In this episode I chat with New Zealand artist Viv Wotton about her journey and motivations for attending art school. We discuss the challenges and rewards of attending art school, the importance of receiving constructive feedback and developing critical thinking. Viv discusses how art school provided her with confidence and context in the art world, and we chat about some of the aspects that she still felt lacking in when she left. I really enjoyed chatting to Viv about the  role of social media and alternative avenues in understanding how to navigate an art career outside of traditional gallery representation.  We also chat about the connections made with peers, tutors, and industry professionals as well as the challenges of balancing family life with her studies.

This episode I discuss the challenges and upsides of making art your full time career with Australian landscape Artist Johnny K. We delved into the realities of transitioning from a secure corporate job to becoming a full-time artist. Johnny shared his journey discussing aspects like goal setting and financial planning and the role they played in the move, as well as the importance of being able to talk things through with friends, peers and gallery advisors. I really appreciated Johnny talking about the struggles he faced early on in his career and the way he is able to see these as beneficial, contributing to his growth and the appreciation for his success.

This episode I’m talking with Jen Sievers about prints. I thought Jen would be an absolute font of knowledge on this topic because she is a NZ based artist who has recently launched a course on prints, and she has also successfully been selling her own for years in Aus and NZ. We chat about some of the challenges and benefits as well as some of the practical aspects like scanning and choosing reliable printing partners. We discuss the (maybe outdated) notion that prints will devalue originals and Jen counters with some great points about how having prints can help an artist remain accessible to a wider audience while help to build demand and visibility.
