Jo Koy used to stand in the shower and pretend he was winning the Apollo. Full self-introduction, no jokes written. Just the intro.
His first real set: 18 years old, lied and said he was 21, drew a mustache on with his mom's eyeliner, wore a borrowed suit into a bar on Eastern and Tropicana.
He did nothing but sex jokes. Dead room. Then cottonmouth hit and he kept going anyway.
A woman at the back yelled “put a condom on it.” She got the standing ovation. He got to wipe the mustache off in the parking lot.
The Lionel Richie impersonator who crushed right before him found him after and said, “I don't know what you got, but you got something on stage.”
Koy went home, walked past his mom without a word, laid in bed and remembered a comic saying he bombed 18 times before his first laugh. His thought: okay, I got 17 more.
He won the Apollo for real. The shower bit came true.
His dad's line, the one he still lives by: don't ever say what if. Just do it.
