Delegation is a critical leadership skill, yet it’s one that many leaders struggle to master. The truth of the matter is, there are some managers that don’t manage, and there are plenty of leaders that don’t lead. Instead, these ‘sudo’ leaders and managers try to do everything themselves by working a little longer, harder and faster than they did prior to getting their last promotion. But this approach never works because there will always be too many tasks and not enough time. In contrast, Leaders and managers who delegate have more time to focus on high-impact tasks, thereby maximizing their own effectiveness. And assigning work to staff members also increases the output and value of the entire team, as it allows concurrent activity. You're about to hear from six highly successful leaders who have all previously appeared on the show, sharing their first-hand, hard-won tips for effective delegation: You will hear from:

| Leading with Impact and Compassion: Insights from Annabel Berry | Episode 136 | 14 Sep 2023 | 00:40:08 | |
In this episode we are joined by Annabel Berry, founder of ‘The Lamplight’, a business established to enable leaders and organisations to quickly identify and change behaviours that result in better business outcomes.
Annabel has 25 years of experience founding and leading businesses in the cybersecurity industry yet remains as curious as ever to know more, be more effective, and be challenged on how best to implement new information, initiatives, and strategies. For Annabel, people are always at the heart of this.
She continues to focus her energy on encouraging more diversity and inclusivity in the cybersecurity industry through her work as chairperson of Cyber North, as a director of the non-profit Ladies Hacking Society and a Leadership Fellow at St. George’s House Windsor Castle.
When we recorded this episode, Annabel had just stepped down as Sapphire's CEO. She had held this position for eight years, which is double the average tenure of Chief Executives in the UK.
In preparing for this interview, I found a farewell post she had written on LinkedIn and was struck by the huge number of overwhelmingly positive comments it generated. They ranged from ‘natural leader’ to ‘best CEO ever’ and much more.
That being the case, in this episode, we delve into the experiences that shaped her as a leader, how she approached the job and why she decided to step down.
I also took the opportunity to ask her what advice she would give to a leader who is about to take over a team or entire business that’s in great shape and has a huge amount of admiration for the previous leader. And as regular listeners will know and expect, we also go off on several interesting and related tangents. | Building Consensus and Influencing Effectively with Daisy Cooper, MP | Episode 134 | 20 Jul 2023 | 00:39:09 | |
In today's episode, I'm joined by Daisy Cooper. Daisy was elected as MP for St Albans in 2019, unseating the previous Tory MP of nine years and becoming the first 'liberal' to hold the seat since 1904.
Having previously been the digital, culture, media and sport spokesperson and then education spokesperson for the party, she is now its health and social care spokesperson and deputy leader.
Daisy is a passionate internationalist. Before she was elected, she worked in Commonwealth affairs for ten years, campaigning for LGBT+ rights abroad and for greater transparency around how taxpayers’ money is used to help some of the world’s poorest. She continues to campaign for the preservation and promotion of Britain’s place in Europe and the world. In this episode, we avoided party politics but explored what led her to a career in politics and how she operates as a leader in this setting. We spoke about building consensus, influencing skills, and how to lead effectively when one does not have direct authority over others. And as is so often the case, we touched on the ever-relevant topics of maintaining our energy, staying resilient and priority management. Most importantly, it’s not just about sitting in silence for 10 minutes each day and trying to empty your mind.
In addition to this we talk about the importance of managing transitions as a leader; be that the small daily transition or major milestones in our work and personal lives. It’s an episode you’re going to get a huge amount of value from.
