vitamin D3 + K2

#214 Should you eat tomatoes? With Dr Rupy
mercredi 20 septembre 2023 • Durée 45:57
Today we’re diving into the world of tomatoes, one of the most consumed ‘fruits’ globally with a rich heritage and mixed opinions on whether it’s healthful or harmful?
I’m always asked whether patients should be eating nightshade family ingredients, whether it can excerbate athritis symptoms, cause stomach acid and even IBS.
So today we’re going into the benefits of tomatoes, the compounds we find in them and how to get the most out of this nutrient rich ingredient with food pairings, processes and more!
If you love this kind of deep dive you’ll love the Seasonal Sunday’s newsletter that the team and I put together each week that dives into a seasonal ingredient, it’s history, nutritional medicine benefits and how to use it in the kitchen.

BONUS Food for Mood with Dr Michael Dixon & Dr Uma Naidoo
lundi 18 septembre 2023 • Durée 44:10
Should we be reaching for the dinner plate before the pill bottle when treating mental illness? Well my next guests certainly think so. Dr Michael Dixon and Uma Naidoo are back on the podcast talking about the Food for Mood campaign, an idea that literally started around the King’s dining table last year!
This idea of food as medicine is truly taking shape in the UK, but without strategies to ensure people can actually attain a level of nutrition to unlock these potential benefits, we’re simply reverberating ideas in an ineffective echo chamber. Michael and Uma are taking up the challenge, and launching the ‘Food for Mood’ campaign that engages multiple stake holders including government, supermarkets and of course, medical professionals and promotes the idea and practical strategies to introduce nutritional psychiatry at scale.
Dr. Uma Naidoo is a Harvard trained psychiatrist, professional chef and a trained Nutrition Specialist and her nexus of interests have found their niche in Nutritional Psychiatry. She is also the national bestselling author of This Is Your Brain On Food.
Dr Michael Dixon is chairman of the college of medicine, he’s been a general practitioner at College Surgery in Devon for over 35 years. Since the early 1990s, he has been a leader of the GP/clinical commissioning movement with its aim of allowing frontline clinicians a far greater role in improving local services and health. Since 2007, he has been visiting professor to the University of Westminster (Integrated School of Health) and was also appointed visiting professor of University College, London in 2012.

#212 Why Tempeh is your new favourite ingredient with Dr. Driando Ahnan-Winarno
mercredi 6 septembre 2023 • Durée 55:27
I learnt so much on todays podcast about one of my favourite ingredients, Tempeh. I know you probably have preconceptions about it, but trust me, when you begin to understand the history and variety of tempeh you will soon recognise that it’s comparable to that of cheese, wine and other artisanal foods we cherish.
Joining me to dive into the world of this beautiful health promoting ingredient is Dr. Driando Ahnan-Winarno, an absolute Tempeh specialist and probably the worlds best expert on this ingredient!
Ando, as he’s also known by, is a food scientist, activist, entrepreneur, who’s mission is to give more people access to nutritious, sustainable, and affordable sources of protein through promoting and innovating on tempeh. And he is the man to do that considering his PhD was on the tempeh fermentation process and written 5 texts on tempeh fermentation, including the most updated manuscript on tempeh i.e. a semicentennial review paper on tempeh so-called “The Tempeh Bible”. You can find that on www.thedoctorskitchen.com website.
Ando also co-founded Better Nature Ltd (in 2019), a UK-based plant-based food start-up, whose Tempeh you’ll find in Tesco and all large supermarkets and tastes delicious.

#211 Psychedelics and the new era of Psychiatry with Professor David Nutt
mercredi 30 août 2023 • Durée 01:09:01
Today I’m thrilled to have Professor David Nutt on the podcast, an expert on drugs, and how they work on the brain. He trained as a psychiatrist, and for almost 50 years his research has focused on new drug treatments for anxiety, depression and addiction.
Today we’re going to be diving into the world of psychedelics such as LSD, Psilocybin and Ketamine. We discuss the history of psychedelics and why they were banned in the first place, despite having a relatively good safety profile, how these drugs work and the mechanism on the brain, the default mode network (DMN) and the latest research looking at its efficacy and role in a multitude of conditions.
You can check out his latest book “Psychedelics” and try his revolutionary alternative to alcohol that we mention on the podcast, sentia spirits, online.
I’m really excited for you to hear this podcast, it’s rare that he has the time to dedicate a whole hour in his packed schedule, so please enjoy my conversation with Professor Nutt.
