We continue with the second set from the Uptown Theatre in Chicago on November 18, 1978.
This one starts with a fine Scarlet>Fire, perhaps a bit shorter than some, but with some nice Garcia intensity leading into Fire. Miracle follows leading into an excellent 'He's Gone' - there's an interesting jam here unlike most you'll hear in this song. The recording really brings this one home. Instead of going right into Drums, we get Bobby and Phil leading the band into a fine 'Other One'. Once they do go into Drums, they go into a unique Ollin Arageed space.. 'Wharf Rat' then 'Sugar Magnolia ' end the set, but surprise, they do a 'One More Saturday Night' encore...

This week's Deadpod takes us to Chicago - to the Uptown Theater home of many fine Grateful Dead shows. This one is from Saturday, November 18, 1978.
Our tape starts, unfortunately, with an abbreviated 'Jack Straw', but what we have shows us the energy the band came on stage with on this evening. A soulful 'Candyman' follows, then the 'Me & My Uncle>Big River' combo - marked by an exceptional Big River marked by some very nice solos by Garcia. He's just warming up however, as he follows with a great 'Sugaree' The rest of the set is equally well played, but I want to point out the beautiful 'From the Heart of Me' that Donna Jean Godchaux performs. She sings this one beautifully, and I wanted to bring us a reminder of just how great she was. I'm very saddened by her passing as I'm sure you are as well..

This week on the Deadpod we have the second set from the band's performance at the beautiful Greek Theater in Berkeley California on August 18, 1989.
This is pretty classic Dead for this high water period of the band, with a groovin' 'Iko Iko' to open things up, followed by the mellow 'Looks Like Rain'. Jerry brings out a classic 'Terrapin Station' leading into a fine Drums and Space. I love the 'Crazy Fingers' out of space, and the 'Stella Blue' in the ballad slot hits just right.
Following the rockin' 'Lovelight' we are treated to a double encore - with 'And We Bid You Goodnight' following a nice 'Black Muddy River'.

This week the Deadpod travels to the East Coast for a show that took place around 2 months after last week's show.
This is the early show from the Fillmore East in NYC on January 2, 1970. This is quite a nice tape, don't let the few seconds at the beginning fool you.
The 'Mason's Children' opener is a good representation of this somewhat odd song. 'Black Peter' is quite extended, much more than usual for this song. 'Hard to Handle' is explosive as usual. The boys really hit their stride here with the 'Cryptical Envelopment>Drums>Other One'. I quite enjoy the 'Cosmic Charlie' that follows but that's a tune I thought they never played often enough :)
I hope you enjoy it..

This week's Deadpod contains part two of the band's performance at the Fillmore in San Francisco on November 7, 1969.
Hyper-energetic, this one contains loads of frantic jamming and amazing soaring guitar work by Garcia and Lesh. After a fairly short China>Rider, they go into a deep exploration with 'Dark Star' which goes into an unusual 'Uncle John's Jam', then back out with Lesh leading the charge into 'The Other One'. The highlight, for me, is the wonderful closing number, Pigpen in all his glory on a great 'Lovelight' rap.

For this week's Deadpod we go back to 1969 for a show at the Fillmore in San Francisco that took place on November 7, 1969.
I'm going to play this music in two parts, although it is unclear whether there were really one set or two.. part one opens with a powerful 'Morning Dew' - Jerry really brings it at the end of this one!
Pigpen follows with a classic 'Hard To Handle' - so great to listen to the Pig bring it on this one! 'Casey Jones' follows then a couple of Bobby's ditty's 'Mama Tried' and 'Me & My Uncle' - they all sound great on this early soundboard! There follows some general hilarity with someone in the audience playing the 'Star Spangled Banner' on a flute and several short tunings.. following a nice 'Cold Rain and Snow' we are treated to dual harmonies from Garcia and Pigpen on 'Next Time You See Me'. They slow it down a bit on a soulful 'High Time' before we close this first part with some classic Pigpen on 'Good Lovin'.

This week's Deadpod features the second set from the Fabulous Fox Theater in Atlanta Georgia on October 29, 1985.
They come out strong with a fine version of 'Mississippi Half-Step' into 'Franklin's Tower' - lots of energy and interplay here, and the first Franklin's not out of Slipknot since '83. . This then goes into a very good 'Sailor>Saint' .. one of the last five times they would ever play this combo, ever. A lovely 'Crazy Fingers' follows, although Jer gets lost in the lyrics, its a lovely transition into Drums..
'The Wheel' comes out of Space in a swirl of sound, and Phil is bombing on 'The Other One' that follows.. after 'Wharf Rat' they close the set with 'Johnny B. Goode' which hadn't had this slot since December 81..

This week's Deadpod takes us to the Fabulous Fox theater in Atlana Georgia for the boy's performance on October 29, 1985.
We have an energetic first set, out of the gate with a fine 'Feel Like a Stranger', the 'Friend of the Devil' that follows is very good, Jerry is in excellent voice for this period, much better than many nights during '85. I love how Brent sounds here, personally. I quite enjoyed all of these renditions, and while this is a short first set (some say caused by technical difficulties) it is still a nice set to enjoy on a crisp Autumn afternoon.. I hope you enjoy it.

It's Friday the 13th, but I hope you'll feel lucky to listen to this fine second set from October 18, 1978.
The second night of the 'From Egypt with Love' run at Winterland, this set features some very strong Drums and Space, highlighted by a guest appearance from Lee Oskar, giving it a decided Egyptian feel. While Jerry flubs the lyrics to 'Terrapin Station' a fine 'Samson and Delilah' more than makes up for it. The show also has a rare set-ending 'Truckin' which is first rate.
I hope you enjoy it..

This week on the Deadpod I've decided to feature the second night from the historic 'From Egypt With Love' run at the Winterland in October of 1978.
While the opening 'Sugaree' is patched for about the first minute, don't let that dissuade you this one- the sound is crystal clear throughout afterwards, and the band is listening to each other and the result is a dynamic, lovely evening of music.
Donna Jean in particular provides some lovely backing vocals on "Looks Like Rain' and 'Music Never Stopped'. Jerry is on point here with several delicious solos as well.
