Christy-Faith interviews Hannah Maruyama of Degree Free, who helps young adults find career roadmaps without needing college degrees. They discuss the flaws of the academic industrial complex and the misconception that college degrees are necessary for success. They also touch on the pressure homeschooling parents face to prepare their children for college and the importance of considering alternative paths. Hannah shares her own homeschooling experience and emphasizes the need to challenge societal norms and make strategic choices for our children's futures.

Ep. 20 - Debunking Myths and Misconceptions About Speech Therapy (Part 2 of 2) // Amanda Owens13 Jun 202400:41:45

We continue the conversation in Part 2 about empowering parents in the speech therapy process. Homeschooling can be the best option for speech and language development, as it allows for more individualized attention and conversation with adults. However, the current system of speech therapy in schools is often ineffective due to large caseloads and limited time with each child. Homeschooling parents who need speech therapy for their children can explore alternative options such as finding a smaller clinic or one-on-one therapist, looking for government assistance or scholarship programs, or considering online therapy. It is important for speech language pathologists to empower parents and involve them in the therapy process, as they play a crucial role in their child's progress. Additionally, there is a need for more training and awareness about the impact of tongue ties and orofacial myofunctional disorders on speech development. The traditional model of speech therapy may need to be reevaluated and adapted to better serve the needs of homeschooling families.

Takeaways:

  • Homeschooling can provide a conducive environment for speech and language development.
  • The current system of speech therapy in schools is often ineffective due to large caseloads and limited time with each child.
  • Homeschooling parents can explore alternative options for speech therapy, such as smaller clinics, one-on-one therapists, government assistance, scholarship programs, and online therapy.

Christy-Faith and Lisa discuss the rapid changes in technology and the job market, emphasizing the need for adaptable skills and critical thinking. -SHOW NOTES-

00:00 Dr. Brian Ray discusses the importance and effectiveness of homeschooling based on extensive research and personal experience.

04:57 Despite common criticisms, research shows homeschooling is beneficial for children's social and emotional well-being. Dr. Brian Ray argues against government regulation, citing lack of evidence for harm.

08:07 Public schools have high regulations but low proficiency in reading and math, homeschooling parents are dedicated and misconceptions about homeschooling exist, and concerns about abuse and neglect in homeschooling are addressed.

12:25 Homeschooling teaches critical thinking and values, and accusations of indoctrination with right-wing or Nazi beliefs are unfair; higher regulations may not prevent abuse in homeschooling.

16:50 Police should not profile based on appearance, extended school breaks can lead to harmful behavior, traditional schools are not inherently safer, and government controls are not effectively preventing sexual maltreatment of public school students.

22:08 Homeschooling in the US has little regulation, leading to potential dangers for children, but it also has a lower rate of child abuse fatalities compared to institutional schooling.

28:28 Homeschooling provides more attention, protection from bullying, and better academic education, as public schools overlook trauma and government control over homeschooling is unconstitutional.

33:02 Laws based on emotions may not protect children and can erode freedoms, while societal issues like music degradation require a change in thinking, and participation in a homeschooling study is encouraged.

Wondering how to reduce screen time for kids when you homeschool — and whether you're actually winning the battle? Christy-Faith, veteran educator and host of The Christy-Faith Show, says homeschool moms are sitting on the answer — the lifestyle they've already chosen is the strategy everyone else is desperately searching for.

  • What the research actually says about screen time recommendations by age — and why the number of hours may be the wrong thing to track

A homeschool mom gets her son tested for dyslexia — he qualifies — and they refuse to give him the diagnosis because he's homeschooled. They called it "failure to educate." Have you ever been interrogated, profiled, or made to feel like a suspect just because you homeschool?

Homeschool expert Christy-Faith — author of Homeschool Rising, with over 20 years in education — shares three powerful strategies for handling hostile service providers, explains the power differential homeschool families face at appointments, and introduces the Christy-Faith List: a free nationwide directory connecting homeschool families with businesses and providers who support them.

Ep. 104 - Homeschool Mom Burnout Recovery: Soul Care vs. Self Care // Debra Fileta12 Feb 202600:54:34

If there's one thing we know about homeschool moms, it's that we are really good at giving of ourselves. But somewhere along the way, we picked up this belief that a beautiful life is something we give, not something we get to have.

In this episode, Christy-Faith sits down with licensed professional counselor, author, and homeschool mom of four, Debra Fileta, to unpack why so many of us are running on empty and what it actually looks like to care for our souls, not just our schedules.

Ep. 99 - The $40 Billion Youth Sports Machine // Jonathan Carone08 Jan 202601:11:19

If you’ve ever watched your child lose joy in a sport they once loved, this episode will hit close to home.

Christy-Faith and guest Jonathan Carone discuss how youth sports has slowly shifted from play to pressure. What used to be backyard games and simple fun has turned into rankings, money, identity, and adult expectations kids were never meant to carry.

This episode is not about blaming parents or coaches. It's not anti-sports either (We love sports and competition!).  It is about pausing long enough to ask what our kids actually need, and what really lasts after the last game is played.

Ep. 98 - Homeschool Mom Burnout: What Your Brain Actually Needs to Recover // Dr. Joe O’Tool01 Jan 202601:11:42

72% of parents get insufficient sleep at least three nights a week. And when we finally get the kids to bed, most of us do the same thing — stay up scrolling because it's the only time that feels like ours. But what if the things we think are recharging us are actually making us more exhausted?

In this episode, Christy-Faith sits down with Dr. Joe O'Toole, a neuroscientist and homeschool success story, to unpack the difference between true rest and just escaping. If you're running on empty no matter how much "rest" you get, this conversation will challenge everything you thought you knew about recharging.

Ep. 97 - The Belief That Nearly Broke My Homeschool // Behind the Screen (Part 6/6)24 Dec 202500:34:32

In this final episode of the Behind the Screen series, Christy-Faith shares her deepest why: the real reason behind everything she does. After twenty years in education, she thought homeschooling would be easy. She had the credentials and experience. What she didn't have was support. And it nearly cost her everything.

She explores the hidden cost of going it alone and the one belief holding homeschool moms back: that investing in yourself is optional. Learn what the research says about homeschools that thrive versus those that burn out, and why supporting yourself is actually supporting your kids.

Ep. 96 - The Grief that Comes with Growth // Behind the Screen (Part 5/6)18 Dec 202500:45:10

No one warned you that growth could come with grief. That answering a calling might mean watching parts of your old life slip away—friendships that shift, privacy that disappears, and a simplicity you didn't know to treasure until it was gone.

In this raw and reflective episode, Christy-Faith opens up about the hidden cost of stepping into purpose. She shares what it's really like to carry both gratitude and grief at the same time—to love where you are while quietly aching for what you had to leave behind.

This isn't an episode about complaining when life looks good on paper. It's about finally naming the tension so many women feel but rarely say out loud: What do I do when following a calling costs me something I didn't expect to lose?

Ep. 95 - The Two Times I Almost Walked Away From My Faith // Behind the Screen (Part 4/6)10 Dec 202500:35:40

Ever lie awake at 2 AM wondering if God's even there? Or have questions you're too scared to say out loud—even to yourself?

I've been there. Twice.

In this episode, I'm sharing the two seasons I almost walked away from my faith completely. One was intellectual—I couldn't make the pieces fit anymore. The other was heartbreak so crushing I thought God was being cruel.

I'll tell you what those years actually looked like, what kept me from walking away, and why wrestling with God doesn't mean your faith is broken.

Sometimes it means it's finally getting honest.

If you're in the dark right now—or you have been—this one's for you. Stay with me.

If you’ve ever followed all the parenting rules, read all the books, and still felt your child slipping away, this episode will land deep in your chest.

In this raw and honest conversation, Christy-Faith shares the story she’s never fully told—the moment she realized the parenting method she believed was “biblical” was actually building fear, walls, and distance with her child.

What followed was a journey of unlearning, healing, and rediscovering what discipline actually means through the lens of Scripture and attachment, not shame.

Ep. 119 - Why Boredom Is the Best Thing You Can Give Your Kids This Summer28 May 202600:28:16

Before you spend another $500 on summer camp, ask one question: is boredom actually bad for your kids — or is it exactly what their growing brains need? In this episode, homeschool expert Christy-Faith makes the research-backed case that slow, unstructured, "boring" summers are one of the most powerful gifts you can give your kids. She breaks down what the science says, why their "I'm bored" makes us panic, and five simple moves for a slower, richer summer.

Ep. 89 - Why People Get Weird When You Say You Homeschool (and How to Handle It Gracefully)29 Oct 202500:29:30

You’re just trying to buy avocados, and suddenly you’re defending your entire educational philosophy.

In this hilarious and eye-opening episode, Christy-Faith breaks down why announcing “We homeschool” turns into a social experiment. From the grocery store to family gatherings, she explains the psychology behind other people’s awkward reactions and how to stay confident, calm, and kind through it all.
